Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour email@example.com
Whew… it’s all a blur now!
Welcome to the other side, 2013 is now a reality. In the immortal words of Ray Wylie Hubbard, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I’d of taken better care of my truck.” 2012 was good to me. Robert Earl Keen, Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines…
I did see a few good shows over the holidays (shocker). We loaded up the van right before Christmas and went into Corpus for the annual Robert Earl Keen Christmas show at Brewster Street. This was my third year in a row to do

Robert Earl Keen played his annual Christmas show at Brewster Street on January 20th. this and I now consider it a tradition. This year was especially great because my old pals Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines opened the show. Just in case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last 15 years or so, you should know that these two guys are a force to be reckoned with. I’m talking about a non-stop regiment of touring, recording, conducting workshops, songwriting, book publishing, free lance writing, record producing and general creativity. I’ve known both Terri and Lloyd for many years and can attest that they are two of the greatest souls you’ll ever meet. I squeezed as close to the front of the stage as I could for this sold-out show and appreciate the touching shout out that Terri gave me. I actually have the distinction of hiring Terri for her first paying gig in the early 90’s when I paid her a whopping $50 to open for Marcia Ball at the old Billy Blues in San Antonio. She’s certainly come a long way and I couldn’t be more proud of her. I’ve known Lloyd back since Lubbock in the 70’s when he played pedal steel with the Joe Ely Band. He’s always been a monster.
The whole evening had a great holiday vibe. There were large groups of friends everywhere who all sang along to every song and swayed to the music with each other. It was fun going with all my friends, Carol, Robby, Kathryn and Brian. It really put us all into the Christmas spirit. The band played for a good three hours and it was easy to see that Keen was really enjoying himself. He had a big smile on the whole time. So did I.
Cody Angel played the Coast Club on Dec. 29th.
Stevie Start… I also caught a couple of cool shows at the Coast Club in Port A. Stevie Start played a solo show on December 22nd. Stevie has recently moved to Padre from New York and has been playing at the Tarpon Ice House, Shorty’s and Scuttlebutt’s. Make it a point to check this guy out, he’s good. He’s one of those musicians that plays everything; guitar, bass, drums and keys. He plays a variety of songs plus his original material is good, too and he’s able Stevie Start played to tackle complicated the Coast Club on songs solo and still make Dec. 22nd. them sound full.
Cody Angel… Our Prodigal son returned… Cody Angel was home from school for the holidays and also played the Coast Club. He had Antone Perez on drums and Art Galvan on bass. I had lunch with Cody while he was in town and we got to catch up. He’s been away studying music at South Plains College in Levelland and is doing really
Making music at the Tarpon Ice House with Dan McLeod, Ronnie Narmour, Dennis Sullivan, Uel Jackson and Stevie Start. well… try a 3.8 grade point on for starters. He played in four ensembles last semester (classic country, rock, funk and swing) plus he’s joined the Matt Wayne Band and has been burning up the miles, playing in Ft. Worth, Stephenville, Coupland, Cleburn… even West Virginia and Ohio. Cody looked great, completely full of life and energy. He absolutely sparkled when talking about all his new experiences. Without a doubt, this kid is going far. BTW, the show at the Coast Club was stellar. Cody, we’ve missed you around here! You keep up the good work.
And that’s the truth!
Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines performed at Brewster Street on Thursday, Dec. 20th. Before Terri and Lloyd took the stage, Robert Earl’s band assembled and played a half dozen instrumental Christmas songs. They dressed in solemn black and played stoically with no banter. All of the instruments were acoustic and it was quite a treat. Rich Brotherton, the guitarist, played all of the melody lines perfectly to such songs as We Three Kings, Little Drummer Boy and What Child Is This. The stage was decorated in Keen’s Merry Christmas From the Family theme. There was a big Christmas tree with huge boxes of Marboro Lights and Tampons. When Robert Earl took the stage, his band had all changed into costumes reflecting their favorite Christmas songs. Keen was one of the three kings, Brotherton was dressed like Bing Crosby, the slide player was dressed like one of the wise men, the bass

player was dressed like Charles Dickens… it was kind of surreal seeing Robert Earl Keen playing with a crown on. You know he put a lot of thought into his costume. He’s been on top for a long time now.
