Adhering to the RoadMap to recovery - The RTC is inviting clients in its doors again. We do recommend only 3 people and staff (to the maximum of 5 people) to be in the RTC at any one given time and we do ask that hands are washed on arrival and to continue with social distancing. Emergency Food Relief Boxes and bread are available. Please call 47707855 if you are in need on anything. The Rollingstone Community Bus is operational again as of 28 May with very limited seating available due to social distancing eg one passenger per row sitting on either side of the bus. If necessary and if the demand is there, the two buses will be utilised on the day. Alternatively, a second run can be organised for a different day. Looking ahead on the RoadMap to recovery and as long as nothing changes in the meantime, we will be looking at opening the hall up to activities around 15 June when groups up to 20 can meet. See the Diary for Activities, dates and times. The Centrelink Express app for your smart phone either Apple or Android has everything you need to make contact from anywhere. All you need is your MyGov login, a smart phone and an Internet connection. The Centrelink computer, WiFi, phone and fax etc. are available at no cost at the RTC.
3 x Kid’s Art workshops and a Kid’s Art Exhibition is being organised see flyer on next page
The absolutely wonderful unseasonal rain has been the best thing to get the grass growing over the new sand on Pace Park but the down side is that the scheduled second layer has had to be postponed. The Association in conjunction with the Rollingstone Art Group are holding a series of Art Workshops from 11, 18 and 25 July, designed to teach the youngsters of the district how to paint on a canvas. See the flyer on the next page. A couple of weeks after the workshops an Art Exhibition will be organised to present the works of art. Bookings will be essential as we can only imagine that social distancing directives will continue to be observed. May is the International Year of the Volunteer month, and while many of our Volunteers have been stood down there are so many that have been carrying on regardless. It is time we again acknowledge all the Volunteers in this community. You are all priceless, your contribution to your community is AbFab and needs to be celebrated. I am not going to name everyone for a couple of reasons 1) I don’t have the space or time and 2) I don’t want to insult anyone by missing them out. You all know who you are and what you do. Thank you, we APPRECIATE everything you do.
We are getting through the isolation and things are loosening a bit. The Railway display is in its construction phase. Thank you to See the Diary on the back page for the group and their starting Brett from NQ Concrete and Bobcat Hire, you have done a times. Please, do not get complacent – please remain active with wonderful job. We ask that everyone avoid the area for the social distancing, washing hands, and sneezing into elbows etc. safety of all. Continue to check in on your neighbours, give family a call, Skype The Breast Screen Van had a very successful visit to the district, with friends, do anything to keep mentally interested…most this time round with 77 women being screened. importantly look after yourselves. You are the only ones who can. Cheers Chris

Gloria Poulsen is not well at all. She is in Bill’s care 24/7 and this is so sad to hear. Gloria has been part of our local, Bluewater and Northern Beaches’ Seniors for many years and worked very hard for TNB Seniors and her Bluewater/Toolakea community for a long time. We’d like to let her know we’re thinking of her and sending just the very best of wishes. Also not doing it well at present or recovering from surgery are Trevor Phillips, Rob Thomson, Gary Luff, Terri Dallman, Terry Saunders, that we know about. Our thoughts are with Gwen Cahill in hospital and Don Pearson having extended treatment in town. Bob & Judy Holt have gone to live in town which is the best thing for them. The end of an era as one of our most contributive families leave us. This is a sad time for those of us who’ve known the Holts for many years and know how much they’ve done for Rollingstone and District; and what good friends they’ve been to so many of us and just how much we’ll miss them. • • • • •
Well, at long last, the Railway Display is on the way! Brett (Logan – NQ Concreting & Bob Cat Hire) has done a great job and we’re looking forward to progressing as planned as items become available, the fencing and roof are erected, and it all really takes shape as we originally envisioned it would look. Our Bush Tucker Garden is also taking shape as we work on all that is to happen there as well. By now, our Bus will be running again with reduced passenger numbers. This is unable to be avoided as Government directions are still in force, but at least our contribution towards public transport is up and at ‘em for everyone’s convenience. Work is still happening on the Oval which, when finished, should be a super job well done and badly needed for the sake of anyone wanting to use the playing fields. For the sake of our beautiful beach and those who wish to enjoy it without being harassed by “red-necks”, if you are concerned about those treating it with disregard and/or illegally, please contact our local Queensland Police Service Officer in Charge immediately, if not sooner! It’s about the only way we’re going to get any results – other than that all Governments look past their navels and ban motorised vehicles on beaches everywhere!!
