At some point everyone experiences the frustration of their computer running slowly and if you are in the middle of something the frustration can be even worse! To help you avoid this situation, you should introduce a regular maintenance schedule and you can use these 2 simple ways speed up your computer. Defragmentation When software writes to the hard drive, it looks for space and then adds the data. Immediately after installing the operating system on a blank hard disk, the data are all contiguous, i.e. they connect without any break. However, over time, empty spaces are created on your hard drive, as software writes new data to the drive and existing data files are deleted. When you save a new file above the original data Windows first tries to fill these newly created spaces, even if this means cutting or fragmenting the file into small pieces. So, not only writing but also reading the file takes longer because the read head of the disk drive needs to get these separate pieces from across the disk. This is why fragmented files slow down the speed of your computer. It follows therefore that one of the best ways to speed up your computer is to find some good defragmentation software that brings together these pieces to reconstruct the files and store them next to each other. This also removes the empty spaces from the disk drive and reduces fractions of hard disk being seen by the operating system as hard - or volume - separated. Clear out your start up programs Another simple way to speed up your computer is to review the number of files that are launching when you start up your computer. There is a database that stores the configuration data for the operating system and all installed software on your computer. Windows comes with many programs at start up, such as iTunes, QuickTime, your anti-virus software, etc. so that these launch automatically and let you start using your computer as soon as possible. The start up file is located in a specific location in the Windows registry and allows Windows to know what software should start running at the same time. However, as you add different software programs or files to your computer over time, some of these also set themselves up to launch automatically when you start up your computer, which can slow it down, as it tries to do too many tasks at the same time. When Windows starts, a multitude of software launches at the same time and the auto start file calls these.

To find out what files are launching when you start up your computer and may be clogging up the process: 1) Open the Start menu, 2) Click on run, 3) Type msconfig (this program provides, as its name implies, to configure Microsoft Windows) 4) Confirm by pressing Enter 5) In the window that opens, go to the Startup tab. This shows you the list of programs that are active at start up (be aware that the process names will not always correspond exactly to the program names, so you may need to work out what some of these are). 6) To speed up your computer, uncheck any boxes that you don't want to launch at start up (but always leave your anti-virus and firewall programs checked so they are active). You should regularly delete any useless files from your computer and regularly use these 2 simple ways to speed up your computer and keep it in good working condition.
