A Word From Ron... Hello, Guide to Golf readers! By the time you read this, we will be close to Easter and the snowbirds will be loading up their cars on carriers and heading for another day of golf up north. It’s time for the locals to take back their fairways and greens, clubhouses, restaurants, bars and roads. That means reciprocal time, golf pass time and lots of great-priced golf in Southwest Florida. Life is good for the year-round golfer here in our world. I recently came across some musings from a man who was famously named “The Royal Hacker”. The “Hacker” lived up in Vermont and his claim to fame was that he wrote about golf, but never quite got past the 3-digit score. Yes, that would be 100+. The “Hacker” had some pretty interesting theories in his day…kind of like the ying and yang of golf philosophy. For instance, he said if your opponent says “there’s water on the right”, the odds were about 1000 to 1 you would hit that water on your upcoming shot. Or, if your opponent would say “those trees aren’t that high”, you know the next shot would be dead center in the trees. You’re opponent saying “don’t go right here” was an absolute guarantee that the slice you did not hit all day would come into play on the very next shot. That shot would take an absolute righthand turn into a condo window on the right of the tee. Yes, the Hacker never broke a hundred and looking at his philosophy, I’m sure you understand why. The power of positive thinking had somehow become just the reverse for this poor desperate would-be golfer. He never had the chance to meet Bob Rotella, world-renowned sports psych

4

guru, or Dr. Shannon Reece, our own local sports psychologist who graces our pages in each issue. The Hacker didn’t take a lesson from one of our many local pro’s to learn the value of envisioning your shot every time. He remained true to his moniker “The Royal Hacker” until the very end. Those of us who live here and don’t want to play like the Hacker probably should look up Dr. Reece or one of our many top notch pro’s that you’ll find in our magazine. That old theory of “golf is a humbling game” will always hold true, whether a 2 handicap or a 30 handicap. As amateur golfers, we don’t need to add to that humbling part by bringing those negative thoughts to the course. Check out the article Dr. Reece provided for us in this magazine. She can bring out the best in your game. Do you wish your approach shot to the green was a little easier? Would you like to hit an iron on to the green instead of a longer club? Want to play faster and have more fun? Go ahead, move it up to the next tee. “Play it forward” and have a great time. Golf is nothing more than a 4-hour walk in the park with a stick and a ball. Relax, enjoy your walk, and you will play a lot better. Please keep the game of golf moving and enjoyable for everyone. It’s a great time to play golf in Southwest Florida, so get out there and make a few birdies and pars. Until the next issue, keep up with the group in front you, fill those divots, fix those ball marks and play well. Captain Ron

What’s The Difference Between Bundled Golf and Golf

Equity?

by Heather Wightman, REALTOR® With over 150 golf courses, Southwest Florida is easily the golf capital of the world, as it is so fittingly referred to. Public, semi-private and private courses can be found all along the Paradise coast with a myriad of layouts and costs. In Southwest Florida, there are two types of golf memberships in the area: bundled golf and golf Equity. Many of these gated communities are built around the golf lifestyle, offering luxurious resort and golf-amenity living. Estate and coach homes, villas and condos are built with golf course views and offer a variety of ways to become a member or play the golf

course. Golf Equity means that there is golf available with the purchase of a membership. Bundled Golf means that every home owner in the community automatically becomes a member of the golf club. Communities such as the Collier’s Reserve, Grey Oaks, Eagle Creek, Bonita Bay, The Colony at Pelican Landing, Grandezza, Twin Eagles, Talis Park, Mediterra, Quail West, The Brooks, West Bay, Vasari, Wildcat Run, Crown Colony, Fiddlesticks, Bay Beach and Gateway are just some of the golf course communities available in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers Beach and Fort Myers.

Golf Equity means that there is golf available with the purchase of a membership. Bundled Golf means that every home owner in the community automatically becomes a member of the golf club.

The Treasuremyhome.com Real Estate Team, with Elite Realty of Southwest Florida, has over 20 years of real estate experience locally and nationally. The Team specializes in delivering the perfect golf lifestyle for clients within high-end golf communities in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers Beach and Fort Myers. For visitors

to Talis Park Golf Club in North Naples, the sense of anticipation as the arched entry gate opens is palpable. Once inside, the eyes are mesmerized by a breathtaking tableau. Tall trees line an exquisitely landscaped boulevard that winds past orchards, gardens and the glittering lakes and emerald-toned Sea Dwarf® Paspalum fairways and greens of one of just two Greg Norman-Pete Dye designed courses in the world. Acknowledged for its physical beauty and exceptional playability, the Talis Park course is a local legend and regarded as one of the nation’s premier golf experiences.

