PE'CAN CAFÉ New York, NY

The challenge for this 800 sf. cafĂŠ was to fulfill the ambitious program including seating for 34, service bar, display cases, back work counter and equipment in a modern and comfortable space with a European flavor. To accomplish the project goals, we created fixed custom tabletops that turn up the wall and continue on the ceiling creating canopies lighting the seating areas. The cascading rhythm of the tables and ceiling panels direct the customers along the service bar terminating at the barista area. Built-in display niches and shelving on the rear wall provide visible display and flank the flush monitors which alternate menus and images. Fixed stone bars at the large front windows anchor the beginning of the space while the orange wall at the rear terminates the axis. The Hickory wood (in the Pecan family) brings a warmth and organic nature to the space, while the monolithic slab counters and light floor and wall tiles are in keeping with the overall modern aesthetic.

EMERALD PLANET Noho, NY

The Emerald Planet's 1,700 sf restaurant in Noho provides an alternative and contemporary approach to specialty food service that is both beautiful and highly functional. RRA incorporated an expansive glass facade, dramatic lighting, and complimentary natural materials to communicate the restaurant's concept of healthy, high quality food and value pricing in an elegant and relaxed setting. Custom designed details include a belly bar fabricated from rebar, a mica screen wall and colored concrete floor. RRA also designed a second 2,000 sf location in Rockefeller Center that incorporates a 225 sf juice bar.

NEW WORLD COFFEE

New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania The design mandate was to create a prototype store that evokes the warmth and aroma associated with authentic espresso beverages. Materials such as bronze, stone, and cherry were used to establish this atmosphere. To catch the attention of passersby, a green-gold backdrop was used to generate an inviting warm glow, contrasted by cream colored walls and floor, and enhanced by the ambient lighting. Twenty-eight additional stores opened in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania over the next two and a half years.

AMERICA’S COFFEE New York, NY

This prototype coffee/espresso bar required the counter to be a high visibility, high design kiosk, appropriate to its location on the concourse level at the World Trade Center, providing efficient pedestrian queuing without interrupting the heavy flow of traffic in the busy public corridor. The materials were carefully selected to coincide with the overall dynamic of the space yet be functional and easily maintained. The front counter is a combination of marble and composite stone, while the back work counter is stainless steel. Blue anilinedyed and light stained Ash create a differentiation between the central ‘barista’ and the serving counter with serving trays at the specialty drink counter laminated with heat-sensitive, liquid crystal sheets that react to the heat of the cups set on them, creating ephemeral designs on the counter. The rear wall is painted with a motif of the world map, pierced by three flat-screen, plasma televisions while remaining walls are treated in encaustic paint in rich shades of maroon, yellow and green complementing the logo.

THE APPLE SOHO STORE New York, NY

Following its “think different” maxim, Apple Computer transformed a former post office in New York’s Soho into the first of its retail stores, creating a prototype for other Apple Stores around the world as well as new standards for retail design. The 18,000 sf interior is inviting, with its use of costume-designed glass features – a 15 ft. high staircase, a bridge and a 70 ft. long skylight – echoes the iconic design sensibility of Apple products. RRA was a member of the collaborative design group of Steve Jobs, Apple and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The Apple Store has garnered numerous accolades, including recognition by The American Institute of Architects und Business Week for Design Excellence.

THE COCA-COLA STORE Fifth Avenue, NY

RRA designed the flagship retail space for one of the most recognizable brands in the world. The interior of the Fifth Avenue Coca-Cola store is distinguished by a 150 ft. illuminated path and undulating rays of red and white that invite visitors to experience the full length of the floor plan. The path works in conjunction with a monumental staircase, terrazzo floors and custom merchandising elements designed from leather, birds-eye maple, glass and bronze - all of which reflect the dynamism, timelessness and global presence of the Coca-Cola brand.

