•I am a playground player. It is my identity. My thoughts, feelings and actions reflect that ideal. The title of my first essay became the title of my book. •My grade school playground interactions became a stored influential /ambient/ memory unit. •Playground play is the quintessential autotelic experience.

Playground Player My neighborhood elementary schoolyard surveyed a two-story brick school building surrounded by a large playground generously equipped with swing sets, monkey bars, softball fields, and a paved basketball court. On arrival, the neighborhood children transformed themselves into playground players temporally interlocked in playground play. The playground sported a school staff constructed softball field complete with backstop and dirt infield. Plus, five kid-made field-work softball fields of various dimensions scattered around the perimeter of the playground bounded by two back streets, one north and one west, and a south fence. Concurrently, a large unmarked timeworn plot nestled between the playground equipment, the paved basketball court, and the softball fields offered a versatile domain for the playground kids. Winter sliding ice games, marble spring games, and the running game, pompom-pullaway, “come away, or I’ll pull you away.� During the noon hour recess, the teachers permitted the playground children to walk across the main road, east of the elementary school, accessing a vast tract of land known as the school hills. The topography and cold winter snow ensured smooth sliding on strips of cardboard: Packing the snow to an icy glaze. It felt daring to slide down an ice-covered hillside on one's feet. Many a time, the older boys would challenge the younger boys to prove their courage. The ultimate thrill had to be sliding on a large, not-allowed, piece of plywood plunging with speed, spinning to the bottom of a packed-down snow-covered hill. Although suitably signed to walk home during the noon hour, I preferred to eat my box lunch inside the school building, therefore, extending my playtime on the playground. An altruistic proprietor of a private residence located near the school grounds entertained the school children with games and refreshments during the noon hour recess. I found this site to be fun and cheerful: Nevertheless, I remember visiting only twice, preferring the amenities of playground play.

Indeed, my grade school softball games displayed neither the fanfare nor fame of the nearby, major city, professional baseball team. However, my games did spiritually embody (1) the joy of the moment, (2) a sense of fulfillment, and (3) standards of excellence: measured and judged by all in attendance in both time and place. In retrospect, a spring day softball game played on the kid-made field located at the southeast corner of the playground presented a set of rules and procedures for the playground players to follow. A popular vote selected the captains. Placing a hand over fist on a bat awarded a first or second choice of players. Each team featured ten position players: The captains managed the batting order and defensive placement. Extra players roamed at will in the outfield.

The game progressed in an orderly manner as I waited within the self-enforced boundary limits of the on-deck circle: engaging in preliminary actions. Deftly, I stepped into the unmarked left-handed batter’s box next to the drawn-in-the-dirt home plate. I faced the pitcher with my wood bat waving back and forth absorbed in spatial thought isolated from extraneous diversions such as catcher conversations, crowd chatter, and the ramblings of the opposing team. The first pitch fell short of home plate: At that moment in time, I scanned the outfield for defensive alignment noting, one player in left, one player in center, and three in the right-field area. The next pitch angled far outside. I scanned the outfield again. The number of players in the right-field area had swelled considerably, collectively waving their arms, calling for me to hit the ball to them. The next pitch seemed about right: ignoring the masses that populated right-field, I prepared myself to hit the ball to left-center-field. I stepped back with my left foot, synchronously, rotating the head of the bat low around my body. Presently, I stepped forward with my right foot delivering an uppercut swing that powered the softball in the direction of the left-center-field gap. I ran to first base visually aware of the ball bouncing in the distance chased by the playground players. Pleased and delighted, I became immersed in navigating within the framework of the game.

As a childhood playground player, I improvised methods to manipulate the tools of the game to boost athletic abilities on the field of play. Indeed, the well-ordered softball field parameters instilled in me an in-control perspective.

Solitary Play (1) My local backyard boundary measured one full acre. The well-manicured level lawn provided an excellent play area. No fence needed. Hours and hours throughout the summer, I played solitary backyard baseball. My imagination provided the means to play made-up ball games on a made-up ball field. I adapted rules for solitary play. A fly ball caught in the air or on the first bounce was an out. A wooden bat and a rubber ball were standard equipment. Pieces of wood or rocks marked home plate and the bases. An unmarked batter’s box served its function well. I displayed a natural disciplined intensity hitting self-tossed fly balls into the outfield, fielding on the run, and throwing the ball to the appropriate base. Indeed, I was my /own/ batter, my /own/ fielder, and my /own/scorekeeper. Only later did I understand the significance of solitary play.

