Police force selected as finalist for Dementia Friendly Awards

Numerous steps towards maintaining the safety of people with dementia has led to Bedfordshire Police being shortlisted for a national charity award.

The police force which adopted the Herbert Protocol scheme earlier this year – designed to not only prevent someone with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or memory problems going missing but to improve responses for locating them if they do – has been nominated in the Dementia Friendly organisation of the Year (Large) category at Alzheimer’s society’s Dementia Friendly Awards 2017.

This award recognises businesses and organisations including leisure, tourism, the arts, emergency services, health and social care and celebrates large-scale efforts to be more dementia friendly.

Bedfordshire Police holds a quarterly internal dementia champions forum and has also worked with the university of Bedfordshire to develop bespoke police dementia training.

lar involvement at Bedford and Luton Dementia Action Alliances, hosted a singing for the Brain session and Alzheimer’s society roadshow at Police Headquarters and has raised money in various ways. “one of our main priorities has been to launch the Herbert Protocol. What made this service unique to us and those living with dementia across Bedfordshire, is having a Dementia support Worker from Alzheimer’s society working in our missing person team two days a week to provide further direct support to families affected.

“The overall objective is to reduce the number of people going missing from home and reduce the number of repeat occurrences so people stay safe.

“We have about 100 people living with dementia reported as missing every year across the county, in addition to people that are reported as missing more than once. “since the project launched we have registered over 50 people to the scheme and have conducted 15 home visits.”

Central Beds Council hosts national zoo training seminar

IN recognition of its expertise in the sector, yesterday Central Bedfordshire Council hosted a seminar at ZsL Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable to advise other authorities on undertaking successful zoo inspections.

The seminar was attended by over 50 different local authorities who were seeking to understand the meticulous process of undertaking a high standard zoo inspection. under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, local authorities must undertake zoo inspections before and after issuing a zoo licence.

Licences are initially provided for a period of four years, with subsequent renewal licences issued for a six year period.

Central Bedfordshire has three very successful zoos in the area, including Whipsnade which is the largest zoo in the uK. The council has two dedicated and experienced officers who inspect each zoo on a yearly basis. The council also employs veterinary surgeons and other animal welfare and zoo specialists to assist. These zoo inspections must be very detailed and thorough to ensure that the zoo operates to a high standard and that animal welfare and public safety are top priority.

The conference covered a range of topics, including pre-inspection preparations, when to carry out special inspections when things go wrong, typical complaints and issues, and how to enforce and

improve standards at zoos.

The seminar started with a welcome from Councillor Caroline maudlin, Deputy executive member for Community services at Central Bedfordshire Council. This was followed by talks by experts from organisations such as the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and richard Johns, environmental Health officer at Central Bedfordshire Council. richard Johns said: “We were very pleased and proud to host this event and welcome such a large number of guests. This sort of training isn’t widely offered, so it was great to share our expertise with other authorities. our seminar provided an excellent opportunity to share the effective zoo inspection knowledge that we as a council have gained. We intend to arrange future zoo training events for other local authorities who were unable to attend this event”.

Councillor Caroline maudlin said: “The day was a great success, and I heard lots of positive comments from attendees. I’m delighted that the council is recognised for being such a successful authority. To help improve overall standards in uK zoos, we will continue to contribute to the All Party Parliamentary Zoos and Aquarium Group at Westminster, and to advise and share best practice with other local authorities.”

Councillor clocks up 25 years’ service Cllr Michael Scott has completed 25 years of continuous public service as a Sandy Town Councillor. The occasion was marked in the Town Council Chamber on Monday 6 November when Councillor Scott was presented with an award to mark the occasion in recognition of his long service to the town.

On behalf of the community the current Town Mayor, Cllr Colin Osborne, expressed sincere thanks for this loyal and committed service. The Mayor also recognised the contribution of Mrs lynda Scott who has loyally supported her husband as he has performed his civic duties.

During the last 25 years Cllr Scott has been involved in numerous projects and works and has represented the Council and the town across Central Bedfordshire. Cllr Scott joined the Town Council in 1992 and served as Town Mayor from 1999 to 2001. Cllr Scott is currently Chair of the Policy Finance and resources Committee and serves as Deputy Mayor.

Great opportunities for young people

IN october 2014, Bedfordshire Youth united was launched by Lord Lieutenant Helen Nellis.

