ABOUT I am a 23-year-old design student, originally from Jyväskylä. Four years ago, I decided to apply to study design, and I believe it was the best decision I have made in my life. During my studies, a whole new world has opened up to me, and it’s been like a ride through Wonderland. I have found my passion. I enjoy challenging myself, and want to strive for an open attitude toward design. During my final year in Lahti Institute of Design, my goal is to learn as much as I possibly can. I’m particularly interested in public & commercial spaces. My exchange semester in The Netherlands gave me new perspective in my professional studies. I had an opportunity to improve my own design processes and strengthen my identity as a designer. I learned lots, especially about conceptual design. Due to the strong passion I feel towards my work, I see myself as having a lot to give as a designer. Being the daughter of two entrepreneurs, I have always been driven by a genetic ambition and an endless thirst for knowledge. A designer can never be fully ready, but instead must always be prepared to learn even more and improve. I definitely am.
DESIGN PROJECTS BY ROOSA RISKI 2010 - 2013
All photos are taken by me, unless otherwise stated
HARBOUR HOTEL Hotel entrance
Harbour hotel is a study of spatial forms and elements. The aim was to create a fresh and modern marine-inspired hotel lobby, which contains both spacious and intimate areas.
KITCHEN User-centered design
This kitchen was my first interior design assignment. It is designed for a Finnish family of four. User-centricity was highly emphasised in the design process. The visualisation is made with a scale model and Photoshop.
FLOU Metal workshop
The metal workshop brief was to design & manufacture a functional product out of steel rods. The idea of Flou is that it suits shoes of different heights. Photos by Antti Sepponen
KAINO Wooden chair
Kaino is designed to be easily adaptable. The aim of the design was to create a functional product & to keep the manufacturing process simple. Prototype made by Toni Forsvik
OLLIE-POP Trash design project
Ollie-Pop is made of used skateboard decks & steel rods. Pro-skaters may throw away up to 10 decks a year, so there are plenty of abandoned ones waiting for new use. Every stool is one-of-a-kind, due to the countless combinations of different colors, shapes and illustrations. Ollie-Pop is already being sold by re-sellers. Designed in co-operation with Sanna Ritvanen, Gea Karja & Esa Naukkarinen Photos by me, Sanna Ritvanen & Unto Rautio

Passive house / Housing Fair, Tampere 2012
Energy efficiency & sustainable design were emphasised during all phases of the design process of Halm. Special attention was placed on the location of the building, the cubic efficiency, and the insulation. It is designed for a family of four with two teenaged children. The house is insulated with straw bales. It is easily adjustable into a zero-energy house with the use of solar panels. Exhibited at the Housing Fair Tampere 2012 Designed in co-operation with Esa Naukkarinen & Janni Vuori
Lahti information point
Lahti Travel & the Environmental Helpdesk of Lahti gave us the assignment to design their new info point located in the centre of the city. The new premises are only 33,5m², but should still have space for a workstation for 2 full-time employees and 1-2 trainees. Designed in co-operation with Tinja Sarkanen, Janni Vuori & Essi Kantonen
WARD 4 Healthcare centre corridor
The assignment was to design the interior for a 3 meter wide corridor of a healthcare center, with a repeatable furniture solution.
Office corridor of an IT company
The assignment was to design the interior for a 3 meter wide corridor of an office, with a repeatable, modular solution.
Hotel room concept / Habitare -fair 2012
Kolo is an atmospheric hotel room, which is predominated by the integrated bed. All important functions are connected to the bed. Everything is made from recycled materials. The wood is waste lumber, and the metal parts of the clothes rack are scrap metal. The material used in the braids is made up of discarded curtains and sheets, and foam rubber clippings. Exhibited at the Habitare Design Fair 2012, Helsinki Designed & built in co-operation with Sanna Ritvanen, Esa Naukkarinen & Hanna Heikkinen Photos by Esa Naukkarinen & Hanna Heikkinen
DUNE ILLUSIONS Urban design / The Netherlands
Schevenigseweg is a road between the center of the Hague and the Scheveningen beach. It is a more than 2km long straight road, so it is boring to walk along. My goal was to design something that would make the road more attractive & light it during dark hours. I was inspired by the surrounding dunes and researched their shape a lot. The final object is a combination of road dunes with optical illusions and side dunes with 3D effect & light.
DIY THUMB PIANOS
Conceptual Object Design / The Netherlands
The assignment was to design and produce a musical instrument. I was inspired by traditional African thumb pianos, and in my research, I discovered there are hundreds of ways to build them. I decided to experiment with the parts that are needed when building a thumb piano, and create Do It Yourself -instruments. The idea was that all the parts for one instrument can be found in one store. The examples are from Albert Heijn (The Netherlands’largest grocery company), 070WATT (a recycling company) & Gamma (a hardware store). https://vimeo.com/77800643
SAJOS FLAG Graphic Design / The Netherlands
Sajos is the Cultural Centre of the indigenous Finno-Ugric Sรกmi people located in Inari, Finland. I designed a flag for the building and wanted it to communicate that Sajos is a home of Sรกmi culture. The flag is inspired by the symbol of the traditional Sรกmi home, kota. The final flag has a Sรกmi flag inside a kota-inspired shape. The emphasis of this assignment was on the process, so I also designed a flyer to show how the design process proceeded.
