This year the Curious School of Puppetry – a dynamic, short fulltime course which nurtures the development of excellence in puppetry performance in the UK – is based in Edinburgh. Three of its recent graduates present examples of their work created during their training.

Ella Mackay/Scotland A burlesque-inspired hand-tease celebrating the fluidity, versatility and down-right sexy movement a hand can perform. Small appendage... big bravado!

RAGNARÖK Tortoise In A Nutshell/Scotland The world is breaking. Years of frozen winters and endless nights have been followed by raging fires and infernal wars. Small huddles of humanity live in fear of the next attack from the skies. This is the Ragnarök. A glimpse of a new piece in development by multi award-winning company, Tortoise in a Nutshell.

Sarah Bebe Holmes/Scotland, USA Highlighting themes of choice, chance, science and mortality, an autobiographical tale about a young woman who gave her eggs. With live music and aerial choreography on plastics, Egg explores the physical distortion and discomfort of the effects of hormones on the body, and the complexity created through the use of science to make a family.

Freda O’Byrne / Scotland Based on research and testimonies, one man’s chilling and de-humanising experiences as the first suspect to be taken into CIA detention.

Katie Armstrong/Scotland A bite-sized snippet of dance which explores, through the meeting of two people, the complexities of the 1st movement of JS Bach’s Violin Concerto.

NOTHING Faux Theatre/Scotland Fight/lose, breathe/suffocate, try/fail. A purposefully low-tech physical exploration of the force and grip of intense depression, that place where nothing matters.

LOVE: INSPIRED BY SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS Ludens Ensemble/Scotland, Cyprus An excerpt of the company’s latest production which uses mapping projections, interactive animations, object manipulation and a DJ to dramatize Shakespeare’s beautiful and insightful poems.