It was set up to encourage more young people to join one of the organisations and some have since found their numbers increasing.

The organisations involved are: Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, Boys Brigade, Fire and rescue Cadets, Girl Guiding, Girls Brigade, Police Cadets, scouts, sea Cadets and st John Ambulance.

Adult volunteer, Nigel Taylor said: “The idea behind Bedfordshire Youth united is to make people aware of the many opportunities there are for young people right across the County.

The ten organisations provide a wide range of activities that will benefit young people in Bedfordshire. organisations such as Guides and scouts provide a great number of different fun activities for people aged from five to 25.

“The Fire and rescue Cadets, the Police Cadets and the Army Cadets will help teenagers learn about team building, leadership and team work.” Nigel added: “When we attend community events people often tell us they didn’t know of this organisation or that organisation. By getting out to community events we can demon-

strate some of the activities each of the organisations do on a regular basis.”

Nigel also said, “We often hear the saying, “There isn’t anything for children and teenagers to do”.

Celebrating 1000 years of volunteering

From 18 to 80 you’re never too old to volunteer as a Bedfordshire Girl Guide Leader. sunday 5th November saw the annual, Valuing our Volunteers Awards Ceremony, held at the millhouse Hotel & restaurant, sharnbrook, Bedford.

This year the awards were in a number of categories, from five years’ service to an outstanding 60 years service.

The ladies honoured have, between them, given over 1000 years of volunteering, to work with girls and young women from all across Bedfordshire. sandra Cove a leader in Kempston received her award for 50 years service and Valerie Cousins from the Dunstable Division her 60

years service award, an exceptional achievement.

Georgina Barrett received her Queens Guide Award and sue Champkins from the Luton Division her Laurel Award in recognition of her outstanding service to guiding.

Valerie said: “Girl-guiding has become part of my life, being a member of the Guiding movement has given me so much over the past 60 years, fun, friendship, and adventure.”

Valerie added: “I am now very much looking forward to the next 60!”

This year, for the first time in over a decade, Girlguiding Bedfordshire can boast a membership of over 5,000 across the region.

Standing room only at Greene King Reunion

more than 100 people packed into the Biggleswade Conservative Club for the 20 Year Greene King reunion on saturday 28 october 2017, following the closure of the Brewery on 31 october 1997. every seat was taken and others mingled in the centre of the room or around the bar area. organisers Bev Beddall and Bruce odell confirmed on the night: “We are amazed at the turn out, as tickets were not sold beforehand”. Derek Whinnett agreed: “it’s an excellent turn out and great to see people after 20 years”. Chris Halsey was having to go back over 40 years to recapture her time in a Greene King pub and said: “it’s a really interesting evening recognising people’s faces and trying to put names to them”. Beryl morrell referred to the night as ‘a walk down memory lane’ but marion Peck stated: “I wondered if I was at the right place – we all look different”. John Peace was well pleased, saying: “it’s great to see everyone – we will have to do it again”! Verna

Bull reiterated: “What a great evening” as she seemed to remember everyone she had worked with and also knew where some of them worked since. The comments kept coming, ‘marvellous turn outl (Joe Barford), ‘Lovely to see some old faces’ (John and michelle miller), “I reckon there’s 110 people here,” said steve Desborough, still in stocktaking mode. Bob Watts summed it all up admirably: “It’s so nice to see all of our workmates and friends and especially on an evening like

tonight, to remember those workmates who are no longer with us”.

The nostalgia continued throughout the evening, which was also a Charity Night. The raffle took place with numerous prizes brought along on the night or collected in beforehand from individuals and local Companies and the evening raised a fantastic £700! Bev and Bruce were delighted to present £350 to sue sheppard for re-think, in memory of her daughter Charlotte and £350 to Linda Butcher for

Bev and Bruce conclude: “We were delighted with last year’s trial run and so overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm at The 20 Year Greene King reunion, we’re hoping to make it an Annual Greene King Charity reunion”.

Whilst the Brewery closed its doors 20 years ago, the passion of the ex-employees continues – Cheers to 20 years and many more.

Council express concern bank closure aT a meeting of the Community Services and environment Committee on Monday 20th November 2017 Members of Sandy Town Council discussed Barclays recent announcement that it intends to close its Sandy branch in February 2018. Councillors expressed concern over the possible negative impact the closure of the bank would have and the implications for local businesses and residents. Members noted that while more people are using internet banking there are

still many people who rely on banking services within the town and find it difficult to reach alternative branches.

