Self-Initiated Project Brief Project Title: Improving and innovating the living experience (Home living experience design). Context: What is the context of the project, who does it aect directly, who is the target ‘audience’ and / or stakeholder(s)? -The context of the project is the environment in which people live (the home experience). Because of the epidemic so the amount of time people spend at home will increase, so the at-home activity experience is more of a direction to address people's lifestyles. The target group is broad. What do you hope to achieve? What problems are you trying to solve with your project? What are the main 'hooks' or 'drivers' for you? -The aim that this project is trying to express is to make people's lives at home more qualitative and to enjoy the ultimate in home service care despite their busy schedules. The main driver is life data and how to make better use of the data information in people and their home life to give people the care they get. This was the direction of research and interest at the beginning of the project, with the triangle attempting to present it because they are all linked and reflect a pattern of mutual influence on the environment.

The reason and value for wanting to design this aspect is that because of the epidemic, people now stay at home most of the time, whether it is for work or parties. So it is a good research direction to improve people's health and lifestyle, and to give them a more humane home service. It allows data from the environment to help the user process this information.

Home Data Research and Ideas for Solutions

Seat usage data: -The trajectory of the chair as it moves during use creates an interesting trajectory graphic. -The shaded area of the cushion being pressed against my body yields my sitting figures. -Collecting data on different sitting patterns might tell you whether your usual sitting posture is healthy?


Clothes hanging on the door&Data on the use of the heater box: -How can the decontamination of clothes be ensured in an epidemic environment and is there a better way to care for clothes when they are not being used? -The weather affects the usage of your clothe. -The temperature is automatically adjusted every fifteen minutes, with a blue light when the temperature is at its lowest temperature and a red light when it is doing hot. There is a button on the side of the heater box to adjust the temperature. It is normally subject to the weather and is only switched on at night when you are sleeping.


Pillow usage data: -Is it possible to have data on the number of times the head is pressed against the pillow during sleep, and when the bedding is washed, as a reminder? -Do you have these data to know if you are sleeping in a healthy position and if your hygiene is up to date? -During sleep, data from different sleeping positions can determine information about the user's health, as well as which sleeping positions are the quickest to fall asleep in and increase comfort, which can improve the design of the bedding to connect with the user's preferences.


Data on the use of items in the kitchen area: -The data on the use of salt, sugar, oil and other spices can be collected and then designed and arranged in such a way that they can be used and held more easily. You can also find out if there is any wasteful usage. Can you save, or how can you use empty spice bottles? -Kitchen rags tend to get dirty over time, could there be a product that regularly collects the number of times they have been used and reminds the user that it is time to change them?


Bathroom and object usage data: -The mirror can record the user's daily status and can be used for advice or communication, giving the user a more personalised service. -The use of the washbasin gives data on usage habits from the splash of water when washing hands and the fingerprints on the tap switch. -The data on the use of toiletries and shower towels shows that they are used frequently, so could a product be designed that collects the time they are used so that people can hear when it is time to change them, take care of their personal hygiene, etc.? -How do you know that these items need to be replaced? A product could be designed to help users record usage data, always reminding them of hygiene and health issues and avoiding using them for too long. Or remind the user that the item is almost out of use and not to forget to buy it again. Relief for times of poor memory. 16

Refrigerator and daily food consumption data: -Date data for food can be collected and recorded as a reminder. -Data collection products can be linked to the fridge for food safety checks and reminders in the home, collect dates of things to inform the user, and remind the director what is in the home when shopping.


Why is Personal Life Data Collected?

The aim was to find out more about the environmental factors in people's lives, which would give inspiration for the design, as I wasn't completely sure which aspect of living design I wanted to do, so I started with research and data collection from the space I live in.


External Input Day1 Feedback(External Experts) -What research have you undertaken that led you to the ‘butler’ idea? – you need be careful re. the inference of ‘butler’ (a subordinate), as opposed to an aid/services that will work with the user on developing healthy habits and ways of thinking. -How do you envisage data being collected by the system? – how would this be shared and stored?. You need to consider aspects of trust, permission, and ethics. -Should the system be encouraging users to stay at home? – could the system be designed to encourage community care and prevention of physical or mental health issues? -The attached might be interesting from some work we are doing at the DHI re. which areas of Personal Data have an bearing on determinants of health – it’s all about the social and economic environment.

