Well here we are at the end of yet another week. The first thing to I need to do is thank Peter, Gavin, Edward, Colleen and Robyn for cooking up a storm at the Sausage Sizzle at the last Concert at the Soundshell for 2014. A very successful evening by all accounts. Listening to Johnny Cash music, coming to the rescue of the organisation who were having problems with their BBQ. Thank you for your efforts, they are very much appreciated. Thank you to Lloyd for putting his hand up to lead the team putting together the Battle of the Brains Quiz Night for this year. The team is Lloyd, Lin, Stephen, Sue (who is preparing the questions) and myself. There will be plenty of tasks for everyone, so watch this space! What we are looking for now is a Team Leader for the Streets are Paved with Gold. If you would like to lead up the team or be a part of the team call me and have a chat. This event will be held on 19 September 2014. It is now only 10 days until the Danish GSE Team members arrive in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. There will be no meeting on Monday 24 March, as we will be having a joint meeting on Tuesday 25 March.

President Esther

Have you had a look at the program that was sent out on Tuesday? I can highly recommend that you do and join in some of the activities that are taking place. The team members will enjoy

your company as much as you will enjoy theirs. Have another look and see if you can squeeze one of the activities in. Out next Information Night is coming up very quickly. If you have someone who you would like to invite on the night please pass on their details to Cherie within the next few days. She needs their name and email to send out the invitation. I had a call from Lane from Retravision on Tuesday. They are very close to having all the permits in place so they can hold Sausages Sizzles at the front of the store on Saturday mornings. This is a fun way to raise funds for the Club and have the face of Rotary out in the community. We need to decide how often we would like to be on the roster to do a Sizzle on Saturdays! It will be good practice in the lead up to the Mother’s Day Classic on 11 May. The Club has committed to do a Sausage Sizzle at the Classic from 10am until 12 noon. Another date to slip in your diary now is Sunday 6 April when we will be joined by the Boulder and Hannans Clubs to go to Karlkurla Park and assist KBULG to propagate some native plants. This is a fun morning finished off with a Sausage Sizzle (for us this time!) and some fellowship not just with our own Club members, but with members from the other two clubs in the City. Enjoy the rest of your week whilst you Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

Working together to improve literacy worldwide For most of us, reading and writing are as natural as breathing. But nearly 800 million adults worldwide lack the literacy skills needed to complete a job application, understand a child’s report card, or read a prescription. Rotary International and the International Reading Association (IRA) know that literacy is an essential ingredient for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Since 2002, RI and the IRA have combined their resources and skills to advance literacy in communities worldwide by:  Providing books and educational materials  Building and supporting schools  Mentoring students  Training teachers  Establishing literacy programs for children and adults The publication “Literacy Project Guide” is designed to help Rotary clubs and IRA reading councils to select and carry out literacy projects that meet their community’s needs. You’ll find examples of successful projects along with contact information, resources, and local and international service opportunities. Whether through volunteering your time and expertise, providing financial support, or building awareness, you can empower people and communities through literacy. ~ Rotary International and the International Reading Association Literacy Project Guide

Sharing your enthusiasm for Rotary with others is the real key to growing and strengthening Rotary membership. Rotary has been a well-kept secret for too long. It’s time for us to share the wonderful opportunities of Rotary with others. Tell a friend about your experience at this conference and about all that your club and district do throughout the year. Invite a friend to join you at a meeting or in a special event. What a wonderful way to Engage Rotary, Change Lives! The more engaged we become, the greater the rewards we enjoy. What I have learned during my Rotary journey is that as I engage Rotary, the life that has changed the most has been mine. Jetta and I ask you to join us this year in sharing the good news of Rotary and actively engaging Rotary in every way possible. Best wishes for a successful district conference.

Interplast Update Interplast celebrated 30 years of repairing bodies and rebuilding lives in 2013. It was a big year with 48 programs delivered in 16 countries. A massive effort for everyone involved and they say they couldn't have done it without people like you! Fiji 30 Year Study 2013 was an exciting year for Interplast, as many of you will know we celebrated our 30th anniversary. One of the key achievements for the year was the undertaking and completion of Interplast’s first longitudinal impact evaluation study, looking at 30 years of Interplast activities in Fiji. Inaugural Masbate Program Interplast is excited to be embarking on a new funding partnership with the Filminera Resources Corporation (Filminera), which will see three annual general plastic and reconstructive surgical programs being undertaken in partnership with the Masbate Provincial Hospital, Philippines. Interplast Supporters Race to New Heights Rotary’s Climb for a Smile event was held in October 2013. Participating teams climbed 50 floors to the finish line on the roof of the newly renovated 108 George Terrace in Perth. The Rotary Club of Kenwick organises the annual event which supports several charities (including Interplast) and has previously raised over $200,000 for Rotary causes. There was strong support on the day for Interplast with over $36,000 raised by teams including dedicated volunteers and friends.