The Committee agreed that a meeting should be sought with a representative of Barclays and a letter of complaint issued outlining the Council’s concerns and its objection to the closure of the bank, along with the way in which it has been communicated to customers and the community. The Council are urging Barclays to reconsider their deci-

Photo competition winners announced

CPre Bedfordshire has announced the winners of its photo competition.

The competition was run to mark the charity’s 30th anniversary, during which time it has worked to promote and protect the countryside of Bedfordshire.

The theme for the competition was ‘Bedfordshire: A Changing Landscape’, and we received 89 entries, each of which offers a different perspective on our beautiful county.

First prize – Blowing in the Wind: Combining the modern wind turbines with a traditional cornfield by David Bond. (Pictured below) This dynamic shot shows a backdrop of contrasting wind turbines against a cloudy sky, set against a yellow field of barley in Langford. The judges especially liked the colour, contrast and composition of the shot.

The wind turbines also reflect a recent change in the countryside across Bedfordshire.

Although they have been the subject of controversial planning decisions, turbines are now a largely accepted feature in many of our landscapes and represent a shift towards a more sustainable use of our natural resources. In this shot, the judges felt that the photographer has found harmony between the new turbines and the agricultural landscape.

runner-up – Morning glory by Joe McDonald This striking image shows a farmer at work as the sun rises over a field in Little staughton. The judges especially liked the mood of the image, and the composition. Farming remains one of the most significant uses of land in Bedfordshire and will continue to have a huge impact on the character of its landscapes.

Have your say on how your local community is represented

resIDeNTs in Central Bedfordshire are being given the opportunity to have a say on how local communities are represented by parish or town councils.

As part of its first ever Local Governance review, the Central Bedfordshire Council is asking the public what changes, if any, they would like to see to the 78 parish areas within Central Bedfordshire.

Parish or town councils are typically responsible for looking after certain local facilities such as allotments, bus shelters, parks, playgrounds, public seats, public toilets, public clocks, village or town halls, maintenance of footpaths, cemeteries, village greens and various leisure and recreation facilities but this can vary between councils.

This review is an opportunity to look at parish boundaries.

Although most boundary areas make geographical sense, as Central Bedfordshire’s population has grown, there are now some areas where the parish boundaries might seem strange. This review presents an opportunity to change this.

The Council wants to hear residents’ views on whether they think their town or parish council is properly reflecting the needs of their local community.

Cllr richard Wenham, Deputy Leader and executive member for Corporate resources said: “This consultation is a valuable opportunity for people living in Central Bedfordshire to have their say, as part of the democratic process, on the local representation.

We hope that people respond to the questionnaire to let us know if they think there should be changes to their parish or town council.

“This will be the first time in a number of years that residents will have had the chance to affect change in the way they are represented on a local level. It may be a boundary change, the number of councillors in their parish, creating a new parish, merging parishes or sub-dividing a parish into smaller wards.

“Although it may sound like quite an obscure thing to ask people to consider, it is something that will impact on the many communities within Central Bedfordshire.”

Biggleswade Flower Club

CToBer 2017 – The meeting was extremely well attended including some new members and one visitor. Chairman Pat Whitworth welcomed everyone and then introduced Lesley sturdy who demonstrated beautiful arrangements taking us on a tour ‘Around the World’.

We began in the Caribbean, under the sea with pale greens and delicate pink. New Zealand was our next stop, a white and green vertical display gave us a snowy cascade and a horizontal design gave a representation of ‘great white cloud’.

Homeward bound brought us to singapore full of exotic palms, lilies and of course stunning orchids. A jungle scene gave us India, green orange and gold.

Then we found ourselves in France. A touch of ooh la la with a blousy can-can skirt topped with elegant willowy rose. Then we were treated to a stunning explosion of colour, climbing fuchsia, chrysanthemums, golden rod, trailing clematis and much more. We had arrived in england of course.

Gill Clarke gave the vote of thanks and we finished with the raffle and refreshments for those who were in need of sustenance after the journey.

Biggleswade Ivel Evening Townswomen Guild

HAIrmAN Chris Davies welcomed members and visitors to the meeting of the Biggleswade Ivel evening Townswomen Guild on 13th November.

