Playground Player •I am a playground player. It is my identity. My thoughts, feelings, and actions reflect that ideal. The title of my first essay became the title of my book. •My grade school playground interactions became a stored influential /ambient/ memory unit. •Playground play is the quintessential autotelic experience.

All in Attendance in Both Time and Place Qubit

Playground Player My neighborhood elementary school yard surveyed a two-story brick school building surrounded by a large playground generously equipped with swing sets, monkey bars, softball fields, and a paved basketball court. On arrival, the neighborhood children transformed themselves into playground players temporally interlocked in playground play. In more detail, the playground sported a school staff constructed softball field complete with backstop and dirt infield. Plus, five kid-made field-work softball fields of various dimensions scattered around the perimeter of the playground bounded by two back streets, one north and one west, and a south fence. Concurrently, a large unmarked timeworn plot nestled between the playground equipment, the paved basketball court, and the softball fields offered a versatile domain for winter sliding ice games, marble spring games and the running game, pom-pom-pullaway, “come away, or I’ll pull you away.” During the noon hour recess, the teachers permitted the playground children to walk across the main road east of the elementary school accessing a vast tract of land known as the school hills. The topography and cold winter snow ensured smooth sliding on strips of cardboard packing the snow to an icy glaze. It felt daring to descend a steep ice covered hillside on one’s feet. Many a time the older boys would challenge the younger boys to prove their courage. The ultimate thrill had to be sliding on a large not-allowed piece of plywood plunging with speed, spinning all the way to the bottom of a packed-down snow-covered hill. Although suitably signed to return home during the noon hour, I preferred to eat my box lunch inside the school building to expand my playtime on this wonderful playground. An altruistic proprietor of a private residence located near the school grounds entertained the school children with games and refreshments during the noon hour recess. I found this site to be fun and cheerful; nevertheless, I remember visiting only twice, preferring the amenities of playground play.

Indeed, my grade school softball games displayed neither the fanfare nor fame of the nearby, major city, professional baseball team. However, my games did spiritually embody the joy of the moment, a sense of fulfillment, and standards of excellence measured and judged by all in attendance, in both time and place. In retrospect, a spring day softball game played on the kid-made field located at the southeast corner of the playground presented a set of rules and procedures for the playground players to follow. Popular vote selected the captains. Placing a hand over fist on a bat awarded first or second choice of players. Each team featured ten position players: The captains managed the batting order and defensive placement. Extra players positioned in the outfield roamed at will but spotted themselves in left field for right-handed batters and right field for left-handed batters.

8

The game progressed in an orderly manner as I waited within the self-enforced boundary limits of the on-deck circle engaging in preliminary actions. Deftly, I stepped into the unmarked left-handed batter’s box next to the drawn-in-the-dirt home plate. I faced the pitcher with my wood bat waving back and forth absorbed in spatial thought isolated from extraneous diversions such as catcher conversations, crowd chatter, and the ramblings of the opposing team. As the first pitch fell short of home plate, I scanned the outfield for defensive alignment noting one player in left field, one player in straight away center field and three in right field. As the next pitch angled far outside, I noted the same player in left field, the same player in center field. However, the number of players in right field had swelled considerably collectively waving their arms calling out for me to hit the ball to them. The next pitch seemed about right so ignoring the masses that populated right field I prepared myself to hit the ball to left-center field. I stepped back with my left foot, synchronously, rotating the head of the bat low around my body. Presently, I stepped forward with my right foot delivering an uppercut swing that powered the softball in the direction of the left-center field gap. I ran to first base visually aware of the ball bouncing in the distance chased by the playground players. Pleased and delighted, I became totally immersed navigating within the framework of the game. Simply stated, at an early age, improvising methods to manipulate the tools of the game enhanced my athletic abilities while the well-ordered parameters of the softball field instilled within me an in-control perspective.

Solitary Play BACKYARD PLAY My local backyard boundary measured one full acre. The well-manicured level lawn provided an excellent play area. No fence needed. Hours and hours throughout the summer I played solitary backyard baseball. My imagination provided the means to play made-up ball games on a made-up ball field. I adapted rules for solitary play. A fly ball caught in the air or on the first bounce was an out. A wooden bat and a rubber ball were standard equipment. Pieces of wood or rocks marked home plate and the bases. An unmarked batter’s box served its function well. I displayed a natural disciplined intensity hitting self-tossed fly balls into the outfield, fielding on the run, and throwing the ball to the appropriate base. Indeed, I was my own batter, my own fielder, and my own scorekeeper. Only later did I understand the significance of solitary play. I am my own resource.