Insights Drawn from Interviews KEY FINDINGS Comfort and wellbeing: -Space for private time away from other members of the household was important to most participants -Light, and the feeling of wellbeing related to it, was a key concern for participants, especially in urban areas. -Noise was a concern for participants only once they had experienced the difficulties of living with it. -Energy efficiency was typically perceived in terms of a trade-off between desirable period features and the high cost of heating and other bills. -Security was an issue which participants tended to feel was their own responsibility rather than that of those designing, selling or developing homes. -Accessibility was typically an issue only for older people, those facing illness or living with a disability, and those with very young children. Windows and light: -Many participants across the discussion groups felt that it was important to them to have as much light as possible in their homes. -This was an issue which participants felt strongly about and tended to mention spontaneously, early on in the discussions. Views on this issue were, to some extent, driven by different levels of urbanity and the range of housing stock available in local area. For most participants living in London, light was crucial because the city felt dark and enclosed. A high level of light was associated with wellbeing for participants in the research, and an antidote to the stressful environment of the city. Natural Light There is strong evidence that natural light has a positive impact on health. All five studies exploring relationships of natural light with health outcomes found an effect on at least one of the health outcomes investigated. This was the final design direction I chose at the time! Why did I choose it? -Because the concept of recycling will become more and more popular in the future and recycling at home is a good area to cover, as it is a socially beneficial trend for every family to recycle and reuse recyclable items at home.

In the kitchen of the future, I think it might be a different life experience to have a recycling workshop area to guide people to use household waste to make alternatives at home, making recycling more accessible in the home. There's also the idea of enhancing the enjoyment of the home and maybe a family activity, just like cooking, with the help of instructions and instruction booklets, food and waste items that can normally be recycled are collected in recycling boxes and disposed of. And use the tools from the recycling range to make them. Using the recycling tools as suggested in the instruction booklet to make alternatives that can help in your life so that you can recycle and reuse at home!

The purpose of the research was to better understand the difficulties and environmental factors of recycling at home nowadays, to achieve thorough and convenient recycling, to make recycling acceptable to every household, and also to collect what categories and proportions of household waste are normally collected so that I can give a reference of who to recycle. 37



This is a comprehensive list of household waste that can be recycled. This will help you to test the materials and recycling targets later on.


From my previous research on the proportion of recycled waste and the household waste table, I found that paper waste and fruit and vegetable peel waste make up a large proportion of household waste and they are both easily recyclable. The combination of the two has led me to the recycling targets that I will be using and the next step will be to investigate how people are recycling them now.


Paper and Fruit and Vegetable Waste Recycling

This research is about a Japanese primary school student who created delicious paper from rotting vegetables: grapes, okra, onions, ginger, carrots. He experimented with a variety of vegetables and compiled a thick notebook of information. He uses a variety of foods to create paper. He also included photographs of the fibres corresponding to each paper and wrote down the strength and the difficulty of the writing tests, even adding an A record a few years later to indicate whether the taste had changed. The combination of paper through fruit and vegetable waste is very close to my idea.


Fruit Peel Waste Research


The process of making and recycling now

This was an interesting discovery in the research: Dutch students have invented a way to turn fruit and vegetable waste into 'fruit leather', which can then be made into stylish handbags. The men started working on the Rotterdam Fruit Peel project out of an urge to deal with the huge amount of food waste discarded at the local outdoor market. It involves washing, mashing, boiling and then drying the waste. The idea and the products that came out were very helpful in the direction of my project.


Benefits of Recycling Fruit Peels

-One of these benefits is saving money by turning kitchen waste such as orange peel, pineapple peel and vegetable waste into multi-purpose natural household cleaners instead of buying expensive, polluting chemical cleaners. -In addition to this, the 'homemade enzyme' solution can also be used as a natural pesticide, reducing the need for chemical pesticides, and not only that, it can also be used as an organic fertiliser. -There is also the fact that it does not harm the skin and also allows the skin to be cared for, reducing the need to spend on skin care products. -Air Freshener: Using orange peels as a room air freshener is an excellent way to keep your home smelling delightfully citrusy. All you need to do is to gather some aromatic ingredients of your choice like sandalwood or cinnamon and make a potpourri. The best part is that it is 100% natural, ecofriendly and super cheap! 44

Why design a recycling processor: Through previous research, it was found that recycling paper and peel waste is a very complicated step and uses a lot of tools, and if home recycling is needed it should be smarter and more convenient, so that people can handle recycling them without too much time and effort. So the idea was born to upgrade.

