Roaming Roosters is fast becoming a locally recognised brand and with the opening of a new farm shop and bistro, we thought it’s high time we learned a little more about the ambitious Mellin brothers championing their ‘rooster roots’ right here in Pendle. On the face of it, Simon, 26, and Nick, 23, are a couple of likely farm lads but there’s no denying there’s a whole lot more to this budding business duo and their recent venture; the Roaming Roosters Farm Shop and The Olde Spot Bistro, based at their farm site in Higham, is testament to their ambition, drive and true commitment to the local area. The brothers farming roots stretch back a century and span three generations, beginning with Grandad Joseph and their father Geoff who together opened a butchers’ shop in Nelson. Simon said: “We were always in the shop; it was like our second home. We began to help at a young age; both beginning to wield a knife from just age six!” As they grew, so did their input and Simon and Nick’s roles in the business extended to serving customers and boning meat at weekends and school holidays. At a young age, both had developed a good understanding of the processes involved in the retail food industry and Nick went on to become a butcher himself. Simon however, fascinated with fast cars, flew the nest to travel the world as a motorsport race engineer. This gave him some big, ‘chicken shaped’ ideas. Missing his roots, Simon came back to the fold joining his dad and Nick in the butchers’ shop and noticing a demand for free range chickens, Roaming Roosters was born! Simon and Nick began farming their signature Roaming Roosters and sold them through the shop and local farmers markets. Nick added: “The success of our venture gave us the confidence to expand the Roaming Roosters brand.

We created a website in order to retail nationally and added free range pork, lamb and beef to the range, sourcing meats from local farmers who share our traditional methods and farming passion.” With business thriving and a real buzz around the accessibility to sustainable food, now begins the next chapter in this feathery tale and we can expect much more from this dynamic Rooster duo yet!