(2) My childhood geographical locale provided backyard seasonal game variation. Winter supplied snow and ice that covered the ground for months. Summer delivered a multitude of bright blue sky days and white cloud puffs that dotted the afternoon sky swelling into high pile thunderheads by evening. The distinct weather season cycles stimulated various interplay adaptations, imagination, and resourcefulness. I engaged many a summer day immersed in a brick wall, solitary, rubber ball game. The glass block window inserted into the brick wall furnished a smooth target providing a predictable ball flight pattern. I skillfully employed various throwing angles to produce fly balls, ground balls, and line drives. Only later did I understand the significance of solitary play. Solitary play-action fine-tuned decision-making abilities, independent problem-solving skills, and deep focus technique.

Solitary Play: Engaging one’s imagination to express and embrace one’s individuality. Simplicity!

Parallel Pathways

The main road traveled on top of a hill above the right-field fence offers a picturesque view of the bowl-shaped softball ball field below. Several stores, office buildings, and a railway station occupied the hilly terrain to the north of the first base foul line. The railroad tracks cut into a steep embankment traveling north-south parallel and east to the third-baseline. To the south, a vast lumber mill extended well beyond the left-field fence punctuated by a massive smokestack. Softball games attracted an enthusiastic walk-in crowd from the surrounding town. The locals, seeking an upper-deck view, parked their vehicles alongside the road above the right-field fence, watching the games from inside their cars as others sat in chairs on the road’s shoulder. Many a night, a dynamic group of steadfast men on the road bank whittled throughout the evening until sundown. All at once, at the appointed time, the freshly carved shavings were torched, signaling the anticipated end to the proceedings. My softball game plan, forged from numerous self-imposed lessons, mandated hitting safely past infielders and away from outfielders. Not an elite athlete by any means, I did have a natural flair for generating base hits by manipulating my wrists imparting spin to the softball with day-to-day placement precision. On a Sunday afternoon, I remember in detail a defensive play during a local softball tournament that was rapidly coming to an end. Setting the stage, it was the bottom of the seventh inning, one out, runners on first and second base with the local team leading by three runs. From my third-base position, I scanned the field, extracted, and assimilated the information anticipating the next series of moves. Once the pitcher released the ball, I played by feel awareness alone, machine-like, but flexible within the framework of the unfolding play. The hitter centered the bat on the pitched ball sending a line drive deep to left-center-field that landed safely bounding towards the left-field fence. Concurrently, the trained and experienced defensive playmakers responded efficiently to the developing action dictated by the ball flight pattern, the speeding runners, and the overall dynamics of the game. I moved up the third-base line toward home-plate a few feet, then, I stepped inside the foul line as the runner from second-base rounded the third-base bag to score. The runner from first-base was now rounding third. From my position inside the foul line, I witnessed the runner speeding past me towards home as the shortstop unleashed straight-line throw to home. The runner's speed, the velocity, and the direction of the thrown ball prompted my position on the field to change closer to home plate outside the foul line.

The relay arrived well ahead of the runner to the catcher waiting at home-plate. Aware that he would be out at home, the runner slid to a stop, turned, ran straight back up the line to third-base. I was in the right spot. I shouted, “throw the ball’’, and that he did: a perfect throw directed to the middle of the runner’s back. As the ball nestled into my glove, my peripheral vision spotted the hitter steamrolling around second-base. Presently, being perceptually aware the runner shielded the third-base umpire from view, I slipped the ball out of my glove before applying the phantom tag to the runner’s back. As the base umpire signaled out, I routed the ball to second base with a quick-release forearm-wrist throw. The alert second baseman tagged the shocked runner: double play/end of the inning/end of the game/end of the tournament. The members of my team came storming off the field in celebration. The opposing team roared at the umpire that I did not tag the runner. Fortunately, the base umpire, a man of integrity, did not call what he did not see.

I was a bit stunned. I was seeking an explanation to a rapid-fire series of athletic game interactions that allowed me to orchestrate the game’s final act. Since there was no instant replay, no do-over, or re-enactment to guide me, only later, I detailed the action gameplay dynamics displayed on that long-ago summer day. My summer league games were a competitive timeline fit. League games actuated competitive mindset adaptions. Schedules were posted, scores were recorded, and trophies were awarded. Q: Do I play to win the game or do I play to win the play within the game? A: I trust that one facilitates the other. Anyway, someone will keep score. Q: Do I like team play or do I like individual play? A: A combination of both, that is, individual play within a team concept. Q: Do I respond to individual competitors or do I respond to the game itself? A: It does not matter: The boiler inside me heats up once I step on the field of play.

Parallel processing is the ability of athletic intelligence to (1) individually and collectively analyze visual color, motion, shape, and depth (2) compare this information with information sorted, cataloged, and stored to make decisions that are exceedingly quick, continuously updated, and virtually seamless.

Geometric theorem composition provides a model to emulate. •My writing style is compressed/concise/compact. It is built-in. It is the way I write.

