People wonder why you love Rotary so much and become a little obsessed with what Rotary can and does do. Here's just a small example of the power of Rotary and Rotarians. I was contacted by someone I have known for many, many years in KalgoorlieBoulder. Her brother’s step-daughter's husband is terminally ill. They live in Middle Swan so not our Rotary District. They moved into a new home in March last year and had been working on doing the yard work themselves. They have done a lot between their work commitments. However, the husband’s illness has meant he can no longer do any physical work. His wife is trying very hard to get the works completed. This is a very stressful situation. My friend asked if Rotary would be able to assist. I sent her email to DG Hank and asked if any of his clubs would be able to assist. There was a little delay as Rotarians were in Sydney for Convention. However, the current President of the Rotary Club of Midland contacted her contacts and today she has advised that the Caversham Training Centre are willing to do the job and it gives the students some additional training. I was in tears when I received the email as I know how grateful and appreciative the family are going to be. Any wonder I love Rotary so much!

President Esther

This week has been a busy one catching up with incoming Directors so the draft Club Plan for 2014-15 can be put together. It is shaping up to be an exciting year with lots of opportunities for us to enjoy Fellowship and Light up Rotary. This Saturday sees our next Retravision

Sausage Sizzle taking place. I have sent a separate email in relation to this. We all enjoyed the discussion about Kalgoorlie Rotary Food Discovery that is to take place on Friday 19 September. There is a huge amount of work to be done. Thank you to Cherie for offering to coordinate this event for us. It will mean all hands on deck to ensure this event is the huge success it is shaping up to be. KidsFest is fast approaching. We still need a member of the Club to put their hand up to coordinate the Rotary volunteers over the two days. Please give this some consideration and let me know if you are able to assist. If you can let me know by Friday afternoon that would be great. Monday night sees John Wibberley at our meeting as Guest Speaker. I know I am looking forward to hearing John speak. The following week there is no meeting Monday night as we will be joining the Rotary Club of Boulder at their meeting to hear the Texas students give their presentation. On 7 July Graham Thompson will be our Guest Speaker to tell us how planning is progressing for Diggers and Dealers. Before closing I am very pleased to advise that our efforts for the Battle of the Brains Quiz Night saw us raise $4000.00. Well done to everyone for your efforts. Enjoy the rest of your week whilst you Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

From the Kalgoorlie Miner - 7 June 2014

Esther celebrates milestone After more than four decades of dedicated community service in the Goldfields, Esther Roadnight has reached another milestone.

Naming the Rotary Peace Park project as the crowning achievement with the club, Mrs Roadnight said it was a good example of collaboration between Rotary clubs.

The long-term Kalgoorlie-Boulder resident this month celebrated 20 years “That was a joint project with the Rotary of association with humanitarian Club of Hannans and the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie,” she said. organisation Rotary International.

Mrs Roadnight described her involvement “It was a gift to the city for the centenary of Rotary - that’s something that we have as “fantastic”. given back to the community that shows She said when she was asked to join the we value them.” club two decades ago, she jumped at the Mrs Roadnight, the incumbent Kalgoorlie opportunity. Rotary Club president, was the first “I was hooked from the word go, member inducted into the Rotary Club of because anything community just grabs Hannans and received a Paul Harris me for some reason,” Mrs Roadnight Fellow in 1996. said. The fellowship’s namesake, Mr Harris, “The important thing is being out in the founded Rotary International with three community so that everyone knows business associates in 1905 and the Rotary is there. award is bestowed upon those who have That way the community knows that if we made a substantial contribution to the organisation. can help, we will. “It’s been a wonderful 20 years and hopefully I get another 20 years.”

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

The ringing in of the new Rotary year, and a short part of Paul Harris' book "My Road to Rotary."

"The bells of Wallingford threw aside all differences on occasions when homes, stores or shops got on fire during the night. There being no linguistic difficulties, they all set up the same cry, "Wake up! There is a fire; bring along your water pails," and again, on the night preceding the Fourth of July, either of the two church bells which happened not to be guarded by a vigilant sexton, was likely to break the silence of the night with an infernal din which was not so much a celebration of the Declaration of Independence as it was an announcement of the fact that mischievous boys had eluded the watchfulness of parents and were for the time being in possession of the town. It was even rumored at times that the grave and solemn sextons of the churches were not always particularly averse to such out breaks of lawlessness but rather contrived to egg them on. How ever in one instance it is reported that the boys climbed into the belfry, attached a stout piece of string to the clapper of the bell and threw the other end of the string into the shrubbery, thus making it possible to ring the bell from the outside."