CITYSTORE New York, NY

CityStore is a small 450 sf souvenir shop located in the landmarked Municipal Building in lower Manhattan. Our role was to design a space for the CityStore that would begin to create a brand for the store, to get as much of the merchandise on display as possible and to increase customer traffic in the small touched away space. The budget made this the most inexpensive retail space our office has ever worked on. The store is oriented around the large window behind the cash wrap. Using only slat wall, vinyl flooring and paint we mixed the color palette of each to create blocks and areas within the space. A floating gypsum board panel over the cash wrap creates a focal point directing customers to the display case and cash wrap..

COLUMBUS CIRCLE WINES New York, NY

With the design expertise of RRA, this 2720 sf space was transformed into a wine store. To work with the challenging, off-center entry and long, linear floor plan, RRA decided to create distinct merchandise regions with a diagonal path. The path is a tinted concrete band that divides the reclaimed wood floor. Custom designed Brazilian cherry display units line the path and lend a rhythmic pulse to the merchandising. The path culminates at the Enomatic tasting unit which allows customers to sample a variety of fine wines. Proper wine storage (horizontal), subtle signage, and precise climate control were particularly important to this client.

RESTORATION HARDWARE Broadway, New York, NY

RRA joined with Seaton Wilson Architects to restore the historic space in of Griffith Thomas’ Mortimer Building - one of the first commercial structures in the “Ladies Mile” Shopping district of Manhattan. RRA’s team designed the 16,408 interior retail space to conform to Restoration Hardware’s design standards while maintaining the original architectural integrity of the historic building. To allow access to the additional retail space in the cellar, we designed a grand staircase that opens up the ground floor and provides a focal point.

Soho, New York, NY

For the second Restoration Hardware Store, RRA’s scope included restoring the original architectural details while updating and revitalizing the interiors. Across three stories, 16,000 sf breaks into 10,000 sf of merchandising space and 6,000 sf of stock.

TRACY REESE New York, NY Ronnette Riley Architect transformed this 2,200 sf space to mimic the sweeping curves of a woman’s body to reflect the soft feminine lines of Tracy Reese’s signature design style. New curved walls, shaped like an hourglass visually divide the space into two areas, creating separate display areas with a new custom fuchsia resin cash wrap, custom curved stainless steel display rods and fixtures, cove lighting and central chandeliers further accentuate the space and create flowing lines.

JOHN BARRETT SALON New York, NY

RRA oversaw construction of this 9,000 sf salon above the executive floors at Bergdorf Goodman’s. Our team assembled a set of construction drawings and sourced the materials necessary to implement London based designer David Collin’s interiors. We also were able to expand and rearrange the makeup and pedicure areas and bathrooms so the salon could accommodate for a rapidly expanding client base.

CAFFE COLLEZIONE Tokyo, Japan

In the trend of the newest American coffee bars, Caffe Collezione makes a conscious break from traditional images of cafes - be they Japanese, Italian, or French - instead it is elegant, contemporary, inviting, and simultaneously upscale and functional. The fram-less glass facade encourages a continual interaction with the street. The interior shapes, materials, and textures are illuminated and inviting the passerby. Conversely, sitting at the window counter allows patrons to view the activities of the street.

TELECOM ITALIA Rome & Milan, Italy

A premier provider of telecommunications products and services asked RRA to design flagship retail stores in Rome and Milan. The stores are highly flexible spaces where customers can interact with and experience a vast array of products. This flexibility and interaction is achieved through a custom designed display system made from cantilevered teak wood shelves that bridge spaces between walls and windows. RRA’s design also uses technology in unique ways to promote our client’s distinct advantages as a cutting edge technology company. Interactive stations, projected graphics and large plasma monitors allow the client to achieve a variety of marketing objectives throughout the store.

NEW BALANCE NORTH JERSEY Hasbrouck Heights, NJ

New Balance engaged Ronnette Riley Architect to design and install a new single-brand shoe store in New Jersey that could serve as a prototype for future locations. The 1900 sq ft space was long and narrow, and our challenge was to come up with a design that could attract attention from the street and, at the same time, be visually inspiring to shoppers within the store. We used a series of concentric arcs to suggest sports stadiums and running tracks and counteract the narrow confines of the store, creating rhythm and motion throughout.