Sun Shadow

I had an idea. My self-activated sun shadow presented a visual guide to the development of a balanced golf swing. I liked the idea, but the idea was flawed. The shadow of the sun became a sensory visual dilemma that persists to this day. In the backyard, I addressed the practice ball in a position that extended the sun down the target line to provide a visual barrier that promoted a firm left side through impact. Contemporaneously, I practiced addressing the ball with my shadow directly in front of me. The location of the sun shadow provided a visual guide to help train a non-swaying balanced swing. The flaw is inescapable. The sun shadow falls in various positions during play that caused perception irregularities impairing swing plane execution. It is a sensory visual dilemma. To this day, I prefer to play on cloudy days. Seeking a remedy, I framed the navigational map of the target line. Distant objects like a tree, rock, or a building served as visual cues aligned 90 degrees to the target line. Guideline: (1) First, I observe an object in the distance that aligns 90 degrees to the target line. (2) Then, I extend the clubhead to the distant object. (3) Next, I set my feet accordingly. (4) Last, I maintain a 90-degree alignment image throughout the swing process from the address position to the top of the backswing to the downswing release through impact. My alignment 90-degree rule helped the sun shadow problem and proved a useful remedial tool to countermeasure random disorienting sightlines that I encountered on the golf course.

Sight Lines A brick wall was the domain of various made-up rubber ball games. One day I utilized the brick wall as a training aid. The sight line wall reinforced the alignment set-up and swing plane. I liked the idea but the idea was ill-considered. The wall had created a false orientation perception compared to reality. A suitably shaped golf course presents many random disorienting sight lines. Mowing lines, divots, fairway-rough lines, and tee box marker placements present sight lines that disrupt the spatial perception of the golf shot at hand. The response is a double-crossed oriented swing plane that attempts to compensate for the disparity between perception and reality. In essence, peripheral vision had created false orientation dual target directionality. Mind-body reaction to the disparity between perception and reality is alarming. Subconscious computational dynamics are suppressed below critical levels in real-time performance. It is a dilemma. To add to my dilemma, once in the address position looking at the target accentuated intrinsic positional sight line visual distortion. Guideline: I have constructed an internal visual, motor imagery system to shield myself from external disturbances. In time, I developed an inner sense of feel awareness direction that serves as a firewall to neutralize interfering visual disturbances, target directionality, and false orientation perceptions. Perception must match reality. Today, once set, (1) alignment procedure completed (2) internal, visual motor shield switched on (3) target sight line framed fixed (4) target distance internally processed: I stop looking at the target.

In addition to intrinsic positional sight line distortion, I possess a natural spatial awareness distortion that produces a ball flight pattern 20 degrees to the right of the target regardless of address position. To counteract a ball flight pattern that is 20° degrees right of the target line, I needed to re-calibrate my body positioning to correspond to the correct alignment. Perception must match reality. I needed a subconscious effort as well as a conscious effort to succeed. One day an idea manifested itself in the form of right-hand rotation. Guideline: The space between my index finger and my little finger will measure my spatial distortion dilemma. I rotate my hand counterclockwise until the little finger points down the shaft. My perception is a rotation slightly to the left.

Paroxysm I was shocked. An alarming hand paroxysm had appeared unexpectedly. Simultaneous in motion, I endured a left hand clockwise rotation and a right hand counterclockwise rotation the instant before impact that kindled a fast freeze, traumatic, tension tight, gridlock. I was in serious trouble.

I needed a remedial action plan: (1) I discarded the interlocking grip. (2) I tried the overlapping grip, the reverse overlapping grip, and the ten-fingered grip. (3) I explored various grip pressure points from the fingers to the palms. (4) I tested separating my hands at different lengths. The ten-fingered, hands-separated, palm grip, worked well. Intermittent double-hand spasms resurfaced but faded in time. Guideline: Sedulously seeking relief, I perceptually suppressed neural memory access to my disruptive spasmodic fingers. Furthermore, I enabled a mental discipline idea to induce the cells in my arms and shoulders to swell. Real or imagined, I proceeded to stimulate fluids inside each cell to flow outward in all directions generating a supple, relaxed feel.

I enabled a mental discipline idea to induce the cells in my arms and shoulders to swell. Real or imagined, I proceeded to stimulate fluids within each cell to flow outward in all directions generating, within me, a supple, relaxed feel.

Motor Memory Long-term motor memory units are difficult to rewrite. Is developing new motor memory units best? Or is a transformation best? Or, is modification best? Or is reduction and replacement best? I have employed all of the above to advantage.

