Community Noticeboard Vale Roy Mackay
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we post the news that one of Paluma’s most beloved and admired residents, Roy Mackay has passed away. Roy passed peacefully at 9.15pm on Tuesday 12 February at the Regis Aged Care facility in the company of his long-time companion, Colwyn Campbell and his dear friend, Beth Snewin. Roy was 90 years of age. Our sincere condolences to Roy’s family and to Colwyn at this sad time. Nothing Gold Can Stay….by Robert Frost Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower, But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf, So Eden sank to grief. So dawn goes down to day, Nothing gold can stay. Thank you Michelle for your kind words about our and Paluma’s dearest friend. Roy Mackay was a long time contributor to the Rollingstone Rag

Welcome back for 2019 – what a hectic start to the New Year!!! December seems so far away now. Firstly, I hope everyone is safe and dry and your lives are getting back to some sense of normality. There are so many stories, tragic and heroic and our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected in any way by the unfolding events from Wednesday 30 Jan and beyond. To all the Services and Volunteers assisting in the clean up, thank you is not enough; you are the epitome of courage and generosity. Locally, thank you to QPS, SES, Firies and Lions for “being there” when this community needed you. You, as a collective and as individuals, have done a mighty job with the mop up from 5 February. Another big thank YOU to Sandra at NoTCH Deeragun. Sandra and NoTCH provided the Emergency Relief food and products distributed through the RTC, as well as insight and knowledge assisting with the applications for the Emergency Recovery funding. Thank you, THANK YOU, in caps, big black inverted commas, exclamation marks, highlighted and fancy font. “THANK YOU!!!!” There has been a lot of conjecture regarding who can claim the Disaster Recovery payments – if you think you qualify for the payments - apply, the worst that can happen is you are told “no” or you receive the payments. The general guidelines are: if you have had water enter your principal place of residence, either on the floor, through the windows or through the ceiling; your garage needs to be under the same roofline to claim for damage in the garage. The Staff at the RTC are here to assist you with your application either phone, online or fax. We can sight your ID and fax it to the Recovery Fax line. We cannot and do not make the decision and can only offer you the same information as written here. We can assist you with your application or any follow up enquiries. We have included a poster for counselling in the Rag should you or someone you care for appears not to be coping very well. Thank you also to everyone involved with the Christmas Carols. I enjoyed the evening and I hope you all did too. Thank you to our Schools, Students and Staff, Rollingstone and Mutarnee, for your spirited renditions of Christmas Carols and to the Dancers from the Ballroom School of Dance Bluewater. Other important THANK YOU’s go to Judiana and Friends, Trevor P for the music, Paul F and the Rollingstone Firies for Santa’s chariot, The Lions for the food and drinks, the Seniors for the donation of Santa’s treats, those outstanding Fireworks – Ian T, The Association for the facilities and to our very own Santa and Mrs Claus. The Photos are still available at the RTC if you want a copy emailed out to you. Call 47707855. Thank you to Nicole from the Ballroom School of Dance Bluewater for presenting 2 workshops for our School Holiday Activity. Nicole donated these workshops to the Community. The children (and a couple of Mums) learned to Waltz and Samba and capped the workshops off with Dance Games and other activities. Nicole presents dance lessons in Bluewater and may consider classes locally if enough enquiries were received. Nicole’s number is 0419250201 for further enquiries. On 28 March between 9.30 and 3.30pm approx, The ‘Golden Wattle’ the Centrelink Mobile Van will be visiting Rollingstone. Mark the date in the calendar. Might be able to save a trip into town that week. Do you have a business you run locally – considered advertising in the Rollingstone Rag?? Our prices are listed on page 10 and we can offer a year’s advertising at a discounted price. Call 47707855 for more details. Every year we hold a Volunteers Appreciation Function. This year it was held on 24 February. This is the Association’s way of thanking all our volunteers for all the work they do throughout the year. We have over 40 people who regularly give their time to the Association in all