I would publicly like to thank those folk who were so kind and supportive to Gordon and me during my recent debilitation and indisposition.

Dear Ms Von Wald, Thank you for your emails of 7 March, 5 June 2019 to myself and your email to Cr Ryder of 23 June 2019 regarding access to the Rollingstone Community Centre during the monsoonal weather event. I offer my sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to you. I was of the understanding that we had discussed this matter in person at the Division 1 Community Council and that a response was going to be put in writing on my behalf from the relevant officers.

Geoff & Lynne Prytherch, Chrissie Martin, Bob & Judy Holt, Linda & Denis Cleaver are earth angels. Sue Von Wald

Correspondence received by RaDCA from the Mayor of Townsville City Council and Cr Margie Ryder in relation to issues affecting the Rollingstone and Balgal Beach areas is provided for the information of all residents. Editor

I am advised that the Rollingstone Community Centre and surrounding road network are designed for Q100 immunity, the February Rainfall event was considered to be higher than a Q500 event. Council is confident that the Community Centre will be accessible during any further wet weather events and Council’s Emergency Management team will develop a procedure for the community access and egress should there be another event above Q100. Raising the road is not considered a viable option as this would cause existing properties to hold water for longer periods as there is minimal fall to existing drainage outlets. I am advised that Council will ensure that existing table drains are cleared of debris and mowed on a scheduled basis. Again, I apologise for the delay and trust that this explains Council’s position on the matter. Yours Sincerely,

Cr Jenny Hill Mayor From: Councillor Support Sent: Wednesday, 24 July 2019 5:11 PM To: Margie L. NOTES FROM THE R.T.C

Rollingstone State School

Hi Community, School holidays have come and gone again. I hope everyone enjoyed their break from school routine for a few weeks. Our family caught up with friends and family and I managed to complete my Pool Shed which has been on the Agenda for some time. However, I do have to think seriously about a diet after Mrs Bustow’s hubby thought my pool filter with a circumference of 2100mm, looked like me squatting down contemplating the next move in the construction of the above shed. My father has been giving a helping hand and although I think his real enjoyment came from spending MY money at the Hardware Store instead of his. I’m not quite sure we needed all those items he so randomly threw into the trolley. So next time you have to fork out money for school clothes, school books etc for your offspring, console yourself with the thought that in the future you may have an opportunity for “Payback”. We ended Term 2 on a great note with Under 8’s day. It was one of the magic moments that I will treasure for some time to come. It was a wonderful atmosphere, full of creativity, magic, mayhem and most importantly fun. It was awesome having the SES and Rural Fire Brigade and Jodie from North Townsville Community Hub Playgroup join our activities. A big thank you to all the parent/carers for joining us on the day. While on the topic of community, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone for your continued support with the school. Like the wonderful support on Under 8’s Day, parents and past students have been down helping with gardening, our local Constabulary has been down to visit the students and community volunteers continue to help with reading. Our local Golf Club, Rollingstone’s Big Four, The Community Centre and Northreach continue to help organise and make kind donations for the school and students. We are visiting Pace Farming for an excursion this term and we continue to have a strong relationship with our local Lions Club. Actually, I had a surprise visitor, Mr Ian Dow call in over the holidays to drop off a ‘donation’ from the Lions Club. He certainly knows how to make an appearance, leaving my visitors ‘gobsmacked’ and a beaming principal and school. However, we will talk more about this in due course. A school cannot be an island and our relationships with our local community is of upmost importance and please don’t hesitate in calling in. We truly value your support. Just a reminder there is a Playgroup which meets at the school every Tuesday of school term from 9am to 11am. All young children are welcome to come along. Jodie, from the North Townsville Community Hub also runs a playgroup every Thursday at the Community Centre. I’ll leave you with a few pictures from our Under 8’s day…...Andrew Stallman