Motor Memory Once I considered that potent motor memory dynamics linked to my past extensive athletic endeavors were (1) mismatched athletically action coordinated and (2) readily activated: I reasoned cause, effect, and remedy. 1) I learned to suppress my strong motor memory tendency to cock my right wrist. The cocked right wrist was, in part, responsible for a divergent swing path through impact. 2) My hat bill measures my strong motor memory tendency to lift my head vertically during the backswing. The slightest vertical lift during the backswing sets in motion a divergent swing path. My hat bill provides a method to monitor any lift of my head. 3) I was perplexed and annoyed observing divots that slanted decidedly left of the target line. The release of the cocked right wrist was, in part, to blame but, a stored strong motor memory tendency to open my shoulders to the target at impact was, also, responsible. My hat bill centers my shoulders to the target line. Suitably shaped, my backyard practice golf swing through thick blade grass provides a means to monitor any residual discordant motor memory evidenced by impact torque accelerated sound, ball strike release visualization, and target sight line perception.

Tetrahedron

Time and time again, I have experienced a feel sensation communication process in action. During the time I was contemplating a feeling of success relating to pre-swing form, a feel sensation information bundle surged into conscious awareness. In a flash, the information bundle is transcribed /triangle/. The triangle, in time, evolved into a tetrahedron that enveloped the pre-swing stance. The four vertices are in place at the address position: (1) One vertex on the ground anchored the clubhead at address. (2) One vertex anchored the projected rotational swing arc at the top of the backswing. (3) The two vertices on the ground, behind me, anchored the target line. The line from the clubhead vertex to the top tetrahedron vertex above and behind my head served to shape a proficient body rotation. The tetrahedron side faces promoted a feeling of balance while the triangular back face stabilized my back. The bottom triangular face indicated a 90-degree alignment to the target line. Pleased and delighted I became immersed in the process of constructing the tetrahedron from the original triangle. However, now, the tetrahedron resides deep within the confines of my subconscious mind only to be resurrected by feel awareness alone.

Streaming Subconscious Information Flow

Often, a sudden flash of insight emerges in word form, a product of parallel processing, no doubt. Time and time again, I have experienced a feel sensation communication process in action.

Pendulum Time and time again, I have experienced a feel sensation communication comparable to a film coming to life as it develops in a chemical tray of developing fluid. One day, as I addressed the ball, a subconscious superimposed feel awareness image of a free-swinging weighted steel pendulum bubbled up into my word descriptive conscious mind /pendulum/. A swinging pendulum exhibits a measure of tempo, rhythm, and timing that is precise and free-flowing. I visualized and applied the movement characteristics of the weighted pendulum to the anticipated swing of the golf club. I became immersed in the process of constructing the pendulum rationale. Now, the pendulum rationale resides deep within the confines of my subconscious mind only to be resurrected by feel awareness alone.

Streaming Subconscious Flow: I have experienced a sudden flash of insight into complex athletic interactions many times. Interesting, isn’t it?

Swing Mechanics The laboriously detailed process learning golf game fundamentals triggered a plethora of swing correction thoughts. Touring the golf course, I was checking down an ever-expanding list of well-known swing corrections endeavoring to improve my game. In essence, I was fixing-on-the-run. Indeed, I learned one swing component at a time. Guideline: In sequential order, (1) the first step involved the mechanics of the swing component assimilated into the swing package. (2) The second step monitored the physical aspects of the swing component: activated muscles, tendons, and ligaments stretched. However, that stretched feeling quickly faded, extending to retain that stretched feel proved to be a recurring problem, consequently, steps three and four. (3) The third step involved replacing the stretched feel with an awareness motor feel that accompanied the performance of the swing component. (4) The fourth step necessitated executing the swing element by feel awareness alone. Learning a swing component seemed paramount at the time but, down the line, the swing component slipped into the background, therefore, displaying its value as a small part of the whole.

The “Flying” Elbow On a warm summer day, I arrived on the first tee. An experienced teacher supervised a lesson. I was fourteen. In short order, I placed a handkerchief between my right bicep and side as an instructional correction aid. In silence, the lesson progressed onward. At the par-three eighth, on impulse, I quietly decided to extend my right elbow. My teacher immediately admonished my efforts. I have executed the right elbow correction lesson until now. (1) I am standing more upright at the address position. (2) I am standing square to the target line. (3) I am pressing my left bicep to my chest. (4) I am extending my lumbar spine forward to

activate a neural proprioception swing speed center. (5) I am bending my wrists and hands down at address as the wrist muscles elongate down. (6) I am positioning the golf shaft perpendicular to the target at address. (7) I am engaging an up and out lift to the clubhead. (8) I am reducing my hip rotation on the backswing. (9) I am extending my right elbow away from my body on the backswing while stretching upward with my left arm. (10) I am maintaining a firm left wrist throughout the length of the backswing. Guideline: I engage a slight timing pause at the top of the upright backswing. The right elbow transitions straight down to my right side as the left wrist rotates passively clockwise. The "laid-off” golf shaft creates an inside the target line downswing release to impact. Guideline: The elongated down hands and wrists at address respond with a free and fluid motion from the address /set/ throughout the re-entry /set/ that positions the hands and wrists for the optimum re-route /release/ through the impact area down the target line. Guideline: The perpendicular shaft at address allows the hands to rotate forward following forward press ignition. Guideline: Advantageous right leg load and release positioning provide needed structure, balance, and stability. Guideline: I observe a pre-swing counterclockwise rotation: (1) left palm square to target (2) left thumb pointing down (3) hollow of the elbow over and up. I am pre-swing ignition ready.

