Margaret Reardon passed away during June. We pass on our condolences to her family. There are many in our community who wouldn’t know Kelly Davis but for those of us who’ve lived here for some time, he was a familiar figure around town as the Paluma/Mt. Spec National Parks Ranger for many years. He was a truly lovely, hardworking, and committed man for this part of the world and he will be remembered fondly and sadly missed. David Birse hasn’t been at all well, but by now we hope things are improving for him. Our Chrissie (Centre Manager) has had her own problems as well with a re-occurring DVT presenting once again. She tells us she’s “all good again”. Madonna and Bryan Reinke are packing and sorting madly having bought a home in Townsville. Their health has been better and the time has come for them to move closer to family and health services. They’ve lived here for 42 years and in that time have given and given and given with every part of their beings. I could go on ad infinitum almost listing their kindnesses, help of almost any persuasion you could name, donations, volunteering, involvement, etc., etc., etc., from the School to the community per se, to the Stinger Net, to the RSL, to forming the Seniors and administering their activities, to Lawn Bowls, to Golf, to the Community Association, and no doubt some I’ve forgotten. For many years, Bryan was our local Mr. Fixit and Madonna baby-sat, ran messages, visited anyone in hospital, picked
up groceries for those unable – you name it, they did it. Madonna is a Life Member of both the Community Association and the Seniors, and Bryan is a Life Member of the Golf Club. They are well-loved and we will miss them. Bless you both, Madonna and Bryan………..and thank you. Another of our longest-residing locals is leaving town within a few weeks also. With the death of her husband, Nevis Foster is moving into private accommodation in Townsville to be closer family and health services. She has lived here 40 years and during that time contributed mightily towards many and varied activities within the community. Lately, has seen her not so active due to failing health and mobility so quite a few locals wouldn’t know her, but there are those that will and from all of us, we pass on our love and best wishes. Margie Ryder is presently out of action as she is booked in for surgery. She won’t be available for about 4 weeks. Gwen Cahill has retired from her many years of caring for wildflife. She has given much time to protecting and rehabilitating our bird and animal life and her dedication and commitment are an absolute credit to her. Her “job” will now be shared by Gaye Lovell and Chris Green. Due to pandemic restrictions, things have continued quietly for the past month at the Community Centre. However, with a “breakout” of sorts now in force, attendance at group activities at the Hall is back with a vengeance as things get back to “pre-Covid”

By the time you read this, the Winter Solstice will have passed: the shortest day of the year. Did any of you participate in the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance activity on the night of 21st June in which people were asked to count how many stars they could see within the Southern Cross? The activity was designed to raise awareness of light pollution and the many problems it causes. Perhaps some of you have braved the cold, clear winter nights to gaze at the sky and identify planets, stars and constellations sparkling against the blackness; to marvel at the Milky Way arching above and the mysterious, Coal Sack so impenetrably dark against the surrounding universe. We are so lucky to live away from cities, where the lights at night drown out the celestial lights. Dawn on these wintry days can be stupendous too, with mackerel clouds of pink, gold and flaming red developing in the east and spreading to cover the entire sky, while below, the sea becomes pink with reflected light. Along the last few kilometres of the Range Road and throughout the village, the beautiful White Hazelwood trees are in full bloom. These spectacular trees are covered densely with clusters of tiny white flowers while below, the ground is covered
in a carpet of fallen blossom. Satin Bowerbirds are back in large numbers and they, along with Rifle-birds are regular patrons of the food trays in many gardens. Many other birds are active in Paluma at present, a good time for bird-watchers to visit.
early 1990s. Kelly was an active member of the Paluma community and will be greatly missed. This seems to be the time of year that we are plagued by the wild-life. Residents on the acreage blocks report increasing visits by feral pigs creating havoc and destruction in their gardens. Everything from prized Anthuriums to well-established vegetable gardens have been dug up and eaten. Four little piglets and a parent were spotted on one property and boars with pretty nasty st tusks have been seen too. In the village, on a lesser scale, turkeys have been doing their bit to upset gardeners. Gingers and Paluma is emerging from its COVID 19 Anthuriums are popular targets while potted imposed isolation and with the lifting of plants are overturned and emptied travel restrictions, visitors are again coming regularly. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Good afternoon, I hope this finds you well. I would like to congratulate the Rollingstone Community Centre on securing $84,000 in federal and state funding to repair their flood-damaged fields. Cash grants such as this are proof that the Scott Morrison LNP Coalition - like the Deb Frecklingtonled Queensland LNP - are serious about ensuring North Queensland can grow and prosper. The Rollingstone Community Centre is a vital hub for residents and visitors who attend the many regular meetings, events and celebrations. It will be great to see Pace Park now safely have the
ability to attract a variety of outdoor activities for all age groups. I look forward to meeting people in Rollingstone as soon as possible to discuss how I - if elected - can be an effective voice for them not only with my Queensland LNP team but also the Morrison Government in Canberra. Please feel free to contact me at any time and I look forward to meeting you soon. WHAT IS MACKEREL CLOUD/SKY? A mackerel sky is a common term for a sky with rows of cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds displaying an undulating, rippling pattern similar in appearance to fish scales; this is caused by high altitude atmospheric waves . Wikipedia.org Thank you for using the term “mackerel clouds” Colwyn. I was unfamiliar with the term, and was intrigued as to what it meant. I therefore looked it up and discovered that it referred to the wonderful cloud formations I have seen whilst out walking. Ed.

