Another one bites the dust as Issue 12 goes to press, or pdf as the case would be. Alas for an old newspaper man ‘to press’ brings back fond memories of times when the vibration of the big press could be felt throughout the building, anyway enough of the reminiscing. We’ve got the DG back in this week with an update on the Rotary Foundation and then I left the fire fire appeal poster in to remind us of what we, in Victoria, went through and the recovery efforts now needed by our northern neighbours. After that there are some beds to move, a market to wander through, a working bee in Somoa and the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians’ tournament in Adelaide next year.

The Foundation’s current flag-bearing program, ‘End Polio Now’ came from a program called Polio Plus to eradicate Polio from the world. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of Polio each year, mostly in children under the age of 5, and today 25 years on we have just two endemic countries and last year just 223 cases. We really are getting very close. But the Rotary Foundation is much more than just Polio or other major programs. In District 9800 we have been preeminent in leading the way on the Peace Scholars Program and this last week have received the news of another three successful nominations getting accepted into the Peace Program for the advancement of their studies. We have many Clubs involved in Global and District Grants performing sustainable projects in countries all around the world in areas of Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; Disease Prevention and treatment; Water and Sanitation; Maternal and Child health; Basic education and literacy and Economic and community development. Our travels around the Clubs this year simply inspires Annette and myself to get more involved in the magic of

Rotary and change more lives. We joined RC Werribee this past week welcoming their Walkers back after 200 K’s around Victoria raising serious money for the Royal Childrens’ Hospital. We have been welcomed at each and every Club we have visited and the only negative is the fact we have almost completed the 71 formal Club visits. Life will be very much different after November is finished but we will certainly be out and about at a Club or Cluster Meeting near you. One experience I would like to share from the Club visits has been to witness the interaction and activity around those Clubs hosting a Youth Exchange Student. Those Clubs involved in the program have a different vitality, a positive energy that only comes with having young people at Club meetings week after week. If your Club is currently not involved you are missing out and you too can get involved with this vibrant program and enrich your Club, just contact the D9800 Youth Exchange Committee representative near you. I have received an invitation from the Czech Republic to arrange a reciprocal Youth Exchange for the coming year – anyone interested? IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN AND WORSE THAN EVER! Public Media and the Social Networks have spread the sad news about bushfires in New South Wales much better than we can possibly describe. In essence, the situation is extremely bad and likely to get a lot worse. Fortunately, so far, there has apparently not been the dramatic loss of life as experienced on “Black Saturday”; however, the damage to property and the environment is horrendous. Also, we must not forget the psychological impact that exposure to these fires will have on survivors and others close to the event. We know that Rotary is constantly seeking to raise funds to help in all sorts of desperate and sad situations. Rotary in New South Wales donated to our call for help in February 2009, now we should return that help as best we can. Our District Disaster Relief Committee has been charged with the task of running an Appeal. We need the help of Clubs and Rotarians to raise funds that will make a meaningful contribution to the work that will be done by our colleagues in the affected areas. We know that money is hard to come by these days and therefore a modest target is being set for the D9800 effort. It does not seem unreasonable to aim for an average donation of $15 per Member in the District, that’s only the cost of three cups of coffee! We would of course be delighted to receive more generous donations than the target average. Please dig deep to help ensure that D9800 can demonstrate its genuine concern and support to our Rotary colleagues in New South Wales and the affected communities they serve.

BEDS BEDS AND MORE BEDS! Once again we have been given the opportunity to take delivery of 100 hospital beds in excellent condition from St Vincent’s Hospital. We have identified recipients for all of these beds in Chile and The Philippines where two of our clubs have established projects. The tentative date for their collection is the week commencing 9th December but this will be confirmed in due course. The beds will be loaded directly into 40ft containers for dispatch to their eventual locations. We need your assistance to carry out this task over the two days of the new beds delivery to the hospital. Can you assist Rotary to deliver this great opportunity. Camberwell Market is Major Fundraiser Balwyn Rotary Club’s Big Fund-Raiser By Tony Thomas Balwyn Rotary is among the strongest clubs in our District 9800. Its Camberwell Sunday public market, for example, raises more than a net $750,000 for charity each year.

The market mainstays are Bric-abrac, hand crafts, clothing, old wares, collectibles, tools, furniture, toys, and books. Food and coffee shops

Among the club’s biggest donations have been more than $300,000 each for the Life Education Centre, the Peer Support Foundation, and St John’s Home for Children.

Gate donations are collected by members of the Rotary Clubs of Balwyn, Canterbury, Kew on Yarra, Boroondara, and most recently Camberwell. The collections are shared proportional to the members from each club on duty. The main earner is stall fees from the 379 stallholders. Public admission, involving a gold coin, generates a lesser amount. A casual spot for a trader costs about $60 for a morning. Places are booked out at least two months in advance, and there is even a queue of wouldbe traders lining up before 5.30am for any cancellations. The market, on the Camberwell Junction Car Park, involves a dozen Rotarians weekly and two paid management staff. It runs from 7am to 12.30p.m, about 50 weeks per year. The first Rotarian helpers are on the job from 6.30a.m. The council rules are that stallholders can’t profiteer, and new goods, factory seconds and foods are banned. Most items sold are secondhand or hand-made by stallholders.