10

BRICK WALL GAMES My childhood geographical locale provided backyard seasonal game variation. Winter supplied snow and ice that covered the ground for months. Summer delivered a multitude of bright blue sky days and white cloud puffs that dotted the afternoon sky swelling into high pile thunderheads by evening. The distinct weather season cycles stimulated various interplay adaptations, imagination and resourcefulness. I engaged many a summer day immersed in brick wall, solitary, rubber ball games. The glass block window inserted into the brick wall furnished a smooth target providing a predictable ball flight pattern. I skillfully employed various throwing angles to produce fly balls, ground balls and line drives. Indeed, I was my own batter, my own fielder, and my own scorekeeper. As a lifelong timeline experience I immersed myself in softball field /hitting technique/ drill and golf course /shot making/ practice in solitary bliss. Only later did I understand the significance of solitary play. Solitary play action fine-tuned my decision-making abilities, problem-solving skills and developed a deep focus discipline. I am my own resource.

13

Parallel Pathways The main road traveled on top of a hill above the right-field fence offering a picturesque view of the bowl-shaped ball field below. Several stores, office buildings, and a railway station occupied the hilly terrain to the north of the first base foul line. The railroad tracks cut into a steep embankment traveling north-south parallel and east of the third base foul line. To the south, a vast lumber mill extended well beyond the left-field fence punctuated by a mammoth smokestack. Softball games attracted an enthusiastic walk-in crowd from the surrounding town. The locals, seeking an upper-deck view, parked their vehicles alongside the road above the right-field fence watching the games from inside their cars while others sat in chairs on the road’s shoulder. Many a night a group of steadfast men on the bank above the right-field fence whittled throughout the evening until after sundown. With a flourish, they torched the newly carved shavings signaling the anticipated end to the proceedings. My softball game plan, forged from numerous self-imposed lessons, mandated hitting safely past infielders and away from outfielders. Not an elite athlete by any means, I did have a natural flair for generating base hits by manipulating my wrists imparting spin to the softball with day-to-day placement precision. On a Sunday afternoon I remember in detail a defensive play during a local softball tournament that was rapidly coming to an end. Setting the stage, it was the bottom of the seventh inning, one out, runners on first and second base with the local team leading by three runs. From my third base position, I scanned the field, extracted and assimilated the information anticipating the next series of moves. Once the pitcher released the ball, I played by feel awareness alone, machine-like, but flexible within the framework of the unfolding play. The hitter centered the bat on the pitched ball sending a line drive deep to left-center field that landed safely bounding towards the left field fence. Concurrently, the trained and experienced defensive play-makers responded efficiently to the developing action dictated by the ball flight pattern, the speeding runners, and the overall dynamics of the game. I moved up the third base line toward home plate a few feet, then, stepped inside the foul line as the runner from second rounded the third base bag scoring easily. The runner from first base was now rounding third. From my position inside the foul line, I witnessed the runner speeding past me towards home plate as the shortstop unleashed a strong, straight line throw to home. The runner's speed, the velocity and the direction of the thrown ball prompted my position on the field to change closer to home plate outside the foul line.

14

The relay arrived well ahead of the runner to the catcher waiting at home plate. Aware that he would be out at home, the runner slid to a stop, turned, ran straight back up the line to third base. I was in the right spot. I shouted, “throw the ball’’, and that he did; a perfect throw directed to the middle of the runner’s back. As the ball nestled into my glove, my peripheral vision spotted the hitter steam rolling around second base. Presently, being perceptually aware the runner shielded the third base umpire from view, I slipped the ball out of my glove before applying the phantom tag to the runner’s back. As the base umpire signaled out, I routed the ball to second base with a quick release forearm-wrist throw. The alert second baseman tagged the shocked runner: double play/end of the inning/end of the game/end of the tournament. The members of my team came storming off the field in celebration. The opposing team roared at the umpire that I did not tag the runner. Fortunately, the base umpire, a man of integrity, did not call what he did not see. I was a bit stunned by how the play evolved. Since there was no instant replay, no do-over, or re-enactment to guide me, only later, did I try to elucidate how my mental and physical processes allowed me to orchestrate the game’s final act?

Parallel Processing

Parallel processing is the ability of athletic intelligence to (1) individually and collectively analyze visual color, motion, shape, and depth (2) compare this information with information sorted, cataloged, and stored and (3) combine all this information to make decisions that are exceedingly quick, continuously updated, and virtually seamless.