And so another month under “house arrest” wraps up. Could be a lot, lot worse. We’re very blessed, really. You might like to try this – so easy-peasy; and something the kids can make/help with also…The only ingredients you need is half a tub of Greek yoghurt and 2/3 bag of self- raising flour. Then, the method continues with simplicity: > Combine the yoghurt and the flour with your hand to mix. > Once in a ball, roll out with a rolling pin in pizza base shapes. > Put in oven at 250 degrees (fan forced) for 8-10 minutes. > Remove and add your choice of pizza toppings. “God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.” (Nate White) Stay safe and well....................... “Sancho Panza”. MAY 18TH—24TH WAS NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK: THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS who have worked all year round in our lovely, caring Community. We especially thank those who have continued to work behind the scenes during this pandemic. Some of the jobs that have been completed are: Bush Tucker Garden, pruning and general clean up of the gardens surrounding the RTC and mowing. The RaDCA Management Committee, Rollingstone Lions Club, Fire Brigade, SES, Op Shop and Rolly Rag workers have continued to operate (whilst maintaining social distancing of course). Many others have continued their voluntary work without expectation of recognition. Chris and Mark have continued to be at the RTC to assist all of us as required. There are also many kind and generous residents who have assisted neighbours and friends in all manner of ways: these kind actions have not gone unnoticed. Thank you everyone!

Rollingstone State School
Hi Community Restrictions are starting to ease and a little bit of so-called ‘normality’ is returning to school. For the past couple of weeks Prep and Year 1 have been our big ‘school leaders’, as they are the only grades learning at school all day. You really have to admire kids and the way they quickly adapt to change. The first couple of days they certainly struggled with coping with anything past 10am. ‘I’m hungry’, ‘When is it lunch time?’ and ‘It’s playtime now Mr Stallman’ the common expressions. I have to admit that their behaviour was excellent, as they certainly were not going to miss playtime with their mates. By the end of the week, everyone had settled back into normal routine just as if nothing had happened. However, it was unanimously voted by Prep and Year 1 that perhaps they should continue to be leaders of the school in the future and ‘WE RULE THE SCHOOL’ has become their new motto. I wonder how long it will take for the older students to squash that idea? On the 25th May, all students return to full time school. We can’t wait to have the team back together again. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with another chapter from a Year 5 student and an example of some great home learning from Year 4. Andrew Stallman, Principal, Rollingstone State School. The Misery House The Misery House that stood in the poorest part of town had been there for centuries. People wandered in but never came out. Billy decided to go in because he wanted to investigate the mysterious disappearances.
nowhere, he held bags of ammunition. They loaded the guns to the brim of the magazine, then the boys were ready to go into the house. The door was locked so they did what anyone would do, they shot the door where the lock was but it did not open. So Billy and his friends climbed to the nearest window. They Billy wandered around the house and smelled a stench coming shook in fear as they fell through the hole in the window and from underground. There was a light in the top story of the onto the rotten floorboards. house that flickered on and off. He knocked on the side of the thin wooden wall waiting for a response from within. He Billy glanced at all of the old rotted floorboards around him. thought to himself, ‘I want to go in but I need companions.’ He had a vision of his mum caring for him as a baby before she disappeared. He felt scared He searched for his friends from school in the neighbourhood. and confused. He managed to find six of them and they crept through his house to his Dad’s bedroom, so they could collect the guns Crack! They fell through from the cupboard where there were seven pistols. They all the floorboards and into the grabbed a pistol each but no ammunition, only the two empty basement. cartridges in the magazine. By Anthoney They approached the Misery House when his Dad came out of Year 5 Jacko cereal: Through our home learning program, Year 2,3,4 have been working on persuasive devices. Just for fun, we began the unit with a text trying to persuade us to eat insects! Students were asked to choose whether they would consider eating insects, or not – if they were really hungry! Their task was to write a short text persuading me to their point of view. Below is a text from Jacko, one of our Year 4 students. I know that bugs are disgusting and gross! But hey, they have more protein than beef. Some bugs even taste like bacon or fish. Who wouldn’t like to try termite biscuits or a bowl of wiggly earthworm spaghetti? Don’t be afraid of the first chomp of a crunchy grasshopper, it’s okay to be nervous but it tastes like chicken!
