The outdoor gym at Fisherman’s Landing is open and ready to be used by locals and visitors alike. Funded and erected by the Townsville City Council under the W4Q (Works for Queensland Funding) the idea for an outdoor gym was originally the brainchild of the Rollingstone & District Community Centre. We are extremely happy the Council saw merit in the idea and worked with the Association of see this project achieved for the Community.

Friday morning exercise class with Benita making use of the new Gym equipment Judyana made use of it too!

Mrs Nina received recognition from Education Minister Grace at a recent function in Townsville. 29 years of service at Rollingstone school supporting students, staff and parents and many more years to come. Well done!!!

The Generator now has a new top hat to keep the rain out. The materials and labour to install the roof was generously donated by Gavin from GKC Sheds. The Association is very appreciative of Gavin’s work and generosity. Thank you Gavin and Kim

The Association’s AGM was held on Thursday 12 September. Attendance was low but enough to make a quorum. Both the meetings were short and sharp and all up over in less than 30 minutes. The Management Committee were re-elected unopposed. The Management Committee is again made up of President: Sue Von Wald, Vice President: Geoff Prytherch, Treasurer: Lynne Prytherch, Committee Members: Ian Dow and Deb Calder. Hon. Secretary: yours truly. The AGM and General Meeting is a fantastic opportunity to have your say on how the facilities and activities are run over the 12 months period. Unfortunately Nicole’s offer of a Yoga class on Mondays was not very well patronised, with only 2 bookings received. I am sure the offer is still on the table should you wish to contact Nicole again and book through her Facebook page. Margaret the Vet thanks everyone for coming to see her as early as possible this September. If everyone is attended to as quickly as possible at the hall, it opens Margaret’s time up to see other clients who cannot make it to the Hall. Thank you all. Margaret’s next visit is Thursday 17 October at 9am. What another wonderful success for the Pineapple Festival Committee, with a great turn out from the Community and from afar. From all reports everyone had a lovely day and even the weather was with us. The grounds looked a treat, thanks to Dowie’s band of tireless workers; the Tea Room was popular selling out of sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls. The Op Shop did a roaring trade, now needing to replenish their shelves. We held a bookstall this year with books going for $1 and fifty cents. The kids didn’t miss out either, wearing off all the treats on the jumping castle, Polly’s Craft sand art and Timmy the Train taking families on a jaunt around the back of the field. Live vocal artists, tractor pulls, field games, baking competition, market stalls with the day ending with the famous Pineapple de-topping competition. Big congratulations to the Pineapple Festival Committee – your year-long commitment and hard work certainly has paid off. Well done. Thanks to Matt Fiddes School of Martial Arts for our up and coming School Holiday Activity on 3 October starting at 10am. There has been a wonderful response to the call for Expressions of Interest from the Community. On the back of School Holiday Activity success, plans will be made to provide Martial Arts classes up here in Rollingstone. We are planning a Carboot sale for 26 October under the trees in Pace Park. Please book you space with Mark on 47707855. In conjunction with the Carboot sale our resident local artists are holding an Art Exhibition, the Opening Night is happening on Friday 25 October, with nibblies, a complimentary glass of bubbly; the Lions running a Bar, tea and coffee will also be available. The Exhibition will remain open for the weekend from 9am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday. An auction will be held on the Friday night with the Association’s share of the proceeds being donated to the Ronald MacDonald Foundation – Townsville. The Garden Angels worked very hard in the gardens again this month with Steve, Marg, Judyana, Deb and Bob and everyone else (I may have omitted) have given up their time and energy. The mulch has been dispersed through the gardens. A great job done – and a big thank you from us all. Come along to Goughy’s retirement gathering on Saturday 16 November, starting at 12pm, this is the perfect opportunity to wish the Gough Family well. As always - Keep yourself safe…………. You are the only one who can!!!……………….. Cheers Chris P4

