Process of making galvanized nails Most nails in the market are made of either iron, aluminium, steel or copper. These nails vary in prices due to the type of metal used in making them. The reason behind this is that these metals have different qualities that make them have different market values. Some are proven to be better than others while some work more or less the same. When buying nails, it is important to know the material used to make them. This is an important thing to know in order to decide if the ones chosen will satisfy the work for which they have been chosen for. Nails suitable for flooring are not necessarily appropriate to use for roofing. Here our main focus is on galvanized nails. These nails are just like any other nails. The only difference is that they have been put through a chemical process called galvanization. In this process, these nails are covered with zinc metal which forms a kind of coating that ‘protects’ the nails. It is protective in the sense that the zinc coating keeps the actual nail from chemical changes such as rusting. Additionally, in case the galvanized nails are in an unfriendly environment, say like in an acid that dissolves the mother metal, the coating will be the one to get dissolved before the real nail does. The process through which these nails are made uses a chemical reaction that is known as electroplating. An electric current is used to transfer metal ions of zinc from the zinc plate used onto the nails being galvanized. This chemical process that takes place is also referred as oxidation in some cases. The zinc layer that is formed on the nail is a very uniform layer so that the nail maintains a smooth surface and appearance. However while making galvanized nails using electroplating method, the layer that is formed on the nail is usually thin. This results in the nails not being as resistant to actions like rusting as one would want them to be. Galvanized nails made through electroplating are best not used in environments with high salt water content, for example in the humidity. For the reason above, there are other formulated procedure by which galvanized nails can be made. Such nails are made through a process called the hot dipped process. The advantage of this process as opposed to using electroplating is that it results in a thicker layer of zinc forming on the nails, in turn making them more resistant to corrosive effects and such. These galvanized nails can therefore be used in places where rusting is a big issue as well as in places which has the presence of salt water which causes a corrosive effect on most metals. Knowing the kind of job one wants to do using nails is a very important factor in helping them decide on the kind of nails to use.