We thought this was a great effort! The next task was to consider audience and purpose and create a cereal to promote. I received an email from Jacko explaining his ideas. He was still very interested in the bugs! An excerpt from his email. The bugs we are going to put in are crickets and mealworms, we are going to cut the mealworms into thirds then roast them. Bec, his Mum, had started to think this had gone far enough! On one of her visits to school to swap out his work she informed me that Jacko had actually decided he was going to make the cereal for real, he’d asked her to order the insects on-line! I assured her this was not expected… but I’m awaiting his return to school with some trepidation, just in case he’s gone ahead!

Hello all, The very recent fatality in the Burdekin and the serious traffic crash further north both involving quad bikes should alarm any parent. There is a well-documented history of quad bike accidents in Australia and suggestions to make them safer could fill a swimming pool - I will leave that to experts. Recent complaints regarding quad bikes on beaches, roads and nearby National Parks would indicate we have been lucky so far. This is not just something that affects people coming from Townsville, its local residents also. This has required a co ordinated response to manage, that is continuing. Your local Councillor, Margie RYDER, has this matter in her sights and she has the 100% support of the QPS. To ride a quad you MUST wear a helmet, ride safely, and the quad MUST BE registered to use on a road, beach, National Park or ANY public land. If you believe you are exempt as an employer in any workplace, think again. WPH & S obligations put you and your employees in the hotseat. Before you buy a quad bike for your children you must consider where you are going to supervise them using it. Always buy the appropriate safety equipment. Don’t buy a cheap 2nd hand helmet that has been handed down over time, buy something fit to order that will keep their heads safe. Always have a private landholder lined up so there is somewhere safe for the kids to ride. Clemant Forest National Park is not appropriate, they must hold a licence AND the vehicle must be registered. Same for the beach. Below is information on how to register a quad bike. This information is online. The normal vehicle registration application is the form (F3518) needed, ensuring Section 4 is completed. The vehicle details inspection sheet also needs to be completed (F3529). Nominate a third-party insurer. Evidence of garaged address (Driver Licence) Proof of purchase is also required. Please note, when a vehicle is to be used for recreational purposes it is recommended that the access approvals are obtained from the land/road owner as well as the Queensland Police Service before applying for registration. The vehicle will not be able to be used unless the access approvals are held. Customer is responsible to read, and adhere to the Conditional registration guidelines. The costs for conditional registration are as follows, dependant on what access they require – again, this will be determined in the Conditional Registration Guide, and the customer’s decision. Each access has conditions attached to it,
so very important the customer is across the guide. Unrestricted Access : $288.90 Limited Access : $314.75 Zone Access: $193.35 – 80km radius restriction Registration Fees (6 or 12 months), CTP, stamp duty etc prices can be obtained via the quote tool, the below link to QT will assist. https://www.service.transport.qld.gov.au/quotetool/ ConditionalRegistrationQuote.jsp With respect to children <18 yrs. There are avenues for people permitting children to commit offences to be held accountable for the actions of those young people. For instance, if you permit a young person to ride an unregistered quad bike in areas where they need a licence – the fines may come your way. Permitting unlicensed riding may result in YOUR licence being disqualified. Not wearing a helmet is $400. If a serious incident occurs devastating penalties may be far more wide reaching than you have ever considered, particularly civil litigation – yes it is that serious. If your child is ignoring your rules, please take responsibility and parent accordingly. If you are in charge of another’s child consider the responsibility you have accepted. Adults, when caught drink/drug driving ANYWHERE on any motor vehicle you will go to court and be disqualified. That may affect your work and lifestyle. Is it really worth it?
