pet-human connection Where did it all begin? The dog-human bond can be traced back to around 30 000 years ago when dog remains were found buried with two humans. Historically dogs and wolves share 99.9% of the same DNA, except for Chromosone 6 where three genes that code for hyper-sociability are found. Our ancestors noticed that amongst the wolf scavengers, some had a loving neediness which was hard to resist, so they welcomed
those few in from the cold and called them dogs. The others were called wolves and made their way back to the wild. Our folk stories include dogs: the Africans spoke of Rukuba - the dog who brought us fire; the Welsh told the tale of the faithful hound Gelert, who saved a prince’s baby from a wolf. Aristocrats started including dogs in family portraits and wealthy eccentrics included dogs in their wills.

Their capacity to express affection unconditionally makes a dog a valued family member. According to a dog-human relation study in England from an evolutionary perspective, about 40% of pet parents identify their dog as a family member. Dogs are astute readers of human body language and can predict what their owners will do or need. Their capacity to express affection unconditionally makes a dog a valued family member. An Australian Professor believes our success as a species is partly due to help from dogs. Dogs acted as human alarms, trackers, hot water bottles and children’s guardians and playmates while humans provide them with food and security. Canine’s social impact on humans is especially significant for those who tend to be more isolated such as children with no siblings or elderly persons. Dogs are an important determinant for psychological wellbeing. Companionship often gives people a sense of purpose by causing them to develop a daily routine and giving them something to look forward to each day. Today in populated areas, dogs are the planet’s most abundant terrestrial carnivore, around 900 million worldwide.

Our cat-human connection goes back to ancient times too! By analyzing the ancient DNA of cat remains found in port cities, scientists concluded that cats were brought along on ships most likely to help protect food storages on board by killing rodents allowing cats to spread across the world. Domesticated cats all come from wildcats called Felis silvertris lybica that originated in the Fertile Crescent in the Near East Neolithic period and in ancient Egypt in the Classical Period. One of nearly 40
wild cat species existing at that time had a generic variance that allowed it to get along with people. Cats domesticated themselves with farmers originally and today’s urban cat has developed a “cat language”. A cat’s meow isn’t just for display - it’s your cat’s way of having a conversation with you, telling you about their day, asking you what’s for dinner, when the next cuddle is. Stroking a cat’s velvety fur helps you relax and unwind as you devote at least partial attention to this calming activity, and the “love hormone”
oxytocin is released. Although they don’t wag their tails or jump on their owners like dogs do, cats cuddle on laps, rub their heads on those they love and vocalise their affection by purring. Today the cat population is around 500 million. Modern life is industrialized but the animals we live with continue to carry great social and symbolic weight. The pet-human connection is strong and as science investigates further, very beneficial to both parties. Pets are part of our family. Rogz wholeheartedly agrees!

Local production is booming at Rogz World Headquarters. We have been designing and producing most of our products at Rogz World Headquarters in Cape Town since 1995 and now we are ramping up our Beltz manufacturing capabilities to produce all the new products inhouse which we are launching this year.
And not only have we envigorated the Engine Room for our Beltz production, we have set up an incredible bed production facility for the first time locally. We are now designing and manufacturing Moon Podz, Cosy Podz and Lekka Podz.

The heart of our business is our people and pets and we support the local community in influencing the lives of our children in a positive way. Many Roggers live in the nearby community of Du Noon and their children go to Sophakama Primary which is supported by our Rogz Academy. Little Lambs is an NGO in the area, committed to reducing child poverty, chronic hunger and developing hope in the hearts of their children. Rogz commissioned their Beads Project led by Ma Betty to custom-make blue beaded Africa keyrings which we give to you from Africa with Love. The love in the heart of your keyring is for the children of Du Noon.

In memory of Sally
For the love of photography, pets and people. Sally Mellish Lippstreu, our original Rogz Photographer, sadly passed away in June this year. We pay tribute to this remarkable woman, a dear friend and part of our Rogz family. A vibrant and passionate woman, Sally’s love for photography, pets and people radiated in her smile. Never a dull moment with her, every Rogz photography shoot was an experience. Her favourite sayings “Follow the courage of your conviction” and “Life is Beautiful” was symbolic, for even through her low times, Sally’s positive approach to Life was exceptional. She will always live on in her beautiful photography. Her son Johno Mellish is also a photographer and has taken over Sally’s studio and he remains a part of our Rogz family.
