Title

A continuation of this cosmic conflict stands at the center of the book of Revelation. A great dragon—the same serpent that slithered into Eden so long ago—makes war with a woman, her Son, and her offspring. Yet the dragon is ultimately defeated (Revelation 12:1–17). Jesus of Nazareth, the seed of Eve and the Messiah of Israel, was bruised by the serpent on Golgotha’s cross (Isaiah 53:5, 10). Yet he also sealed the serpent’s defeat when he rose from the dead. Through his defeat of the dragon, Jesus opened the way to a new Eden; in Jesus, a new exodus began that will lead God’s people to a new heaven and a new earth. Temptation of Christ, by Ary Sheffer (1854).

Adam Failed

Jesus Conquered

Adam was tempted in fantasy-like surroundings and failed.

Jesus was tested on the verge of starvation in the wilderness and triumphed (Matthew 4:1–11).

Adam’s sin plunged the human race into wickedness, ruin, and death.

The obedient sacrifice of Jesus brought righteousness and life (Romans 5:12–21; 1 Corinthians 15:21–22).

The first Adam's actions brought about a curse.

Jesus broke the curse of the first Adam and became the “last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45; see also Romans 5:14).

Adam brought about death and despair to humanity.

As the last Adam, Jesus brought a new beginning for humanity and new hope for the human race.

Eden and Adam stand at the beginning of God’s story line, but they are prototypes for the end. The second Adam has come, and a second Eden is assured. So as you read the rest of this book—whenever, in fact, you consider the end of time at all—remember the beginning of the story. Remember Eden, because Eden is coming back. 94