capacities, from maintenance, to bus driving, the Op Shop and the Rolly Rag. Thank you. Thank you to the Lions for your wonderful catering, what wonderful teamwork you have. Thank you Irene for washing the tablecloths and Rosie for ironing them. Washing and ironing 14 tablecloths is not a small task. On behalf of the Management Committee, we wish to make thanks for the generous donation received towards the bus. This is a wonderful gesture and is truly appreciated. Congratulations to all the Australia Day Award Winners. These awards are not given lightly and you truly deserve the recognition of your efforts in each category. We have listed the winners and photos on pages 24-25. Carers Qld have already met this year and are planning another meeting for 28 March at 1.30pm. Please if you are in the caring role and need assistance (if only a good belly laugh) this group is for you. It is a free outing with cake, in a very confidential environment. Call Sherree on RISS Advisor on 47258853 for more info or what services are provided. The Community Centre at Deeragun has a contract for Emergency Relief. This is an avenue to use when experiencing financial hardship, finding it difficult to get on top of rent payments or food relief boxes. Sandra will be committing to coming to Rollingstone with the Playgroup on Thursdays for people to have access to this service locally. Well that is me done for March, North Queensland has started the year off in a torrent sooooo here’s hoping the rest of the year sails on a millpond. Keep yourself safe (you are the only one who truly can)…………… Chris P4

One of the nicest people you’ll ever meet has had an unfortunate medical diagnosis and is not really on top of his game at the moment. Richard Pickering is going to require ongoing treatment for some time, so we send him and Barb our love and best wishes. Terri Dallman’s partner Bruce is not well and we’re all hoping and praying further tests will prove positive. And Terri herself turned 90 during February. Such a great age and a wonderful lady, and we wish for her all good things and many more returns. Teresa Jewell is on the improve having now had her condition determined/diagnosed. She tells me she is feeling just so much better. A good news story at last! Fred Gillam had surgery during our break and Maureen Ryan has had surgery end of February, we’re wishing them both a quick recovery and the very best of good luck. And Bob and Judy Holt have both been very ill. They are such great folk, such great fighters and we can only pray that they feel an improvement as soon as possible. Luvya, folks! David & Linda Birse and Julie-Rose Perrott have had surgery and are hopefully now all on the road to recovery. Our best wishes to: Santoria, John McDonald, Mick Coulson, Garry Luff and Alf Morgan who are not feeling too well. It is also our sad duty to announce the passing during February of Roy Mackay. He will be sooooo missed, particularly up on the Mountain and by his many naturalist followers. A remarkable man who had an incredible life – and such a gentleman and a gentle man. Vale Mr. Mackay.

Well, it’s only taken 2½ years but at last we have the multi-purpose (NRL, AFL, Soccer) football goal posts in place on Pace Park. We received a grant for the actual structure but the Community Association has paid for the installation. Let’s hope they prove worthy of our efforts and that the community gets many years of enjoyment from them. We’ve sought advice yet again from numerous professionals regarding solar panels at the Centre, and the consensus of opinion is that it’s not worth our while. The rebate is now so small, and the installation cost would be significant (money we probably don’t have anyway) which would mean by the time we just might start to see some benefit, we’d need new panels! All the “plans” we examined were in the category that “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”; and, believe me, there were plenty of hidden variables. We were unsuccessful in securing funding for a new Bus this time around. Of course, we’ll try again but needed the community to know that it’ll be some time now before we can talk “new Bus” again. We had a bit of water damage in the Op Shop and RTC, but that is swiftly being remedied to get everything back up to scratch. Australia Day celebrations were a disappointment but we’ve already met with Lions in an endeavour to rectify that anomaly and hope we’ve come up with a more successful alternative for 2020. We’ve also had our Volunteers’ Luncheon during February and this was well-attended. Just a small way of showing our volunteers how much they are appreciated and how grateful we are for all their help.