What a magic time of year! Its sugar cane harvesting season, the pineapples are looking ready to pick and a sea of travellers are heading to our region to enjoy the spoils of our mild winter. Every year the cold snap catches me by surprise, but it’s a pleasant change waking up to the frosty dew on the grass on a cold winter’s morning. In recent weeks, we have seen our population swell as the Big 4 Rollingstone Caravan Park and free camping locations fill up with holiday seekers choosing to take the driving option to explore our little piece of paradise. Recently I had the pleasure of attending both the Pioneers of the Townsville Northern Beaches Luncheon and the Rollingstone and District Seniors Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea. This year’s Pioneers lunch was put on to recognise the talents of those who have helped shape our community and I must congratulate the members of the Rollingstone and District Community Association for organising such a brilliant event. I must also not forget the hard work undertaken by the Lions Club in the kitchen. Every year the Biggest Morning Tea grows and last year it grew to a size where it exceeded the hall’s capacity which lead the committee to pre-sell tickets this year as a way to manage numbers. This year did not disappoint, selling out as expected and attracting a crowd eager to have a good time. With a ‘50’s’ theme, we got to see some great rock and roll inspired costumes. A bucket load of money was raised through the cent sale and of course the auctioning of the decorated tea cups that people brought along. Thrown in the deep end as the auctioneer, I quickly had to learn the ropes and found I was still talking quickly when I returned to the office that afternoon. Thank you to all that attended, it was brilliant to see all proceeds go to the Cancer Council of Queensland. During this busy time of year, I urge people to take their time out on the roads with significant road upgrades occurring in the Bluewater area along the Bruce Highway. This coupled with extra traffic on our highway makes for a dangerous combination for those not driving to the conditions. I understand that road works and slow moving vehicles like haul out tractors and caravans can be annoying but it’s much better to be five minutes late than not arrive at all. On the political front, we are in budget mode after the State Government handed down their budget. We have been fortunate in Hinchinbrook to have secured some good windfalls for road infrastructureand education, but in the coming weeks I’ll be heading down to the budget estimate hearings to ask the pointed questions in our plight to secure more for our region. Nick Dametto MP.

Welcome to August and hopefully it will start to warm up a little, enough of the cold! Sadly we have lost one of our friends & long time residents of Toomulla…Shirley Rouse aged 84. There will be a few of us that will miss Shirley’s emails with her wonderful stories, jokes & photos. Shirley was the Secretary Treasurer for many years of the Toomulla Progress Association & also the Fishing Club. Shirley’s pride & joy was her gardens & plants that she loved especially her Dessert Roses & Maiden Hair Ferns. We are deeply saddened for Eddie who has not only lost his beautiful wife but his very best friend. Our thoughts go out to husband Eddie, Shirley’s lovely sister Wendy, their two sons Colin, Tony & their families. RIP Shirley. Keep an eye out in the mailbox for a flyer for a Fun Day in Toomulla Park for the kids, celebrating the opening of the newly renovated playground area. There will be games, sausage sizzle & lots of giveaways for the kids. Father’s Day Raffle tickets will be on sale this month…..$1 per ticket or 6 for $5. Good Luck. From my trip to Monkey Mia. If you get the opportunity you should visit this resort. You can interact with the Dolphins three times a day with each time being different. The Dolphins talk to you and as I said get so close you are tempted to touch them. They have named the Dolphins that come in to greet you and they all have there own personalities. If you see a Dolphin you like you can have your photo taken with it if the Dolphin stays still long enough. You can also get a fact sheet on that particular Dolphin telling you all about it’s habits, diet and actions. These animals sleep upside down and can swim on each side. They can eat up to 12kg of fish each day which means they have to be on the hunt continually. Monkey Mia Resort is very relaxing and it has a number of activities to keep you entertained. While you are staying at the Resort you do not have to leave for anything at all as it is fully catered. I would go back again only next time stay longer. If you are looking for a place for relaxation and lazy days this is it. See you in the great outdoors...Chris.