I developed a unique move that fills a final role before swing ignition that provides advantageous body positioning, relaxed feel, and enhanced ball strike release. Guideline: Before swing ignition, I engage an upward body (1) shoulders up (2) small of back bowed-in and (3) legs down. Consequently, the clubhead lifts up and out. The weight of the club elongates my arms and wrists downward into an ideal pre-swing position that facilitates a downswing re-focus impact zone eye sweep. I affirm. A straight /long drive/ down the fairway or a target line controlled flight pattern to the pin is a problem. The problem is one of perspective, impression, and interpretation. It is a mindset issue. Guideline: I have adopted a drive control discipline that affirms ball flight pattern limitations. Guideline: I have locked into a drive distance discipline that affirms ball flight distance limitations. Guideline: I have embraced a distance loss discipline that affirms distance loss limitations. Keywords trigger memory retrieval as does sound and image. Mindset Indeed, my self-imposed long-running golf developmental process produced a complete golf swing unit. That was step one, now step two: to transition from an analytical mindset to a spatial awareness mindset. I performed countless self-tossed practice sessions displaying progressive spatial awareness swing approximations that efficiently produced consistent center hit softballs or baseballs blissfully devoid of cognitive manipulation. Consequently, the blueprint mental discipline that I seek exists within me. Implementing a feel awareness mindset blueprint was the second step, now, the third step: to sustain a mindset awareness shot after shot.

I learned to pitch a ball flight pattern that arched high with a right to left curve: a suburb blend of ball flight control and distance for strikes. One day the umpire marked the batter’s boxes with chalk while I was waiting to pitch. This pre-game bit of activity outlined the parameters that targeted a strike behind the plate. I promptly walked the first two batters. That day and that day forward, the ball flight pattern became my point of focus rather than the small target behind the plate. From my position as a pitcher, I fielded a slow roller between home plate and first base. The runner was speeding up the line. I was shocked. My right hand locked into a fast freeze-grip: I released a weak lob to the first baseman. I was in trouble. Both alarmed and exasperated, I engaged cause, effect, and remedy. I did not consider deep subconscious performance trauma or performance repetitive movement breakdown as cause and effect. Did I bypass existing mental blocks that remain in my subconscious, or did I eliminate motor memory mental blocks from my subconscious mind? I do not know. However, I do know that athletic mental blueprint disciplines exist within me. I have the tools to succeed. The struggle to succeed encountered in human athletic endeavors elicits thought processes embracing performance creating ways to excel competing with artistry and intellect crystallizing into a feeling of well-being and fulfillment.

Spin Wheel Spin Hand spinning a bicycle tire captivates the imagination. Rotary metal hub focus, rotating spokes depth perception, and accelerating tire peripheral vision is a spatial fascination. The visual display is charismatic. The bicycle tire observation intuitively connected a spinning bicycle tire and a rotary athletic movement. Intrinsic Visual Distortion Wow! One day I experienced an intense vertigo episode. Day and night vertigo episodes continued for the next three weeks. I was fortunate that vertigo during daytime activities diminished in time. However, in bed, I continued to experience episodic vertigo for months. I needed a miracle. The miracle presented itself in the form of a physical therapy referral. It was a revelation. Physical therapy eye exercises expeditiously stopped episodic vertigo manifestations in bed. I was surprised. A simple but effective eye movement exercise had saved the day. Amazing! I have experienced inner ear positional vertigo, migraine-associated vertigo, motion sickness, double vision, imbalanced motor movement, and disorientated feelings in the last 30 years. Is there a correlation between visual and spatial alignment orientation? And will vertigo treatment exercises alleviate spatial-visual alignment orientation problems? Binocular vision dysfunction is an orbital convergence insufficiency that expedites alignment, balance, and coordination difficulties. Double vision is an extreme episodic manifestation. Orbital misalignment is vertical or horizontal, or both as the sight-line of one eye and the sight-line of the other eye do not converge. Divergent slight lines make it difficult for the eyes to work together. Eye movement and eye relaxation exercises are useful treatment tools to remediate binocular convergence insufficiency. Swing Drill Practice (1) Age-related play limitations diminished my opportunities to generate deep breathing. I needed to activate a deep breathing routine. Today, I am the pilot of a well-developed, tension dampening, deep breathing routine that I refresh throughout the day. (2) I follow a set routine on a lush practice green located next to the tenth hole on the back nine. I start putting a few balls at various distances concentrating on feedback feel. Yes, I do aim. (3) Next, I have three different chipping techniques I practice. Again it is the feel of the ball on the clubface that is important. Yes, I dial-in distance. (4) Next, I half-swing, then, full-swing through dense grass. One or two practice swings suffice. My focus is the feel of the swing. The thick blade grass provides a means to monitor impact torque acceleration sound, ball strike release visualization, and target sightline perception. Upon arrival at the first tee, l stand ready, waiting for that sudden expeditiously direct flow of anticipated impact that sends a golf ball to its destination. Guideline: My athletic intelligence employs a wide-angle sweeping visual scan, anticipating movements, triggered or spontaneous, before or during, creating a feel anticipation snapshot: the key to everything athletic. A motion or the anticipation of movement is the key to feeling the body athletic. Consequently: I stay in motion, first, swinging the club back and forth with an oily wrist action motion, then, second, performing a half-swing or two through dense grass noting sound and feel. The drop step is a variation of the square stance depending on the level of a lie, ball location, and comfort. The drop step positioning compensates left knee and lower back issues. Swing Path Swing path execution takes a bit of work and. There is much to be done before swing ignition. Inside the “on-deck circle�: I practice a half-swing that sweeps through the sod. I observe the accelerated swing path throughout the impact area. Simultaneously, I hear the brushing of the grass that produces the sound of the accelerated swing path through the impact area. Sight and sound visualization aids facilitate impact zone anticipation dynamics.