This means you will need to store any weapons you own with a business such as Halls Firearms in Townsville or another licensed weapons owner until your new licence is approved, Rollingstone Station will not accept responsibility for your weapon at the police station, I can guarantee it will get rusty in this environment. May I suggest having someone put a reminder into your phone etc to bring up the renewal date Rollingstone Rag, July 2020
Weapons Licences are valid for FIVE years. PLEASE LOOK AT YOUR LICENCE RIGHT NOW AND CONFIRM THE EXPIRY DATE
unless you reside in a remote area. I am aware neither the Rollingstone nor Deeragun Post Offices are taking applications, however Ingham definitely is. There are some in Townsville to be sure, but I cannot provide you with a list at present sorry. This only started on the 18th of June, so by next edition I should be able to give you some information about participating postal services in Townsville accepting the applications.
for you. To apply for a weapons license – yes, even if you have let it expire, there are a few things that you must do. If you have a reason (primary producer) or wish to be a recreational shooter please go on line at www.police.qld.gov.au/units/weaponslicensing all your questions can be answered there.
It is great to see businesses opening up further as COVID restrictions ease. Please understand if you are asked to supply identification at businesses it is something that business is required to do. Your information is not accessed unless there is a need to do so, ie contact tracing once a person has tested positive to Covid19. Thanks all,
The big change is where you lodge your application. - PARTICIPATING postal agencies are the places to now lodge applications, no longer at police stations