The Talis Park course is challenging yet extremely playable thanks to the Paspalum turf, wide fairways and a layout that typically provides left and right escape routes on second and third shots.

“The golf experience at Talis Park is, above all else, about the Paspalum turf,” said Dave Witt, Director of Golf at the Talis Park Golf Club. “The course includes 133 acres of manicured turf. Everything, the tees, fairways, roughs and greens, is 100% Paspalum mowed to different heights. Our Golf Course Superintendent, Kevin Shields, understands the turf, and maintains the course in a way that is remarkable. The entire course is greener than green. Other clubs send their staff here to speak with Kevin to find out how he does it. It is truly one of the most beautiful courses I’ve seen.” Pete Dye agrees with that assessment. After touring his creation, Dye acknowledged the meticulous care the course receives by remarking, “I haven’t seen a golf course like this anyplace in the world in as good of shape and condition as this one. Ever. I mean anyplace. Really. And I’ve see a few.”

The Talis Park Golf Club features one of just two Greg Norman-Pete Dye designed golf courses in the world.

The turf allows the ball to sit on top of the grass rather than down in it even in the rough. Average golfers can enjoy a round that is more about shot execution than coping with less desirable lies they cannot control. Like the best of courses, Talis Park rewards good shots and errant shots have consequences. “Dye did all of the green and bunker work,” said Talis Park Golf Club General Manager Butch Stewart. “Norman focused on the routing of the course and the placement of the fairway bunkers. Dye typically designs very tough courses. We wanted Talis Park to work as a residential course as well as a course for tournament play, such as a pro-am and a collegiate tournament we hosted this spring. That’s the course we got - challenging, playable, fair, rewards good shots, penalizes bad shots, five sets of tees that allow 14

golfers to enjoy their game. That’s what golfers love about the course. Obviously, they love playing on the Paspalum turf. Most golfers cannot appreciate how remarkable the turf is until they play on it for the first time.” The Talis Park course measures 7,025 yards from the championship tees. A picturesque landscape allows for uphill and downhill holes while providing images of a course set in the valleys of Tuscany, Italy. In the tradition of older designs like the Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia, high-backed bunkers guard the greens, allowing the long hitter to think twice about club selection. The front nine resembles open and rolling parkland with scattered trees and ends with a descending par 4 to a peninsula green. The back nine is representative of Italy’s rural farmland, providing a strong contrast to the earlier park-like holes.

“Talis Park is about old fashioned grace wrapped in a New Fashioned lifestyle,” said Stewart. “The golf experience begins the moment someone enters the gate. Dave, Kevin, our Food & Beverage Director, Ana Peterson, and Membership Director, Nancy Muschong, understand this is a very special place reserved for a select group of members. The service component is as important as the quality of the course. We make it our business to know the personal preferences of our members and to anticipate their needs. It is a total club experience that is as unique as our members.”

The Talis Park golf course winds through eight neighborhoods that offer the possibility of living in a park-like setting surrounded by nature preserves and sparkling lakes, or in a maintenance-free environment within walking distance of the community’s Grand Piazza. This “In the Park” or “In the Village” approach reflects Kitson’s commitment to creating a community where every aspect of country club living is relevant to the residents’ daily lives and rituals.

The “In the Village” residences in Il Corso, The Watercourse at Talis Park, offer fresh designs that combine the comfort and character of a single-family home with a vibrant village ambience.

15

Crafted by Southwest Florida’s finest custom homebuilders, Talis Park’s neighborhoods present all-new designs in a fresh palette of Spanish Eclectic, Italian Renaissance and Colonial Caribbean architectural styles. Designed to optimize their unique natural surroundings, these homes are tailored to fit the land and the homeowner’s individual sense of style. The result for future owners is a diverse offering of estate homes, villa neighborhoods, and penthouse-style condominiums priced from the mid$600’s into the millions. To learn about the residential opportunities at Talis Park and the Talis Park Golf Club experience, contact the Talis Park Garden House Sales Center at 239-261-6798 or visit TalisPark.com. Talis Park’s Fair Grove neighborhood’s Italian Renaissance designs honor the more traditional view of Naples’ architecture and are joined by a Spanish eclectic style.

Resident Ready homes currently under construction and fully-furnished, designer-decorated models by Sunwest Homes and Fox Custom Builders are available in Talis Park’s Brightling neighborhood.

