NOTES FROM THE R.T.C If you have been in the Op Shop recently you would have seen the latest renovations. New shelving has been installed, providing more shelving space for stock and room to move. It was a team effort getting them installed. Thank you to Di for your wonderful observation and research and Bob, Margie, Trevor, Michael and Justene for dismantling and restoring the Op Shop to be even better and brighter. Many, many thanks to Di and Bob for mulching the gardens around the Community Centre, we continue to get so many wonderful comments about the gardens. Everyone who has assisted with the planting and maintenance of the gardens need to stand up and take a bow , the gardens are a credit to you all. A VERY BIG “THANK YOU” to the Seniors for your generous donation towards the running costs and maintenance of the Rollingstone Bus. Also Thank You to Mark at MVO for looking after our split Air-conditioning System on the weekend. It is amazing when you start jotting things down on paper, just how many people assist with the care and maintenance of the Community Centre and grounds. This contribution is starting to sound like a mutual admiration society. If I have missed any recent acts of kindness that have happened at the Centre, I say thank you too. There will be no Community Shorts this month so, I will try to do the best I can: Christmas Carols are on again! We will be missing Michael Blake this year , (and he will be missed) instead Carols will be hosted by Greg McCabe. Bring your merriment and voices on 7 December . Kids can have a photo with Santa and receive a small treat. Speedy recovery to all who have been under the weather recently including Judyana and Bob and to those celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other significant occasion, all the best wishes. The Community Centre will be closing over the Christmas period from ( close of business) 19th December and reopening January 5th. Contact details will be posted if assistance is required during this break time. We are calling for expressions of interest from local grandparents raising grandchildren, guardians and single parents of the district to see if you want to be part of a social group/ support group in and for the district. Call me on 47707855 to register you expressions of interest. Andrew Cripps MP Ph: 07 4776 1428 Member for Hinchinbrook Ingham Qld 4850 Fax:07 4776 3503 THE STRONGEST AND SMARTEST CHOICE The Newman Government has released its plan to address the $80 billion of debt left behind by Labor and free up funds to deliver job creating infrastructure and services. The final Strong Choices plan involves leasing some government-owned assets. We have listened to Queenslanders about retaining their stake in public assets. As a result, a decision has been made not to sell assets. Leasing some assets is the strongest and smartest choice because it will generate the funds needed to bring the State’s debt back under control, while ensuring Queenslanders retain ownership. Under our plan, the Queensland Government will write strict lease conditions to ensure the public interest is upheld. The leases will be for 50 years with an option to extend for a further 49 years. Importantly for us here in the North, the Queensland Government will also continue payments to our electricity companies to keep prices for regional consumers in line with prices in the south-east, under the uniform tariff policy. By reducing our debt we can free up funds to create jobs and build the infrastructure our State needs. The Queensland Government proposes to offer for lease: The Ports of Gladstone and Townsville (with the Mt Isa Rail line) Commercial water pipelines of SunWater Electricity generators Stanwell Corporation and CS Energy Ltd Electricity transmission and distribution companies Energex, Ergon and Powerlink The plan is expected to yield $37 billion, and those funds will be allocated as follows: $25 billion to reduce State debt from $80 billion to $55 billion, with annual interest payments reduced from $4 billion to $2.7 billion. $8.6 billion to establish the Strong Choices Future Investment Program - 11 separate funds, each dedicated to supporting infrastructure for economic growth, jobs and vibrancy of regional communities $3.4 billion in a dedicated fund to relieve cost of living pressure for Queenslanders Of course, none of these proposals will be implemented until the Newman Government has received a mandate for this methodical and disciplined plan at the next State election. Rollingstone & District Seniors Hi Everybody, Well it is up to me to again write this month’s notes as our Secretary is on a cruise with several of our members and another group is away in Tasmania. Hope the weather is being kind to them and they are all having a good time. Unfortunately I was away for the Seniors luncheon at Bluewater but understand the meal was good and everyone enjoyed themselves. We are now coming to the festive season so please everyone mark your calendars with all the dates for the upcoming events. We have the Seniors Christmas Luncheon being held on the 28th November. Not sure exactly where yet but are looking at the Golf Club so all members can sit back and relax without having to do any work during the meal. It will cost $10.00 per financial member and could you please start advising if you will be attending. We will need all names in by the 14th November for catering purposes. You may contact Cheryl at 47707027 or Rhonda 47707957 or Pam 47707607. The next Morning Melodies will be held on the 25th November – Khamal – and we are taking names now. There will be no market stall for November but please prepare goodies for our Christmas stall on the first week in December……………...Take care Cheryl