Development of Recycling Materials & Recycling Processors

What can’t be recycled? Anything that isn’t food, packaging of any kind, liquids such as milk, oils, and liquid fats can’t be recycled. Make sure you separate food waste from any packaging including plastic wrapping and glass jars first – this avoids contamination. If the food waste is contaminated, it can’t be recycled. What can be recycled? Any and all uneaten foods including dairy, meat and bones, fruit, vegetables and peelings, rice and pasta, cakes and biscuits, eggs and eggshells, fish bones and shells, pet foods, tea bags and coffee grounds can be recycled. -In Scotland, 80% of households have a separate food waste collection but only 55% make use of this service. 48

Producing a Questionnaire on the Value of Recycling at Home

Why a questionnaire: -Doing the questionnaire is a better way to collect awareness and desire of people of different age groups to recycle at home, so that I can know whether my design ideas are worthwhile and whether people recognise them, so that the design can be meaningful. -The answers shown afterwards show that people are still very interested in recycling at home, especially young people. Many of them also gave very interesting comments, such as the materials that are recycled through the recycler are a good output and can be used in very interesting ways, etc. 49

The collected orange peel is stirred and pureed so that it can be fully recycled and shaped.


Flatten the processed orange peel and bake in the oven at 170 degrees for half hour.

After baking, the orange peel turns into a leatherlike material, which is then left in a dry place for two days so that it can be used as leather. However, the peel alone is not a good material for recycling as the leather obtained by recycling the fruit peel is hard and brittle, so the range and comfort of use is not very good, so I will be experimenting with a mixture of paper waste and fruit peel.


Recycling experiments on paper waste

1. The collected paper packaging waste is shredded and soaked in water. 2. Put them through a shredder to turn them into paper pulp. 3. Put the pulp into the water and stir it. 4. A mesh filter is used to re-paper the pulp (papermaking principle), which means that the pulp is separated from the water again.


The filtered pulp is dried and when the re-cycled pulp is completely dry, it can be separated from the filter and turned into the recycled paper in the picture on the right, the paper is a bit rough, but just like soft tissue paper.


Making recycled paper from fruit peels experiment


I have combined the principles of fruit peel waste and paper waste, and through many experiments I have made recycled fruit peel paper, using different fruit peels (orange peels, mango peels, apple peels, etc.) mixed with paper waste. The resulting recycled paper is not only soft, but also smells like fruit, and through experimentation has the ability to absorb water and oil, and can also be made in different thicknesses. Thicker recycled paper can be used as coasters. It can also be cut into the shapes you want, no different from ordinary paper.


Summary of Materials Experiments

After a number of failed experiments, a lot of experience was gained in the making of the process, and it was crucial to practice how to set up the internal construction of the recycling processor afterwards. The purpose of the material experiment was to see more visually that the waste material could be recycled into new material and not just thrown away. It is also important to show people the finished product, whether it is suitable for use and whether it is recognised for its value. I was also surprised to get such a perfect recycled material. So it's important to stick to and use the right recycling methods.


Research and Development into the Process of Home Recycling Processors

Smart Home Product Research What Will Smart Homes Look Like 10 Years From Now? Health applications will drive at least some of the growth of the smart home over the next decade. Cameras and sensors embedded in refrigerators will suggest more nutritious alternatives in cases where people are getting sugary sodas too often. Similar technology in medicine cabinets will check whether residents are taking their prescriptions. So the design of a smart recycling processor will also refer to these future home product designs to help me complete the design of the home recycling system. Smart Home Product Research What Are Smart, Connected Products? Smart, connected products have three core elements: physical components, “smart” components, and connectivity components. Smart components amplify the capabilities and value of the physical components, while connectivity amplifies the capabilities and value of the smart components and enables some of them to exist outside the physical product itself. The result is a virtuous cycle of value improvement. What Can Smart, Connected Products Do? Intelligence and connectivity enable an entirely new set of product functions and capabilities, which can be grouped into four areas: monitoring, control, optimization, and autonomy. A product can potentially incorporate all four (see the exhibit “Capabilities of Smart, Connected Products”). Each capability is valuable in its own right and also sets the stage for the next level. For example, monitoring capabilities are the foundation for product control, optimization, and autonomy. A company must choose the set of capabilities that deliver its customer value and define its competitive positioning. 64