Build a Pre-shot Routine for Consistency My students often tell me they are looking

for more consistency. This can mean many things in golf; consistent ball flight, impact, balance, putting, scoring and more. In this tip, I would like to address routine. Golfers who develop a repeatable pre-shot routine often find they are more consistent in all the areas I just mentioned. The definition of routine is a usual pattern of activity, something that is unvarying or boringly repetitive. When a golfer can repeat their routine to the point they hardly know they are going through it, they can truly focus on the target and allow their body to make the swing they are capable of making. Staying true to your routine helps keep you focused and relaxed, which also helps combat nerves. Before outlining a basic pre-shot routine, keep in mind that your routine should be unique to you. The tempo should mirror your cadence or bio-rhythm. For example, if you tend to be to the point and typically do most things in life without delay, your routine might be quicker like Nick Price, Dustin Johnson or Lanny Wadkins. If you’re more methodical it might be slower like Keegan Bradley, Greg Norman or Kevin Na. Regardless of your style, the start of your routine through impact should be 20 seconds or less.

6. Check your posture, balance and set the club handle forward, simulating impact. 7. Focus on your swing thought and take a last look at your target. A swing thought might be to finish at your target. 8. Swing without delay…once you’re ready, go! Don’t stand over the ball allowing multiple thoughts to come to mind.

The routine can be as little as 8 steps; 1. From behind the ball, pick a precise target...not a house in the distance, but maybe the chimney on the house.

It doesn’t take long to form your routine. If you stay 2. Save Strokes with an Attitude Tune-Up The winter season is ending, but it’s not too late to significantly improve your game. If your score isn’t as low as you’d like, then you need to consider how your attitude might be holding you back. Thinking poorly (even if only) 20% of the time can have a negative impact on 80% of your performance. When your thoughts and conversations are centered on your struggles, swing glitches and miss hits, you will tend to produce more poor shots, especially under pressure. The top golfers in the world know that in order to give themselves the best opportunity to be successful, they must cultivate a winner’s attitude. That means keeping their thoughts, words, and expectations locked onto their best work, their past successes, and greatest assets in the game — especially when things aren’t working. For the average player, that may seem like an impossible task. Playing with a winner’s attitude isn’t something that just happens. Like mastering your swing, it takes consistent effort to develop and maintain. To play with an attitude that will lead to better and more consistent shots, you must commit to following two strategies that will enable you to maintain better control over your thoughts. #1 - Feed Your Attitude How do you react to a poor shot? Are you focused on what you did well, or what you did wrong? If you’re like most golfers, you try to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. This only serves to reinforce the very thing you wish to avoid repeating, thus feeding your attitude with the wrong information. Instead, you must choose to only identify the value. To develop a winner’s attitude, you have to be more conscious of your assets in order to build on them. Discipline yourself to follow every great and not so great shot with a single question, and contemplate nothing other than — “What did I do right?” Selectively focusing on the things worth repeating, rather than what you wish to avoid doing again, will guide your performance in a positive direction.

a winner’s attitude, and keeps your thoughts centered on delivering the outcomes you desire. You can compete with a bad swing and a great attitude, but you’ll never reach your potential with a great swing and a poor attitude. #2 - Focus Your Attitude Fear of failure can cause you to imagine a poor shot, which will likely produce one. Winners align their thinking with an expectation of success and focus on the factors that are actually relevant to executing good shots, releasing the things that aren’t.

San Carlos Golf Club, located in tropical Fort Myers, Florida, is a semi-private facility which offers year-round golf on a championship 18 hole course. Nestled in the community of San Carlos Park, San Carlos Golf Club is one of the oldest established clubs in Southwest Florida. It was developed in 1971 by the San Carlos Park Community and in 1981 was purchased by local area golfers. As a member-owned, semi-private club, there are membership certificates available. Please contact our administrative office for details (239-267-3131 ext. 25).

Located in tropical Fort Myers, Florida

San Carlos Golf Club strives to have the most affordable rates in Southwest Florida throughout the year. This traditional layout has received rave reviews for its playability from professionals and amateurs alike. Practice facilities include an aqua driving range, pitching and chipping area, practice bunker and a large putting green.