So to reiterate, safety first. Get your quad registered, wear a helmet and Balgal Beach is definitely a no go for any vehicles. Thanks for your time, SGT Tony Jacobs 4006515 Officer In Charge Rollingstone Police Station Mobile 0456096305 Email: jacobs.anthonyr@police.qld.gov.au

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News In the last edition we were all advised of the retirement of our intrepid reporter, Ninger (AKA Neil Thompson). We would like to thank Neil for his contribution and dedication in writing great pieces of literary genius. Following Neil’s decision I have been bullied, coerced and threatened by Acting President Graham to take over these duties. I am grateful for the opportunity to enlighten everyone each month with stories of fish, parties and goings-on in the community. Having said that, in the last month there haven’t been many goings-on due to Covid 19 Restrictions and the Boat Ramp being ripped up.
DICKIE’S FISHING REPORT Well G’day folks. It has been a while since my last news, however under the threat of having my scotch bottle taken away, I will try my best to keep you guys up to date. Taylors Beach and estuary also Cattle and Crystal Creeks are fishing well for Grunter and the start of the winter Bream and Whiting run, with best baits being squid and yabbies. Also good catches of crabs with about 20 per cent being legal males. Also good catches of Barra and Mangrove Jack being taken in Crystal also Olera Creeks producing excellent Crabs.
Scrubby and Rollingstone Creeks were quiet however during the last month excellent bags of Crabs, both muddy and blue With the restrictions in place, we haven’t had an opportunity swimmers being landed. for the Comittee to meet or a monthly BBQ or market or a trip The inner shoals from Cattle Creek through to Mystic Sands, away, so there are not many stories to tell. also Paluma Shoals are still producing great catches of Spanish The situation with the restrictions looks more promising every Mackerel, also some grey and doggie Mackerel, best baits day. Once life, as we know it returns to normal our first priori- being pilchards or trawled white or silver spoons. ty, will be to discuss memberships that expire on the 30th June A few Coral Trout are also being landed off the shoals out 2020. from Mystic Sands, also good Grunter. Not a lot of reports Keep up to date on our Facebook page, Fisherman’s Landing from the Islands although Coral Trout, Sweetlip and large Fishing and Social Club, which is updated regularly. Trevally are being boated. The Boat Ramp repairs are now in full swing. Department of Transport and Main Roads have advised a finish date by 30th June 2020. We can then get back to boating and fishing in our little piece of paradise.

It is with much sadness that Rollingstone RSL said farewell to our Treasurer Jan Battersby. Jan and her husband Neville have relocated to Toowoomba for family reasons. Jan was such a dedicated and hard working member of our club who will be greatly missed. We hope to thank her more formally in the future when we hold our belated 20th anniversary celebration. Congratulations and thanks to Darrell Spann who has taken on the casual vacancy of Treasurer for Rollingstone RSL until our next AGM

Cyclone resilience program to kickstart regional job recovery The Palaszczuk Government has today announced a renewed regional Household Resilience Program as part of its Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs stimulus package. Premer Annastacia Palaszczuk said the highly successful program was being renewed after the programs proven results to support local jobs and save on household insurance premiums. “Master Builders recommended extending our highly successful Household Resilience Program, which provides grants to support people in cyclone affected areas to improve the resilience of their homes,” the Premier said. “This is the type of investment that provides long-term benefits while supporting construction jobs over the short-term. “That’s why today I can confirm we are extending this program with another $11.25 million, and I welcome the Federal Government’s commitment to provide $10 million of funding.” Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said 1,749 Queensland households from Bundaberg to the Cape had already seen their insurance premiums reduced by an average of $310. “We know that COVID-19 has hit budgets hard, the last thing we need right now is a cyclone to hit regional families when they’re down,” he said. “This will make a big difference for homeowners on low incomes, while stimulating the local jobs economy. “To date, 99 per cent of these cyclone-proofing upgrades have been done by local businesses. “Local companies like Elite Roofing from Bundaberg, Roof Seal FNQ in Townsville and Tropical Roofing and Drainage Solutions from Cairns are just a few of the 451 Queensland businesses who have benefited from these household renovations. “The Household Resilience Program has already stimulated $67.7 million expenditure across Queensland, and I look forward to these benefits continuing to flow with this latest update.” LUCINDA Minister de Brenni said renewing the highly successful Household Resilience Program was about jobs in regional Queensland. “The Household Resilience Program backs Queensland tradies, and its these local tradies who are best placed to tie down old-fashioned rooves, replace weak doors and seal leaky windows in the communities where they live,” he said. “This first stage stimulus boost will help Queenslanders like Mary, who’s retired and lives on her own in an old Townsville queenslander. “Mary is like 90 percent of Household Resilience Program recipients who would not have carried out these upgrades without this Palaszczuk Government grant. “Not only did Mary get her windows and doors protected for next cyclone season, she saved $330 on her insurance. Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell Good morning everyone, This month’s contribution is rather sketchy and will definitely need some editing as I am typing on the I Pad and keep hitting the wrong keys. The computer is away being repaired. Anyway, here goes! Quiet little Paluma, even quieter since the isolation forced by COVID 19, became abuzz with activity for nearly two weeks when a tree lopper came to town. Jason, a professional arborist, was engaged by residents Colin and Jill to bring down some dead trees whose limbs hung dangerously over their house and driveway. A few local men, eager for some action, volunteered their services and with very efficient teamwork, dragged the felled timber to be fed into Graham’s mulcher. Very soon word got around via the Paluma grapevine and Jason was engaged by at least ten other residents to fell or lop hazardous trees on their properties. So, the local crew was busily occupied for nearly two weeks, enjoying the chance to do some serious physical work as well as relieve the monotony of the daily routine. Many of the trees brought down were huge but had died a slow death having suffered severe internal stresses during the onslaught of Cyclone Yasi. They posed a serious threat of falling. Some of the bigger logs will go to form a safety barrier at the car park at Star Valley Lookout while mulch from the others will be used on Paluma gardens. Jason, who is based at the Gold Coast, as well as being an arborist works on movie sets, setting up stunts for film-makers. He came to Townsville to carry out some work and was stranded there when travel restrictions were imposed. So his misfortune was Paluma’s gain. Residents were relieved to have dangerous trees gone and workers and spectators enjoyed activity and entertainment while still being able to observe social distancing requirements.
To see more about Paluma, please visit our website, www.paluma.org The site is regularly updated with lots of information about plants, wildlife, walking tracks, recreational activities and much more. At the time of writing, Lake Paluma and Little Crystal Creek waterfall are closed, however we look forward to all being open and accessible in the not too distant future. Keep safe - keep well.

Following relaxation of some Covid 19 restrictions, our beautiful Balgal Beach was a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, on Sunday 17th May 2020. Who can blame them?
MAY OUT AND ABOUT
Damage caused by vehicles on our beaches during the recent long weekend. It is illegal for vehicles to be driven on the beach from South of Mystic Sands to The Landing.
It was a huge and humbling surprise to Frank Ferlazzo, Bec and Kristie at the Balgal Beach Pharmacy when Rollingstone & District Lions Club President, Ian Dow and Past President and Chair of Lions Medical Research Foundation, John Holliday, presented the Professor Ian Frazer Humanitarian Award to Frank—the Pharmacy Staff went above and beyond their usual excellent service during Covid 19 restrictions.
24th May 2020 The Railway Display is underway at the Centre. The display will progress as items become available and roofing and fencing are completed.
17th May 2020 Boat Ramp reconstruction works at The Landing are proceeding well. The works are due for completion at the end of June, weather permitting.