Our AGM was held during September and we managed a quorum – just. Shame that so few in the community are interested in what we do/provide, until it affects themselves, of course. However, I guess it means we’re doing the right and good thing and that there’ll be no complaints……. about anything!! Oh yes, and the old Committee has been returned because absolutely no-one else seems interested in helping to run the show. However, all else seems to be running smoothly. Just advising our present direction – and if you are a financial member and would like to read the minutes and President’s report, just call Chris or Mark and have them emailed out, otherwise you’ll need to go into the RTC to read them. We have several projects in the pipeline: still working on up-grading the Oval, putting in place the Railway Display (work starts directly after the Pineapple Festival this year), building a new Op Shop, buying a new Bus, establishing the Bush Tucker Garden upgrading the Security System (CCTV cameras), and the list goes on. They’re mostly all big-ticket items, so finance is the main stumbling block but we’ll continue pursuing our dreams. Another wonderful Rollingstone Pineapple Festival. Weather superb and the outcome of the event due to much hard work was that it was a “BIG SUCCESS”. I would like to publicly acknowledge Ian Dow, Rhonda Schwarz, Chris Richardson, John Muller, John Holliday, Sue Thompson, Greg Grevsmuhl, Margie Ryder, Chris Martin and Mark Eberle, for their magnificent contributions. You are all treasures of immense proportions and I’ve heard nothing but compliments and praise for your efforts. Great work, Pineapple Festival Team. To the women who helped me in our Tea Room, I would like to offer them my undying gratitude. Without them, it would never happen and this year our little venture will contribute $870 to the Pineapple Festival coffers. My heart goes out to: Carol Phillips, Joanie Ruddick, Vanda Simmons, Lynne Prytherch, Michelle Rossiter and Ros Green - thank you, ladies, from the bottom of my heart. Oh, and to my Geordie as well! And I would also like to sincerely thank Normie and Susan (BP Servo) for their contribution of Pies and Sausage Rolls to our Tea Room – which we sold out; and to our Chrissie’s Mum (Mrs. Gwen Smith) for her contribution of Scones on which we put Pineapple Jam made by Angie Barr. All beautiful food and very much appreciated. There is a young man in our community who is doing an IT course at University (JCU). He is most “tech-savvy” and should you need assistance, particularly in an emergency, this young man is your “go-to guy” providing he’s available. If you need help computer-wise, just call the RTC and either Chris or Mark will give you his contact to help you sort out most of your problems to do with your computer and its system.

Put a packet of gingernuts into a bowl and pour over one orange jelly. When set put whipped cream on top and sprinkle over some chocolate chips. So easy, the ginger/ jelly/layer ends up resembling a gingery sponge. Using butternut biscuits microwave for 20 seconds to make them soft. Press into the base of a muffin tin 1 x packet of cream cheese and lemon butter to taste. Whip together with hand help mixer. Spoon mixture into butternut biscuit bases. Refrigerate until set. Easy lemon cheesecakes. Also works for mini Caramel Tarts. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

Rollingstone State School Mungalli Madness! – Rolly’s Year 4/5/6 Camp What a blast! Who knew land sliding could be so much fun? I do, because I got to experience the World’s best land slide. If not the Worlds, then definitely the best! This week, I got to go on the Rollingstone State School Year 4-6 school camp. The landslide was so great; it made me feel like I could go as fast as a race car. I felt my hair blow and the wind whistle in my ears as I hurtled down, before the gigantic splash at the end. I want to go back because it was so much fun. J Shelby The obstacle course was so much fun! It was all about teamwork and communication. You have to work as part of a team to be able to complete the course. The last element is a really muddy crawl through red mud and dirt and then onto a flying fox that ended in a dam. It was so great! Liam Our hearts pumped as we saw a big dam and the materials we were going to use. All of us raced over and started building raft. You should have seen the madness! We were in the water before you could say ‘Just send it’. Saxon We had an awesome time! We went through many different obstacle courses and even on a platypus walk down at the billabong. At night time we walked down this huge, steep, slippery hill. Luckily, no one got hurt. When we got to the bottom of the hill there was a ginormous waterfall and you could feel little bits of water splashing on your face. My absolute favourite activity was the low ropes. They were amazing as it made me feel like a ninja, climbing from rope to rope. Mikaela We walked out of the bus, you could hear the soothing sound of water spraying down rocks, creating a beautiful place, called Mungalli Falls. We had a blast there, doing all our awesome activities with our camp leaders Nae Nae and Billy. In our spare time we went and swam in the upper rapids. It was relaxing laying down in the water against a couple of rocks while the current was pushing water past you. We sat and played there for a couple of hours in the soothing water and the warm sun. Alkira

On behalf of Rollingstone State School, a very special thank you to Chris Crow and team from the Rollingstone Big 4 for kindly donating the bus for our Mungalli Falls camp. This camp was by far the best camp we have ever gone on and we truly appreciate your support. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff and volunteers that accompanied us on our great adventure.