Rollingstone & District Seniors What glorious weather we have been having out here in our little spot of paradise. Yes I hear you grumble; toooo cold but what the heck it is only for so short a time and most of us don’t have winter gear anyway. I moan and I am wearing shorts and a t-shirt with short sleeves. Duh. I like it as it gives me that get up and go outside into the garden, prune trees, all those jobs too hard for the heat. The Seniors had a great turn out to the morning when we entertained Magnetic Island group. I unfortunately could not attend as had an Education talk but by the time I got there all the food was gone so guessing that it went over very well. Big thanks to the people who took the time to cook for the masses. We will let you know closer to time when we are returning a visit but I know there is talk of, if folk want to spend the night over on Maggie, they have the option. A little visit to our island paradise. We are off to visit the Ingham group this coming Thursday, car pool as the bus is booked. We are hoping for another wonderful day. The Seniors week is coming up so hope you have let Wendy C know if you need a seat on the bus to go to the luncheon. Then the next month is the Pineapple Festival so everyone gears up for that. We have had a few members unwell so hope for a speedy recovery for them and our thoughts went out to Terri who lost her companion. This growing old sucks!!!! Meanwhile embrace each day and thank the Lord we are alive to enjoy the blue sky, green grass, swaying trees, blue sea, plants, gorgeous flowers and all the creatures big and small that make up our magnificent home land. Until next time ciao. Would any Seniors be interested in a trip to Winton, Longreach and Emerald? I am considering dates for end August to early September, probably 10 to 12 days. If there is enough interest, I will look at costs of hiring our own bus, 22 to 25 seater and looking at accommodation and other expenses.

2019 PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL BAKING COMPETITON This year we are changing our regular Competition slightly and opting for entries of pineapple decorated CAKES, COOKIES, CUPCAKES/MUFFINS and SCONES only! Decorate them up and or the plates the scones are on for example, pineapple style! As the entries are sold after the Comp. to support local projects, it became apparent last year that most folk found it difficult to take home entries that included ingredients such as jellies and creams and cheesecakes that require refrigeration. So this year please avoid using cake coverings that require such refrigeration, as most people don't attend manned with eskies!. Normal icings are fine! The Comp.will have two judges and will offer a 1st Prize of $100, 2nd Prize of $50 and 3rd Prize of $25. The prizes are not for different categories but for the over all Comp. So...have some fun with your unique artistry and intuitive and join in the Comp.! Bring your entry straight to the demountable office, near the Hall and make sure your plate is marked with your name and number by 10am! Festival is Sept 21st. Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News