Chris introduced Peter Holden who was to talk about ‘Garden Wildlife’. Peter introduced himself as having worked at the rsPB for forty years and now was a guest lecturer on cruise ships. He had been one of the instigators of the Big Bird Count in corroboration with Blue Peter to engage children with wildlife. He went onto enthral the ladies with a masterly presentation of birds and small animals whilst giving a fascinating talk full of interesting information. He even had recordings of different bird song. members thoroughly enjoyed his talk. Bobbie Ball gave a vote of thanks for a most interesting and entertaining evening.

Chris & Ann had laid the wreath at the remembrance Day Parade on behalf of the Guild. The Guild Walk had taken place with the ladies strolling round old Walden and enjoying lunch after at shuttleworth. Details were given for the Federation Carol service at Walsworth road Baptist Church on saturday 9th December commencing at 11am.

The National Carol service at Coventry Cathedral on 12th December coach will also be leaving from the Town Centre at 8.30am. The schedules for the Arts & Crafts Festival in october 2018 were available for the members.

Chris closed the meeting, reminding the members that the next meeting will be on monday 11th December which would be the Christmas Party. she reminded the members to bring a plate of festive food and crockery. There will be a Bring & Buy stall and she hoped that everyone would bring at least one item and also purchase one. The competition will be a Christmas Bauble – it doesn’t need to be handmade but just one of the member’s favourites from their decorations. All visitors very welcome.

NN Taylor, Chairman, welcomed the members of the Ivel Valley u3A to their october social Afternoon. The Annual General meeting had gone very well and the refreshments had been appreciated.

We had received an invitation to participate in the remembrance Day Parade. Brian Tobin, roy schneider and Terry Clements represented the group.

There was also an invitation to the AGm and campaigns of Bedfordshire Age uK. Book Group 1 met on Tuesday 7th November at Jean William’s house.

Book Group 2 met on Friday 10th November at Jean Webb’s house. The craft group met at Ann Taylor’s house on 16th November. The music Group met on 21st November at Val mcsweeney’s house. Ann reminded those members that the money is due for the outing to Worcester Christmas markets on the 1st December and should be paid to her in Chris’s absence.

There are still spaces available for the Christmas Lunch on Wednesday 13th December at roxton Garden Centre at a cost of £13.50. Names to be given to Audrey Yaxley.

The meeting was then handed over to Brian Tobin who entertained the members with a magic show. Then followed a delightful afternoon where the members were amazed, amused and thoroughly entertained by the dexterity of a fellow member. As one member remarked it had been the best afternoon’s entertainment she had had for a very long time. Ann thanked Brian for sharing his talent with the members and making it such an enjoyable occasion.

Ann then introduced the speaker, Wendy Holden, who was to talk about her book ‘Born survivors’.

Wendy began by telling the members that she had been a journalist for eighteen years, including a decade at the Daily telegraph where she worked as a foreign and war correspondent. Her book was about three women imprisoned in concentration camps, all giving birth under unimaginable circumstances with their babies weighing less than three pounds. The heart wrenching story of the conditions that these extraordinary young mothers endured was extremely moving. The fact that they survived was a tribute to their courage and defiance. seventy years on their three children met to tell their remarkable stories. sally Clements gave the vote of thanks for a most interesting and poignant afternoon.

Before closing the meeting the Chairman spoke about The Ivel Flix Community Cinema and the need to support this local amenity. If there were not more customers then the Cinema would have to shut down, The 2017/18 programme was available to take. Anyone would be welcome to visit.

Royal Artillery Association

He Biggleswade Branch of the royal Artillery Association held a Branch meeting on 1st November 2017. The Chairman recited The royal Artillery Prayer. sixteen members were present, and apologies were received from two members.

The minutes of the october Branch meeting were read. The Treasurers report was received. It was reported that returns for the Christmas Lunch on 15th December were progressing well.

The regimental Family newsletter for october has been distributed by email. Correspondence regarding the rAA Annual Awards and the rA Charitable Fund was discussed.

The Chairman told the members that the standard Bearer attended the funeral of eileen Wells on behalf of the Branch, and was wearing the new standard Bearers Badge on his uniform The President and mrs. Harragan represented the Branch at the ABF Curry Lunch at JITG, Chicksands on october 8th. The Armistice Day Ceremony took place saturday 11th November 2017 in the market square and the remembrance Day Parade parade took place on sunday 12th November 2017. The wreath was laid by Dave Knight. The meeting closed at 14.45 hrs.

