Bi–hemispheric moon complication TT H OEU C MHA N T HI E N SSI K D YE

Rönkkö Icarus Bi-Hemispheric Moon Complication displays the position of the moon in the two hemispheres – with a dial divided horizontally into a northern and southern half. The legend of flying Icarus rising and falling is visible in the dial. As in life, It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up again. In this case Icarus takes a fall, but will rise to the top as well. The position of the moon and its phases are opposite on both sides of the planet earth. That´s why Icarus features a display that allows to see the position of the moon in the northern (on the top half of the dial) and southern (on the bottom half of the dial) hemispheres. Rönkkö´s In-house complication features two multifaceted 10,5 mm Icarus moon talismans, displayed in an arched aperture that runs on the entire upper and lower half of the dial. The moon disc is engraved with precise constellations, North Star Polaris being the pole in the center of the dial, as seen in the night sky. In northern hemisphere aperture the full moon displays at 12 o´clock position and black moon at 9 o´clock, moon disc rotating counterclockwise. Simultaneously in southern hemisphere aperture the full moon displays at 6 o´clock position and black moon at 3 o´clock, moon disc rotating counterclockwise. The Icarus moon talisman itself measures 10,5 mm and is crafted to be faceted interpretation of winged flying Icarus with over 180 facets. The moon talisman is made of electrum – the ancient alloy of gold and silver fused together. The Silver Sky Edition of 10 pieces comes with two Icarus moon phase talismans in the blue dial side; an additional talisman is in free-rotation at the middle of the labyrinthine rotor in an open case back coated with clear sapphire glass. The Icarus comes with a matte black strap of genuine alligator leather. The hands with Swiss Super Luminova come in stainless steel, matching the case. All the stars in the dial and six of the hour indexes are luminous in the dark. The subtle sign of watchmaker Rönkkö is engraved straight inside the sapphire crystal with high definition. The silent signature of the maker is visible in certain angles. Each of the 10 exclusive handmade pieces of Icarus Silver Sky Edition retails for 15 400 euros, excluding VAT.

TOUCH THE SKY

Reach for the Stars The young Icarus has a father, Daedalus, an architect and inventor. The man who had built the labyrinth for a king Minos to imprison the half-bull, half-man creature called Minotaur. Icarus yearned to escape the island of Crete where he and his father had been imprisoned in the very labyrinth Daedalus had created. He was a prisoner in the labyrinth of his own making and was determined to escape with Icarus. As a solution Daedalus creates Icarus wings out of feathers and beeswax. Icarus wanted to fly. “Don’t fly too close to the sun,” Daedalus warns his son, “your wings will melt.” Everyone knows that Icarus got excited, ignored the warning and plunged to his doom at sea. The Greek myth of young Icarus has been referenced in centuries of art, literature, and design. For ages the myth has been told as a cautionary tale where emotion clouds the judgement. We forget that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low, because seawater would ruin the lift in his wings. Flying too low is even more dangerous than flying too high, since it feels deceptively safe. In other words, we rarely if ever hear: Don’t be too humble. Don’t be too quiet. Don’t play too safe. We haven’t heard that part of the legend. Too many of us remain at our safe comfort zone through life – not utilizing our full potential. Be bold. Only bravery accompanied with ingenuity will set you free. Today creativity is scarce and more valuable than ever. It’s a reminder that you and your ideas will never make it off the ground if you’re not willing to embrace the risk and fear of falling. Do something unpredictable to make it larger than life. Fall nine times and stand up ten. When life knocks you down, stand back up. No matter what. What matters that you choose to do it. Be a man who makes a personal commitment to excellence and to victory, even though the ultimate victory can never be completely won. Only you are the one, who knows how high – or how far you can fly.

How to set Icarus into the orbit Guide for Setting the Moon Phase. I.

The Bi-Hemispheric Moon Complication displays the position of the moon in the two hemispheres – with a dial divided horizontally into a northern N and southern S aperture. The position of the moon and its phases are opposite on both sides of the planet. That´s why Icarus features a display that allows to see the position of the moon in the northern N (on the top half of the dial) and southern S (on the bottom half of the dial) hemispheres. Both moon talismans will rotate to display the full moon at the same time of the month at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. The black moon is indicated when the moon talismans are not visible. The time between the full moon and the black moon is half of 29,5 days. The whole moon cycle is normally 29,5 days from full moon to full moon and black moon to black moon. Since the Bi-hemispheric moon phase works on a 24 hour cycle, it´s important to follow these steps to make sure the moon phase changes in precision with the start of the new day at midnight. During the period of two years, seven and a half months, the calendar deviates one day. I I.

Pull the crown out two positions to enter the time setting mode by hand. Turn the hands past 12 o’clock noon until you see the light full moon talisman leap anticlockwise one time. After reaching this point, continue moving the hands clockwise towards 12 o’clock midnight – any position between 10 and 14. I I I.

Now setting of the moon phase so that the light full moon talisman is fully visible in the 12 o’clock opening. To do this, push the crown one step into the case – fast adjustment mode – and turn the crown anticlockwise until the light full moon talisman completely fits the opening in the dial at 12 o’clock. IV.

Using lunar calendar of the year, count the number of days since the last full moon to your current date. Turn the crown so that the full moon talisman leaps one time per day, one time leap for each day that has passed since the last full moon. V.

Set the precise time in the normal manner by pulling the crown and then adjusting the hands. Important to keep in mind: since you turned the hands past midnight, they are now in the AM period. If for instance the time is 8 PM, you must turn the hands past 12 noon, and then onwards to 8 o’clock. If you don’t do this, the moon phase will change 12 hours later than it should. Finish the setup by pushing the crown into the case. In time, Icarus will fall to the bottom and rise to the top.