Rollingstone State School Hi Community My name is Andrew Stallman and I’m the Acting Principal for Rollingstone State School. It has certainly been a wet and disrupted first couple of weeks for all as we commence 2019. The rainfall has been a big relief to many across Queensland, but our thoughts go out to all who have been flooded and incurred any loss over the last weeks. I was first introduced to Balgal Beach and Rollingstone when I was driving a small busload of students up to the Tablelands for an excursion. Of course after asking many times if anyone wanted a toilet stop, and only hearing ‘No Mr Stallman’ time after time, a little voice popped up shyly from behind me with ‘Mr Stallman I really, really need to go!!’ Thus, we turned off and proceeded to our pee and beach stop at Balgal Beach. Wasn’t long after that, my family and I were up camping in the area and we eventually bought a block of land although, in the previous weeks I’d have to say pond rather than block. I haven’t always been a teacher, spending much of my early days involved in the agricultural industry. Drought changed my fate by where I found myself teaching English in South East Asia as part of what was supposed to be holiday. I can remember ringing mum from the airport saying that I’d be back in a couple of weeks. Some EIGHT YEARS later I returned home to Australia with a wife and our first daughter in tow. It was a great holiday! I have worked as a teacher and leader in various international schools, spent three years teaching in Cairns and have recently transferred from a small school west of Townsville, Ravenswood State School. We now have four children, two of whom will also attend Rollingstone State School. My family and I feel very privileged to join your community and it is wonderful to work so close to home. I look forward to working with everyone in the near future. Rollingstone State School 2019 It is hard to believe that we are actually commencing week four of the term and have only completed one full week of school. It promises to be a very busy term! We currently have 65 students enrolled at school across three classrooms. Rollingstone is very lucky to continue with its wonderful and dedicated staff and a great bunch of students. It promises to be a fun year! As we endeavour to continue to build on from the great work in previous years, the message hasn’t changed. Our focus continues on providing every student with quality teaching, strengthening our partnerships with the community and providing a variety of activities that will help support in building strong leaders for the future. Most importantly, we will continue to strive to make learning fun! TAG Rolly is on every Tuesday from 9am to 11am. All parents and guardians with young children are welcome to join us for some fun and games. It’s Free and it’s Fun! MYSTIC SANDS GOLF CLUB Well the Course is looking great after the big wet early Feb. Congratulations to all our Season 2018 Saturday comp winners and I am sure all our members will be aiming to do the same or better in 2019. Hard work and practise did pay off with special mention of Sue Thompson who scooped the Ladies awards. Bushrangers presentation day was held on 27th January , the same day the Big Wet started. But nothing dampened the spirits and Ken Jeffree joined many elite past winners in taking out the Bushranger of the Year 2018. Ken was a very popular winner but we are sure the handicapper will watch him closely. Special Recognition award was presented Tyrone Geritz for his support and friendship every Sunday morning. Well deserved!! Remember anyone is most welcome to play Bushrangers on Sunday mornings 9am Tee off. Its 2 ball Ambrose and you can be at any level of golf and don’t need a handicap. We would love to welcome you for some fun and friendship. Don’t forget if you would like to volunteer to adopt and maintain a golf garden, it would be much appreciated. Details available to clubhouse. Hit ém long and straight but most of all enjoy! Cheers…...Gurdy

WILDLIFE CARERS ROLLINGSTONE, BALGAL BEACH and surrounds GWEN CAHILL: GAYE LOVELL: CHRIS GREEN:
BIRDS WALLABIES & KANGAROOS POSSUMS

Well what a month we have had, with the floods and then the cleaning up. Townsville lost many houses and animals but we here in Rollingstone and surrounding areas also got hit hard with people having their homes flooded and belongings ruined and yards washed away. We on the wildlife side lost many Kangaroos and Wallabies. Some that just could not get away from the water and luckily the mums, if they have a Joey on board can close the pouch up with the Joey inside so it has a good chance of survival. So when we check them hopefully they are fine. Some of the Kangaroos around the Golf Club got caught and drowned. Members of the public were calling in about ground dwelling animals, such as your Snakes, Goannas, Bandicoots, Native Rats, spiders yes even them, Bats and Possums even though they are tree dwellers still had to find shelter, unfortunately sometimes around people’s homes. We have had lots of calls about baby Bats and Birds that had fallen from the trees