My “on-deck circle” practice is complete. Next, I approach the ball. (1) I view the target from a position behind the ball. I visualize the sightline. As I walk to the address area, I finger-draw the sightline noting a distinguishing spot 1 to 3 inches distance in front of the ball. (2) I bend forward: breathing deep, then, exhale. The difference is dramatic. Deep breathing dampens inner core tension that slows downswing release. (3) Next, I sight an object 90° to the target line. I set my feet accordingly. (4) I execute my 20° alignment procedure: I rotate my hand counterclockwise until the little finger points down the shaft. My perception is a rotation slightly to the left. (5) Next, I lift my body upward. Concurrently, shoulders rise, lower back arches inward, clubhead rises, and wrists elongate down. It seems a bit complicated in written form, but practice makes it routine.

My recently constructed pre-shot routine component, body lift, creates a pre-set kinesthesis foundation that supports a free-flowing swing release performance. The lifting of my shoulders sets in motion a corresponding lift of the grounded clubhead. The driver lifts 4 inches and 3 inches out. The lift measurements are progressively less throughout the club set. My eyes refocus onto the lifted clubface above the ground. I feel the weight of the clubhead as my wrists and forearms slightly elongate down. A rotational forward press ignites swing ignition. Backswing to downswing transition enables my hands and wrists to rotate clockwise, re-routing the swing path. I have refocused my eyes onto the ball position on the ground. Yes, the operative word is natural. The body lift is a feel natural technique. The re-routed swing path and the refocused impact zone eye sweep is a revelation.

Could a re-routed swing path and a refocused eye sweep be a motor memory key to swing speed max? Indeed, it could. The body-lift pre-shot component provides advantageous body positioning, relaxed feel, and enhanced ball strike release.

The harmful effects of superfluous wrist manipulation, excessive backswing extension, and swing speed intensification have diminished. I am delighted. [20°OFFSET] Guideline: The space between my index finger and my little finger will measure my spatial distortion dilemma. I rotate my hand counterclockwise until the little finger points down the shaft. My perception is a rotation slightly to the left. The offset alignment procedure remediates the pin placement on the green side left that disrupts the fairway flow target line to the right side of the green. It is a unique remedial tool. It works for me.

[SET-SET-RELEASE] Guideline: I engage a slight timing pause at the top of the upright backswing. The right elbow transitions straight down to my right side as the left wrist rotates passively clockwise. The "laid-off” golf shaft creates an inside the target line downswing release to impact. The top of my backswing features the right elbow position up and out. The right elbow quickly transitions to my right side at the beginning of the downswing directing a “laid-off” shaft slot for re-entry into the impact zone. Timing is critical.

[DRIVE DISTANT DRIVE] Guideline: I have locked into a drive distance discipline that ball flight distance limitations. My membership golf course provides a memory record of my tee shot straight long drives. I observe from the tee box visual spots on the fairway that locate my best straight or nearly straight tee shots. It is detrimental to my swing tempo timing and rhythm to attempt to hit the ball a straight distance length to match my best past efforts. I recognize the limits of my ability to hit the ball a straight length max. A skilled driver shot from the tee box that travels so far and no farther, I accept.

