“I’m writing this on the day that my sister and I scattered Maida’s ashes on a beautiful Scottish beach, in clear view of the uninhabited island of Ailsa Craig. I miss her in a way I don’t really have words to describe, but I recognize that my awareness of her loss is changing. When she first died my reaction was visceral and raw. Almost eighteen months on, the sadness and ever present awareness of her absence remain, but they’re softer and accompanied by many great memories. Thoughout her 87 years she maintained a sense of fun and liveliness, leaving us with an abundance of Grandma sayings and stories. They don’t fill the gap, but they give us something to hold on to.” Christine Young, 2019
