Director's Welcome I welcome you to the Fort Dodge Parks & Recreation Summer Program Guide! As the snow begins melting this spring, sunshine & summer day recreation activities fill our thoughts. I encourage you to look through the next few pages to see what we offer that can fill some of those summer days we’re all dreaming of. Please note SUMMER MASS REGISTRATION is Saturday, April 5th, at Fort Dodge Senior High from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. Also, if you're looking to volunteer to help beautify our community, please join us for our annual Happy Trails Clean-Up April 19th. Fees All fees must be paid at the time of registration. Fees due may be paid in cash or by check. Checks should be made payable to "Fort Dodge Parks & Recreation". A $5.00 late fee will be assessed for all registrations received after the cut-off date.

Cancellations

Spring Mass Registration Mark your calendar for Mass Registration

Saturday, April 5th, 2008!

All summer programs may be registered for at this time. Mass Registration is for single-family registration only. Group sign-up will not be accepted. Look for more details to come in The Messenger and school mail.

Programs that are cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances beyond our control will be announced as soon as possible. Call 576-6888 for such information. When possible, programs will be rescheduled.

Refund/Credit Policy Cash refunds will not be made except in cases where a program/class has been cancelled. A credit voucher will be issued for the full amount to be used toward any recreational program within the next calendar year. A credit voucher/refund will NOT be issued if a class or activity is considered full. If cancellation is due to injury/re-location, written notification must be obtained for full cash refund consideration. Please remember it is the parent/guardian responsibility to remember the dates of programs their child has registered for. Credit vouchers will not be issued for missed participation.

Photo Release On occasion, our staff may take photographs/videos of participants at FD Parks & Recreation programs and activities. Any photos/videos of participants may be used for future departmental promotional materials.

New Program Ideas To improve our programming, we need to know what type of classes, workshops, programs, or special events you desire. Anyone with suggestions for programs not presently offered, please call the FD Parks & Recreation office. If an instructor can be found and enough people desire this program, we will do our best to provide it.

Summer Aquatics ( c o n t . ) RED CROSS SWIM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS EXIT SKILLS NEEDED TO PASS ARE PRINTED IN ITALICS Limit of 2 sessions per child upon approval of aquatic staff

LEVEL I · INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS Elementary aquatic skills. Good attitude and safe practices around the water. Enter water and move unassisted. Front/back float with support. There are no pre-requisites for this class however children must not be afraid of the water.

LEVEL II · FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS Gives students success with fundamental skills in chest deep water, introduction of floats/glides/front and back crawl/treading water. Student learns to front/back float without support and to recover to a vertical position, basic front/back crawl.

LEVEL III · STROKE DEVELOPMENT In deep water, introduction of diving/butterfly. Student learns coordinating the front crawl and back crawl and tread water for 30 seconds.

LEVEL IV · STROKE IMPROVEMENT Increasing endurance of front/back crawl for greater distances, introduction of open turns/breaststroke/elementary backstroke/scissor kick/surface dive. Student learns distance in front crawl/elementary backstroke/breaststroke/back crawl/treading water.

LEVEL V · STROKE REFINEMENT Coordination of surface dive/flip turns/greater distance in crawls/treading/butterfly/ breaststroke and introduction of sidestroke. Student learns distance swim in all strokes.

LEVEL VI · SKILL PROFICIENCY Students learn to swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Develop considerable endurance by end of course. Introduce basic safety rules/self-rescue. Student learns 500 continuous swim/retrieve objects from bottom of pool/survival floating.

Special Pool Activities (cont.) Co-ed Adult Water Volleyball League Plan to spend Sunday evenings at the pool, splish-splashing and playing water volleyball. Games will be scheduled for six consecutive weeks starting in June. Team rosters may have a maximum of 8 people (4 women and 4 men). All players must be at least 18 yrs old. Youth Programs Youth Track Ready...set...run! The track program is available to any boys or girls 1st - 8th grades. Youth will learn the basics of track through practice sessions held on Monday evenings including: conditioning, stretching, short sprints, long runs, relays, standing long jump and softball throw. They will not be eligible for any USA Track and Field meets. Registration for the program will be taken through FD Parks & Recreation.

Youth Programs (cont.) Mini Camp

Provided for boys and girls ages 3-6, Mini Camp serves as an introduction to the basics of different sports throughout the summer. Also included is a session in art. The cost is $85 for all sessions or $17 for a single session. Must provide your own glove and junior tennis racquet. In order to have child participate, they must have been in some kind of learning/organized activity prior to session.

SUMMER READING ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

LOCATION Rogers Park Rogers Park

This program provides reading help for K-4 students. It is intended to help struggling readers and limit summer backsliding of reading skills learned throughout the year. Foster grandparents work one-on-one with each child in thirty-minute slots Monday through Friday during the two 3-week sessions listed below. Children may participate in either or both sessions offered. Enroll at Parks & Recreation Mass Registration to select a time and coordinate summer activity schedules. SESSION ONE June 9 - June 27 *Fee is $10/session OR $25 maximum/family.

