space detaIls HAC:Manchester (or just HAC:Man for short) gets their workspace donated by a larger organization, the Manchester Digital Laboratory, also known as MadLab.

“The building is a 200-year-old former shop and therefore has a lot of quirks,” Clough described. “None of the walls are straight! We have been at MadLab since it opened in January 2010 and have been helping out with the fit-out. We have assisted in building walls and cupboards, fitting a new kitchen, and redecorating the entire bottom floor. Sometimes we think the straightest walls in the place are the ones we’ve built.” MadLab is a technology-focused community center, and they let HAC:Man use the space in exchange for maintenance work and publicity. “We have been to various events including Maker Faire UK and FutureEverything’s Handmade, taking our projects and massive piles of MadLab leaflets to hand out.”
Number of members: “We don’t have any official membership structure,” Bob Clough described. “There are about 10 central attendees and a number of people who drop in for our hack sessions.”

Size of the space: “3,000 sq. ft., spread over two floors,” Clough said. “The workshop area at the back of the ground floor is around 300 sq. ft.” Officers/Leaders: “Most of the necessary organizational work is done by myself and Paul Plowman,” Clough said. Notable equipment: “We’ve mainly been focusing on electronics and have oscilloscopes, soldering stations, and a bubble etch tank free for people to use. We do also have a small number of machine and hand tools, pillar drill, jigsaw.” Members are working on building a RepRap Huxley, a 3D printer.