Rollingstone needs an ambulance station During question time in parliament last month, I asked Ambulance Services Minister Dr Steven Miles if he would consider placing an ambulance station in Rollingstone to ensure motorists and residents in this area are within close proximity to timely emergency and first-response care when required. Right now we have a situation where there is a 90km stretch of the Bruce Highway without an ambulance station, leaving residents who require assistance in this area in a potentially precarious situation should they require an ambulance from either Ingham or Townsville. Dr Miles responded to my question saying that “Queensland Ambulance Service determines where to locate new stations based on demand, population and proximity to other stations, so there are a wide range of criteria they take into account. He also said he was willing to have the ambulance commissioner sit down with me to look at demand and response times for Rollingstone and other townships within Hinchinbrook, so I can see the data QAS is using when making those decisions. While I no doubt welcome this opportunity to better understand the framework surrounding response times and how ambulances are allocated, I know just how much residents at Rollingstone and surrounding areas would appreciate having a station nearby. In life or death matters, seconds matter. The faster paramedics can respond to a patient in urgent need of treatment, the better the odds are for that person’s life being saved.

What a fun morning the kids had celebrating the reopening of the kids playground. They had lots of activities to do. Some beautiful colouring pages were completed as well. Congratulations to Bodhi Kelly on his closest guess ( 82) on how many lollies in the jar. There were 88!! All the kids received prizes after completing their challenging activities throughout the morning. It was a fabulous morning with the kids followed by a Sausage Sizzle with Chef Noel. Thank you Cr Margie Ryder, TCC and Works 4 Qld for the upgrade and to make the morning possible for the kids. The community meeting with Cr Ryder & Member for Hinchinbrook Nick Dametto MP had an outstanding attendance. Thank you to all those who came along to discuss issues and ideas for the community. Sometimes we don’t get the answer that we want, but we can certainly continue to keep trying to achieve a positive outcome!! Both Cr Ryder and Nick Dametto would like to see these community meetings happen every three months, so we will plan another meeting for early December. Eddie is looking forward to seeing the new irrigation system that has been completed in Rouse Harvey Park by Townsville City Council. A flyer will be sent out very soon inviting you to come along to a gathering/celebration. We can then thank Eddie for all the years of hard work and persistence keeping the park in such immaculate condition and also to thank Cr Margie Ryder, TCC and Works for Qld for supporting the upgrade to the park. Thanks Mick and Deb for all the buckets of shallots & the yummy mandarines to giveaway at the community stall. They were very popular and managed to disappear very quickly each day. If you did manage to grab some we hope you enjoyed them. I would also like to thank Don, Annie, Rudi, Debbie, Rod, Helen and Noel for your help each month delivering the Rolly Rag to all residents in Toomulla. Very much appreciated. Happy Birthday to those people celebrating in October … Enjoy. Cheers, Rhonda.

Rollingstone & District Seniors Woo hoo another pineapple Festival bites the dust. A great day with plenty of stalls and the seniors stall once again was a resounding success. The Seniors gave $500 towards the costs of the prizes given out, this benefits the community as a whole. A huge thankyou to the few who supplied items for the stall, a very poor outcome this year for the amount of people on the books but those who gave and you know who you are, well done, we did very well. A massive thankyou to President Joh for all the work he puts in behind the scenes, he works tirelessly for our community. He has a merry band of folk who help him out so thanks to them also. His total commitment for the Seniors is shown in the community aid that we have been able to give this year including the success of this year’s cancer councils biggest morning tea with a record donation made. All this hard work pays off by allowing us to contribute more to the community, like the Troupies for example. We have a day/overnight trip to Magnetic Island coming up, 15 thOctober. If enough interested in the bus going then it will leave at 7.30am due to road works for the 9am ferry. Morning tea and then a roast lunch is arranged and then a tourist trip around the island. They will have you back to the ferry by 5pm but you can return home earlier as desired. Accommodation to stay overnight is $110 twin share. Melbourne cup day 5th November, bring a plate and join the fun at the community hall 1pm. Big TV is arranged. November 15th PCYC and Ingham Seniors to come here, more later. November 17th Activities Day put on by the Lions. More later. December 17th (tentative) xmas party. More later. That’s all folks . Ciao

