WHAT IS “THE R APTUREâ€?? Someday, Jesus will return and his people will be caught up to meet him in the air. On this point, everyone who trusts the teachings of Scripture finds common ground. This is precisely what the apostle Paul predicted in his letter to the Thessalonians: “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord foreverâ€? (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). This event is known as “the rapture.â€? The word “raptureâ€? does not appear in most English translations of the New Testament. Still, “raptureâ€? is a thoroughly biblical term. In Latin translations of 1 Thessalonians 4:17, the term rendered “caught upâ€? or “taken 0XUDOIURP9RURQHĹ?0RQDVWHU\5RPDQLD
up in English versions is the verb rapiemur, from the noun raptus. The word “rapture simply comes from Paul’s own words in the Latin Bible and means “being caught up. 304