Hello and welcome. We have a bit to get through this month Cyril please pay attention as there will be a short examination at the conclusion. The numbers were down at the 28 June End of Month Club BBQ but a very good time was had by all with good company and great food on offer. A big thank you to Ron Condren (Condo) and Greg Sant for donning the aprons in the absence of our regular chef, Robert Pratt. Condo cooked the snags just right which shows there is a first time for everything and his steaks were a real treat. Greg did an excellent job cooking the rissoles and drew many favourable comments. I cannot recall who did the fish and onions but it all came together beautifully, well done team. Thanks again Col Pace for the salads, watermelon and pineapple as well as his normal rissoles which are always a big hit. This month the lovely ladies truly outdid themselves in the salads and the hot side-dishes department. There were great salads, hot dishes of all varieties and then cream cakes to go with the fruit. Thank you all, much appreciated. Peter Hall won the Senior category in the Club Monthly Fishing Competition. The Members’ Draw has now jackpotted to $75.00 after number 15 was drawn and the owners David Cahalan and Judith Gordon were not present. We know, Cyril, that David was over in WA helping to keep the mining sector afloat and Judith was probably in the Cardio department at the Mater Hospital saving some poor soul’s life but rules is rules. If you are not there, ya dip out! Interestingly, the previous month number 28 popped out of the barrel owned by Greg and Bronwyn Sant but at that time they were cruising around Europe. We welcome back Vice-President Graham Milliken and Therese who have been touring around Eastern Australia for the past 5 months. Glad you remembered where home is and it is great to see you both so happy and with such big smiles. .Who is the Club Member who has worked around heavy earth-moving machinery for probably most of his working life and should be able to tell the difference between diesel and unleaded petrol but who has on three separate occasions; yes three; put petrol in three separate diesel vehicles at the bowser? Gee Robbo, you were lucky Gwen was with you last time to push the Cruiser for you. Don’t forget that Club Memberships are now due for renewal. The current rate of renewals is quite pleasing but the more members the better we can do for you. There have also been some new members join. Welcome Wayne Truscott, Bill Daskalou, Ron and Khwan Williams and Marion Nicholson. Welcome to your new Club. Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been set down for Friday 30 August at The Landing which will then be followed by our normal End of Month Club BBQ. All committee positions will be declared vacant at the AGM and a new committee will be elected. Please consider either nominating yourself for a particular position or nominate another Club Member whom you feel will do a good job on the committee. Please don’t just re-nominate the current committee, we need fresh eyes with new and refreshing ideas, no preconceived ideas of how things are done or personal prejudices to keep our great little club ticking along. The Mystic Sands Golf Resort has been booked for our New Years Eve Party on Tuesday 31 December. The finer details will be advised to you all in due course. In the past this has been a great night out and culminates in a huge fire-works display at mid-night. Try not to miss this event. Your meal, live music, fire-works and courtesy bus are all supplied free for Club members but you pay for your own drinks. It is worth going along just to watch Rebecca Hutchinson dance bare footed then complain to all about her sore feet. Balgal Beach Market Day on Saturday 6 July dawned with grey sky but the market went ahead and by early morning the sun was shining brightly. There were a few new stall holders and the locals turned out to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Committee Members present considered these were one of the best markets so far in terms of the number of people who attended. At one stage you could have said there were as many dogs (on leashes of course) as there were people present. Greg Sant excelled in the cooking of the Big Breakfast and has now firmly cemented himself into that position for future functions. The other team members who did a great job were Graham Milliken, Vicki Fischer, Lyn Woolard and Bronwyn Sant. Thank you all for a great effort. Now Members, the reason you have read this far is for Dickie’s Fishing News so here it is, warts and all. This month Dickie has waivered from his normal newsy “where they are biting” segment to vent his and your Committee’s sheer frustration at the inaction taken thus far to repair the pontoon walkway and even to replace a simple security/safety light near the boat ramp. In your Committee, if something is broken or need repair, we fix it, we have the contacts and financial resource to do so but unfortunately with the pontoon and light saga we are powerless to act as those items do not belong to the Club. All we can do is send reminders ad nauseum. How many Ergon workers does it take to change a light bulb? None, they don’t’! Well giday folks; after being pressured and abused by you know who, that’s right the bloke who can do a double backward somersault with a half twist over the very low fence around the cenotaph at the beach front and only breaking 3 ribs and loose an amount of skin off his shin, I am again forced to do another report this month. The whales have started to arrive although none have been seen in close but they will come, a whole thirty thousand plus of them so check up on the rules governing these beautiful animals reference boating close to them. The Queenfish are back on around Rattlesnake and Herald Islands also good catches reported of Spanish and Doggie Mackeral around Phillips, Lorne Reefs and around Acheron Island. The bottom fishing around Acheron, Fly and Falcon Islands is producing excellent catches of Coral Trout and Sweet-lip using fresh baits, squid and pilchards. Nannygai a plenty on the inner shoals from Paluma Shoals north to Crystal Creek with a lot of 38 cm catches having to be returned unless you can turn a 38 cm Nannygai into a 40 cm fish and still convince the fishing inspectors who travel our waters frequently. The crabbing in all the creeks have been of significance over the past two months of winter with good catches of both muddies and blue swimmers being caught in Cattle, Crystal, Olera and Rollingstone Creeks. Hencamp Creek is also producing the odd Barra and lots of Whiting as well. Apart from a few days, the weather has not been kind to off shore boating with the winds getting up to 20 kts by 10 am which makes it very uncomfortable and at times dangerous for those 12 to 14 ft tinnies. Road Tec have done a good job repairing our boat ramp however, Council has been failing badly in regards to reinstalling the walk way to the pontoon and Ergon Energy are having trouble finding a ladder to climb up the pole on the boat ramp to replace the blown bulb. Your Club paid $5000 to Ergon in the first place to install the pole and boat ramp light. Boaties launching their vessel prior to first light need to be aware of the 4 meter plus crocs in the boat ramp area just waiting for breakfast. Well, that is it for the month, don’t forget to put in a trip sheet with Ingham or Townsville Coast Guards or at the very least tell someone responsible where you are proceeding to and the time you intend to return. You can leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at The Landing for safe disposal. Safe boating always and tight lines, regards…...Dickie. On 3rd July President Di advised you all by Email of a public meeting with Councillor Ryder at 11am on Saturday 10th August on the Lower Deck at The Landing. This meeting was not organized by our Club but at the request of Cr Ryder so come along with your preferably written comments/grievances or whatever. Your Committee will be asking questions of her about the pontoon debacle. Mr. Nick Dametto, MP, State Member for Hinchinbrook has also expressed a desire to attend this meeting. Please put this dateP21 and time in your diaries or behind the dunny door; a reminder Email will be sent to all Members prior to the meeting but as we are all aware, you don’t open your Emails. Hey Cyril, that bit at the beginning about an exam was only a hoax. Until next month, NingerP21

