Volunteers Wanted:

ANZAC Day is just around the corner as I write this, and it is always a great time to stop and reflect on the quality of our lives today and who, before us gave so much to secure that quality. Lest we forget. As per the calendar above and in the back of this newsletter, May is not a sit down and contemplate your navel month. Margie Ryder has three meetings in 2 evenings (5 & 6 May) covering the community requests for a family facility eg skate park or the like; healthy pathways; and drainage. All three meetings are open to the public; projects like these will find it difficult to take off without community support. Help Margie support us - Please find the time to lend your support. 8 May at 9.30am at the Rollingstone Community Centre, will see a meeting of Representatives from the Townsville City Council Disaster Resilience Team and representatives from all the local emergency services and most importantly members of the public to discuss a Rollingstone Response Plan. Local knowledge is a must for this plan to be a success. Please make the time to attend – especially if you are long term local or new Rollingstone Rag, May 2021

We’ve all seen the number of sold stickers on the for-sale signs and the new building projects going up recently. This got us thinking that we (meaning the Association and the Lions as a joint venture) are organising a Welcome to Community Morning Tea. This will be held on 14 June at the Community hall. This event is open to everyone from absolute new to the district to having lived here almost your whole life. An invitation will be developed and disseminated through the community for neighbours to give to their new neighbours and offer to come with them if they voice, they are a little shy. Happy Mother’s Day on 9 May and to those having a birthday or special celebration this month – congratulations and enjoy. Take care of yourself………………..you are the only one who can. Cheers, Chris 7

HEALTH TOPIC OF THE MONTH SAND FLY (MIDGES) FACTS Commonly known as ‘Sand Flies’. Biting Midges are small flies. Small and hard to see. People are often bitten without realising. Itching may commence immediately after bite, but often not for some hours later or next day. Reactions to bites may last for several days to weeks. If you experience discomfort from the bites of midges seek medical attention to help relieve symptoms. Midges are most likely to be encountered around tidal zones, lagoons, estuaries and mangrove swamps. Most active around dusk and dawn. Adult flight activity increases shortly after high and spring tides. Activity decreases as wind increases The department of Medical Entomology at Sydney University states that – “There are no known efficient methods of controlling biting midges” (Sand Flies) and “Irritation associated with bites may be alleviated with anti-pruritic preparations, but severe reactions may require medical treatment with antihistamines.” Where appropriate, try to wear long sleeves and long pants, light coloured and loose fitting clothes especially around dusk and in areas of high midge populations. Use insect repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely. DEET (Diethyltoluamide, N,N-diethyl-3-methlbenzamide) remains the gold standard of currently available insect repellents. It’s a broad spectrum agent that is effective against mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas and ticks. It was developed in 1946 following the experience of American soldiers involved in jungle warfare and was again used in the Vietnam War. In higher risk areas (eg areas where malaria, Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus and Dengue fever occur) Insect repellents with Rollingstone Rag, May 2021

15-30 per cent Deet should be used. Always follow directions of manufacturer when applying insect repellent. Guidelines for safe use of insect repellent are:

• • • • • • •

Read entire label before use Roll on preparations are preferable to sprays Apply sparingly (lightly) to exposed skin Do not use on cuts, wounds or irritated skin Do not apply to areas around the eyes and mouth Do not apply to lips, hands or fingers of young children When returning indoors wash repellent of skin with soap and water • Store repellents out of reach of children as ingestion may be harmful Natural repellents include: • Eucalyptus oil • Tea tree oil • Vick vapour rub and many more home remedies. Try what natural remedy works best for you. What works for one person may not work for the next person. If you experience discomfort from the bites of midges seek medical attention to help relieve symptoms. NEWS