The royal Artillery Association exists to look after the welfare of and foster comradeship between members of the royal Artillery both serving and retired. ex-service personnel of other Arms or regiments who wish to share the camaraderie are welcome. In the nineteenth century German Protestants marked off each day up to Christmas either by lighting a candle or simply making a chalk mark; a way of focusing their lives on the coming celebration of the birth of Jesus. early in the twentieth century Gerhart Lang advanced this by printing the first cardboard Advent Calendar with the familiar windows to be opened each day through December up to the 24th.

I recall as a child opening each window in turn and discovering the picture that would tell something of the Christmas story.

It was part of marking the season of Advent – a word that means ‘coming’ – that is the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day. A time in the Church’s year where the emphasis is on prayer, penitence and preparation; a time of waiting and being ready to once again celebrate the new-born Jesus.

A long way from the celebration of Advent!

Advent is a season of prayer, of simplicity, of love for others, of focusing on Jesus; and yet these so-called ‘Advent Calendars’ tell a different story. Instead of prayer, it is marketing and commerce. Instead of simplicity, it is giving in yet again to consumerism.

In the place of a concern for others it is pampering oneself – the Liberty Beauty Calendar offered fifteen luxury beauty products. Instead of Jesus there is worship of the material things we idolise.

The much reported decision of Greggs the bakers to use in their calendar an image of the shepherds surrounding a manger that contains instead of Jesus a partly eaten sausage roll, is a sad indictment of our times, I invite you to think again this Advent. To rediscover that sense of waiting and expectation.

To focus on others and Jesus. maybe even look for a traditional Advent Calendar and get back to the meaning of this season.

It is wonderful to have such a great community that joins together to support local children and families.

The raffle will be held at our Christmas Fayre on 9th December 10.00 am–12.00 pm at the Lawns Nursery school. The Nursery school has supported many families in Biggleswade over the years, and it is heart-warming when local people and businesses are able to give something back.

The facilities are also used by the Biggleswade Children’s centre. Last year we managed to raise enough money to purchase a fantastic wooden truck for the garden, this year we would like to buy the caravan that goes with it. As well

as a raffle, there will be games, crafts, a tombola, refreshments and lots more activities to get you in the mood for Christmas, so come along and have a festive fun family morning out.

Short Mat Bowls comes to Sandy

sANDY Town Bowling Club has introduced short mat Bowling as a new activity for its members. short mat bowling is played on a ‘mat’ which is shorter than a standard bowling green, but which can be rolled up and stored away. so sandy Town BC members are now able to play weekly bowls matches in sandy village Hall. sandy Town BC Chairman mick evans said: “We are grateful to have received a sport england Lottery Award which enables us to enjoy this social and sporting activity throughout the winter months when we are unable to play on our outdoor green.”

Concert Band date

THe next east Beds Concert Band Christmas Concert will take place at 6.30pm on Saturday 2nd December at Stratton Upper School in Biggleswade.

Fighting for our communities

THe Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, Councillor James Jamieson and Bedfordshire mPs met with sajid Javid, secretary of state for Com munities and Local Government, last month to discuss Government proposals for increased housing.

The Department for Com munities and Local Government launched a consultation called ‘Planning for the right homes in the right places’ which would see a 60% increase on the number of homes that would need to be built in Central Bedfordshire.

Hot on the heels of submitting the Council’s formal response to the consultation the Leader of the Council has met with sajid Javid along with mPs Nadine Dorries and Andrew selous to discuss the proposals.

Council Leader James Jamieson said: “We are really con-

cerned that the proposed new housing numbers are currently unrealistic and undeliverable. If the Government are serious about increasing house building they need to do more to help councils hold developers to account to deliver this growth, otherwise it simply won’t happen. “equally as important to us is that growth is sustainable; that means homes are built alongside the services, jobs and road and rail infrastructure. Development should not be to the detriment of existing communities and to ensure this we need investment in critical infrastructure up front.”

“The meeting was a great opportunity to explain how the Government’s proposals would affect our community and how the Government can help us ensure growth is well managed and sustainable.”