Queensland Government media release The Palaszczuk Government wants to hear from Queenslanders on the future of the state ’s child protection legislation – especially children and young people who ’ve been in care. Minister for Child Safety Di Farmer has today released a consultation paper that will help guide the next stage of amendments to the Child Protection Act 1999. “Every Queensland child deserves the same hope and opportunity as the next one, ” she said. “A recent report from the CREATE Foundation showed that while 93% of children and young people in care feel safe and secure in their current placement, about a third felt they didn ’t have much of a say in decisions made about their placements. “We’re asking Queenslanders to tell us how you think we can better recognise and protect the rights of children, how we can better regulate the environments children are placed in when they ’re in care, and importantly how we can strengthen the voices of children in decision making. ” The three areas of legislative reform being considered are: •

Reinforcing children’s rights in the legislative framework

Strengthening children’s voices in decisions that affect them

Reshaping the regulation of care

Ms Farmer said some different options for reform were outlined in the consultation paper, and people could make written submissions or fill out an online survey. “We especially want to hear from children and young people with care experience, as well as their families, carers, service providers and staff,” she said. “We also want to hear from Queenslanders who haven ’t had experiences of care themselves – child protection is everyone’s responsibility, and so everyone is invited to have their say on this important legislation. “Your submission doesn’t have to be long or very formal – write us a letter or send some dot points if that ’s easier. The most important thing is that we hear from you. “We will also proactively reach out to key stakeholder groups, including those representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young people in care, and foster and kinship carers, to hear their views. ” Ms Farmer said the review was part of the Palaszczuk Government ’s election commitment to continue the 10 year child safety reform agenda that arose from the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry, as well as the recommendations of the Queensland Family and Child Commission ’s Foster Care Review report, and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The consultation paper is available on the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women website. Public comment is available through Get Involved and the Youth e -Hub. For further information about the upcoming stakeholder sessions and community forums visit the Department of Child Safety Youth and Women website. P15

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello Members and welcome. The big Club event in August was the End of Month Club BBQ combined AGM. A record of 66 members attended the AGM and no, not one was coerced, bullied or otherwise made to feel that they had to join the committee. So, your new committee for the next 12 months is Di Thompson (President, Acting Treasurer, and Events Co-ordinator), Graham Milliken (Vice President & Markets Co-ordinator), Neil Thompson (Secretary & Club Scribe for the Rolly Rag), Dickie Charleston(Stingnet), Dan Dale(Fishing Events Co-ordinator), Garry Luff, Mon Dale, Ron Condren (Condo) General Committee. This is a smaller committee than previously but we believe quite functional. We do however need a Club Treasurer so if you are interested… Club Fishing Champions for 2018-2019 were awarded on the night. Peter Hall snatched the Bruce Woolard Memorial Trophy with 3370 points, 47 fish caught, 10 different species and a total weight of 86.89kg. The junior Trophy went to Cameron Love with a score of 674.4 points, 11 fish caught, 4 different species, and a total weight of 16.72kg. The Most Meritorious Fish Caught for the year award went to another of our juniors, Hunter Trusscott for a 18.42kg Mackeral. Congratulations to you all. The Club Monthly Fishing Competition winners were Senior Wayne Trusscott, who has hardly missed a The Club Monthly Fishing Competition winners were Senior Wayne Trusscott, who has hardly missed a day out on the water since he joined the club and the Junior prize went to Eden Trusscott, there was no Mystery prize. Well done winners.

The next event on our Social Calender is the Annual Member for Hinchinbrook Inter Club Challenge presentation night at the Landing on SATURDAY 28th SEPTEMBER from 5.00pm to 9.30pm. This event replaces the normal End of Month BBQ and Dickie and the girls have graciously extended our normal BBQ hours due to this special Event. Mr. Nick Dametto MP, sponsors our prizes for this event and will be in attendance to present them. This promises to be a top night open to Club members (Toomulla & Fishermans Landing) and their guests only, no visitors so we hope you can all attend.