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News
G.Day All, It was a bit sad that our Cowboys were not in the finals; but due to having a lot of footy fans in our club it was decided to cancel our normal BBQ so members could stay at home and watch the Grand Final on TV in comfort. IT WAS A VERY GOOD GAME. Our clubs annual weekend away to Lucinda was fantastic, what a great mob to spend time with. The weather was really good and our Friday night BBQ at Wanderers was very social with lots of food and good friends. Saturday night we all went to the Lucinda Pubs smorgasbord and as usual it was tops as always. Fished Friday arvo in the river and Saturday we fished the Hinchinbrook Channel, returning in time for the smorgasbord. We can recommend going there. The crew on ROSIE had a great time as always, lots of laughing and yac-i-ing around, fun was had by all on board. We can’t wait till next year. Les Dallow won fish of the weekend and was quite excited with his prize. CONGRATULATIONS LES. PLEASE NOTE. Our December Christmas Party will be on the 14 th of December at the Community Hall. We had to change our party time date to fit in with other functions happening in the community. SANTA WILL BE THERE TOO. It will be really good to have another wonderful night to finish off another very successful year. DON’T MISS OUT see you all there. AN INVITATION... Join us at our monthly BBQs usually at the Community Hall 5pm start. You will meet new friends and catch up with old ones. $10 a head for non members, kids 12 years and under free when accompanied by an adult. BYO drinks. Next BBQ 2nd November. At the Community Hall. R.S.L. NEWS
REMEMBRANCE DAY- 11th November 2014! Our last commemorative service in 2014! A special one in that it is part of our remembering the 100th year anniversary of World War 1. However, it is always a special service as we remember all who have served our country to maintain our freedom. It is 10 years since our Memorial was officially opened on the 4 th of April 2004 and I do remember some of the ladies who were there, commenting on how pleased they were to see Womens’ Services recognised. Thus it is a time to remember all of those who have given their lives in different conflicts or who have served our country in some way. This year our service breaks from the traditional Bushy Parker Park, and we will hold the REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE at the Memorial at BALGAL BEACH. Service commences sharply at 10:40 am to coincide with the 11am 2 minutes silence. We will be supported by the RAAF, as has become traditional for our Remembrance Day services. They always look so smart in their uniforms and perform their duties admirably. So please be there if you can! We also hope to have the replica plaques laid around our RSL Memorial. Some people who had placed plaques on the Memorial Wall in Bushy Parker Park, were understandably upset that as our services were at the beach, they could no longer see the names of their relatives for whom they had provided a memorial plaque. This should be completed by Remembrance Day. Following the service, all are invited to the Mystic Sands Golf Club, home of the Rollingstone RSL, for snacks and refreshments. Last year we were able to chat with some of the service personnel and hear of their experiences, particularly in relation to Afghanistan. However, nowadays, they often are required back at work and can only stay for a short time, but it gives us an opportunity to thank them for their participation. CHRISTMAS PARTY- this year to be held on Saturday, 22nd November 2014. All RSL members and guests are most welcome. We have a number of people who support us with our raffles and Goose Club, and we would love them to join us if they can. They may even consider joining in 2015 as social members! We will probably follow our usual format. We meet from 6pm onwards, with dinner from 7pm. In the last couple of years we have found selling one raffle ticket with a number of draws throughout the evening has proved to be quite popular. It is an opportunity to meet fellow members in a convivial atmosphere. Please place 22nd November in your diary for our Christmas Party! Other RSL News. Nevis is currently cruising around the islands, leaving Fossie at home to look after the dog, Mitzy! They traditionally walk to the Memorial in the morning, put up the flags and collect the paper. Thanks Fossie for continuing with the flags, as they are an important part of what our Memorial represents. Our most senior member, Keith Norton, would love to attend the service in Borneo next year, as part of WW2 Anniversary Commemorations. He is waiting on confirmation in regards to his health. However, Keith always remembers, and makes it to our meetings, is allowed to drive, and looks quite spritely for 90 years of age to me. Good luck Keith! We hope you can attend! Goose Club jackpot is currently around $320, and raffles are still available on Friday nights. See you at the club and hopefully we will see you at our REMEMBRANCE DAY Service. Cheers, Rhonda.
Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc G’day everyone in the greater Rollingstone area, with a special welcome to all those who may have recently moved into our little part of “Paradise”. We hope you are enjoying our community and all that it has to offer, and especially the warm and friendship from our local residents. So – what did you do on the long weekend in October? Enjoy the company of friends? That is what some of our Lions Club Members did when they attended, and provided catering support to, the HOGS (Harley Owners Group) at their annual Chapter Challenge weekend up at High Range. Our Lions Club has been supporting them for several years now, and from all reports another successful weekend of fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Lions cooked all meals for them, and the monetary donation from the HOGS in recognition of our services will enable us to continue to provide support to our local community initiatives. Also this month Lions catered for a wedding down at Cleveland Palms, so our freshly repainted bright yellow Catering Trailer is getting out and about in support of our Lions projects. Great to see our Leos and also the School Junior Leos active this month doing little projects to support our environment. Leo Co-ordinator Ian Thomasson and Leo Club President James Baker lead the Leos in refurbishing the new “LEO’s Garden” at the Lions Den, while Assistant Leo Co-ordinator and assistant School Chaplain Leo/Lion Jake Thompson and Lion Jan Fennell also assisted the School Junior Leos to plant their own garden in a recently reclaimed area between two of the school classrooms. Thank you to School Principal Kacey for your support of our Junior Leos – it is very much appreciated. Just to finish off the month, more great fellowship and fun for the Leos with a Car Wash also held by them last weekend, with plenty of water splashed on cars and Leos alike! Have you purchased your tickets to the Lion’s “Longest Dinner Table” to be held on Saturday 8 th November at the Community Centre. All funds raised will be matched by our Australian Lions Foundation and will assist our local Disaster Management Group in their efforts to finalise the purchase an “All Terrain” vehicle to assist them in their duties. Please see separate “Flyer “in this bulletin, and we urge all residents to come and support this late afternoon/early evening of fun and “Rollingstone Themed” low level games and activities. There will be interesting events for all ages, so bring the kids/grandkids – the “whole Family” – with the night to finish with a fireworks display. (NOTE – Please secure your animals if they don’t like fireworks!) Till next month, take care, and if you would like to give something back to your local Community, why not join the Lions Club. Please give me a call on 0407 114 687 …………. John Muller - President P 14

Hello to November and only seven weeks until Santa arrives!! Let the Christmas shopping begin. Toomulla Beach Community Association is holding a Garage Sale on Saturday 1 st November in the front yard of 62 Herald Street. There will be a Sausage Sizzle, Raffle and some giveaways also, so come along and grab a bargain. On a sad note, our thoughts go out to Glen Harrison, Tennille & Amber after the sad passing of their wife and mother Janelle. She will be sadly missed. The date for the AGM for TBWA has been set down for Saturday 17 th January down at Toomulla Park at 4pm. This is your chance to come along and have a say, make a request, give out some ideas on fundraising or even consider coming on board the committee. Fresh ideas, new people are a very healthy recipe to help an association stay alive and functional. Toomulla Fishing Club AGM will be on the same day at 3M at Toomulla Park also. We are having a Sausage Sizzle at Bunning’s North Shore on Saturday 29 th November and welcome volunteers to help us on the day. We have lots of fun and laughs on these days and you even get to try the sausages and have a cold drink!! So if you would like to help out for a couple of hours on Saturday 29th, you can contact me on 47707813. The Christmas Party will be held on Saturday 6 th December down at Toomulla Park. It will be catered for on the night with roasts, veg’s, salad and sweets. Dinner will be served 6.00pm. The cost will be $20 for adults and $5 for kids aged 5-12. Under 5 will be free. Santa will be bringing presents along for the kids at 5.30pm. There will be cold drinks, chips and lollies for all the kids. If you would like Santa to give a present to your children or the Grandkids please contact me and have their names put onto the list. RSVP for the presents and dinner will be Sunday 30th November.
