As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain skills. Apprentices also receive valuable training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. The minimum salary is ÂŁ2.50 per hour, however, many apprentices earn significantly more. There may be different entry requirements depending on the Apprenticeships and the industry sectors. Competition for places can be fierce so you will need to show you are committed.

Qualifications are below level 2 which is the equivalent to 5 GCSE’s A-C grades. The Young Retail Programme is a pre Apprenticeship work experience programme for young people aged 16 -18 yrs run by The Walwyn Trust. The programme is being run across the south and has funding for an initial 6 months starting in June 2011. The programme lasts up to 6 months and you will be required to work 16hrs a week in a retail or customer service placement (which the Walwyn Trust will help find for you). In return you will: • Receive £40 per week expenses • Work towards achieving an NVQ 2 in Customer Services • Work towards Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy (if appropriate) The aim of the programme is to enhance your employability skills by providing you with an opportunity to: • Undertake meaningful work experience • Gain a recent employer reference • Work towards an NVQ Customer Service qualification • Improve numeracy and literacy qualification

WHO ARE WE? City Early Years and Childcare (CEYC) is part of the Children and Families Service at Brighton & Hove City Council. We are the Local Authority department that supports childcare providers across the voluntary, private and maintained sectors. We provide a free training programme for people working or volunteering in childcare settings. We give up to date information about qualifications and career development and we support new people into the sector. The Family Information Service (FIS) is a free, impartial service, also part of the CEYC who gives detailed information and advice on childcare as well as general information on a wide range of services for children. Anyone looking for work in childcare or thinking about moving into a career in early years and childcare can call the helpline for advice and guidance.

The support we offer includes:

FREE Childcare Taster session - Tuesday 14th June (7pm-9pm)

These courses are for 18+ year olds. Discover the different job opportunities, the qualification route into childcare and local training opportunities available and decide if it' s the right career move for you.