Mens and Ladies Closed Club Championship has been played and won by Darren Beavis and Maree King. July monthly medal winners were : Anja Devereaux,John O’Kane and Ken Dickensen. Our Ladies pennant team would like to thank everyone for supporting them in 2019. Buying raffle tickets, lucky numbers and donation of prizes. Without this support; the ladies would not be able to represent the club in Mackay for Pennants. Just attending and spreading the word about our club and wonderful course can only be a positive outcome regardless of the result. Special welcome to all our new members and some returnees, hope you all enjoy the course and company. See you all on the course soon Isn’t it great to hear all the fantastic compliments regarding the condition of course, its ambience, great food and friendly people. Keep up the fantastic work everyone with special thanks to Tony Cochrane, Wayne McCarthy, Charlie, Emma and of course Mick,Lisa and family. Till next time…...Hit ém long and straight but most of all enjoy!......Gurdie

LINE DANCERS Gail Blackley was the initiative behind the birth of Line Dancing and surrounds. It all began in early September 2000 with seven ladies, three of whom still attend today, including Gail. Over the course of nineteen years many things have changed. Numbers have reached thirty on any given Monday morning, so the attraction of moderate exercise for both mind and body makes for an enjoyable and productive time. The sessions encourage you to work at your own pace. We have a catalogue of one hundred and seventy-five dances and most of them can be interchanged with two different tunes. So strong is the pull, that some of our dancers who have left the area have returned. A few travel from Townsville, Bluewater and Toomulla. Our cost is simply the Hall hire but occasionally we chip in to cover the costs of a light morning tea. Whilst our average age is seventy two now, anyone is welcome to try out. We have so much talent in the group and overall it is both a learning and endearing experience.

GARDEN GNOMES Once again, a little group got together and cleaned the gardens up. We consisted of locals and four lovely people on holidays. Our helpers included Joan and Alan Beaton, Lorna and Bill Armstrong and their chainsaw (without which we would not have achieved what we did, so a very big thank you to them), as well as Gwen and Robbo (locals from the corner) who helped with the use of their trailer as it took four loads. A big thank you also to locals Marg, Carol, Merle, Shirley, Milja, Monica, Joe and of course Bob, all locals without whom it would not have happened. I wish to thank you all very much…….Deb