On Saturday 12 October we are once again conducting the very popular Kids Fishing Classic which is open to all accompanied children 16 years and under. Bring the kids to enjoy a great morning fishing followed by a free sausage sizzle, and the presentation of great prizes and other goodies, no child leaves empty handed. We wish to thank our sponsors Townsville City Council, RADCA, Nick Dametto M.P., Councillor Margie Ryder and of course Fishermans Landing Fishing and Social Club inc. This is an event our club looks forward to staging, usually twice a year, weather permitting, love getting those young families out from town. Cancel all other commitments and keep Friday 25th October to Sunday 27th October free so you may attend the club Fun weekend away to Lucinda. Always a great trip away for singles and families. Subsidized Pub meal Friday night, free BBQ Saturday night, plus breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Just supply your own nibbles and drinks and your accommodation costs be it tent site, powered or unpowered, or hire a cabin. Further details will be emailed to all members closer to the date. Friday 29th November we will be back to normal with our last Club BBQ for the year at the Landing. We are hoping to have a guest speaker attend this BBQ, more details when Di gets confirmation. Don’t forget our NEW YEARS EVE PARTY will once again be held at the Mystic Sands Golf Club. The past 2 years it has been memorable. This will also replace the December End of month BBQ, again full details will be emailed to every member closer to the date so KEEP CHECKING YOUR EMAILS!! Hopefully I will be able to attach a few special photos this article, May Dale is our new club photographer, so lets hope I can do her P21 justice, plus I type this on my trusty tablet while sitting beside a beautiful creek …mmmm no phone contact now… no I’m not home P21 I’m here, and “here” changes daily…okay time for a dip in the creek…until next month Ninger P21

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day ALL, Every year our FATHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS are at Ken Turner’s place and once again it was a fantastic fun night. We played mini golf on Ken’s 9 hole mini course; it was great. Lots of laughter and ribbing for hole in ones and near misses. 5 of us scored 20 for the course, some a few more then along came Tom Ruddick and scored 18. SMART ALEC Sure did not let us forget. Those who played had lots of fun. Others played ‘SAGGY BALLS’. We could hear much laughter coming from that area. They were certainly having a good time. Ken’s chimes garden was well commented on. Ken has made 65 chimes and the garden looks great. Terri won the Lound’s seafood raffle, and was very excited. GOOD ON YA TERRI. Thanks to Linda for organising Celebrity Heads again this year; such good fun, it was great and again lots of laughter. FOOD. It was a soup, stew and dessert night. The soup was yum, particularly the pumpkin soups; and as usual the stews were to die for. LUV A GOOD STEW. Then followed by the best of desserts. Every one deserves a medal. We ate too much again. Could not resist, smelt so yummy. We had approximately 50 members attend and visitors who all joined in. Geoff Ivett was given the honour of cutting the FATHER’S DAY CAKE. Thanks Geoff. Nice cake too. We all sat in a circle around the fire laughed and chatted, it is really nice to have a talk. Our next BBQ will be at the hall 13th October at 5.30 pm. Looking forward to seeing everybody. Visitors are always welcome, meals are 10 dollars per person and children under 12 are free. Members are always free. Your Committee Members wish you all good health and stay well. Kindest regards from your Committee.

BABZ AQUA GROUP 2019/2020 SEASON TUESDAY OCTOBER 8TH at 9.30am is our first day back into our water exercise programme and all levels of fitness are welcome. No experience necessary as we all encourage each other to participate in an atmosphere of enjoyment and fun on Tuesdays and Fridays weekly. The venue is the stunning resort pool at the Rollingstone Beach Front Resort. The Resort staff request that you stop in front of the office, honk the horn and move forward to the boom gate. Please have patience while the staff attend to their visitors and office duties, they will aim to let you in as quickly as possible. Remember, boom gate must come down between vehicles. Car pooling where possible will make it easier for the staff as well.

Parking for all vehicles will be located in the jumping pillow area. The cafe can be open on Friday mornings until 11am as the park becomes busier. Coffee is delicious, service is excelllent, a great spot for an after exercise chat! Our programme will commence week 1 with noodles/woggles, so if you have one, bring it along. We always have some spares to loan. $2.50 payable at the pool, a water bottle, hat and a smile is all you need.