I can’t begin to imagine the heartbreaking time for all our neighbouring communities who have had to deal with such tragic, devastating floodwaters that inundated their family homes & businesses. Sadly it will take months, years, for these people to recover from this horrifying and cruel event that mother nature dealt everyone. Lucky for us in Toomulla that we didn’t experience the flood waters that others had to contend with. Even though we had approximately 1490mls of rain throughout the two weeks in Toomulla we faired quite well I think until the dreaded mould & mildew turned up on our doorstep!! I am sure there will be lots of upcoming fundraisers for these flood victims that will no doubt start in the very near future which people can support. Toomulla Beach Community Association recently made a donation of In - Kind product to the Bluewater Community - 12 tonne of Cracker Dust was recently delivered to the hall to spread around and allow safe clean access for everyone to their hall. Thank you to Stewart Burbidge for spreading the gravel free of charge. Thanks mate you are a champion I would like to send a big Thank You out to young Marcus Bell & Todd Miko for letting me know recently that there was electrical wires down along Herald Street near the bridge. Not only did they help to save someone from stepping on these live wires, (and that was confirmed by Ergon) their quick thinking actions allowed me to contact Ergon to report that we had a very serious problem. Thank you to Brett for his quick thinking to put the Witches Hats along the dirt track where one half of the line had fallen and to stop Eddie from driving into the wires that were down. We should be very proud of our young kids in the community! Great work! Round 1 of Lucky Numbers for 2019!! First draw - Friday 15th March. There will be one draw each week for 5 weeks with some lucky person winning $50 each week. Cost will be $10 per number. Good Luck everyone! Toomulla Beach Fishing Club - AGM: Saturday 16th March 3pm.. Toomulla Beach Community Assoc Inc - AGM: 16th March 4pm. followed by a BBQ in the park., BYO Chairs & Drinks. How good is the Book Cupboard going!! The Book Cupboard has become so popular and remembering, that the TCC Library bus doesn’t come into Toomulla anymore so it is just so good to see that community people are able to access books to read, at any time and without having to travel far. It has also allowed people to meet other community people when going to use the cupboard. Just the other day there were three people at the cupboard introducing themselves whilst chatting away to each other about the books! Kids books are there as well and this is constantly being used by the community kids. The boys love the fishing books! The plants are also great sellers. I had the honour of receiving the Rollingstone & District Australia Day “Citizen of the Year” Award by Cr Margie Ryder & MP Nick Dametto on the 26th January. I felt very proud to accept this award and to celebrate with other outstanding members of the communities. I enjoy volunteering and being able to contribute some of my own time to help other people in our communities. The benefits are that it gives people self-confidence and satisfaction along with social contact. You get to share your skills and learn new skills along with meeting new people and having fun. The Easter Bunny is on his way….hop hop hop….raffle tickets will be available this month in the Easter Hamper. Tickets $1 each or 6 for $5. We will draw the raffle on Sunday 14th April. Good Luck. I would like to send out a Happy Birthday to those celebrating in March. (Phensri)…...Enjoy your day! Cheers…….Rhonda. P15

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello Members and welcome to a new and exciting year in your Club. Just when I was easing into the new year which promises us much travel (hopefully), content with the constant thundering of drenching rain on the tin roof, that lady everyone dreads, that lady who hounds you to distraction if you are late with your monthly article shattered my peace by advising that the first article for the year was due mid-February. Come on Kerrie, it was only a week ago you undid the shackles that bound me to my desk and you promised me a couple of months break. Surely the time has not gone by that fast. 2018 was suitably farewelled at a party at the Mystic Sands Golf Resort and attended by 70 odd Members. Despite the band kicking off late and yes, no sweets were served, most revellers danced late into the night to witness a spectacular fire works display at midnight. Thank goodness the courtesy bus was there to convey us home and, even more importantly, Tony the driver knew where we all lived! Thanks to all staff at the club and the organizers for a great night. What a magnificent sight the mouth of the Rollingstone Creek is to behold. The sand-bar that has formed over the past