• March saw us lose two (2) more of our treasured residents in John Pace and Judyana Holt. Wonderful people who contributed so much and made others’ lives that much better. We will miss them terribly. Vale John and Jude. • Deb Calder has had shoulder surgery and is home recovering; Len Clark had a medical episode from which he is now also recovering; there are no doubt others not doing it too well, and we wish them all good things. • Marion & Eddie Pettifor have now sold and have moved into Town. We wish them well in their new life and know they will be missed. • Our Railway Display is finally finished to this point and it’s now up to us to complete the diorama. This will go ahead as items are ready/available. • Not a lot left to put in place at the Centre now – for us, anyhow - so we can take a step back and have a good look at all we do and offer. More “empire-building” won’t be on the agenda for a while as we examine our organisation from a 100% perspective. • We’ve asked Council to consider an external Public Toilet block; we would also like an upgrading of the Centre as a general Evacuation Point. However, that’s all in Council’s hands, and as they have no money other than State and Federal funding when it’s available, those items are probably a long way off. Otherwise, we’re pretty much okay and doing it independently……..although we’d love a new and bigger Op Shop, but atm, that’s the stuff of which dreams are made. • BUT, something we have managed to arrange is a (more official) Weather Station in Mystic Sands to record the rainfall figures. That area gets much more PINEAPPLE RICE CREAM. 1/2 cup rice. 4 cups of milk or water will do. 1/4 cup of sugar. 1/2 teas. Vanilla. 1 tin crushed pineapple (large) 1 or 1 1/2 cups whipped cream. Cook rice in boiling milk or water. Simmer when boiling over low heat until all liquid has been absorbed. Remove from heat, add sugar & vanilla & cool. When cold fold in drained pineapple and whipped cream. Refrigerate. (Very Nice!) Rollingstone Rag, May 2021

rain than most of the district, so it’s something badly needed for mitigation purposes. This will be in place directly. • We have managed to have the Townsville University Hospital’s Wound Management borders extended to include Rollingstone – and let’s hope it includes the Townsville Local Government boundary which is Crystal Creek. It’s taken us many years to achieve this but it’s happened and we’re so grateful and so thrilled. • We’ll be putting in a Long Jump Pit for the two (2) local Schools’ Athletic Carnivals – Rollingstone and Mutarnee – later this year. Really looking forward to those days which should be great fun. • We have increased our CCTV cameras from 8 to 12 and upgraded them yet again. All done now and hopefully, to help keep us from being too vulnerable or easy pickings for those in our world who feel the need to hurt. • Our Tourist Brochures should be into all local outlets (if they’ll have them) very shortly. Hopefully, they’ll encourage more visitors than we’ve had lately. • And our Locality Signs are presently being built and printed and should also be in situ in the not-too-distant future: one up at the truck-stop and one at the Community Centre. Looking forward to having all these projects operative and completed. • We are currently working on investing in a Washing Machine & Dryer for use by the general public in times of severe weather events (the Lord deliver us!!) or other times of hardship. There will be a small charge. We should have it all in place in a matter of months. • And, we’re going to purchase a new Projector for the Big Hall. The old one has seen sterling service and now needs overdue retirement. • We had a meeting today regarding the implementing of a Morning Tea for Newcomers to our Community/ District. We’ve done an article to cover our plans. Please see Page 16 • Trish Cronin has organised a replacement for the Pace Family Historical Sign at the Centre. It had deteriorated quite markedly and Trish was good enough to take up the issue and rapidly organise a replacement. Thank you, Ma’am. It’ll be in place soon. • “God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.” (Nate White) • Live well, love much, laugh

The Aqua Group recently held a lunch time get together to formally say goodbye to two long term participants, Joan and Carol. Both ladies were part of the original group which was formed by Babz about twenty years ago and have continued to attend regularly ever since.

BABZ AQUA GROUP As the weather starts to cool a little, the enthusiasm for our water exercise program has certainly not diminished! Leading up to the school vacations, our groups were large, audibly and physically vibrant and lots of fun was had by all. School holidays saw the Rollingstone Beach Front Resort very busy, so we took a break and Rebecca organised smaller groups in the Mystic Sands Golf Resort pool. Our thanks go to both venues for allowing us the use of their great facilities. A huge thankyou to Rebecca for her enthusiasm that is increasing our range of exercises and challenging us to greater flexibility and fitness. Should you have any queries, please call 0417716366 Consider joining us next season!