Gidday Rollingstone “And as he looked at the mother’s face, she knew. She knew from that moment of silence…from his eyes…from the way he was trying to find the words…she knew her little girl was gone and never coming back. She leaned into the father’s arms and together they wept for a life that never really had the chance to start…a life they had made. He walked them back into the bedroom where the paramedics were still kneeling. He scooped up the tiny bundle and gently passed her to the mother. There were no words, only tears. There was no sense in any of it, no warning, no reason. Everyone had tried…the father, their friends, the Ambos…even he had knelt beside the child and tried. There was only sorrow and regret. Then the moment came and in the father’s bravest struggle, he lifted his daughter in his arms and carried her for the last time. As they reached the car which was to carry her away, he passed her gently to the mother. A kiss on the forehead, a stroke of a cheek and a goodbye that no parent should have to bear. And through tear filled eyes and a broken sobbing heart, the mother pleaded to him. ‘I didn’t even get to know her.’ ‘You knew her better than anyone did.’ ‘But what am I going to do now.’ ‘You’re going to grieve…and cry…and talk…and remember. And you’re going to keep going. You’re going to find a way to be stronger that you ever thought you could be…and you’re going to keep going. But don’t think about any of that now. Right now… just breathe.” You don’t need to know who these people are or where they’re from. You don’t need to know any more than what you’ve read… that a child died…a cot death…SIDS…that a family’s hopes and dreams changed in an instant…that grief and pain and sorrow – sometimes they have to be faced…sometimes they can’t be avoided…that babies die and I wish I could explain it…but I can’t… that life really is fragile and precious…and it should be celebrated and respected with every breath you get to take…and with every breath you get to share with someone else. Stay safe……….Goughy

Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell As I looked at the garden lit by last night’s full moon, then at the moon itself, so dazzlingly brilliant in the clear winter air I reflected on that day, 50 years ago, when Man first stepped on the moon. For hundreds of millennia the moon has inspired religious worship, art, music, love-songs, moon madness, mysteries and science fiction. Then in those few momentous days in July 1969, science fiction became reality. It seemed so surreal, so impossible yet there we were, seeing it all unfold before our eyes. Do you remember what you were doing on that day we all became the first people of the ‘Space Age’? I clearly remember watching the event, spellbound, with my two young sons and a friend on her TV, (her screen was bigger than mine). Three years ago, I visited the NASA facility in Houston, Texas and was surprised to see how small the (then) Mission Control room was – certainly not as vast as TV images suggest - and how primitive the computers were by the standards of today. I could only marvel at the amazing ingenuity and achievements of all involved in the space programme. That most of us were able to view this incredible drama on television is another source of wonder: remember, television had come to Australia less than fifteen years earlier. What has all that got to do with Paluma? Well nothing really; the moon landing is something we all on the Northern Beaches and Paluma share and so is the pleasure of living away from the big city lights enabling us the privilege of viewing the moon and myriad stars and planets sparkling against clear, black skies. Life is returning to normal in Paluma now that restoration work on Mount Spec Road has been completed. Visitor numbers have increased and it is good to see family groups making use of the picnic and playground facilities on the Village Green; bird-watchers with cameras at the ready roaming through the village in search of our iconic birds; people exploring along the local rainforest tracks or venturing further afield with bush-walking groups using Paluma as their base. Open days at the High Ropes course attract the brave-hearted seeking a personal challenge; hungry visitors relish great coffee and delicious home-cooked meals at the Rainforest Inn while those wanting unique ceramics are drawn to Len Cook’s recently refurbished ceramics studio. The Winter Solstice dance, with music provided by Wattle n’ Gum was a lively and enjoyable night. It was well attended as was the Market held on the following day, 30th June. Stall-holders reported a successful day and the sausage sizzle exceeded expectations. The next big event will be the Paluma Push, the annual cycling challenge. This will be held on Sunday 21st July and will be reported on in the September issue of Rollingstone Rag. Our display of historic photos is open free to the public every Tuesday between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm. In the Community Hall. All are welcome to come in and browse and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and cake. We invite you also to browse the Paluma website – paluma.org – where you will find many interesting things to see and do around Paluma. Come and enjoy a day on the mountain……..Colwyn Campbell

At the time of submitting our Club’s article for the Rolly Rag; our President, Dowie is away as a member of the International Exchange Student Committee at Camp Kanga, our District Camp facility at Lake Proserpine.
