“It constructs a fantasy that imagines, from desires in the present, how the past might have appeared.”. This quote was pulled from Stuart Franklins essay ‘Lost Eden, Traces of The Colonial Legacy’ where he is discussing Sabastio Salgado’s work. He talks about how Salgado tries to find scenes which construct an image the world expects to be true, something which is not out of the boundaries of the western mind. After reading this it forced me to think about how as humans we inevitably do the same. Be it in the media or in our own mind we are constantly building up an expectation of place. When discussing an expectation, it could be argued that it is built up through a stereotype, be it a truthful one or one of false origin. With this project I have delved into the Stereotypes of Cheltenham in an attempt to battle the pre-conceived expectations brought about through word of mouth and media created stereotypes. In hearing these stereotypes and believing them we build up this imaginary paradise which we long to exist. In an abrupt, jolting edit, this publication has come about through as a satirical documentary tour guide of the wonders of Cheltenham. Visiting the extravagant, rarely captured areas of this regency town we look into what makes Cheltenham what it truly is.