FISHERMAN'S LANDING FISHING & SOCIAL CLUB Welcome to the July Edition of The Fishing Club Rolly Rag Report Coronavirus restrictions are slowly being eased, which is starting to bring life back to some level of normality. We were able to hold our first committee meeting recently, first one in a few months. That meeting was mainly about getting the committee together to start planning for when restrictions are eased. We have pencilled in Friday 28th August 2020 for the AGM – if Coronavirus keeps behaving itself the way it has been, we are hoping restrictions will be lifted and that will allow Dickie and his staff at The Landing to let us get together for the AGM. It will be AGM at 6 pm, in that case, followed by our monthly BBQ – 6.30 pm (ish). Only members can vote for the election of the committee. The usual $15 fee will apply for non-members attending the BBQ. Membership – all Members have been sent Membership renewals for the coming year. Your current membership expires as at 30th June this year. Nomination Forms for all committee positions, which will be vacated for the AGM, have also been sent to all current members. Please email any interest or questions to fishermanslandingfishngclub@gmail.com or contact Graham. Please return your completed Membership Forms and the Membership Fee in a sealed envelope to the Landing addressed to the Secretary, Fishermans Landing Fishing Club or handed in at our next BBQ. Monthly BBQ’s: We are hopeful of an announcement shortly that the Government will further lift restrictions, and that up to 100 people can gather in one place. Dickie has advised that when that becomes available, we will be able to recommence our monthly BBQs. We will keep informed regarding any new developments. Watch Facebook and your emails.
Rollingstone Rag, July 2020
Markets: Our next market is Saturday 4th July from 8am at The Esplanade, Balgal Beach. Come on down to the Market and enjoy yummy Bacon and Eggs rolls, Mon’s Coffee and some great offerings from our stall holders. ALL Covid 19 Guidelines will be adhered to. Community Service: Our secretary noticed that the flagpoles at the cenotaph required some repairs due to some severe rusting at the base of the poles. He contacted member Brett Collinson (Fishing Club Member), to see if he could have a look at it and advise what needed to be done to fix. Brett went one better and told Neil he would fix it. Good on you Brett, appreciate that. Boat Ramp: . We have been advised that the work on the Boat Ramp has been completed ahead of schedule and the ramp is now open. See photo on back page. We can get onto the water and start weighing-in fish. Just a reminder if you catch some fish, weigh them in at the landing and write them up on the weighin sheets and the Brag Board. As you can see, whilst things have been very quiet around the traps for a while, we are starting to work on things with the expectation that restrictions will soon be relaxed. Dickies Fishing Report: Well G’day folks. WHALES, WHALES and more WHALES, over thirty thousand of these beautiful animals heading our way for the yearly calving season in Northern waters. Please check up on the viewing regulations regarding boating to close to them. With a bit of luck, we may see them basking close to shore around the Rollingstone Creek entrance out by the beacon. Good reports of Garfish schools coming into our creeks, with lots of activity along Balgal Beach. Both short nose and orange long nose types being caught. Great eating if you know
how to prepare them. They are also one of the best baits when going for Mackeral on a slow trawl or bottom bait for Trout, Grunter and Sweetlip. Excellent catches of Crab in all the creeks, however, both Rollingstone, Hencamp and Scrubby Creeks seem to have share farmers checking or stealing your crab pots. They will be caught one day and will receive a substantial fine. Fishwatch hotline 1800 017 116 www.fisheries.qld.gov.au Have had some good reports of good Grunter and Sweetlip being landed on the inner shoals. Paluma Shoals have been fishing well especially for Doggie and Spanish Mackeral. The weather has not been good for island trips, however, one brave soul managed to get in an early morning trip to Herald and Acheron Islands and scored some good Nannygai and Sweetlip, also an excellent Spanish and GT. Due to the windy weather, the visibility for snorkelling and diving around the islands has been very trying and not good viewing or spearfishing conditions. Lots of Queenfish in Rollingstone Creek and if you can get 3 or 4 people using poppers to stir them up, you will have a great time and they are not bad eating either. If you have out of date flares or EPIRBS, you can leave them at Fishermans Landing for safe disposal. That is it for this month. Remember to watch out for whales, especially if boating at night. When out fishing at night, it is recommended to put in a trip sheet with Ingham or Townsville Coast Guard https://coastguard.com.au/ flotilla/qf8-townsville/ and https:// coastguard.com.au/flotilla/qf14-ingham/ For further information regarding our club please contact Graham 0428 416 060 Tight lines and Stay Safe Regards- Lovey x 18

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL
Hi Community I hope this finds everyone fit and well. We are on school holidays after a very historic term. We started Term 2 with home learning and finished off with 5 weeks of school. I’m very proud of the way the students and families have coped with all the change and disruptions over the past 10 weeks. As a school, we continue to place
a real focus on reading, writing and numeracy. The students have all exceeded their goals and expectations for this term. I’ll leave you to read some new work from a few of our promoters. This term Prep and Year 1 had to write about their favourite food while everyone else learnt about persuasion and had to create a cereal package and write a persuasive pitch. Enjoy Andrew Stallman