A Golf Tip Fom Mike – Putting Problems (Part I)

Having trouble three putting? Are you scared out of your wits over a three foot putt? Are you not scared but just can’t make a putt? The three major components to poor putting are (1) Improperly reading the greens (2) Poor aim/alignment (3) An unsound putting stroke. This article will cover the first component. Improperly reading the greens is a common problem which is usually associated with poor speed control. Slow greens tend to break more and fast greens tend to break less. Summertime grain is an additional green reading factor. In order to combat these problems, a simple exercise is to practice putting before your round. Start off practicing relatively straight 3-5 foot putts to build your confidence. If you are missing these putts, move to a shorter distance until you are consistently making putts. Next, try some 10-12 foot putts breaking both left and right. If you make 50% of these, consider yourself a good putter. Problem putters should be trying to get within a two foot radius of the hole.

Head Golf Professional

Mike Spetsios

Next, try a few 20-25 foot putts to get a true feeling of the speed of the greens. Problem putters should be trying to get within a three foot radius of the hole. Finally, go back to 5 foot length putts and try putting down grain, into the grain, and cross grain. Pay attention to the break of the ball as it approaches the hole, as this is when the grain will be a dominant factor. (For those who are confused about how to read the grain, please consult a PGA professional). Using the feedback from the practice putting , you can now confidently stand over a putt on the golf course and stroke the ball to a line which you have previously seen and felt while practicing. Remember, confidence breeds positive results!

the top 20 golf courses in the State of Florida. Known for its unparalleled physical beauty and exceptional playability, the Talis Park course is a local legend. After touring his creation, Pete Dye acknowledged the meticulous care the course receives by remarking, “I haven’t seen a golf course like this anyplace in the world in as good of shape and condition as this one. Ever. I mean anyplace. Really. And I’ve seen a few.”

Better Shots Start with Better Tempo A Tip From Dave Witt, Director of Golf at the Talis Park Golf Club All good swings and shots start with good tempo. No matter how good or bad your golf swing is you will hit much better shots with good tempo. Over the years research has shown that better shots are achieved by good tempo with a 3 to 1 ratio. The backswing should take 3 times as long as the downswing. By being able to do this the golf club can make the proper transition from the backswing to the downswing. On the downswing make sure you swing through the ball for better contact. 30

Mustang Golf Course

239-793-2223

Lely’s mustang course is a

legend in the making. Designed by Lee Trevino, Mustang Golf Course is a layout that follows his philosophy of making the game challenging – but a fair challenge – for the average golfer. The course offers a variety of golf holes that are difficult to a point, but always fun to play – this is a place where a player can always recover from an errant shot. Named a “Top 50 Resort Course” in Golf World Magazine’s 2009 “Reader’s Choice” awards. Punctuated by 12 sparkling lakes, the Mustang gently flows across undulating fairways and winds through stands of towering Florida pines. Strategically placed bunkers will test your decision-making prowess as well as shotmaking abilities. Come play this most forgiving course – you’ll want to come back and play again and again! Ask us about joining The Classics Country Club at Lely and have access to 54 holes of championship golf year-round! Golf digest gives the Mustang Course 4-1/2 stars!

Improve your game through better Balance is the key to success in a golf swing! Most golfers stand out of balance when address, and when they go to make a golf swing, their body fights the action and ends up looking stiff or rigid. When you are stiff or rigid, you cannot build up the speed for distance or control for consistency, and there’s an early fatigue and even injury in some cases. Making a golfer feel balance is not that difficult. You know you’re out of balance when you cannot hold your finish to the count of three. You know you’re out of balance when you take a step immediately after your golf swing impact position. You know you’re out of balance when, after you hit the ball, you’re walking backwards. Here is a quick way to feel balance.

balance!

to the front of your feet then to the back of your feet, too much to the left and too much to the right, until you find center mass balance. From this point, make a backswing and count to three and see if you can maintain a full backswing in balance. It is advised not to swing forward while standing on the towels without guidance of your coach or instructor. Being able to learn to feel your balance at address and the top of the backswing should increase your awareness of your balance and balance points therefore improving your timing and tempo while improving distance and accuracy. Good luck and have fun, better golf with the golf doctor.

Jack Nicklaus’ dedication and ingenuity

has enhanced hundreds of spectacular courses worldwide. In Lee County, Southwest Florida, however, only Old Corkscrew Golf Club is highlighted by that spectacular designation – Jack Nicklaus ‘Signature Design’. The par-72 championship layout which opened in 2007 meets the highest design criteria. Since OCGC is not part of any real estate development, this course is a “core” or “stand-alone” extraordinary golf experience. The course design has been developed to mesh precisely with the outstanding natural assets – mature oak, pine and cypress trees and a natural flow way through the center of the property... adding up to one spectacular golf course.