Youth Programs (cont.) Junior Golf League Open to boys and girls grades 5th through 9th, this league will be held at Sunkissed Meadows, with some play at Lakeside Golf Course. First day of league will consist of course etiquette as well as one round of golf (9 holes) to determine handicap. The league will then be played for four weeks on Wednesday mornings or evenings, with shot-gun starts. Anyone not previously in this league will need to be in golf lessons. Must have own clubs. Youth Programs (cont.) USTA Tennis League Our tennis league's emphasis is continued development for all levels of play. This league is for ages 8-18 years old. Children 8-10 years old required to be enrolled in tennis lessons. Singles and doubles will be played each week. Student may choose what days they will attend in order to play twice a week. Parks PARK RULES & REGULATIONS The parks are open from sunrise to sunset every day. We need your help to keep our parks safe and enjoyable for all...so please keep the following in mind when using your parks: • Please drive only on established roadways • Fires are only allowed in designated areas and trash must be picked up at all times. • No dogs shall run at large in any city park. Leashes of no more than 6 feet should be used. • Please respect trees, shrubs and plants in all parks. • Please report acts of vandalism to police or FD Parks & Recreation at 576-7237.

Prominent City Parks with Cabin Rentals Snell-Crawford Park Williams Drive & 12th Ave North Cabin with fireplace has a 40 - 45 person capacity. Park includes: three sand volleyball courts, backstop, play equipment, Frisbee golf course, walking trail, picnic tables and grills, and public restroom.

Hydro-Electric Park 4th Avenue Northwest & 1st Street Cabin with fireplace has a 40 - 45 person capacity. Park includes: basketball court, backstop, play equipment, tennis court, boat ramp, picnic tables and grills, restroom open with cabin rental.

Loomis Park Hawkeye Avenue & Loomis Park Drive Cabin #3, with fireplace, has a 75 - 80 person capacity. Park has play equipment, picnic tables and grills, water fountain, and public porta-potty.

Oleson Park 12th Avenue South & 17th Street Cabin has 60 - person capacity. Handicapped accessible park, new splash pad, bathhouse, new play equipment being installed, spring riders, swing set, animal zoo, band shell, four open shelters, volleyball court, benches, picnic tables and grills, public restroom, water fountains, open space for activities, and mountain bike trail through woods. Reservations can be made at FD Parks & Recreation in City Hall. We begin taking reservations for 2008 the first business day in January. We do not take reservations over the phone. Forestry Department Forestry Department Phone: 573-5791 Proud Recipient of the Tree City Award for the past 26 years! Fort Dodge Parks & Recreation is proud to have a full-service Forestry Depart- ment under its auspices. City Forestry provides trimming and/or pruning of residential trees, removing dead, dying, hazardous or diseased trees from the parking or other city property. They also grind out and remove stumps from the parking and city property and refill holes with black dirt and compost. Forestry provides other miscellaneous care of cracked and/or injured trees and they provide information in regard to insect/disease problems infecting trees.

Recreatinal Trail System The park system presently has three trails that are now linked together providing social, recreational, and economic benefits to the community.

Fort Dodge Nature Trail - 3 miles

Begins at Williams Drive at Snell-Crawford park entrance and leads northeast to the city limits ending at Highway D-14. The nature trail is good for walking, biking, jogging, and cross-country skiing.

Soldier Creek Nature Trail - 2 miles

Begins at Williams Drive and leads southwest under North 3rd Street Bridge to Central Avenue, then West and North to Hawkeye Avenue Bridge. The trail is 10' wide and asphalted to Central Avenue, switching to concrete from Central Avenue to Hawkeye Bridge. Good for walking, biking, rollerblading, and skateboarding.

Phinney Park Trail - 1 mile

Begins at Phinney Park entrance and leads south along the Des Moines River to Avenue C Hill. The trail is 10' wide and all asphalted. Good for walking, biking, rollerblading, and skateboarding. *All trails are closed to motorized vehicles.

Rogers Sports Complex "Building on Tradition" Home of Dodger Softball & Gael Softball/Baseball Recipient of the ISTMA's 2007 Softball Field of the Year (Diamond #1) North on 15th Street Across from the Airport Be a major leaguer at the Mini Majors!! Look for play to begin on Dodger, Yankee, Wrigley, and Fenway Parks during the month of May. Rogers Sports Complex located on North 15th Street across from the Airport will again host the Iowa Girls State High School Softball State Championships for the 39th year in a row. The tournament has made a move up to the middle of July; it will start the 14th and run through the 18th. Other highlights include hosting the ASA, MSP E West State Tournament, Iowa Region XI Women's Junior College Tourney and the Fort Dodge Senior High Invite, along with local baseball, softball, and soccer tournaments. The Rogers staff is proud to say the park is home to Gael softball and baseball and Dodger softball along with local recreation youth softball and YMCA baseball.