[DRIVE DISTANT CONTROL] Guideline: I have adopted a drive control discipline that affirms ball flight pattern limitations. Membership par-3-pin placements provide a memory record of my scattered shot dispersal pattern. IN THE ZONE A spontaneous in-the-zone transition event is a perplexing but pleasing experience. Conscious control interference and inner core tension became a cause and effect problem before the number six-hole. A mindset change occurred as I approached the number six tee box. Inside the number six tee box, I completed my set-up routine free from conscious control interference and inner core tension. My long drive landed on the left side of the fairway. I launched a wood number 3 close to the green. On the number seven-hole, I stroked an excellent driver shot. I hit a 9-iron close to the pin. Rationale: At that moment on the five par number six hole tee (1) transitioned a high tension state into a low tension state, (2) engaged an efficient subconscious kinetic energy flow, and (3) mobilized a high-level performance skill-set. Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable.

In time I became disappointed and disheartened. Not an elite athlete, I did possess athletic intelligence and intinsic motivation. In time, I learned that self-determination through self-imposed innovative lessons produced the feeling of well-being and fulfillment that I seek. (2) My hands and wrists throughout swing action communicate information that is readily activated. Guideline: The elongated down hands and wrists at address respond with a free and fluid motion from the address /set/ throughout the re-entry /set/ that positions the hands and wrists for the optimum re-route /release/ through the impact area down the target line. At times, I visually monitor the movement of the shaft forward. (3) A local-well known par-three golf course resides on a former long-standing school site that features a historically preserved red 2-story brick building and a white classroom brick building that is now the clubhouse. I worked as a programmer in the final days of the school’s educational history. (4) On the number 11 hole, I joined a single player. I noticed the logo on his golf bag. “Are you a college player?” I asked. “Yes, sir,” He said. I observed the power, full-extension, and smooth rhythm of an elite player. Unaffected, I proceeded to engage my self-determined swing efforts with confidence and harmony. (5) On the 17th hole, I faced a problematic pitch several yards off the elevated green in spongy rough that can snag an iron. I played a runner with my 7-wood out of the rough, up the slope, rolling to within 4 feet of the hole. I holed the putt for a 3. “Nice up and down,” he said, “thank you,” I said.

Homeslice Immersed in homeslice competition: I proposed a best-ball solution. The best ball position is the ball in play. One of the playing partners places his ball alongside the best ball position: no nearer the hole. The proposal was accepted. We work together as a team to score against par. I like it. Guideline: I trust the stimulus of competition delivers a rush of sustained adrenaline, intense focus, and heightened agile awareness that supports intrinsic competitive vitality and composure. Rolling fairways are nestled within dense towering hardwoods spawning a feeling of privacy. A winding river adjoins the long five par two-hole. Ponds, marshes, and creeks engender a tranquil outing in nature. My self-imposed long-running golf developmental process produced a complete golf swing unit. Step two: I transitioned from a conscious mindset to a subconscious mindset. Implementing a feel awareness mindset blueprint was the second step, now, the third step: to sustain a spatial awareness mindset shot after shot. Swing preservation or swing integrity is a fundamental tool. Guideline: Crisscrossing information from the conscious level and the subconscious level in the interface is in a disciplined form to avoid confusion, conflict, and ineffectiveness. Accordingly, I devised a grading system that evaluates my ability to sustain an awareness mindset on the golf course. Level B is a good grade. In the main, I fluctuate between a C⁺ and a B⁺. I wanted to continue my round at the next hole. The smiling faces I encountered had other ideas. Immediately, an adrenaline spike increased my grade level from a C⁺ to a B⁺. In response, I drilled a straight drive down the fairway. My B⁺ mindset level continued for the rest of the round. Incident (2) A friendly golf course neighbor engaged me in superfluous conversation as I walked up to the number 14 tee box. My spatial awareness mindset concentration leaped from a C⁺ to a B⁺ in a flash. I maintained a B⁺ mindset for the rest of the round.

Long thick grass provides a useful medium to train swing plane area impact.

I had practiced through thick blade grass before noting impact torque accelerated sound, ball strike release visualization, and target sightline perception. Later I established that wet grass is best. I swing through wet long grass /swoosh/. The sound is similar to the inflected accelerator air pitched sound I create to simulate clubhead acceleration through the impact area. The wet grass/swoosh/sound helps to feel the tempo, timing, and rhythm of the clubhead acceleration through the impact area. Imagination and a natural disciplined intensity form the temperament to engage in solitary backyard play.

Final Fade FLASHBACK “Hey, nice drive,” He said. My superb tee shot drive bounced again and again down the tree line fairway triggering a pleasing retroactive memory response channel-linked to my neighborhood elementary school playground player days. Presently, I stepped forward with my right foot delivering an uppercut swing that powered the softball to the left-center-field area. I ran to first base visually aware of the ball bouncing in the distance chased by the playground players. Pleased and delighted, I became immersed in navigating within the framework of the game. “Thank you,” I said.