Garden waste collection to be suspended for the winter

KerBsIDe collection of household garden waste will be suspended across Central Bedfordshire over the winter months.

The collections will be suspended from monday, 4 December 2017 until Friday 2, march 2018 inclusive.

The decision to stop the kerbside collection service during the quietest time of the year for garden waste was made as part of the council’s financial planning process, and comes as a result of Government funding cuts. Council tax alone doesn’t raise enough to cover all the services the council provides, and so the council focuses on delivering services that meet the periods of high demand, in this case restricting garden waste collections to during the growing season.

During the suspension, garden waste can still be recycled at the council’s recently improved Household Waste recycling Centres.

Alternatively, residents with enough space in their gardens are encouraged to compost at home All Central Bedfordshire residents are eligible for a discount on compost bins and accessories under a council scheme to encourage composting.

The illustration, from the back page of the booklet, is an advertisement for the well-known ‘Stingo’ ale produced at the time by Biggleswade’s Wells & Winch (later Greene King) Brewery. No doubt, ‘Stingo’ was responsible for making many of the town’s Merry Gentlemen even merrier over the days of Christmas.

He guide was stuffed with advertisements for the wares of local shopkeepers and businesses vying for trade during the runup to Christmas. There were offers and vouchers, shopping tickets, a grand draw offering tempting cash prizes, and details of the seasonal entertainments on offer – from a special football match at Fairfield to a carol singing contest at George’s Hall, a whist drive and dance, and outdoor performances by the town band.

The empire cinema advertised a full programme, even on Christmas Day, with seat prices ranging from seven pence to one shilling and sixpence. Furthermore, The empire boasted that it was the only cinema in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire ‘fitted up with special headphones for the deaf’ (free of charge) and with ‘the Gardner Gold fibre screen to prevent eye strain.’ opposite the Town Hall also sold so, what could the good people wines and spirits; whisky, rum or gin of Biggleswade get for their money could be had there for as little as ten 85 years ago? £1 would buy 32 bot- shillings (50p) a bottle. spong & tles of stingo! 4. There was an audience of 58 on 6 November for David short’s talk, ‘The Good, Indifferent and outrageous’, about the history of Ashwell’s merchant Taylors school and some of its schoolmasters. The original 17th century school house still stands in mill street in Ashwell and is now a private home. It was built and endowed in 1681 by the merchant Taylors’ Livery Company of London as the result of a bequest of Henry Colbron, a wealthy scrivener (law writer) who owned land and property in Ashwell and died in 1655. After the education Act of 1870

requiring parishes to provide education for all of their children, the merchant Taylors school was enlarged and continued to serve Ashwell alongside the new Victorian Board schools, and from 1933 was the local co-educational school for 11-14 year-olds, increasingly funded and managed by Hertfordshire County Council. After its closure as a school in 1947 the LeA continued to run it for a further fifty years as a further education centre, local library and various community services, including, in the 1970s, a field study centre, which is when local historian David came to Ashwell and began his involvement with the centre and the life of the village. more information about the school may be found on the website of Ashwell Village museum.

1903 De Dietrich’s return to the historic London to Brighton run

uNDAY 5 November 2017 saw the The shuttleworth Collection’s 1903 De Dietrich take part in the London to Brighton Veteran car run, successfully making it to Brighton in under six hours! The London to Brighton Veteran Car run is the longest-running motoring event in the world, and takes place on the first sunday of every November and commemorates the emancipation run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It’s a rare opportunity for extraordinary veteran automobiles to make the historic 60-mile journey from Hyde Park in central London to the seafront in Brighton, sussex. every year more than 400 examples of pre-1905 manufactured vehicles enter to celebrate the pioneering spirit and quality of engineering of early motoring. made in 1903 by the De Dietrich Company in Luneville, France who originally produced locomotives and rolling stock - by 1900 the company had diversified into building motor cars to other companies’ designs under licence. This original car has been successfully restored over three years by a team of volunteers from The shuttleworth Collection’s vehicle team, under the guidance of Vehicle Collection manager, stuart Gray. The project was made lengthy by the amount of research being undertaken before work began, and the sourcing of original parts. stuart said the reason behind such painstaking preparation work was to that “our mission as the shuttleworth vehicle team is to restore these cars to as close to their original work specification as possible. The De Dietrich has been repainted and overhauled, and most importantly it has been returned to its original low tension ignition system.”

