About Our Founder: Anthony M. Pilaro In 1996, Anthony (Tony) Pilaro founded the Ron Brown Scholar Program to honor the late Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown and his legacy of achievement and global leadership. From its very inception, Tony Pilaro wanted this to be no ordinary scholarship program. He was determined to increase the number of African American leaders in his endeavor to create a new kind of “old boys network”, that is more inclusive and reflective of today’s world. Each generation of these Ron Brown Scholar leaders, after years of community building during their college and postgraduate pursuits, through formative influences such as mentoring and conference experiences, consult and work with one another, ensuring continuity. The goal is to keep Ron Brown’s ethic by “doing well by doing good.” For 25 years, Tony Pilaro’s philanthropy and vision have created a highly successful network concept

for emerging young leaders. Tony’s engagement and support in creating a viable model for young people to succeed, and remain committed to giving back, is what makes his vision extraordinary.

Message from the President & CEO On behalf of all of us at the Ron Brown Scholar Program, I’m delighted to share with you our 25th Anniversary Directory. In these pages you’ll find photos and brief biographies of each and every Ron Brown Scholar. What you have in front of you is an entire generation whose lives have been changed, from the ones selected before the turn of the millennium to the class of 2021, who weren’t even born when those first classes were graduating college. This extraordinary group of people has coalesced thanks to the vision of one man: Anthony M. Pilaro, who established this program a quarter-century ago as a living monument to the memory of Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown. Every day for the last 25 years, our Scholars have been out there, doing their best to live up to Secretary Michael A. Mallory President & CEO

Brown’s example, achieving excellence in their chosen fields while devoting themselves bettering their communities, our country, and the world.

We are so proud of each of the 534 Scholars featured in this book. From medicine and science to law, public service, and the arts, Ron Brown Scholars have become leaders in a dazzling array of fields. As impressive as the Scholars are, what that number doesn’t quite capture is something hinted at in our Program’s unofficial motto, “The Value of One, The Power of All.” RBSP is more than a group of remarkable individuals: we are a family. Each Scholar is strengthened by their relationships to every other Scholar. For all their singular accomplishments, those 534 Scholars constitute a network of 142,311 connections. That web of relationships is both safety net and scaffolding, protecting our Scholars and allowing them to reach new heights. Many friends who have helped this Program along the way: the readers and interviewers who do the difficult and necessary work of selecting a class from the thousands of applications we receive each year, the Trustees and Advisory Board members who give of their time and insight, the mentors who share so freely the wisdom they have gained through experience, and of course the donors whose faith in us makes it all possible. When I think of the lives that each of these people will touch, I see that the reach of this network is truly incalculable. Our ambition may be boundless, but our method is actually quite simple: identify intellectually gifted, serviceminded young people and keep them connected and, over time, they will empower one another. The approach is simple, yes, but not easy. I am so grateful our amazing staff, our many friends, and of course the generous donors who have made it all possible. The many accomplishments recorded in this Directory speak more eloquently than I can to the impact of your investments in us. They have paid untold dividends in the lives of our Scholars and in the many, many lives they in turn have touched. As the Ron Brown Scholar Program looks forward to the next 25 years, I am nothing but optimistic. Our planet and society face unprecedented challenges, but everywhere I turn I see our brilliant Scholars working for the betterment of us all. From climate change and public health to social justice and democratic engagement, I see Ron Brown Scholars leading the way forward. Our artists, writers, and performers continue to move and inspire me by exploring in their work what it means to be truly human. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to spend the last two and a half decades in the company of these Scholars. My pride in them and in the accomplishments detailed in this book is exceeded only by my belief that their greatest chapters have not yet been written. The Ron Brown Scholar Program may be 25 years old, but we’ve only just begun!

One Mission, Three Programs Serving 2,000 students annually Our three initiatives support young people who share Ron Brown’s dedication toindividual excellence, leadership and public service:

The Ron Brown Scholarship: Established in 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national scholarship for lowincome African American high school seniors. Ron Brown Scholars receive $40,000 towards attending their college of choice, and are provided mentoring, leadership experiences, and service opportunities through college and beyond. To date, the Program has awarded over $21M in scholarships to 534 Ron Brown Scholars.

Ruth and Norman Rales Ron Brown – Ruth and Norman Rales Leaders Network: Established in 2011, the Leaders Network is a career development program for Ron Brown Scholars and Captains. Ron Brown Captains are the top 2-3% of scholarship applicants invited to join the network and receive personal and professional development services alongside Ron Brown Scholars. Our Corporate Partners interact with over 1,200 Scholars and Captains through networking activities and serve as a trusted source of job and internship opportunities.

Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS): Launched in 2016, GPS is a free innovative college access initiative for African American high school juniors and seniors (as well as their parents and counselors). GPS guides and empowers students through every stage of the college application process with its high-tech and high-touch mentorship approach. GPS has helped support over 4,000 students with the information and inspiration they need to make college accessible.
