Ronnie Murray Architect ARB

As the Project Architect in a significant number of developments, my experience lies primarily in private residential, preschool education and commercial office design. Beginning my career at a newly founded practice with two experienced directors has allowed me to be directly involved in a wide range of project sectors and all design stages. Over the past three and half years, I have developed a very comprehensive and pragmatic approach to design, allowing creative freedom come to the fore when faced with project challenges and limitations. Working closely with both client and the design team from an early stage has allowed each individual project to create substantial value for the client and the surrounding community. As an ARB (UK) Qualified Architect, I am eligible for RIBA membership. Having sought advice from the AIBC and CACB, it would be possible to transfer my academic certificates and begin the internship programme with the AIBC. Due to my past experience there 02

is potential for the two year programme to be shortened as The Experience Review Committee will review submissions on a case-by-case basis.

With regard to skill transfer I expect there to be some minor changes from practice in the UK however my varied past experience and ongoing curiosity will reassure an even transition into Canadian practice. +44 (0)75 4785 2734

The following pages are a concise introduction to my involvement in past projects, demonstrating my architectural ability and aspiration. I would be delighted to send you an expanded portfolio to further demonstrate my ability to join your team. I will arrive in Vancouver on 6th June but am happy to conduct initial interviews via phone or video conferencing. My visa and work permit will be valid until June 2020. There are no requirements for the employer and I will be looking to obtain permanent residency prior to its lapse.

CAD Efficiency

Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, with good experience in Bently Microstation and ArchiCad (BIM). Sketchup for 3D design development , combined with VRay and Photoshop for high quality rendering capabilities. When I joined CF.Architects Bently Microstation was the practice’s primary drafting programme. Due to business growth and future foresight to BIM

integration a decision was made to migrate to AutoCAD. I created the office template and drawing standards which I have continuously developed throughout my time there giving me a deep understanding of AutoCAD, office workflow and efficiency but also a great appreciation of drawing and information clarity.

Construction Detail and Specification

Experienced in detailing, specification and co-ordiation of a variety of packages across whole projects. Working with clients to a budget and established brief on new build, refurbishment and conservation. Integration of building regulations, planning

requirements and sustainability accreditation while minimising any negative impact of the design, budget and timescale. I am experienced in producing NBS Specification at both a domestic and commercial level.

Project Coordination

A close working relationship with consultants and contractors has given me added awareness with respect to project coordination and the development of efficient and effective design. I have experience

with co-ordination of projects at all stages, from client introduction meetings to on-site management and completion certification and can competently lead project meetings.

At CF.Architects I was involved in nine RIBA competition entries, five of which were nationally shortlisted. When successfully

managed, competitions boosted creativity while encouraging the design discussion and progression of fee paying projects.

Pre-School Education £800,000 ($1,100,000) 700m2 (7,500ft2) RIBA Stages 0-5

Having been heavily involved from the beginning, through a feasibility study we developed the design brief to include an extension at ground floor to give larger spaces with connection to the outdoor play area. The new extension allowed for shifting of floor area required by the 80 child nursery to the ground floor, opening up the possibility for two apartments on the top floor, a lucrative design improvement for the client. Through a drawn out planning process with successful coordination of a wider consultant team, planning was granted for the full brief

with conditions. Working with the existing steel frame, which suffered from a series of badly planned and temporary extensions we removed the front and rear façade to open up the building, focusing on the nursery branding and ethos of excellence and inspiration. During detail design and construction phases, I lead coordination of the consultant team and represented CF.Architects at site meetings. The project is set to achieve the environmental benchmark of BREEAM Very Good and is due for completion at the end of June 2018.

“the design maximised capacity and usability while setting precedent for considered design on future development in the area 06

Howard Chase is a bespoke office building for the Newsquest media group in Essex. Although strictly limited on budget the design maximised capacity and usability while setting precedent for considered design on future development in the area. Flexible open plan office space, designed on sustainable first principles, provided a new fit-for-purpose building that will enable the expanding company to continue publishing with rapidly changing demands in the 21st Century.

As Project Architect, I led the consultant team during detail design, tender and preconstruction phases. With construction due to start June 2018, before my departure all pre-construction RFIs from the contractor have been resolved and a precisely detailed 12month construction programme is due to begin.

This extension to a Grade II listed cottage, parts of which date back to the 16th century, is a sensitive yet clearly distinctive addition, providing much needed additional living space for a growing family. From initial sketch stage through to completion, I was involved at all key stages including contract administration and on-site management. I also used this project as part of a comparative study for my professional exams. Although the property was not listed, its location within an area of outstanding natural beauty and a conservation area required a very robust planning argument. We invested more time than is traditionally required for a planning application with the intention that carefully thought detail at an early stage would help reassure the planning authority. In my spare time, I built a model emphasising the attention in massing and detail, to support the planning application.

Unfortunately for personal reasons the client sold their house before submitting the application. It is a project I was looking forward to progressing through detail design, however it has also taught me the fragility of the construction sector, albeit on a small scale.

Due to an interesting change in planning policy, with the aim to increasing housing stock, permitted development rights included change of use from agricultural buildings to residential. The existing building must also be structurally sound and the form retained to avoid disruption the surrounding landscape. The existing concrete and steel frame barn would be insulated from the inside with an additional structural inner leaf built to support a new first floor. Externally it would require

a new roof and over clad in timber weather boarding, also providing a cleaner aesthetic. New openings in the structure stimulated an interesting exercise in proportion. I led the project through detailed design and specification with a small consultant team. I advanced the CF.Architects AutoCAD template to allow for greater level of detail clarity and inclusion of interior design, which has now become the new office standard.