This desire to restore to original and working condition was the key driver behind richard shuttleworth collecting the exhibits that still form the heart of The shuttleworth Collection today.

The De Dietrich was one of his own vehicles that was first owned by sir George mcKenzie of

Tempsford Park and originally fitted with a Tonneau four seater body. It was purchased by richard shuttleworth and registered to him in November 1928 and he fitted the present ‘racing’ body. As he was a passionate racing driver he drove on many circuits, and this De Dietrich returned to drive at Brooklands this June for the first time since it was last driven there by richard in the 1930s. richard enjoyed the London to Brighton Veteran Car run immensely, taking part many times with friends and family including his mother Dorothy shuttleworth who preserved his collection after his death and opened it up to the public in 1963 at what is today a world class vintage airshow venue and all year round visitor attraction.

This year the De Dietrich was crewed by volun-

teers and engineers from The shuttleworth Collection, with the spirit of richard shuttleworth firmly with them from the freezing cold start to warm celebrations as this marvellous 1903 automobile once again returned to cross the finish line and take her place at Brighton pier before the journey home to Bedfordshire!

The shuttleworth Collection is home to many of richard’s other exhibits and the best collection of genuine WWI airworthy aircraft in europe, alongside other historic gems including the race winning 1934 DH88 Comet and 1904 Aurora motorcycle – the only one still in existence, and the largest Clayton & shuttleworth collection in one place, all with an adjacent period regency swiss Garden. Great to see Tony ‘magical’ Burnett back after a long lay off and he waded in with a strike on 56, to complete the nights scoring.

The conditions made it difficult but two positives, City played well, a brand of football that will surely put them back in the southern premier, the Waders boosting confidence to move on again.

IT was fascinating to watch two teams, local rivals, to battle out the 90 minutes for tomorrow’s bragging rights. At the end maybe the Waders edged it on points, but then cut me in half and I am lettered green. It was fast and furious with passion from our boys not seen in recent weeks. Tony”magical” Burnett hit the bar early on and robbie Parker was unlucky with the rebound. Clear chances were not in abundance and neither side looked like scoring although the saints hit the bar midway through the second period.

An enjoyable game and the most important aspect is it has broken the series of defeats, so perhaps we can gain confidence and get back to winning ways. Lose a few games and this league is like snakes and ladders. We got bit by the snake at Chesham and have

been sliding ever since. Now with a foot on the first rung maybe just maybe. It’s so quick to slide down those snakes but getting back up takes effort and time.

CoNTINuING our theme of snakes and ladders, another step upward was gained against fairly local rivals Kings Langley, who it must be said came with thoughts of re-introducing the snake.

The first 2 minutes saw home debutant Greg Kaziboni show some tricky footwork skipping down the right wing and crossing to Tony Burnett. His snap shot made the opposition keeper martin Bennett get his knees dirty early as he pushed the ball round the post. The resulting corner was met with a powerful header from Connor Hall just over the bar. Why does it change? as the Waders retreated into their shells. Langley started playing some attractive football and looked the more likely but Gooch and co. kept the score line at 0-0 by the break but it was nervous on occasions.

Although half time for me is spent e mailing half time scores to those that need to know, not far from the home changing room, there was not raised voices and Chris Nunn’s quiet style did the trick. Like a different side, the Waders came out with a new resolve to make the 3 points Bedfordshire bound by the final whistle. more players were pushed forward and Kaziboni and Tyler Walker linked well together on the right wing. on 60 the link play saw Greg Kaziboni deliver a cross to the lethal Liam Brooks to put the Waders one to the good. At the other end Langley offered nothing not testing Gooch in the second period. on 76 the game was made safe. A slide rule precision pass from Jordan Patrick sent Brooks away again and he made no mistake bypassing the keeper with his shot. Joy has returned to the Langford road as Biggleswade continue to improve and try to get back to that early season form.

Founded in 2014 by residents of sandy and surrounding areas, we are a group of keen astronomers of all abilities.

We meet on the first Thursday of every month at mamas Coffee shop (High street, sandy) and have regular viewing sessions on the grounds of sandye Place Academy.

You don’t need to own a telescope to join in. Club members are always willing to share their equipment and expertise, and if you become a member our club telescopes are available for hire for a small fee.