Gidday Rollingstone This is the Coppers Log that I’ve been thinking about for a long time. It’s the one that I’ve looked forward to writing but at the same time, not so much. I knew it was coming and I thought for a while, that I might take a few extra months to get my thoughts together - but then the opportunity presented itself for me to bring everything forward - and as they say in the classics, ‘It is, what it is’… or is it ‘The rest is history’… or maybe ‘Take the money and run’… what about ‘Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’??? Anyway, by the time you read this I’ll be on holidays for somewhere from 9 to 12 months before I formally retire in September 2020. There’ll be a few new faces stepping up into my job until they advertise it and fill it next year but until then… with both relief and some degree of sadness, I’m calling it quits. I’ve had a great time working for you lot – a little over 16 years (not quite half my career but pretty close), plenty of laughs, plenty of tears, lots of hard work, stacks of friends and memories – in fact I’ve probably got a war story for just about every one of you. I know I’ve caused some grief for some – having to give some fairly direct advice, delivering bad news, making sure you did what you HAVE TO do and laying down the law … basically just having to do my job. It can really suck sometimes when you don’t like what you hear or you don’t get your own way because “that old fart Sergeant was right there” or “he was throwing his weight around again” or “he just thinks he knows better”. Trust me, I never got a giggle out of any of it either. If you were growled at, it was probably because you could have been given a ticket. If you were told to stop acting a certain way, you may very well have ended up being arrested. If you were given some bad news – I’m sorry - bad news doesn’t get better or easier just because you don’t want to hear it. But for the most part, I’ve tried to help. When I signed up with the Coppers in 1982, my Dad told me that if could make just one person breathe a little easier because of what I did, then I was doing OK and to be happy with that. I’d like to think that maybe I might have been able to do that here – and if I have, then I owe you a huge thank you for letting me be part of your life. I’ve loved my job… but it was a balancing act – between policing a small community, making friends, hoping people have enough respect to NOT screw up in front of me, raising a family, giving advice, kicking a few backsides when I had to, trying to help without getting in the way of your life. I’ve had days that I wish I could have over and over again… and other ones that I wish I could trade out and stop remembering. Now I owe my time to Al, Poppy, Dan and Ellie and my grandkids. And even though they’ve had the courtesy to not ask, they’ve shared every second of my time with you. They’ve picked me up, propped me up, dusted me off and sometimes, (what you might not have realised) the only reason I’ve gone back out the door is because one of them or both of them have been behind me, telling me I could do it. Along with everything else they do – school, work, volunteering… - my career has been their life as well. Of course, the reality of all my soon to be ‘spare time’ isn’t lost on the blonde or the terrorist. They’ve wasted no time in preparing a list of chores, expectations and ultimatums (yes, you heard me right) that need to be addressed as soon as the police boots hit the floor for the last time. So, let me say ‘thank you’ to all of you for being part of the fabric of my life. I’ll see you around. Goughy Thank heavens we’re NOT saying “goodbye” to Sgt. Gough and his family. I, personally, hate “goodbyes” and as one gets older, one seems surrounded by them; but this time, as Brad’s family isn’t old, we’re fortunate enough to still be able to enjoy their company and presence. Brad has been a large part of our lives for a long time now, and we were very lucky to have gotten someone like him to fill the local QPS position at that time. As well, we’ve had him around permanently and that in itself is most comforting along with the fact it encourages a feeling of security within the community. Not that long after arriving, he was joined by Allison and a little later again by Poppy. That feeling of “belonging” by this community became a reality when his family status also became a reality and we had not only a Protector in our midst but that he was a Dad as well. I have no doubt most of us felt contented and reassured by Brad’s presence. A big man in stature and in manner which has counted for so much in keeping our community within the bounds of decency and safety. Thanks to Brad, we don’t have much of a “criminal” history out this way! He has a great sense of humour, a wonderful way with words, and heaps of wisdom which makes for a pervading sense of integrity. He will be greatly missed – and the hole he leaves in the community will be even more obvious after a succession of temporary “locums”. Thank you Brad, Allison and Poppy for all your contributions to our lifestyle. We have been truly blessed to have you in our lives. No doubt everyone will join me in wishing you all GOOD HEALTH and GREAT HAPPINESS in the future and THANKS, Brad, from the bottom of our collective hearts. P 24

AGE FRIENDLY TRANSPORT RESEARCH Project Title: Understanding aging Queenslanders’ travel behaviours and their use of new and transport-related technologies Research Objective: The main objective of this research is to better understand the travel behaviour of Queenslanders over 65, including the relationship between older Queenslanders’ travel behaviour and their use of new technologies. The first portion of the focus group will investigate participants’ preferred transport modes, and how they perceive or experience alternatives to driving in private vehicles. The second portion of the focus group will explore participants’ access to and use of different types of technology, and how they use (or do not use) those technologies to interact with transportation and government services. These focus groups will provide policymakers and planners with valuable information as they attempt to build a more age-friendly transport system. Creating an age-friendly transport system in Queensland will require an understanding of the current travel behaviours of aging Queenslanders and a more thorough knowledge of how they use technology to access transport services and information.

Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell Spring is well and truly here and love is in the air – among the bird population anyway. Many birds are already feeding babies and are eager for any extra fruit and seeds put out on food trays by Paluma residents. Meanwhile, at Birthday Creek the Golden Bower-bird is still delighting bird-watchers as he titivates his already well-decorated bower. Nearby, the Tooth-billed Bower-bird keeps refreshing his dance-floor of upturned leaves while giving an amazing concert performance for all who will stop to listen. Some of you may have read on the Paluma website, of the bower constructed by a Satin Bower-bird in the garden of a resident here. She observed that none of the blue items in the bower were natural: all were bright blue manufactured things – biro tops, sweet wrappers, clothes pegs, bottle-tops and the like. It gives pause for thought! Evidently, these treasures are much sought after, as males regularly plunder one-another’s bowers. Watching the antics of these birds is like seeing an avian version of Home and Away. Not to be outdone, male turkeys are developing voluptuous yellow wattles which hang around the neck in fat coils. In the village gardens they are eying off mulch piles and raking leaves as they plan their nesting mounds and we pray that they don’t uproot our Hippeastrum bulbs which should, in a few weeks, be ablaze with colour throughout Paluma. A further reminder that Spring is here, was the recent sighting one early evening, of a 2.5 metre python straddling the Range Road. Snakes will soon be on the courtship prowl, so be wary of where you walk! If you are a gardener, make sure to give a few thrusts with a rake to flush out any snoozing snakes before you start work in the area. Both environmental schools have been busy over this last term, with children from all over North Queensland and as far away as Cloncurry, coming to spend a few days experiencing the rainforest environment. Some are able to enjoy the extra adventures of doing the High Ropes course and kayaking on Lake Paluma. It is always satisfying to see these young people here and to hear their happy chatter as they explore the village. Recently the Community Hall was filled with sewing machines as a group of very industrious ladies, “Blankets of Love”, sewed the weekend away. These generous, lovely ladies make beautiful quilts, many of which are given to sick children in hospital and to grieving parents to wrap around a dead infant. It is astonishing to see how much work these ladies achieve in a weekend. The hall is open (usually), every Tuesday between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm for the Paluma History display. Take a drive up ‘the hill’ to see us.

PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL PARADE

ROLLINGSTONE AND DISTRICT LEO CLUB

Hello again Rollingstone, and what a wonderful day we had for the 12 th Annual Pineapple Festival. And thank you to those who supported the Leos Stall where they sold their famous Hot Dogs as well as supporting the Festival Committee with the sale of water, soft drink and Fairy Floss. Well done Leos! Plenty of interest also in the Leos “Guess the number of lollies in the Lolly Jar”, with the winner and a guess of 456 lollies being Connor Stallman – son of School Principal Andrew. Well done Connor! Great to se the Rollingstone School Junior Leos also participating with the School in the Pineapple Festival Parade – what an excellent job they did decorating and riding their bikes down Mystic Avenue and then into the Pace Park Arena. Great Job Rolly School! As we start the run in towards end of year, Leos still have the following activities on their Calendar of Events:• Assisting with the Townsville City Council Community Planting Day on Sat 29 September at the Borton Street Esplanade. This activity also forms part of the LEOs contribution to the Environment as one of Leos International Causes. • Sunday 17 November – “Lions Lap the Map” Diabetes Healthy Activity Walk – Pace Park where the Leos will be hosting a “Colour Run” that afternoon in conjunction with the Diabetes Lifestyle event. All young people in our community are welcome to come and join in the fun with the Leos • They will also coordinate and help run with the School Junior Leos a School Colour Run during the last week of School • Conduct a collection of “Basic Toiletries” (soap, tooth paste and tooth brush etc) for forwarding to the Lions Birthing Mothers Project in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. • And most importantly, plan and hold their own Christmas Breakup on Saturday 30 th November. • So – if you are 12 years of age or more and would like to join our local Leo Club and have a lot of Fun – just give me a call. Open to all young people over 12 years of age who live in our local area. Shirley Muller Assistant Leo Advisor Mobile 0407 114687: Email jsrellum@yahoo.com.au