Office of Nick Dametto MP P: 07 4765 4700 | F: 07 4765 4709 | Member for Hinchinbrook Visit: 86-92 Herbert Street, Ingham QLD 4850 E: hinchinbrook@parliament.qld.gov.au

Community safety is an the issue that continues to dominate discussions whenever I meet with residents across Hinchinbrook.

who commit either Unlawful use or possession of motor vehicles, aircraft or vessel, Burglary and Entering or being in premises and committing indictable offences.

Everyone should have a right to feel safe, whether it’s in their own homes or outdoors. But the reality is we have a youth crime crisis on our hands which the State Labor Government barely acknowledges.

The amendments would have also defined a recidivist offender as someone who has been convicted of those serious offences at least twice, regardless of whether the offences were the same. No ifs, no buts.

LABOR SHUNS CRIME CRISIS

For instance, in the police division of Rollingstone, there were 91 offences committed over the last quarter (January 20 to April 19), with theft, unlawful entry, property damage and unlawful use of a motor vehicle making up some of those offences. At the time of writing this column, April had the highest number of offences this year at 41, with the number of offences being on a steady incline since January. While the rates of offending in Rollingstone may be lower in comparison to other areas of Townsville, it’s obvious that without some strong deterrents for young offenders, we risk those numbers only getting higher. Katter’s Australian Party attempted to introduce amendments to the government’s Youth Justice Bill that would have would have instituted a minimum of 12 months imprisonment to be served wholly in a corrective services facility (detention centre or approved remote property) for recidivist young offenders

Unfortunately, Labor used their numbers to stop those amendments, seemingly happy with their watered-down Bill that will do very little to curb offending rates across Queensland. But I will not let that stop me from continuing to speak out on this issue until we see the State Government take substantive action to make our community safer.

Nick Dametto MP, Member for Hinchinbrook

FISHERMAN'S LANDING FISHING & SOCIAL CLUB Welcome everybody to this month's edition of the Rolly Rag Report for the Fishing Club. I trust you all had a Happy Easter - and didn't overdose on chocolates (like one of my Grandsons did!) Firstly, I would like to comment on the Markets held on Saturday 3rd April. What a huge market this was. There were some 23 stallholders, way above anything we have seen in recent years, many many people in attendance, both locals and visitors, and this being largely without the usual influx of grey nomads that we see each year. Our next market will be held on Saturday 1st May. Stallholder interest has already shown that there will be even more stalls at this Market. So come on down to the park near the landing and support this local Community event, which is getting stronger and stronger. The Fishing Club BBQ Breakfast was flat strap, with all the helpers running all morning. Kim tells me she ordered double the amount of food that they usually have for the BBQ and then had to get more supplies in. A great effort from Kim and all her helpers on the day. Our last Friday Night BBQ was again well attended by Members - again many thanks to those who cooked the BBQ, did the serving, made salads, set up for the BBQ, then packed everything away again. Only one winner for monthly fishing prize for February congratulations to Wayne Truscott. These Friday Nights are a great social night, a BBQ, few drinks, lots of fun and laughter, and only possible by the continued efforts of those that I have just mentioned. See you all at the next BBQ Friday 30th April commencing 6.30pm. Visitors welcome.

from the landing. All you need to do is ring Kim on 0419 387 856 to book a seat on the bus. ANZAC Day - by the time this is printed the ANZAC Day ceremonies are likely to have been concluded. As we have in past years, we will again be laying a wreath at the morning (10 o'clock) service. I encourage as many members as possible to attend the services, dawn and/or morning service. Fish weigh ins - our Fishing Co-ordinator Gavin tells me that very few fish have been weighed in this month. I don't know if we haven't been fishing, or we aren't sending the photos in. The process is very simple if you want to send your catch in for the monthly prizes - take a photo of your catch, up against your brag mat or ruler to record the size, and a photo of you holding the fish with your membership card so that we know who the fish belongs to. You don't then need to have to worry about gilling or gutting, and then bringing it into the Landing to be weighed, measured and recorded as you used to have to do. So lets get those photos in! We've got a few of our members away travelling at the moment, and I trust they are enjoying their holidays:Garry & Koy Luff - off to Canberra. Richard and Moira Sharkey away in their caravan down south. Russell and Di Greene - having Anzac Day with their son down south. Neil & Di Thompson - travelling in their mobile home en route to Canberra, catching up with family on the way, and having ANZAC Day with their son in Canberra. Mick and Chris Maher travelling in the caravan to enjoy a bit of camping and visit rellies, although I think the Covid outbreak in Brisbane interfered a bit with that.