Dinorama Is your life plain and dull? Then rush into stores and buy Dinorama, the best cereal in the world. Hi my name is Diamond the Dinosaur and I eat Dinorama all day every day. It spiced up my life, it turned my frown upside down, my day used to be boring as well, just like yours will be if you don’t buy Dinorama right now. When I did buy it I loved the taste of those fruity tooty excitements on my tongue. Oh and the look, as soon as I saw this on television I just kept nagging and nagging and nagging my mum until she bought it for me. Did I forget to tell you there’s a special surprise? So listen up and hear about the magnificent mouth-watering taste of Dinorama because you will be big and strong like me. The taste of Dinorama cereal is just out of this world! Each bite of my cereal, ohhhhh it’s just lovely. One bite and you’ll get a crickle and a crunch or a chewy chomp of mellow marshmallows inside of your mouth, it tastes amazeballs. Did you know that there are only natural ingredients inside Dinorama? Such as crunchy corn straight from the farm, squishy marshmallows handmade straight from the factory, made with delicate care. Oh did I tell you about how the marshmallows have a fruity tooty, tingy tangy taste to them. It’s just for a bit of excitement to turn your plain dull life in the morning, fun again. Hey I like the look of Dinorama as well. Have you ever had a cereal that has great taste and looks amazing? Well Dinorama’s look is just super sensational, it even looks like a piece of art that should be hung up in a museum. It has cute, baby pink diamonds and guess what, you know how I told you about marshmallows before, well this is where it comes in because the diamonds are marshmallows, baby pink marshmallows! Did you realize that the dinosaurs are corn? So they’re healthy and they look so cute too. So listen up while I tell you about the surprise. So parents, do your kids have an annoying toy that you just want to abolish? Well, in every box of Dinorama you buy you will get a free squishy, ishy dinosaur, just like me, only smaller. You can play with these cute little guys all day long from summer to winter, they’re great for the whole family. You can squish me pull me and do all sorts of things, and they are whisper quiet too. There are so many of my friends to collect and they come in all sorts of colours such as red, blue, green, orange, purple, pink and yellow. There are just so many to collect. A special offer to make your day, if you buy 6 boxes and bring in your receipts, we’ll give you a free dinosaur pillow just like me, only smaller. They’re so adorable you won’t want to let go of them, they’re as cute as puppies. So I’ll meet you in stores when you buy Dinorama. It tastes amazeballs and it looks like a piece of art and you’ll have fun collecting all of my friends. So if you want your life to be spiced up then buy Dinorama now! Remember Dinorama will turn your frown upside down.
Written by Mia Lilly McNeill Above left is some independent writing from two of our Prep students. It is hard to believe how far they have come in such a short time, remembering that at the start of the year they couldn’t read or write independently. They are like little sponges! MERGING TRAFFIC
Ladies & Gentlemen, I have been requested by a local resident to publish an article in the Rolly Rag to again explain the laws that relate to “Merging Traffic” where two lanes merge into one - as the resident was frustrated that so many drivers do not know the Rules or put their own Incorrect interpretation into practice. The merging rules are explained below. I will start with Section 148 of the TORUM Road Rule Sub-Section 1. “Giving way when moving from 1 marked lane or line of traffic to another marked lane or line of traffic”. “A driver who is moving from 1 marked lane (whether or not the lane is ending) to another marked lane must Give Way to any other vehicle travelling in the same direction as the driver in the marked lane to which the driver is moving”. What this Section means is that if you are driving on a road where there are two or more lanes traveling in the same direction and you intend to change lanes (right or left) you MUST indicate your intention to change lanes and then change lanes when it is safe to do so. Now one has to slow down to let you in. You do not merge in the direction that you wish until you can do so safely and the other driver does not have to slow down to let you in or should not have to apply his brakes to avoid colliding with the rear of your vehicle, see Example 1 below.
Sub-Section 2. “A driver on a road with two or more lines of traffic travelling in the same direction as the driver, and who is moving from one line of traffic, to another of traffic, MUST give way to any vehicle travelling in the same direction as the driver in the line of traffic to which the driver is moving”. This Section is applicable to multi lane roads. You’ll notice that the driver in the left lane has a dotted line in front of his when he is about to merge, so he cannot merge into the right lane until he gives way to the vehicles travelling in the right lane. So PLAN AHEAD and merge before you get to the dotted line
Section 149 of the TORUM Road Rules reads, “Giving way when lines of traffic merge into a single line of traffic”. “A driver in a line of traffic that is merging with 1 or more lines of traffic travelling in the same direction as the driver MUST give way to a vehicle in another line of traffic if any part of the vehicle is ahead of the driver’s vehicle”. You can see in the attached diagram, Exampe 3, that vehicle “A” is ahead of vehicle “B”, but the legislation DOES NOT permit the driver in vehicle A to accelerate (and exceed the speed limit) to get in front of the other vehicle, as the vehicle behind vehicle B will have to give way to vehicle A which would be in front of him.

ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. G’day Rollingstone, Earlier this month, I received a phone call to assist a desperate lady with 3 kids who had fled a domestic violence situation in Brisbane. Some kind Locals rallied around to supply clothing, bedding, household appliances, money, food and pushbikes for the kids. One generous lady gave a voucher to purchase clothes and shoes for the kids. Thank You All. Domestic Violence has seemed to increase during this Pandemic. I received another phone call from a frantic local lady informing me that her husband had collapsed with a suspected heart attack. I was asked to go to The Landing and get the Defibrillator and on arrival at the landing, I attempted to open up the box but the plastic
device broke. I then had to borrow a screwdriver from Dickies to open up the box. When I arrived at the ladies place, the Ambulance and police were already there. “Thank God”. It turns out that her husband had had a stroke. He is now home and on the mend. Hopefully the Defibrillator is made more accessible.

The Rollingstone Rag Your local magazine Who are the Editors? Kerrie has been Editor of The Rag for many years. She is a member of numerous Clubs in the area and she “knows stuff” about when, why , where and how events are going to happen. She also has many of the hierarchy of those Clubs on speed dial! The information that she has at her fingertips is invaluable for us in our work. I have been Editor for about five years and am passionate that we should keep the content local to our distribution areas whilst also keeping the magazine modern and relevant to all age groups. Jennifer joined our team two months ago and comes from a Corporate background. She has revamped our little newsletter and has modernised the layouts and the general appearance of the publication. She has done a wonderful job. Between the three of us, through discussion, courtesy, collaboration and helping each other, we have published this month’s magazine. It has been a mammoth task and no doubt there will be further changes to come!

Why is the Magazine printed in black and white? 131 444 Cost. The magazine is provided free to Rollingstone, Toomulla , Paluma , Mutarnee, Crystal Creek and Bluewater communities. Advertising pays some of the cost, Townsville City Council supports us with supplying paper and the Community Centre pays the rest. The cost between black and white or colour printing is many hundreds of dollars each month.
How many people assist with production of The Rag? Lots! There are advertisers, contributors, editor, RTC staff, proof readers, folders and packers and delivery people. At a quick count, maybe fifty! 95% of those are volunteers. Many of them work as well. Thank you all so much.
Why do you bother with the printed magazine when people can find out what they want to know on the internet? Many of our population do not look things up

What good hearted marvellous people live in this Community. Some of our Lions and Volunteers have been assisting in building a large storage room at the rear of the Lion’s Den. This is close to completion and will be a great asset to our growing Club. We are still not able to conduct meetings as yet but we are keeping in contact with each other. We are still proactive in assisting people in the Community with Lawn Mowing, Tree Clearing and General Maintenance. These tasks are much appreciated by the elderly. on the internet as they do not have or cannot afford internet access. Some people read National and International news online but other than facebook, there is often very little local news online. However, many people tell us that they enjoy receiving The Rag, reading the articles and keeping informed with the goings on and future events. Yesterday when I was working in the Rag office, wrestling with our new format, I overheard a man talking to Chris and Mark. He explained that he was relatively new to the area but the thing he thought was great and that he really enjoyed was receiving his copy of The Rollingstone Rag each month because he found out about all sorts of local things and events. He also commented that he loved reading the articles. Thank you , whoever you are. You made my day of being chained to the computer suddenly seem so much more relevant and worthwhile.
