Common heather drapes the mountainside in purple surrounding the old cart trails. This is where the Glomma river sets off on her long journey. And also, where we embarked on ours – in the old mining town of Røros.

It all began 80 years ago with home-based weaving classes. Since then we have come a long way, but our core has never changed. Nor has our passion. Here in the town of Røros, we produce the world’s most beautiful throws. Since 1953 we have employed machine production, but our weaving traditions are hundreds of years old. Our cold mountain climate has made wool an essential part of our lives. Røros’ soul is in our traditional craftmanship – knitted socks, homespun cloth and a warm wool sweater. Our wool has kept us warm – and it has kept us together. In the 70s, we crafted fabrics for national costumes, wool curtains and upholstery fabrics. We still do some of that today and we will always remain true to our craftsmanship roots. But the 90s introduced us to new possibilities. Modern technology and a new range of machinery enabled us to think outside the box. We wanted to make products that could be experienced. That achieved more than keeping you warm. That could be enjoyed and put on display. And so began our focus on throws – inspired by Trønderlag’s aesthetic beauty, Røros’ magical mountains and forest-clad valleys. All made with pure, Norwegian wool. And here we are today. With a passion for craftsmanship – and an eye for design.

Kvam The Kvam series is characterized by its playful geometry, which is based on the possibilities and limitations of jacquard weave. The motif clearly relates to the weave’s horizontal and vertical directions, while the diagonal lines create rhythm and dynamics. The pattern can be associated with both Norwegian and Japanese motifs.

Krsitne Five Melvær Product name

Kristine Five Melvær is an Oslo-based designer working with tableware, lighting, furniture, textile and graphic design. Melvær explores the subject of object communication, bridging the disciplines of product design and graphic design. Focusing on the communicative potentials of objects as a means to create emotional bonds between object and user. By searching for the sensual essence of phenomena, she translates these qualities into sensuous objects with a Scandinavian simplicity. Her first throws came to be known as the Mikkel series and the Naturpledd. Melvær sourced her inspiration for the Mikkel series from the Bauhaus design school’s sharp, geometric shapes and rich colour palettes. For the Naturpledd series, she sought inspiration from nature and based her designs on using non-dyed yarn and the natural grey colour tones of sheep. She later went on to design the Åsmund, Melvin and Portør series, as well as the colour palette used for Stemor, as a natural extension of her initial designs.

“Lynild is Norwegian for «fire stitch» – a textile pattern that reaches all the way back to medieval times.”

Anderssen & Voll works within various fields of design with a focus on domestic objects. The studio was founded by the talented duo Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll, two of Norway’s most lauded designers. They have in recent years created numerous designs for Røros Tweed, and this autumn we are proud to add another beautiful series by the talented duo to our collection. Through a close collaboration over many years we have together gained great insight and broaden our vision of what is possible when it comes to creating new and lasting designs. Anderssen & Voll’s dedication and enthusiasm to the field of both design and weaving is indispensable in our design and weaving process.

New shades of Lynild

The Lynild series was first launched in 2012 and this year we wanted to add new colours to an old favourite. When first launching the series the inspiration for the colour palette was from racing and sportswear. This time the designers Anderssen & Voll had a more toned down approach to the colour setting, resulting in the two new colour versions, sage green and sky blue.

Anderssen & Voll

Lynild is Norwegian for «fire stitch» – a textile pattern that reaches all the way back to medieval times. Anderssen & Voll is reviving this traditional pattern with vibrant gradients in a pattern inspired by mountain landscapes.

Other collaborations Our vision is not just to produce high quality throws, but also create designs that lasts and could be passed on from generation to generation. Designing products that not only keeps you warm, but that is esthetically pleasing is key to us. So is working with some of the most passionate and talented designers in the industry. We strive to always challenge our thinking and to create new and exciting collaborations built on passion for sustainable materials, modern technology and craftmanship. This has led us to working with a range of different designers that are now an important part of our story. INGA SEMPÉ The French designer Inga Sempé creates visual poetry. She is well-known around the world for being a designer with extraordinary sensibility. She has done remarkable works in furniture, lighting, objects and textiles for many renown brands. Sempé was awarded the Grand Prix de la Création en design de la Ville de Paris in 2003. Her two first works for Røros Tweed is the throws and cushions Agnes and Bernadette. RUNA KLOCK Klock holds a master’s degree in design from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She has a playful and curious approach in her designs. Her work is often inspired by nature and the natural beauty of different materials with a graphic touch

are typical elements for her design. Klocks’ work is characterized by an openness to cooperate with people in various disciplines; her practice extends beyond product design to include food, exhibitions and entrepreneurship. Several of her projects have a strong social profile. Filos, Klocks design for Røros Tweed, is a soft and light throw. The throw comes in six different colours, all woven on the same striped warp. The pattern is inspired by the tartan seen in Scottish kilts. The colour blends that occur in the squares where the woven threads intersect, are harmonious and warm, and go from light to dark. This way you can choose your own expression, depending on how you fold the throw. HALLGEIR HOMSTVEDT Hallgeir Homstvedt holds a BA of Industrial Design and honours from Newcastle University in Australia. Working in fields of furniture, interior and product design, Homstvedt makes products that are tactile, interactive and engages the observer’s curiosity. For Røros Tweed he has designed Bislett, a series consisting of three throws in a soft and beautiful colour palette. Inspiration for this collection comes from the Moiré phenomenon, a visual effect that occurs when two repeating patterns are layered on top of each other, creating the illusion of movement.