Also, don't forget we have the courtesy bus to take you to and

FISHING REPORT: Giday Folks , well another month gone by and the winter or dry season fishing is fast approaching. The mouth of Rollingstone creek has produced some excellent Barra also some good Grunter using live bait of Blue Herring and Potty Muller also the odd Grunter being landed using squid baits but moving the line every now and then to keep the fish interested. Also reports of Bream and Grunter being boated in Cattle and Crystal Creeks also Taylors Beach area,. Blue and King Salmon are now being caught at the mouths of most local creeks live bait being the best however plastic and gold bomber lures are also producing some surprising results. Just remember there are large crocs in both Hencamp Rollingstone and Scrubby Creeks and if they are in those then they will be in all the creeks of any size. I have a drag net however I can’t find any volunteers for the deep end. Good size Nannygai and Trevally being caught on the inner shoals from Cattle Creek down to Paluma Shoals of Saunders Beach. Pilchards seem to be the best bait in these areas also live bait Some good Spotted and Doggie Mackerel being boated around Gun Barrel Reef which is in the 6 to 9 meter depth area out from Rollingstone Creek. Trawling silver and white and red coloured lures are working really well and also floating Pilchards.

The boat ramp at the landing has been packed during the good weather and all boaties have been on good behaviour by being a little patient of those taking a little longer to launch or retrieve their vessels. Keep up the good work guys and girls. Well that’s it for another month hoping the wind and weather is kind for the next month or so and then you can look forward to another 30 to 40 thousand whales arriving in our waters. Tight lines and safe boating and remember to put in a trip sheet with Ingham or Townsville Coast Guards or at least let someone know where you are proceeding to and when you will return. You can leave your out of date Flares and EPIRBS at the Landing for safe disposal. For the last few days Paluma has experienced a foretaste of winter, with bleak, sunless days and alternating periods of torrential and drizzly rain. Strong, cold winds have buffeted the trees making them writhe and sway in frenzied dances. Watching them, I recall a song I learnt in primary school many years ago. The tune was melancholy and, with the words, evoked the unseen forces of nature. Perhaps, some of you may know it: Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I, But when the trees bow down their heads The wind is passing by. Who has seen the wind? Neither I nor you But when the leaves are trembling The wind is passing through Rain has washed much of the nectar from the forest flowers and many birds who have found sufficient food in the forest over these past few months are now returning in greater numbers to our gardens for easier pickings. All day, the air has resonated with the screeches of Lorikeets, jostling for occupancy of the food tray on my deck: so busy squabbling that they don’t notice smaller birds sneaking in and taking the food. In the distance can be heard the screeching of Cockatoos, no doubt plundering someone’s citrus tree. Groups of nomadic Brown Cuckoo-doves are feasting on the fruit of ‘bleeding heart’ trees. While heavy rain and high winds persist, it is common for trees to fall across the Range road and for rocks to be dislodged. It is time to take extra caution in this weather – headlights on and be prepared for whatever you may encounter at the next curve. This time last year, Covid 19 had already disrupted our lifestyles for three months. We were anxious, unsure of the future but aware too, that out of adversity comes strength and adaptation. It is hard to believe that a year has passed; we are