Toomulla Fishing Club is having their Christmas Party on Saturday 22 nd November. Club members can contact Mick Wellington on 0418612546 for more details. TBCA is on Face Book!!! Thank You to Shayne for setting this page up for us. The page is increasing with followers every day. Social Media seems to be the way to go! Facebook is a social networking website that offers many ways to market our Community, your business, or any individual to the Facebook community. We ask that you do your best to enhance the positive aspects of this community, and avoid creating unpleasant experiences. Lucky Numbers has started again. I still have numbers for sale. $10 for 10weeks per number. Every Friday there is a $50 prize for the lucky number drawn. You can phone or email me if you would like a number or just call into 62 Herald and see me. Thank you to everyone who supports the “Lucky Numbers”. There is still a serious problem with people speeding along Herald Street. The speed limit is 50kms not 80kms. Perhaps registration numbers should be given to Goughy & Darren, which might slow you down!! Okay that is it for this month. Happy Birthday to you, if you are celebrating in November. Cheers …………… Rhonda. P 15

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB Our annual Pineapple Fours is fast approaching and will be played on Sunday 2 nd December. This is an all day event which will see visitors from Ingham and Townsville joining local members in three games of great bowls and renewed friendships. Our Sunday morning barefoot bowlers are reminded that there will not be any barefoot bowls on this day but will resume the following week. By the time this article goes to print, we will have had our `Come and Try Day' on Sunday 26 th October which, hopefully, will see even more new bowlers enjoying our great game. It has been very gratifying to see between 12 and 28 bowlers every Sunday morning having a ball on the green and this can only get better in the next year. On a different note, but something that has affected some of our members, is the need for our elder residents to carry sticks and golf clubs when walking their dogs. This is a sad reflection on our little community, but has been necessitated by some random attacks by rogue dogs on innocent walkers. I personally have experienced this trauma so I can readily sympathise with anybody who has undergone a similar event. I have been advised that should anyone be attacked, the correct procedure to follow is to identify the residence the dog belongs to and e-mail this information to Townsville City Council. This will begin a paper trail that will see a council officer (in conjunction with our local police) visit the offending owner and hopefully taking appropriate action. Our local police should also be notified but in the end it is a council responsibility to take action against irresponsible dog owners. It has been great to see some of our newer members (particular Max and Mal) putting in some hard yards on our bowling green. The green is responding well and is playing beautifully, and this is only through the efforts of some of our members giving up their time so we can all enjoy our (great) game. Thanks guys. As usual, please contact Phil Small on 0418 779 292 with any enquiries. Thanks.