The market has been going since August 1976, when there was some internal scepticism in the club that the concept was viable. The club was then only four years old, with 30-40 members. Since then the Rotary market has raised more than $10m for about 2000 charities.

Balwyn RC has 70 members plus two honoraries. Like many clubs, it has lost some membership in recent years. Three years ago membership was about 90. One factor is movement of Balwyn people to inner-city apartments. It has met at the Eastern Golf Course, Doncaster on Tuesday evenings since 2002. But because the golf land is being redeveloped, it has 18 months to find a new club venue.

Boroondara Council issues the market lease to Balwyn RC on a tenyearly basis, and a quid pro quo is that Balwyn RC direct some of their proceeds to local charities in consultation with Boroondara Council. About a third of fund-raising has gone to Boroondara charities, a half to national projects and the rest to international causes. Balwyn RC takes a special interest in East Timor. Bendigo Clubs working in Somoa Report on Rotary aid trip to Samoa – August 2013 Rotary clubs in Bendigo have a long and proud record of supporting the Pacific island nation of Samoa following a string of natural disasters over the last 20 years. After the most severe tsunami and earthquake in late September 2009, where 119 people were killed, a public fund was established through the Bendigo Bank to support rebuilding projects in the island nation of 180,000 people. Coordinated by the Rotary club of Bendigo, teams have been travelling to Samoa utilising the funds raised to repair and upgrade weather ravaged schools. Overall coordination of the relief trips is undertaken by the Australian Rotary aid coordination agency, RAWCS, Rotary Australia World Community Services. For two and a half weeks this August, a team of nine Rotarians and community volunteers worked in Samoa undertaking repairs and refurbishments to 3 schools on the island of Savii, which is the largest of Samoa’s two main islands, but the least inhabited. Team leader, Tom Dobeli, of the Bendigo Rotary Club, said a unique feature of this year’s aid trip was the inclusion of two apprentices who ordinarily work on tram restoration at the Bendigo Tramways Museum, operated by the Bendigo Trust. “The Rotary Club of Bendigo sponsored Paul Summerskill and Scott Richardson, a cabinet maker and metal worker, respectively, whose skills proved invaluable on the trip”, Tom said. Schools at the villages of Auala, Sataua and Papa had been identified on an earlier reconnaissance trip in conjunction with officials from the Samoa Education Department, as the targets for repair and refurbishment. Samoan villages generally comprise communities of around 200 people who must form a School Committee to maintain school buildings which are initially paid

for by the government. Given the subsistence living conditions of most villages, repair and upkeep of school buildings is often a second priority. At the village of Auala the team spent considerable time working on an upstairs school wing replacing missing floorboards, installing cyclone proof wire on windows, general painting and cleaning and refurbishment of blackboards. Men from the School Committee and village worked on the ground floor of the building which had been severely damaged by strong winds, to install new concrete beams, mixed by hand, and concrete block work to create additional classrooms to replace those that had been damaged beyond repair. The school in the village of Sataua required repair to water systems and toilets whilst a program of repainting and installation of cyclone proof wire on windows was also undertaken. A significant task was the installation of new glass and louvre frames and windows in classrooms, with all louvre glass blades having to be hand cut to measure. The delicate task of reinstalling rain guttering on a highlevel two-storey roof and subsequent reinforcement of support for water discharge pipes to water tanks was superbly coordinated by one of the skilled volunteers on the team, Bob Sawyer. A small work program was also undertaken at the school in the village of Papa where repairs to plumbing systems for toilets were undertaken along with installation of new louvers for windows and general carpentry upgrades. The three villages were approximately 20 minutes apart and travel was made easier by vehicle coordination and hire arrangements undertaken by the Rotary Club of Apia, (the capital of Samoa). One of the teams’ three vehicles was provided free as a ‘Community Vehicle’ by the local Hyundai dealer. Obtaining building materials and

tools in the remote location of Savii Island also posed logistical difficulties, some of which had been solved by the Rotary Club of the Bendigo sending a shipping container fully fitted as a mobile workshop some three years earlier. The container is located at the business premises of a local Apia Rotarian and serves as a base for storage of tools and some basic materials. The team enjoyed tremendous hospitality from Samoan villagers, and were posted in local village houses, or fales, where mattresses were placed on the floor. The local village combined to produce three meals a day of local delicacies including yams, taro, breadfruit and green bananas. Of course, being beside the sea, there were also many delicacies and fresh fish and lobsters featured for meals on more than one occasion.

Another aid trip is planned for the middle of next year, which will utilise the remainder of the donated tsunami aid funds plus other funds contributed by local Rotary clubs.