We'll be able to ask Alexa how much time is left on the device or control them from our smartphones at work. 6.Smart Spaces Outside Of The Home. 7. Increased Voice Control Integration.




This is a first draft of the functional introduction to the home recycler, it shows the main process of how the recycler works and what it should do, initially introducing the functional icons of the recycler so that it is more straightforward to illustrate and introduce. These functions are derived from previous material experiments.


Feedback from the Recycled Materials Experiment



The purpose of the post-recycling material trial feedback form is to conduct a market survey of the finished products (recycled paper) resulting from the previous material trials to see if people accept these materials and how well they recognise the value of these materials. The feedback showed that the majority of respondents still recognise the value of recycled paper and are happy to continue using it.

Further Design of the Home Recycling System -elaboration of the value and upgrading of the model

For the shape of the recycler, I have devised three ideas. One is a half cylinder, one is a square with rounded edges and the other is a trapezoidal cube. These three shapes are also the result of my research from other existing household product shapes. The model material is made from stiff cardboard. The model was made for more visual reference to see which model had the space to accommodate the required features, which helped a lot in finalising the model.


Selecting the Final Model Solution

The trapezoidal structure was chosen because it fits well with the operation of the internal functions of the machine and the use of the touch screen display for control, and the user becomes comfortable and ergonomic when using the screen. The shape is not similar to other products and has its own unique structure.

The Origins of Product Logo Design



The Process of Making a Recycler Model

I used a foam white board to model the final product. I kept experimenting with how to make a one-piece bent exterior and found that by cutting out the bend crease area (as shown in the picture), I could make the bend and the curve was very rounded.

After making the main part of the recycler, add the feet underneath to make the model more realistic.


Afterwards, the entrance and the display part were made into a trapezoidal shape, and the curved part was made in the same way as before, so that the curved part was more rounded and the product was more realistic.

The final model is shown here, with white as the colour of the machine, which enhances the look of the product and is more in keeping with the home product.


Recycling System App Interface Design

The Homre app is an interactive service that helps connect recycling machines. It can be set up from your mobile phone and if you are away during the production process you can use the app to monitor the recycling machine at all times. The app also has a reminder function when the production is complete. Intelligent control is achieved. 82

Summary of the Project

This project was the final project in the undergraduate programme and was a self-initiated one. The results of the half term long study, through research and continuous effort on my part, as well as the tutorials of my teachers, were a good stage. The strengths of this project were the experimentation with recycled waste materials, the organisation of a questionnaire and a materials workshop. I have been able to draw inspiration from the social environment in a more comprehensive way, especially with the weekly one-to-one tutorials, the group exhibition meetings at each stage and the two external expert tutorials, which have helped me a lot. The project is also becoming more mature and complete, which would not have been possible without the tutors' support. At the end of the project, I worked hard to upgrade the model and to produce the video. I did my best to make the final model of the project more realistic, and the various design, flow and illustration diagrams were all very detailed. I did my best to make the final model as realistic as possible, and the flowcharts and explanatory diagrams were very detailed. Of course, there are some drawbacks. I have not gone deep enough into the product system and environment, the recycling process of the product and the recycled waste materials are not detailed enough, which are all parts that need to be improved in the future, and finally, the market popularity of the product and the home environment of each person are not well researched. Finally, I have not done enough research on the popularity of the products and the environment of each person's home, but I have done my best to do so, even though I am capable of doing so. Because of the epidemic, it was rather limited. In conclusion, the final project of my undergraduate studies was well done, and the design direction was good, as it was about a socially beneficial aspect: recycling at home, which is a direction of great interest in the future. In the end, I still need to tell myself that I need to keep working on upgrading my design thinking and strengthening my ability to express and make up stories. Project Research Miro board Link: 98