THE VOICE of “THE VON” We are now into our 2nd year of our tenure as clubhouse leasees and course managers and while the first 12 months have not been quite what we had expected with machinery breakdowns, staffing, maintenance, replacing etc, we are still married and looking forward to a better 2nd year. With the major expenses behind us hopefully, we shall be able to improve the facility to better cater for members and visitors needs in the coming year. We welcome our newest staff member Jodine to our small band of staff. Jodine has recently moved to Mystic Sands and has children enrolled at the local school. She has proven very versatile as a commercial cook, bar attendant and general roustabout. Many have experienced the pleasant changes she has made to the Friday and Tuesday night food menu. Along with Emma and Colleen, our small band of workers are prepared to tackle the forthcoming Christmas seasonal activities. September and October were extremely big months for us with the Fathers Day Brunch, Disaster Management Day and the Roscos Dugong cup all successfully completed. More than $9000 was raised for community through these events at the club. With the Local Lions Club and RSL also using the facility for fundraising events, we are committed to supporting local groups and employing local people wherever we can. As the dry weather continues and the rain continues to stay away, the course is drying up but still very much playable. Greenkeeper Brett continues to keep it maintained as best as conditions allow. Melbourne Cup is our next major event next Tuesday with a fun afternoon planned. Dowie as usual is the Games co-ordinator for the frivolities after the Grazing tapas lunch from 12-30 – 2-30. For those who do not know, it is not the normal massive sit down buffet lunch as in the past but a wide and varied selection of different dishes in smaller amounts served over a longer period. 2 small examples are prawn and avocado cucumbers and asparagus chicken. Bookings are essential and price a mediocre $30 per person which includes a complimentary glass of champagne or wine. A lucky chair prize, best dressed lady and hat prize are include. Book a table or come alone but don’t miss out. Best of luck to all golfers competing in Medal of medallists as the big day approaches Until next month, keep hitten ‘em straight and far…………….Mine Host, Vonnie Wynne P 17

Monster Goanna! Excitement plus here!!!!
I saw Buddy, my dog fly past the bathroom window the other day, all of a sudden I hear that dumb, gormless type thud of what sounded like a goanna running into a fence. Buddy was wailing like a banshee by this time so I went to investigate and this is what I found …….. A huge hairy monstrous goanna in our swimming pool showing no intention of getting out. Do you know how bad goanna poo smells ???? DISGUSTING so I was keen to evict him ASAP. I got the pool leaf scoop and effected my rescue. No animals were harmed in this process (including myself)………………..Wendy Wildlife Warrior

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. In this issue we have some important information and dates so please read on. On Friday 26 September we had our club monthly BBQ which attracted a disappointingly small turn out probably due to the excellent fishing conditions and the NRL game between Broncos and Cowboys, however, those who did attend had a wonderful time and got an insight into a new method of cooking fish on the BBQ. Chefs from around the globe will flock to our next BBQ begging for a demonstration from our two wonder chefs Rebecca and Sloane. How does it go now? Oh yes, scrape, scrape, cluck, cluck, scratch, scratch, cluck, cluck. You are both mad. Thanks to the number of people who assisted in the food preparation and to Condo, Heath, and Garry and of course our two hens. A very special thank you and an acknowledgement are extended to Col and Gladys Pace for what was voted the best dessert ever. Their complimentary fruit salad and ice cream had us lining up for more, more. Well done and thank you both. For you people who were not present don’t despair as Col and Gladys has promised more of the same next BBQ so don’t miss out. A warm welcome is extended to our new Club members Barry and Ann Mugeli who have recently purchased in the area after moving up from NSW. Congratulations on making the move and we all wish you a great time in your new Club. We also extend a warm welcome to new members the Lee Family, Eddy, Sang Suk, Justin, Aaron and a very cute 2 year old Hayli who looks like a little doll. The family resides in Condon but spend most weekends here in paradise, we hope you all enjoy the fun and camaraderie your Club has to offer. President Garry announced at the BBQ that due to several factors the Committee has taken the hard decision to defer the proposed Monster Fishing Competition to a date to be advised. Further details will be announced at a later date, perhaps by the new Committee. Now it is time for some really important stuff so stop lounging and pay attention. The date of the Annual General Meeting is Friday 28 November during the monthly BBQ. That means all current committee positions will be declared vacant and new office bearers elected during the meeting. Please, give some thought to nominating for a position on the new committee, new people