From the Director Major projects in our city’s system continue with updates of several of our parks. Green Acres Park, located on Green Acres Drive off Hwy 72, has seen several changes and will get more. In May, we dedicated the new playground and a new park stone sign with the help of the Rolla Chamber Ambassadors, members of the Rolla Parks and Recreation staff, city administration, and members of the Rolla Parks Advisory Commission. The stone sign replaces the wooden structures that were deteriorating. The park is also getting a new bathroom, with preliminary work already underway. That addition is tentatively expected sometime in late August. Both of those projects were made possible through the support of Rolla voters in the form of the passage of Prop P, a dedicated sales tax for needed improvements in the parks system. In July, city Parks staff installed the net and posts and painted the lines for a pickle ball court on the former tennis courts at the park. Pickle ball is a paddle sport (similar to a racquet sport) that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a Whiffle Ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, with several modifications. Played by most all ages, it has particularly caught on as a way to stay active for older adults and offers social aspects as well. Green Acres Park also offers a pavilion, a basketball court and an athletic field and is also part of the Acorn Trail system. Ballfield season is in full swing, with tournaments just about every weekend. Rolla is the site of a number of state and national level events, bringing in hundreds of teams and their fans, and adding to the tourism impact on lodging, restaurants and retail. Several of our improvements have also come at the Ber Juan sports complex. There is a new outfield fence at Kimmel Field, replacing the fencing that had been up since 1982. That area of the fence had been suffering from the elements and had been repaired multiple times over the years, suffering from rust and wind. Also new at the complex are LED scoreboards at Kimmel and Morgan fields, replacing the out-of-date originals from 1993. Also underway is an outfield lighting replacement project, which should be complete in the coming months, as well as a redo of the complex parking lot, with the help of city and county road crews. Parks crews also added another soccer goal at the fields just below the Presbyterian Church, which will provide more practice options for Rolla teams. At the Centre, we’ve had visits from 394 different zip codes between Jan. 2017 and Jan. 2018, including 191 from Missouri, and patrons from 38 states and Washington, D.C., as well as five European countries. Our annual Daddy Daughter Dance had our largest attendance ever at 396 participants and our free to the public Breakfast with the Bunny and egg hunt in the pool drew 500 visitors. Our Fit Girls program, begun as a collaboration with the Rolla MultiSport Club, was free to the participants this year due to the support of the Rolla community – Your Community Health Center, the Rotary Breakfast Club, the Optimists, Rolla Books and Toys, and Key Sport. That program for junior high girls combines running, education, reading and positive role models. It began April 4 and wrapped up May 14 with a 5K for participants. Featured speakers this year include Olympian Chantae McMillan, Judge Mary Sheffield, Centre trainer Jamie Pfiester, Centre Fitness Manager Meleena Littlejohn, and Rolla Police Officer Leann Robertson. If you’re interesting taking part in the next program, contact Marie Crowley at 573-426-6919. We hosted our annual Firecracker 5K, making it a color run this year. Each summer we are one of the host sites for the Licking Shootout Weekends. This brings in hundreds of volleyball and basketball teams and up to 14,000 visitors to Rolla each summer. The Centre hosted the annual free National Senior Health & Wellness Day. Those attending were able to meet with 19 different agencies spanning all areas of interest for older adults, watch a demo of the Centre’s senior-themed classes Forever Young and Forever Flexible, and learn about the Centre and PCRMC’s Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. Splash Zone and the Kiwanis Natatorium are sharing the new Glide Fit program, which features inflatable, anchored surf boards that allow participants to focus on strength, stability and balance exercises. For information on classes, contact the Centre at 341-2386 or visit our Facebook page. And also at the Centre, we’ve added some new strength benches, new powerlifting bars, and a Glute Ham Developer, designed to target these large muscle groups. Thank you to the citizens for your continued support of our parks and recreation system. As always, feel free to contact us at 341-2386.