I have been given your contact details by RI South Pacific, as I wanted to contact all the clubs in your District regarding the IGFR 2014 golf week, my Club the Rotary Club of Adelaide is coordinating in the 3rd week of May next year. This is being held just prior to to International Rotary Convention, being held in Sydney in the first week of June. We feel there could be a number of keen Rotary golfers, who may like to come to Adelaide first and participate in the IGFR. The event is being held at the top golf courses in Adelaide,that is Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga and The Grange Golf Clubs along with some wonderful entertainment and dinners on three different evenings. PARTNERING WITH MERCY SHIPS TO FIGHT DISEASE IN GUINEA ROTARY IN THE NEWS

Photo Credit: Mercy Ships A team of health professionals is touring Donka hospital in Conakry, Guinea, in March when they spot more than a dozen large, greenish masses covering the ground. To the U.S. team members, they look like an art installation; in fact, they are hospital gowns and surgical drapes, laundered and spread out to dry. They are a vivid example of the group’s objective: to lower deadly infection rates caused by unsterile procedures. This Rotary Foundation vocational training team is the first to serve under Rotary’s partnership with the nonprofit Mercy Ships. Rotary District 7690 in North Carolina, USA, sponsored the team with a packaged grant, part of the new Rotary grant model that launched worldwide 1 July. The team’s five members will train Guinean health professionals at the two national hospitals. The Africa Mercy, a 500-foot oceangoing hospital ship, is docked in Conakry for a 10-month medical mission. The Mercy Ships staff and visiting experts, such as this team, will tackle a range of tasks, including setting up medical and dental clinics, Rotary District 9800

conducting health screenings, performing surgeries on board, and conducting health care outreach throughout the country. The ship also will serve as a steel-hulled security blanket. “Mercy Ships looks for ways to continue helping local medical professionals after the ship leaves port, ” says Michelle Bullington, who helped advise the team. “Improving sterilization techniques would have a sustainable impact.” Rick Snider, former governor of District 7690, worked on a Mercy Ships vessel for five years with his wife, Linda, and coordinated the Guinea project. He recruited assistant governor Jenny Braswell as team leader. A recently retired public health official, Braswell has volunteered on numerous Rotary projects in rural Nicaragua and Jamaica. Her husband, Sherrill, a physician, became Braswell’s first recruit for the Guinea team. She handpicked the rest from among former public health colleagues in North Carolina. In Guinea, the team’s work begins with a tour of the century-old Ignace

Deen Hospital. Laundered gauze bandages droop over railings to dry in the sun for reuse. The wellworn examination tables have no sterile paper, and the medical units are nearly devoid of supplies and equipment such as autoclaves and medical waste boxes. Doctors and nurses provide their own rubber gloves and sterile masks and gowns. Germ-killing bleach is rare. In the generally clean wards, the patients’ family members sleep under the beds; they are the main caretakers. Food is stored on the floor where it is accessible to vermin, and flies and mosquitoes glide freely through doorways kept open to contend with the heat. The team also visits Donka hospital, where toilets are flushed with water from a pail, and power outages are common. “The staff members touch patients without gloves, going patient to patient without washing hands. There are unbandaged wounds, flies and roaches, open sewage right outside a patient facility and no sterile barriers, ” says Sherrill Braswell, adding an observation that he later

PARTNERING WITH MERCY SHIPS TO FIGHT DISEASE IN GUINEA repeats so often it sounds like a campaign slogan: “They are doing the best they can with what they have. ” For a week, the team provides training in reducing infections, covering topics such as using surgical gloves, masks, and gowns; controlling rats and mosquitoes; disinfecting with bleach; tracking infectious diseases; and hand-washing. “Fifty percent of hospital-associated infections could be prevented with hand-washing, ” Lyon says. Knowledge gaps soon become apparent. A serious misunderstanding exists about hand sanitizer: that it causes germs to stick to the hands. “It is important to clarify that hand sanitizer kills bacteria ” – particularly in a place where running water is unreliable, Jenny Braswell says. An exchange on wound care illuminates the need to treat wounds immediately to avoid infection instead of waiting until symptoms appear. Donka’s director, Hadja Fatou Sikhé

Camara, says her hospital wants to reduce infection, “but we lack the equipment and supplies. We are willing to do what you do, but as an undeveloped country, we lack the means. ” When Sherrill Braswell presses for what is needed to reduce infections, the answer is lengthy: more autoclaves, antibiotics, vaccines, bed nets, and rubber gloves, in addition to computers for blood analysis and a water tower to maintain running water. Of six operating rooms, only the new maternity units have UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation), a standard sterilization method. After decoding the health system and enduring the non-gridded power, the team accomplishes its objectives, at least according to pre- and posttests that show significant learning. Positive results also are evident in the participants, who voice a new commitment to educating family caregivers. Even small changes could have a

big impact, the team says. “If they could get patients and caregivers to wash their hands, and if they would hang up the surgical drapes instead of drying them on the ground, significant improvement would result, ” Jenny Braswell observes. But the lack of supplies and equipment cannot be ignored, she notes. Providing bars of soap would help, as would arranging for inexpensive solar-powered autoclaves for sterilizing surgical instruments. Back home in North Carolina, the team is continuing its work by trying to acquire and deliver materials the hospitals need. “The hospital workers are able to do the job,” Braswell says. “But they need the supplies. ” Read the full version of this story in the November 2013 issue of The Rotarian.