mean new ideas and new enthusiasm so either nominate yourself or someone you know will fill a position. The duties are not onerous except for the Maintainer of the Stinger Net which is entrusted to Dickie. The Management (Executive) Committee positions are: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. There are also Ordinary Committee Members including Market Rep., Stinger Net and Rolly Rag Scribe. To be eligible to hold any committee position other than the secretary, you must be a current financial member of the club. Nomination forms will soon be available from the Secretary. Plans are coming along for the Lucinda Family Fun and Fishing Weekend away from 14 to 16 November. This is shaping up as a great weekend away free from your everyday troubles and cares eh, oh no fellas, that does not mean you leave the wife and kids at home! Family mate, Family. The Expression of Interest sheet is on the notice board at the Landing so if you intend to participate please add your name for catering purposes. Don’t forget to book your own accommodation but please mention you are with the fishing club. Bookings can be made at The Lucinda Point Hotel/Motel on www.lucindahotel.com.au or 47778103 or at the nearby Wanderers Caravan Park on www.wanderers-lucinda.com.au or 47778213 or any other venue of your choice. A range of accommodation options are available so jump on the net and have a look. Gleaned from the Committee Meeting on 12 September, Vice-President Heath Green wishes to redesign the club logo as he believes the current one to be very drab and dull. Other items discussed were that the club should purchase new sandwich boards to advertise coming events; that people are required to sell raffle tickets on Market Day and the idea of a club shirt and hat was discussed with prices and designs to be investigated. If you have any comment, ideas, opinions on the above items of general business why not come along to the next club BBQ to be held on Friday 31 October and express your views, or drop a note into the mail box at the Landing. A garbage bin has been purchased and placed on the pontoon for use by people too bone lazy or ignorant to walk the short distance to the many other bins in the area. This bin is not there to be used as a seat. As announced last month, planning for the New Years Eve Party is well underway. The band, the caterer and the courtesy bus are booked and the rest is down to fine tuning the event. Make sure you get your name in fast once bookings are open. The Committee has learnt a lot from their first attempt last year so this year should be bigger and better, if that is at all possible given the outstanding success at their first attempt. Again, if you have any comment or suggestion, please tell a committee member. A list of Committee Members is on the Club notice board (the blackboard) at the Landing. Again this month there is no fishing news from Dickie who has just returned from an overseas holiday and is still suffering from jet lag or something else. His very informative article will again appear next month. He must have had a great time away; you cannot wipe the smile off his face. Our end of month BBQ is on the last Friday of the month except in December when none is held on the lower deck at the Landing commencing at 6.30. It is free for financial members, $10.00 for visitors and guests who are always most welcome and free for children. What a bargain. We will see you there. In the meantime, write these important dates on that scrap of paper behind the dunny door; 14 -15 16 November – Lucinda Family Weekend Away. 28 November – Annual General Meeting. 31 December – New Year Eve Party. ...until next month Ninger

Rollingstone State School Welcome to term 4 for 2014! This term is always the busiest term of the year, finalising everything, writing reports and preparing for next year! We have a few events coming up for parents of students that will be joining us for prep in 2015. The first is a Prep Information evening for parents on the 5 November. The evening will start at 6.00pm and will go until 7.00pm. Enrolment forms will be available on the night, so come along and find out everything that you need to know about routines and procedures for Prep! We will be hosting two Prep open days this term on November 13 and 27 (these dates coincide with Playgroup meeting at our school). The new prep students should be at school for a 9.00 start with the program finishing at 11.00. Parents are welcome to stay for the morning. We look forward to meeting you all. Reading has been our focus all year and we have had some amazing student results. Half of our school is already at the high benchmark that they are expected to have achieved by the end of the year. We are celebrating all things books and reading for our annual Book Week. We will be having a costume parade on 6 November! \Congratulations to our Junior Leo group (with the assistance of President John, Lion Jake and Lion Jan) for completing their first service project. They constructed a new garden in the school grounds to beautify an area between the classrooms. October 31 is World Teachers Day! (which must be all about Rollingstone State School because our school has the best teachers in the WORLD!) Our annual awards night will be held on the 10 December. Everyone is welcome!