unscathed compared to elsewhere in the world and now with the vaccination programme under way, we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Many visitors came to Paluma through Easter and the school holidays on their way to the Dam, with many stopping to picnic on the Village Green and explore the walking tracks around the village. The Easter Market was a resounding success: not as many stalls as usual but every stall-holder reported record sales. Anzac Day will again be celebrated in Paluma with the raising of the flag and a small ceremony at the Cenotaph, at 7.00 am on 25th April. Monthly special events will be held in the coming weeks – the next being, a social meeting with Margie Ryder on 30th April in the Community Hall. As membership numbers in the Rural Fire Brigade have dropped due to the retirement of several of the older members, a general meeting and recruitment drive will be held at 11.00 am on 1st May, followed by a barbecue lunch. On Saturday afternoon, 15th May, at 4.00, Petanque will be played on the Village Green; it should be an enjoyable experience for beginners and the well-practised alike. Drinks and refreshments will be served afterwards. Table Tennis and other games will be played on Saturday afternoon, 29th May from 4.30 followed by refreshments. The AGM for the PDCA will be held on 24th April and will be reported on in the June issue of Rolly Rag. At last, we can announce that the display of historic photographs of Paluma will again be open to the public from Tuesday, 27th April. The exhibition is open to the public every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm in the Community Hall. Entry is free. Please feel welcome to visit Paluma, browse the display and share a ‘cuppa’ and cake with us. Colwyn Campbell

BALGAL BEACH BOATING & LEISURE CLUB NEWS G’Day all, Our last BBQ was not very well attended which was a shame; maybe due to the holidays, the football, so many moving away or the Covid, but we still had a great time and as usual, the food was tops and plenty of it. Hello Rag Readers, Easter has come and gone and fortunately we had a very safe period on our roads in the Division. Due to the Covid restrictions we have certainly seen more people camping than in previous years and Easter Monday proved eventful. Five women went for a bush walk on the Range, it was only supposed to last for 6 hours, but it went for 36! SES personnel, extra police and a helicopter were all deployed and fortunately the women were discovered safe well and hungry. Makes me wonder how much easier this whole ordeal would have been for them though if only they had taken a personal emergency device with them, similar to an EPIRB. Cheap, effective and gives people great peace of mind in such situations. Everyone living north of Deeragun has experienced lengthy delays on the highway due to traffic accidents. As recently as the 19th of this month we had a very near tragedy immediately outside Frosty Mango. Earlier in the week there were 4 young people seriously injured turning right from the Yabulu Service Station to head north. Both of these incidents involved drivers turning from a standing start in a 100km speed zone. Please stop, wait and be sure of the speeds of the on coming traffic coming towards you BEFORE committing to entering high speed zones. Mistakes like these are very costly.

of the first drone outside the SEQ area. This will result in a massive reduction in the amount of time and effort it takes to plot traffic crash sites, particularly those serious ones that seem to be occurring more often. It should also mean a 50% reduction in the time we would normally have the highway closed for and for that I am very grateful. The wet weather is hanging about much longer this year and certainly has been greening up the place. Brings us back into the fire preparation season and this year is set to be a big one. Suggest you start planning by tidying up fire breaks, contacting the local RFS chiefs regarding obtaining permits and identifying windows in the weather that will assist burn offs. Remember your land is your responsibility. Yours Sincerely, Tony Jacobs, OIC Police, Rollingstone Station

Regarding Traffic Accidents and the lengthy delays we experience on the Highway as a result. The OIC of the Forensic Crash Unit for the Townsville District, Sgt Mark KNOJPES has been trained in the flight of and taken delivery

Are you bushfire prepared? The bushfire season in Queensland runs from late July to February, and will vary within the state. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action. When there’s a bushfire in your area, it’s up to you to take notice, seek information, make decisions and act.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi Community, I hope everyone had a great Easter holiday. When our students heard about Margie Ryder requesting ideas regarding a family friendly project for our area, ideas and discussions were buzzing around the school. In fact, there was so much energy and thought around this proposal, we decided to incorporate their interest and ideas into our persuasive English unit for Term 1. I’ll leave you with a few letters from our Year 3 and 4 students. Andrew Stallman PRINCIPAL Rollingstone State School