SNØHETTA Snøhetta Design is an award-winning, multidisciplinary graphic design and branding agency incorporated within the Snøhetta architect offices in Oslo and New York. All of their projects are based on strong and sustainable concepts. Snøhettas’ method is based on collaboration with multiple professions working together to explore differing approaches to each project. Snøhetta has designed several throws for Røros Tweed, among them Color Noise, which is still a favourite in the collection. “A field of soft lines with mud make their own way to the deep background, a seamless transition from glow to colour, from noise to silence” is how Snøhetta describes this beautiful throw.

Other collaborations

ARNE & CARLOS The design duo Arne & Carlos has been highly successful in Norway and on the international scene with their knitwear collections. Their work has been inspired by traditional patterns under the guise of contemporary design expressions. The Nordland, Setesdal and Voss designs are inspired by Rauma Garn’s old knitting patterns that were designed for Husfliden bearing the same names, with an unmistakable reference to Røros Tweed’s strong ties with Norway’s cultural heritage and arts and crafts traditions.

exhibition “A house to die in” at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. For the exhibition Røros Tweed was engaged to weave a 500m2 large floor carpet. Røros Tweed’s contribution to the exhibition inspired Bjarne Melgaard to further collaboration. BENGT LINDBERG A designer and illustrator that creates new design with roots in traditional Swedish folk art. His designs can be both playful and strictly graphic. In 1991 he made his first iconic elk, which has become a modern Swedish souvenir. Lindberg from an early age was inspired by his grandparents’ farm in Skåne, filled with objects of art, handicrafts and nick-nacks. His designs reflect his weakness for the old and slightly naive and clumsy folk art. Lindberg describes his inspiration for the throw Elk “A late summer evening, It pops up in front of me in the woods. Largest among the animals. A twig is broken and the animal stops, tips her ears, then quickly retreated to the protective dimness of the forest. A part of my childhood and the first small pieces of what would become a graphic pattern – an elk”.

ELLE MELLE A graphic design studio based in Ålesund that has received the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council. They have collaborated closely with us since 2010 and because of their many years of working with Røros Tweed’s profile we wanted them to design our profile throw, Arv. The inspiration for the throw is drawn from Norwegian hand-weaving traditions – a cultural heritage with deep historical roots.

MARGUN UNDERHAUG The talented Margun Underhaug is an educated textile designer from Bergen Kunsthåndverkskole and has an additional degree in pedagogy, marketing and sociology. For 20 years she worked as a designer and product developer, before starting her own design company. In recent years, she has been teaching arts and craft in various schools. The throw Kristin is inspired by the movie and the novel about Kristin Lavransdatter. Her second design for Røros Tweed was the Isbjørn. The polar bear has become a symbol of the Arctic and Nordic. It has gained much attention in recent years because the population is threatened by global warming.

BJARNE MELGAARD Bjarne Melgaard is one of Norway’s foremost and internationally renowned contemporary artists. He has held more than 45 individual exhibitions at leading galleries around the world. He is also a frequent curator, author and producer, having written more than a dozen novels and produced several films. Our Norwegian wool

58

Since 1940 Røros Tweed has produced high-quality wool products, based on centuries-old local craft traditions. All of our products are made of Norwegian wool and are entirely produced in Norway from raw wool to finished product.

In Norway there is a long and proud tradition of breeding sheep, to harvest their wool and to handle it as a valuable resource. Since 1927 Rauma Ullvarefabrikk, the owners of Røros Tweed, has refined this raw material in accordance with the strict quality standards that characterize Norwegian handicraft tradition. Norwegian wool is sorted into 16 different classes and how the wool is handled and sorted is crucial for its value. Through our close cooperation with Norilia, the Norwegian association for wool, we receive the finest Norwegian lambswool. Our wool is characterized by exceeding resilience and elasticity with an ideal combination of comfort and usability.

Our Norwegian wool

Norwegian wool meets the criteria for Cradle to Cradle – for good animal welfare, low energy consumption, proper resources and little use of chemicals. In 2015 Norilia was the first wool producer awarded with the Svane certification, the official Nordic ecolabel. Making the process even more sustainable Norilia’s wool washing supplier has developed a process where 96% of the water is cleaned and reused.