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay It was very good to see that list of snake catchers beside my ‘Natures Notes’ for October. Copy it and stick it on your refrigerator door. There have been TV reports of more than usual numbers of sightings of snakes in Western Australia and there have been several sightings around Paluma area already this season. So, you have been warned. I started off my life in natural history, including snakecatching, at about the age of 10 when I was given a beautiful specimen of the harmless Diamond Python. I do not keep snakes now but I do keep my eyes open to see what snakes are still about. They often do appear on our roads and while many do get killed, some unnecessarily, and our bush is burnt more regularly, they are diminishing in numbers. I have only once been bitten by a venomous snake and that was by a Death Adder. I have told you the story before about that episode. Here is a photograph of me being carried by the locals from the southern slopes of the Adelbert Range to the hospital in Madang. I revived to be walking before we got to Madang. It did happen. Studies by the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, Parkville, Victoria show that about (only?) 18% of bites from the Death Adder are fatal. This may be because the others, like me, did not get a full bite. While many people think that the only good snake is a dead one, disregarding the good they do in reducing the numbers of rats and mice, some people think they show bravery in trying to kill one. The Green Tree Snake and the Brown Tree Snake which might be resting in the roof of your house do good work in keeping you free of rats and mice.

A wine and cheese evening was held at the Paluma Hall on 4 th October, at which awards were presented to the winners of the Garden Competition held a few weeks earlier. The competition, generously sponsored by Bunnings North Shore warehouse, showcased Paluma gardens at their best. Awards were given in several categories and the trophy for best over-all garden went deservedly to Brenda and Phil Davies. Best commercial property went to Ann and Andy Bishop of ‘Forest Mist’, best residential property to Ross and Bronwyn Murray, highly commended in village to Peter and Dorothy Clumpp, best acreage block to Don Battersby, highly commended acreage to Devron and Linda. For most interesting plant or display, two awards were given to Wilfred Karnoll and to Greg and Cheryl Burraston. Special mentions went to Les and Lynn Hyland, Donna and Michael Drew, Colwyn Campbell, Graham and Judy Malpas, Nick and Glenda van Rynswoud, Anne Bruyeres and Staff and Merle Browne. The twentieth anniversary of the official opening of Gumburu Environmental Education Centre was celebrated over three days on the weekend of 17 to 19 October. Gumburu was constructed during 1993 to provide a venue for students at Catholic schools to study environmental education in the rainforest. This need became apparent in the 1980’s when popularity of bookings led to access to the Paluma Environmental Education Centre being restricted to State School students. A formal meeting of principals of schools in the Diocese was held on Friday; for some this was their first visit to Gumburu. Saturday was the big day with celebratory and historical addresses, reminiscences and reflections on the aims and achievements of the school, interspersed with prayers and guided walks in the rainforest. Guests were welcomed on arrival by the Townsville Diocesan Executive Director Dr Cathy Day. Special guests included the former Director, Sister Mary McDonald, former teacher and Holy Spirit Principal Paul Lucas and former Paluma Environmental Centre Principal, Cam McKenzie, all part of the driving force behind the construction of the new centre. Other guests included the Director Leadership and School Development, Ross Horner, the Director - Learning, Teaching and Catholic Identity, Ernie Christie, the architect, Kerrie Prescott, members of the Gumburu In-Service Team, current Paluma EEC Principal Linda Venn, teachers at Catholic schools and members of the Paluma community. Presentations were made to people instrumental in the development and running of the centre, including a twenty year service award to Janette Furber. As usual, Gumburu was beautifully presented and the catering was superb with delicious food prepared by Janette Furber and Jodie Pace. Sunday was a quieter day of reflection with most guests departing by mid-day. Extensions to the Paluma Environmental Education Centre are progressing well, with the framework up for the new accommodation block and the new kitchen well under way. There has been little disruption to activities for visiting students who always enjoy the out-door classrooms and walks in the rainforest. Traffic in Paluma has been busy