JD HEAD OFFICE DESIGN BREAKOUT AREA

Whilst working at JD Sports Fashion PLC I have been tasked with the head office redesign, part of that project included producing a design for a new breakout area for the design studio. The existing office has limited collaborative spaces for the designers to use in an informal and accessible way, therefore the office redesign required various break out areas to accommodate this way of working. The timber structure of the break out area design is positioned in the centre of the office space with open plan and free flowing accessibility. The glass panels allow for a semi-private and quiet area whilst the thick timber panels are spaced apart to allow vision and inclusivity to the rest of the surrounding office space. The overall design of the office feature aims to improve the collaborative opportunities between the designers in the JD Property Design Team, whilst delivering a comfortable and functional workspace away from a computer screen and desk.

JD OFFICE REDESIGN

The Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is a visitor attraction near the village of Abbotsbury, Dorset, originating in 1765, the gardens have been made popular by tourists as well as local sightseers. Within the site there is a colonial themed restaurant where visitors can enjoy afternoon tea along with other lunch menu options. After visiting the restaurant a number of times, I feel that the overall design and feel of the space doesn’t reflect that of the gardens, or the expectations of the customer.

EXISTING SITE

For the redesign I kept the subtropical theme and brought that in to the restaurant, to give the interior a seamless transition from the gardens, which I feel is integral for the customer experience. Replacing the basic polished timber furniture and over the counter service, I have designed a sophisticated and luxurious space with plush furnishings and brightly coloured surfaces. This is achieved with wallpapers, fabrics and the use of indoor tropical plants. I feel that the redesign will encourage more customers to have an enjoyable experience in the restaurant along with that of the subtropical gardens tour.

CONCEPT The inspiration for the Kings Road store reflects the history of the location and its connection to fashion and pop culture, connecting the modern day Kings Road with the historic Swinging Sixties era of models, mini skirts and liberation. The Mod subculture thrived in this area of London and the Ted Baker store relives the days of its fashion exploration and social freedom of that time, with inspired prints, fabrics and overall style. Original mid century furniture, lighting and music has been used to set the tone of the interior creating a playful and quirky design fusion of past and present, and the retail theatre that Ted loves.

RETAIL DESIGN EXPERIENCE - TED BAKER LONDON CONCEPT STORE

CASH DESK & FITTING ROOMS

DESIGN FEATURE Ted Baker stores are known for the unique and innovative design qualities within each store, bespoke fixtures and fittings are key features of every space and reflect the design concept throughout. For the Kings Road store a key design feature is the cash desk, inspired by the Mod style and trends, I have used a 1960’s Mini Cooper – an iconic and strong piece of British design, as the core of the unit. The design features the front of the car with a frame built around to support glass panels that form the top and sides, with a built in digital cash register in the centre.

The only time I feel alright is by your side

FIXTURES & FITTINGS The fixtures and fittings in the Kings Road Ted store are each bespoke and specifically designed for the store and brand. The focus of functionality and flexibility in conjunction with a simplistic and luxurious feel, helped to develop each unique display. The fixtures are designed to be able to dislay various types of apparel, of various shapes, weight and length. This ensures that for any gender or season all products can be managed effectively and displayed beautifully, to reflect the standard and expectation of the Ted Baker brand. The displays can be rearranged and reassembled easily and effectively to dictate the layout and space planning of the store when required.

The Good Source is a pop-up exhibition designed to promote the education and practice of sustainable and ethical sourcing of food and other resources, in conjunction with the interest of animal welfare and fair trade. The practice of ethical consumption and the consideration of where the products we buy are sourced is an important factor for understanding the way we consume and preserve our resources. Ethical sourcing focuses on conducting sourcing activities at the highest possible standards of responsible, sustainable and socially aware business practice.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT - ETHICAL SOURCING EXHIBTION

SITE & LOCATION This exhibition is designed to travel around the UK and be presented in various ethically motivated stores to target consumers in an accessible and impactful way. The introductory location for The Good Source is the Marks & Spencer eco store in Newcastle’s city centre on the main high street. M&S is a trusted and valuable British brand well known for their strong ethical policies and active ‘Plan A’ scheme. ‘Plan A’ is M&S’ way of taking responsibility and encouraging their customers to make wiser choices and protect the planet, by sourcing responsibly, reducing waste, helping communities around the world with various projects and their major goal to be the worlds most sustainable retailer. M&S is the perfect brand to endorse The Good Source exhibition to ensure wide spread interest and a substantial impact with British consumers. MARKS & SPENCER NEWCASTLE

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT & PLANNING The design concept for the food sourcing exhibition is inspired by organic forms and core geometry, the idea of a central focus/destination within the layout and structure of the space. The curved spatial design has been influenced by the natural contours of tree bark. Models - The models I have made represent the building in connection with the site and location as well as the internal spatial planning in connection to the existing structure of the building.

SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN The leading focus of the exhibition design has been created based on the idea of movability. The exhibition will exist in each location for 3 months at a time, meaning the importance of the design is ensuring it can be tailored to function within various spaces, and can be dismantled/reassembled repeatedly and successfully. The concept of collapsibility has been considered through out the design process for all individual units as well as the exhibition as a whole. All materials and finishes used to produce The Good Source exhibition have been selected with sustainable and ethical intention, many of the ecological materials used have recyclable, decomposable or eco-friendly qualities and carry approved environmental ratings. This is important for the integrity of the project in connection with the overall objective of the exhibition.

‘FAST TRACK’ EXHIBITION & INFORMATION POINT

This project was a live brief set by Guy Smith of Arcadia Group to design a Topshop Topman store in Los Angeles, California. For this I worked closely with David Dalziel of Dalziel & Pow on concept and planning development. The site was a large open area within an outdoor mall complex in LA, the challenge was to make this British born brand appealing and successful to a new market. This project was heavily driven by the dual concept of Op art imagery and iconic influences. The layout of the space was strongly influenced by repeat patterns, bold lines and mononchrome colour, which is present within the spacing and structure of all permenant and changable fixtures, fittings and displays. The store has been designed to take the customer on a journey through time with fashion, inspiring and encouraging them to be bold with their own unique and iconic style as well as taking note from the icons of the past, present and future. This is acheived through the feature of a timeline displayed graphically throughout the store which helped to bring the design to life and gave a unique edge to the brand in a new location for a fresh audience, whilst keeping the established Topshop design.

COLLABORATIVE WORKSPACE

This project is was a brief written in collaboration with Gensler. The brief was to design a cool office space for a chosen digital brand incorporated in to the existing Toffee Factory site in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The aim of the brief was to have a clear conceptual design with strong focus on material and furniture specifications to create an interesting and functional work environment. I focused on the fashion app/website Lyst and used the concept of the grid system to aid and develop my overall design, this is communicated in the surface, material and structural deaign as well as the layout and planning of the space. An extra challenge with this project was that it was a 30 day brief, a much tighter deadline for such a large project, the overall outcome was a cool, functional and exciting office space for the digital company Lyst within the Toffee Factory building.
