And what was the Massachusetts pastor’s name? It was Jonathan Edwards. Jonathan Edwards understood the Great Awakening revivals as God’s preparation of his people for the millennial kingdom. “God seems now to be hastily gathering in his elect from all parts of the land,” Edwards declared in his famous evangelistic sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Edwards eagerly anticipated the “future promised advancement of the kingdom of Christ” during Jonathan Edwards, engraved by R Babson & J Andrews, 1855. the millennium as an event unspeakably happy and glorious. ... It is represented as a time of vast increase of knowledge and understanding, ... a time wherein religion and true Christianity shall in every respect be uppermost, ... a time wherein vital piety shall take possession of thrones and palaces, and those that are in most exalted stations shall be eminent in holiness, ... a time of wonderful union ... wherein the nations shall beat their swords into plowshares ... and God will cause, wars to cease to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 2; 32–33) ... a time wherein all heresies and false doctrines shall be exploded, and the church of God shall not be rent with a variety of jarring opinions, ... a time wherein the whole earth shall be united as one holy city, one heavenly family.155 Scriptures that may point to postmillennialism Genesis 22:17

God promised Abraham that his seed would “possess the gate” or take control of God’s enemies; those who trust in Jesus are the true seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:29). According to many postmillennialists, this text promises that the church will someday have dominion over all the nations of the earth.

Isaiah 2:2–4

Isaiah prophesied that, in the latter days, all nations would come to the mountain of the LORD. According to Hebrews 12:22, the church has become this mountain. During the millennial kingdom, all nations will learn justice and peace through the church.

Matthew 13:31–33

The kingdom will expand slowly and imperceptibly—like a plant or like yeast—until it fills the whole world.

Romans 11:26–27

Before the end of time, all ethnic Israelites will come to faith in Jesus as their Messiah. 297