with many tradesmen’s vehicles in and out of the village and trucks bringing in building materials. This brings me to the subject again of road safety. Over the past few weeks there have been several incidents on the Range road resulting in damage to vehicles and one resident was the victim of a very unpleasant episode of road rage. Please take care on the road as some drivers do not drive carefully or courteously. Often when confronted by another vehicle on the wrong side of the road you are too concerned with taking evasive action to be able to note and remember the registration number. If, however you do manage to, or to get the name of the company who owns the vehicle, please report it to the local police on 4770 7144. A dash cam is a useful accessory; maybe it will one day become a necessity. On a less serious note, Paluma’s version of the Melbourne Cup, the Paluma Pick, will be held on Saturday, 1 st November at 6.30 pm at the Paluma Community Hall. Bring a plate to share and join in the fun…….Colwyn Campbell P 23

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s John Holliday on his psychedelic scooter. Q: Your mad Vespa. What’s that about? A: I love my Vespa. I have always ridden Italian bikes but the iconic Vespa is more my speed these days. Q: John you are a comparative newcomer to this area. What bought you here? A: I was looking for paradise and I think I have found it and not only paradise but also a wonderful lady who I am about to marry. Life doesn’t get any better than that. Q: It sounds like you have an adventurous spirit. A: I grew up in a roadhouse and the Pioneer coach captains would entertain me with magical stories of the outback. As soon as I could I purchased a campervan and took off. I still have a campervan and love to get away in it as often as possible. Q: You were a marriage celebrant when you lived in Victoria. What attracted you to that work? A: I was working for a funeral home as a chauffer when they asked me to officiate at some funerals. It gave me a good feeling to help give people a funeral that worked for them. I suppose the next natural progression was to marriage celebrant. I had great fun doing that, everything from an Elvis wedding, arriving on my scooter of course, to marrying celebrities and even some notorious Melbourne identities but I am not at liberty to disclose names. Q: You are very active in community work. Was that a way of getting to know the people in your new neighbourhood? A: I have always been involved in committees and lobby groups. I have a keen interest in improving life in my community. Actually I thought when I moved to Queensland that I would slow down on these activities. But in no time I had joined Lions and ended up being treasurer and third vice president. I also got involved with RADCA. I guess it is in my nature. The people here are very community minded and I think that it would be great to get all the groups working together with a greater understanding of each other. Q: John if you came back as an animal what would you choose? A: Jan would say green frog. She collects them. But I would prefer to be a wise old owl. Q: OK so lets finish with a hypothetical dinner party. Who would you invite. A: The 14th Dalai Lama and Mahatma Gandhi who have both inspired movements for civil freedom and peace across the world.
PLAYGROUP The year is flying by. Who can believe we are in November already. We have been busy at Playgroup making our Christmas decorations. We have Sandra from Re-Creativ coming along to do more of those workshops you like and heading to Bunnings to doing some really creative artworks. We have fit in a lot this term and I have booked and confirmed our allimportant Christmas party. This year we will be having Rollingstone host us. For those of you who need a lift on the bus, please get your name on the booking sheet and please RSVP to let me know who is coming along to celebrate Christmas with us. This term will have been getting to know our local community. We have joined 2 of our local schools by hosting playgroup there twice a month, and what an exciting time we are having. The kids are really enjoying the change. We meet at our local schools on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday at Bluewater State School and the 2nd and 4th Thursday at Rollingstone State School each month. We have also teamed up with Bunnings Warehouse and they have hosted some of our playgroup sessions at our centres and we have travelled for some of our sessions to Bunnings Warehouse North Shore. Keep an eye out for the Christmas Party Flyer, this should be any exciting day for the parents and children. Please check your Program and like us on Facebook to keep up to date with where we are heading this term. Let’s go have some fun. Till next time keep playing…………. Nicole P 24