decade by Mother Nature has been swept away again by Mother Nature, taking with it the trees which sprung up over the years either by nature or by design. Great stuff!! The creek mouth is now open to all water craft to navigate safely. On Saturday 19 January we held another Kids Fishing Classic organized by the Club Fishing Events Coordinator Dan Dale. The day was a huge success with over 30 families from far afield joining in the fun. The major prizes were again taken out by out-of-towners but local girl Acaciah Collinson did pick one of the 4 prizes which were presented by the competition sponsors, Nick Dametto, MP, Member for Hinchinbrook, Cr Margie Ryder, Councillor for Division 1, Kim Love from GKC Shed Erectors and a representative from RADCA. We sincerely thank the kind sponsors for their contributions, Dan Dale for organizing the event, Graham, Di, Kim and May Dale for helping out with the free sausage sizzle, handing out drinks and lollies etc. We very warmly welcome new members Darren and Booie Haggarty, Denni and Lemi Kral, Stephen Dale, Dina Soraggi, Sienna Dale and Zara Dale, Tom Mitchell, Jan Darling, Graeme and Irene Burns, Allan Robinson, Gwen Cooms, Clay Hutchinson and Chey Hinds. We trust you have a great time in your new club. I am sure you will all join me when I offer our congratulations to our young Club Members Mew Dale and Stephanie Pratt, both of whom have been accepted into University to pursue their chosen careers, Mew in Medicine and Stephanie in Education. We wish both of these lovely young ladies all our very best in their endeavours. Mew is the eldest daughter of Mon and Dan Dale and Stephanie is the eldest daughter of Kirstie and Robert Pratt. Since my ramblings in November last, we have had some of our Members on the sick list including Dickie, Condo, Garry Luff, Dan Dale, myself and Richard Pickering. Richard Pratt also had an argument with a sizeable angle grinder, his thumb came off second best. I am sorry if I missed any one else, but these are the Members I have been made aware of over the past few months. We wish you all a speedy recovery and Richard old Mate, our thoughts and prayers are with you and Babz. We have started to advertise the Club Fun Weekend Away to Lucinda from 24 to 26 May early as the Wanderers Resort and Resort in Lucinda has advised they are getting a lot of early bookings for May. The nomination sheet and all the information you need is on the board at The Landing so please get your name down and BOOK YOUR OWN unit/caravan/tent site direct to the Caravan Park. Be sure to tell them you are with the Club so we are all accommodated close together. This Weekend Away has, in the past, been a great weekend away. The Boat Licence Course arranged for Saturday 9 February was deferred by the course provider due to the then wet weather. Unfortunately, he had more pressing commitments in town which is quite understandable so he was forced to defer. The new date for the course is Saturday 16 March. If you wish to do this course please ring Di on 0427240472. Those who nominated for the February course have been advised of the new date. It seems we have some new celebrities within our Club following the recent wet. The Love Family and Robbo, Gwen and Darren all featured on TV and the Loves also in the Townsville Bulletin. Under different circumstances we are sure they would have enjoyed seeing themselves on the big screen. Thanks to all our Members who rallied during the wet to assist where necessary. I cannot name you all but you know who you are so please take this as the Club’s thanks for a job well done. Some of you more observant folk may have noticed that a large chunk of the walkway to the pontoon is not where it was intended. It broke away during the second big wash when Rollingstone Creek burst its banks and relocated down-stream just past The Landing. We very much appreciate the efforts of Adam Sawtell, Nick Truscott and Wayne Truscott who dragged the walkway from the water and out of harm’s way. Now we await either the Council or the State Government to inspect/repair/ replace/certify the structure. In the meantime, the pontoon and remaining walkway is out of bounds for obvious safety reasons. The Stinger Net copped a pasting from big logs and a huge tree root plus the pounding from the very rough seas so it was removed to Cairns for repairs. The whole beach was covered in debris and the net cannot be replaced until this debris is cleaned up hopefully by nature with a very high tide. For safety reasons the beach is closed for swimming until the net is reinstalled. Dan Dale, the Club’s Fishing Events Coordinator has put together a fabulous Barra Bash Fishing Competition over the weekend of 9 and 10 March. This is a Members Only closed Club event so there will be plenty of Barra ‘out there’ for all our enthusiasts. The event has been advertised on our Facebook page so read up on the rules etc and get yourselves ready. The prizes on offer will be worth the effort. P26
FLFaSC continued.