I have a sense that experience repeats itself. Time maps embodied and embedded in neural network layers intertwine past present and future. Prior experience imagery recall interconnects awareness anticipation scenarios to shape and re-shape complex athletic movements in real-time performance. FIREWALL ►I am standing on the tee as I view the number 3 hole. The fairway is straight. It does not flow to the green. A straight drive and a straight 5-wood placed the ball in an excellent position for a pitch shot over the creek to the pin. The fairway target is right of the green on my second shot. However, I am aware of the green in peripheral vision. It becomes a second target. The green sighted in my peripheral vision has created a false orientation dual-target sightline. As a consequence: (1) Swing path is off-line. (2) The ball flight pattern is off-line. (3) Swing integrity is impaired. Double cross! ►I am standing over a short putt that breaks from right to left. The hole in peripheral vision becomes a second target. My left-hand rotates counterclockwise, rolling the ball off-line to the second target. The second target has pulled my attention away from the original putt line. Double Cross! I endeavor to block-out the peripheral target. However, a momentary lapse in concentration will send discordant messages spawning dual-target directionality and a false orientation perception. ►I am standing on the fairway of the number 9 hole. The pin is on the left side of the green beyond a deep bunker. I project a 5-wood fairway shot to follow the fairway to the right side of the green. In mid-swing, I re-direct my swing path to target the pin. The shot is a success. It feels natural.

SUMMER SHADE My deep breathing pre-shot routine is, now, set in stone. (1) I hold the length of my club with both hands extending the shaft away from my body. (2) I tense my hands, arms, and shoulders. (3) I bend my upper body forward, simultaneously breathing in until my upper body reaches a parallel position. (4) I forcefully exhale and relax my hands, arms, and shoulders. My deep breathing pre-shot routine is both a sound physical therapy practice to stretch my surgically repaired back and an excellent neurophysiological technique to temper inner core tension. Guideline: Before swing ignition, I engage an upward body lift: (1) shoulders up (2) small of back bowed-in (3) legs down. Consequently, the clubhead lifts up and out. The weight of the club elongates my arms and wrists downward into an ideal pre-swing position that facilitates a downswing re-focus impact zone eye sweep. My re-focused impact zone eye sweep is a significant upgrade. (1) My eyes follow the clubhead as it lifts. (2) My eyes remain focused on the pre-swing clubhead location. (3) I re-focus my eye sweep upon downswing impact area re-entry. The results are amazing. MINDSET I have remediated my sun shadow, sightline, alignment, spasmodic grip, and motor memory glitches. My developmental golf swing is complete. Fixing-on-the-run is a dead issue. Guideline: The idea is that a proper blend of fundamentals, anticipation, and execution produces a precise athletic movement that shapes a corresponding level of confidence and harmony on the playing field.

PARADOX Long-term analytical conscious processing emboldens a self-conscious mindset. What to do? The automatic subconscious system needs to be in control: However, the conscious mind refuses to stand aside. Flow immersion countermeasures are useful tools. Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable. It is a paradox. I divided the process into ten distinct /in the zone/ components. ►Assets: absorption autotelic anticipation focus immersion ►Neutral: time ►Progress: balance control flow tempo I am relaxed and patient. I am attuned to spontaneous subconscious feel awareness images that trigger a sense of empowerment to enable a performance level immersed in balance, control, flow, and tempo. A procedural blend /•knowledge •experience •confidence •harmony/ subconscious memory process achieves a self-regulating turn-key blueprint that monitors and modulates the mind-body continuum. A cursory verification application is all that is needed. I trust the natural process to self-actuate.

FINAL FIT Inner core tension made the shot-making process problematic. Swing fluid rhythm was inconsistent or non-existent. Seeking a solution, I engaged in swing path, swing plane, and pre-shot routine strategies to remediate the inner core tension enigma. The results were encouraging. Physical therapy was the final piece of the puzzle. Physical therapy (1) facilitates movement, (2) relieves pain, (3) increases fluid circulation, (4) relaxes muscles, and (5) improves muscle function. My golf swing improved dramatically following four months of physical therapy mobilization. Inner core tension diminished. My swing is fluid to a consistent level. My life is super senior meritorious. Wonderful!

I affirm. Commonplace levels of personal competitive participation are considered subordinate to the quintessential professional level of operation that is experienced by so few and vicariously viewed by so many. It’s a pity. One’s performance is paramount to one’s well-being. Indeed, one’s mind is an information processing unit that is controlled by a set of physical, social, and cognitive drives that downlinks to an autonomous cognitive deep state neural network system that is empowered to pursue desired outcomes in an open environment.