Vice-President Graham Milliken and his wife Therese have departed on a caravanning holiday around the country for several months. We wish them both a safe, carefree holiday and hope at the end they know where home-base is here in paradise. There will be no Dickie’s Fishing News this month but Richard the Turd assures me he will be back next month. Phew……....until next month……….Ninger
On checking our boat ramp at low tide of 0.8mtr found it to be seriously damaged from our weather event last week. It appears the ramp has been washed out from under, split and half dropped at least 40cm on one side. If you must use it be aware it looks as though the whole thing could break away and sink at any time. At high tide you cannot see any of the damage. SO PLEASE BE AWARE. By the time that you get this Rolly Rag I would have reported to both the State Member Nick Dametto and Townsville Council Margie Ryder. Di Thompson President…………..Fishermans Landing Fishing and Social Club inc UPDATE ON BOAT RAMP Engineers will be out to inspect the ramp early next week and will contact me asap to advise when and how our ramp will be repaired. I was told they can not give me a time frame until it has been surveyed to check the extent of the damage. Ours is not the only ramp to be damaged but they wish to repair it asap in case of further cyclonic weather. I will keep you all updated as reports come in. I was also advised the pontoon is definitely council concern and Cr Ryder is working to get that repaired as well.
G’day Rollingstone District, It was an early morning wake up call for some residents of Balgal during the recent monsoon event With water inundating several properties along Mystic and Armidale Avenues, turning the streets in to fast flowing creeks. Goughy and I apologise for startling some of you with our beeping horn and flashing lights at that ungodly hour of the morning but we needed to ensure you were all safe and well despite the new water views. Seeing Rollingstone Creek in all its glory was an amazing thing to witness. The amount of water pushing down towards the mouth was something that had to be seen to be believed. It was very pleasing to see everyone working together; The Rural Fire Service, SES, Lions Club, and other community members who assisted others during their time of need. This assistance in some respects is still ongoing. I won’t name everyone but you all know who you are and from a QPS perspective your contributions were and still are greatly appreciated. While Miss Alissa didn’t get wet like Goughy and I, she was in the office manning the phones answering questions and providing information on road conditions. Her little spiel of “The road isn’t open yet but happy to provide an update next hour or try the Traffic Info App or telephone 131940 for the less technological savvy” was helpful and appreciated. See, I’ve heard it that many times I can repeat it on demand! It was a bit of a shock to the system returning from my stint out at Camooweal. The temperature exceeded 40 degrees just about every single day of the 10 weeks I was away. Turns out I got home just in the knick of time as the roads were cut due to flooding shortly after I passed through. From 45 degrees to floods, it felt like I was in another country. I enjoyed my time away and it was a great experience, however I’m extremely happy to be home in this wonderful little part of Queensland called Rollingstone. We really do live in paradise. I don’t know whether Goughy was happy to see me or not, because the first thing he did when I arrived home was throw the on-call phone at me and said “That’s yours for 10 weeks!” Fair call I reckon. Goughy must have got a few call outs while I was away because he looked every bit of 60 years old! For those of you who don’t know Goughy is away for a few weeks on Sick Leave. Apparently he broke one of his nails and needed emergency surgery. From all reports the surgery was a success and his nail is healing well…… All jokes aside, it was his hand and we wish Goughy a speedy recovery. Just remember the Police Station counter is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00am – 3:30pm. Stay safe and keep up the unbelievable community spirit you have all shown through this remarkably difficult period. Sutto

Rollingstone & District Seniors QUACK Quack, quack, oops yep that deluge has gone but not forgotten by many. Some of the most unexpected homes have seen problems, not just the ones we hear about in Townsville. We have some in our own area that have been hit with damages totally unexpected, some are little, some are large so if you escaped unharmed then be so very thankful. The Senior & Districts AGM had to be postponed until 27th February due to the weather. There are no further plans ahead until we have our new committee voted in. I reiterate that if you are at all considering joining the committee, please do. It takes up little of your time, 12 meetings a year and several events we have to plan for. I know I can talk for the committee members of 2018 that we all have great pride in our area and enjoyed our time contributing to making it a fun place to be. Our numbers fluctuate but we expect that, some leave for different pastures but also some move in and they are the ones we want to welcome, we need new blood with new ideas and more oomph. Think about it please. . Both Indoor bowls have started up along with the board games so there is plenty to do again. Just have to get over this heat once more. We have been asked by some dietetic students if they could come out and explain and show what they can do. We have arranged for them to come out 11.30am on Wednesday 6th March. This could be extremely interesting and all should endeavour to come along where possible. Until next time, thankyou for putting up with me this past year, sit back in the air con, have a coldie and just enjoy living in paradise. Ciao‌...Gaye We have had the following letter sent to us and have booked these dietetic students to come out to explain all to us after bowls on Wednesday 6th March. We certainly think this could be of good interest to many of us. Hope to see a good number of people there. Our names are Alyssa Koenen and Sheridan Hardie and we are fourth year dietetic students from the Queensland University of Technology doing our community nutrition placement with Vivienne Salu, dietitian at Active Nutrition. Our project is a scoping exercise to assess the need for Community Kitchens in Townsville. A Community Kitchen is a group of 6-8 people who meet on a regular basis to plan, cook and share nutritious, affordable meals. They aim to connect people from all different walks of life to build friendships, develop cooking and personal life skills to empower and improve selfesteem and confidence. A Community Kitchen is not a handout as members share the cost of ingredients. The entire group is actively involved throughout the planning, shopping, cooking, and cleaning to ensure dignity and equality within the kitchen. Below is a video that provides a snapshot into a Community Kitchen. http://communitykitchens.org.au/. Warm regards‌...Alyssa and Sheridan, on behalf of Vivienne Salu

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc. Welcome to 2019 The winners of our 2018 Christmas Raffle were; 1st Prize: Geoff Cooke and 2nd Prize: Margaret Harney, both Local Winners. Our first activity was Australia Day and even though the numbers were down, those who attended really enjoyed themselves. Councillor Margie Ryder got into the swing of things and involved herself in all the games. She really puts her utmost in supporting our community. Well done to all those award recipients especially our 2 Lions – Bruce Smallbom and Kerrie Cochrane. The Lions as usual put on a tasty brunch and it was well received. Shortly after Australia Day the heavens opened up and I don’t think we saw the sun for 15 days. All up and down the coast and inland was dumped a year’s worth of rain causing flooding and devastation in its path. Rollingstone was not forgotten, the Rolly Creek broke its banks causing devastation right through Mystic Sands. Mystic Avenue and Armidale were the worst streets hit and some houses had to be evacuated because of the rising storm water. Police, SES, Rural Fires and Lions were fantastic. The City Council sent four truckloads full of sandbags out to Rollingstone, these were unfortunately a tad too late. At one point in the Lions Den I had 6 Police Officers from the Townsville Branch, Rural Fire Reps from Townsville, the Gold Coast and our locals, Member of Qld Health, TCC Environmental personnel, with Margie Ryder on a phone link. We were all heavily in consultation organising the clean-up. During the day Mavis Hagan and Judiana Holt prepared a monstrous stew, fried bread and cakes to feed everyone involved in the clean-up and for anyone else that dropped into the Lions Den. These 2 Ladies prepared this meal without being asked. What marvellous people we have in this community (both Kiwis). Jodi-Lee, Mavis’s daughter approached me and volunteered to clean houses. She put on Facebook an urgent request for likeminded helpers. We soon had a team with mops and squeegees to start work. They cleaned houses on Mystic Avenue, then reported back ready for other jobs. Once again members of this community banded together to help each other. Lions have been working tirelessly in Townsville that was totally devasted by the flood waters. Clubs set up a kitchen at Reid Park and over the clean up period produced 11,000 meals for the Volunteers. I visited Bluewater Community Centre to offer our assistance and register with the North Queensland Disaster Relief Program. The amount of support that Bluewater had received from various food and clothing outlets was amazing. Once again another small community like ours has banded together to help each other. Lions Australia plus Lions North Queensland have donated a heap of money to be distributed by way of vouchers to those in need. This is designed to also rejuvenate the retail outlets. The Pineapple Festival Committee has had our second meeting, this ensures that all bases are covered leading up to the biggest event on our calendar. It is with great sadness that we lost a very vibrant member – Lion Michael Urquhart, who passed away on 1 February 2019, whilst on holiday in Brisbane. We are having a Remembrance Service at the Den on Sunday 10 March at 10.30am. Those who knew Michael, both from Townsville and here will be in attendance. A very sad time for our club. Our prayers and thoughts go to Michelle, Michael’s partner, who is also a Lion. We have also got Lion Bruce Urquhart (no relation) in the Mater Hospital. He is steadily recovering from his operation. Until next time, Stay Safe………Dowie
PARCEL COLLECTION SERVICE If anyone in the community would like a parcel picked up in Townsville and delivered to your door on the day our Community Bus goes into town (weekly on Thursdays), call Chris (855), organise it with her and it will be done.
COST is $5.

Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell Christmas came and went, we experienced some pretty extreme weather and now here we are with the second year of the month nearly over!! Paluma villagers are mourning the death of one of their most loved and respected residents, Roy Mackay who passed away peacefully on 12 February at Regis Aged Care facility in Townsville. He was aged 90. Roy, most of you will remember, wrote the monthly Nature Notes article for Rollingstone Rag. He was a remarkable man who led an adventurous and remarkable life. As a teenager in the 1940’s Roy kept snakes and began a reptile club which after many years and many name changes, became the Australian Herpetological Society. He searched for Taipans in North Queensland to extract their venom in the quest for an anti-venom. Leaving school, he trained as a taxidermist at the Australian National Museum. Later he went to PNG with his wife and children, where he worked for 23 years, specializing as collector and preparator of wildlife specimens for the Port Moresby Museum. He then became director of the Baiyer River Bird of Paradise Breeding Sanctuary. Roy was a published author on PNG native culture, orchids and early European exploitation of resources. Upon retirement, Roy came to Paluma, where he was an active member of the community. A kind, patient and tolerant man, he was always generous with his time and with his sharing of knowledge, eager to instill in people an awareness of, and a love for, their natural environment…...He will be sadly missed. Paluma residents are used to receiving heavy rains during the Monsoon months but the rainfall over the last week of January, up to 9 February was relentless. 2521 mm fell in that period. Water seeped into the ground levels of many homes or entered the roof space but our woes were little compared with the catastrophic flooding suffered in many areas. Our hearts go out to those whose houses and businesses were flooded and who have lost irreplaceable personal items. The Range Road was closed on 30 January due to several big land slips and huge rocks on the road. For 9 days Paluma was isolated: the other access road, Hervey’s Range Road was also closed due to land slips. The hazardous work of clearing and removing rocks and earth still goes on (at the time of writing) but the village is now accessible to local traffic only, for an hour in the morning and again between 4.30 and 5.30 in the afternoon. The isolation was enjoyed by some residents however a few smokers became anxious when cigarette supplies ran out. Someone managed to procure tobacco so the situation was saved. Now people are busy restoring their rain-battered gardens and mowing the rampant lawns. The History display in the Community Hall is at present closed and will remain so until further notice, however it is hoped all will be back as usual early in March……..Colwyn Campbell.
With thanks to ANNIE and DEB CALDER for kick-starting this project, the Rollingstone Community Association managed to organise the distribution of a pallet load of foodstuffs to go out to Richmond for those needing sustenance so badly. This was achieved through magnificent support and gestures from COLIN PACE, SANDRA ELTON (Deeragun Community Centre), Mr. BARRY PARKER, Manager, FREIGHTRITE TRANSPORT and FOOD RELIEF NQ and was collated by our Centre Manager, Chris. More “earth angels” for whom “thanks” are most inadequate, but I’m sure they know how we feel. We can now make our donation to BlazeAid for fencing to go towards rebuilding some lives and businesses in the West as well. AND, we’re donating $1000 towards the Townsville Toy Library to help them replace their complete losses due to inundation. These donations are all made on behalf of our local community. As Winston Churchill said: “Never, ever, ever, give in.............”
Op Shop Please be mindful, that while all donations are gratefully received, your goods need to be in reasonable condition.
We would like to give a big Thankyou to all who donate to the Op Shop. Without your donations, we would not be known far and wide. But please understand due to safety and hygiene we are unable to accept, sell or give away electrical items, any long-bladed knives, toys we can not clean and soiled clothes. Thank you once again for your support. From the women and gentleman who work there.
Please ask yourself “if it is not good enough to give to my best friend—is it good enough to give to the Op Shop?” Please be advised the Op Shop cannot accept: Electrical goods; large kives; bulky, chipboard or damaged furniture