Sun Shadow

My self-activated sun shadow presented a visual guide to the development of a balanced golf swing. However, the shadow of the sun became a sensory visual dilemma that persists to this day. As standard backyard practice I addressed the ball with the shadow extended out from my left side down the target line as a visual barrier to promote a firm left side through impact. Concurrently, I practiced addressing the ball with my shadow directly in front of me. The location of this sun shadow provided a visual guide to help train a non-swaying balanced swing. I liked the idea but the idea was flawed. The sun’s shadow falls in various positions during play. The different angles caused mental perception irregularities that impaired my swing plane execution. To this day, I prefer to play on cloudy days. Seeking a remedy I framed the navigational map of the target line. Distant objects like a tree, rock, or a building served as visual cues aligned 90 degrees to the target line. Guideline: As I walk up to the ball, I observe an object in the distance that aligns 90 degrees to the target line. Then, I extend the clubhead at the object with the shaft serving as a right angle to the intended line of flight; next, I set my feet accordingly. I maintain this visual-motor memory image of 90-degree orientation from the address position to the top of the backswing to the downswing release through impact. My alignment 90-degree rule helped the sun shadow problem and proved a useful remedial tool to countermeasure random disorienting sight lines that I encountered on the golf course.

19

Sight Lines A brick wall was the domain of various made-up rubber ball games. One day I utilized the brick wall as a training aid. The sight line wall reinforced the alignment set-up and swing plane. I liked the idea but the idea was flawed. The wall had created a false orientation perception compared to reality. A suitably shaped golf course presents many random disorienting sight lines. The golf course mowing lines, divots, fairway-rough lines, and tee box marker placements present sight lines that disrupt the spatial perception of the golf shot at hand. An offset oriented swing plane attempted to compensate for the disparity between perception and reality. The discouraging response was a ball flight pattern left or right of the target. In essence, peripheral vision has created a false orientation/double cross/dual target directionality.

Built-In Remedies for Built-In Faults Perception Must Match Reality To add to my dilemma, once in the address position looking at the target accentuated intrinsic positional sight line visual distortion. Guideline: As a supplemental remedial scheme to my 90-degree alignment rule, I created within myself, an internal visual, motor imagery system to shield myself from external disturbances. In time, I developed an inner sense of feel awareness direction that serves as a /firewall/ shield to neutralize interfering visual disturbances, target directionality, and false orientation perceptions. Today, once set, (1) alignment procedure completed (2) internal, visual motor /firewall/ shield switched on (3) target sight line framed fixed (4) target distance internally processed: I stop looking at the target.

20

Offset

In addition to intrinsic positional sight line distortion in response to random golf course disorientating sight lines and sun shadows I possess a natural spatial awareness distortion that produces a ball flight pattern 20 degrees to the right of the target regardless of address position. My 90-degree alignment rule is a conscious effort at the address position to produce an accurate ball flight down the target line. In order to be swing ready the alignment I feel in my mind must correspond to what I see on the ground. I needed a subconscious effort as well as a conscious effort to succeed. One day an idea manifested itself in the form of right-hand rotation. Guideline: I use my right hand as an alignment reminder at the address position by spreading my fingers out in front of me down the shaft line with the index finger pointing 90 degrees to the target line. My little finger indicates my natural offset ball flight pattern. I rotate my hand counterclockwise so that the little finger points 90 degrees to the target line. I feel myself rotating slightly to the left. It was a revelation. Repeating this hand-wrist maneuver whenever my swing feels askew sends a reminder to the sub-conscious mind to re-calibrate my body positioning to correspond to the correct alignment.

21

Paroxysm To my shock and indignation, an alarming hand paroxysm appeared unexpectedly. Simultaneous in motion I endured a left hand shift clockwise and a right hand shift counterclockwise the instant before impact that kindled a fast freeze, traumatic, tension tight, gridlock. I was in serious trouble. I attempted to seek control of this double hand wrenching spasm. Forsaking the interlocking grip, I tried the overlapping grip, the reverse overlapping grip, and the ten-fingered grip. I explored various grip pressure points from the fingers to the palms and tested separating my hands at different lengths. The ten-fingered, hands separated, palm grip, helped immensely. This catastrophic hand spasm glitch often resurfaced but faded in time. Guideline: Sedulously seeking relief, I perceptually suppressed neural memory access to my disruptive spasmodic fingers. Furthermore, I enabled a mental discipline idea to induce the cells in my arms and shoulders to swell. Real or imagined, I proceeded to stimulate fluids within each cell to flow outward in all directions generating, within me, a supple, relaxed feel. Fortunately, in time, even the feel of my fingers wanting to jump at impact subsided as I retained control of the club with my palms.

Motor Memory Long-term motor memory units are difficult to re-write. Is developing new motor memory units best? Or is a transformation best? Or, is modification best? Or is reduction and replacement best? I have employed all of the above to advantage.

Built-In Remedies for Built-In Faults Perception Must Match Reality

24

Motor Memory I undeniably played many a game puzzled and flustered. Once I considered that potent motor memory dynamics linked to my past extensive athletic endeavors were, deleteriously, mismatched athletically action coordinated and, intrusively, readily activated, I reasoned cause, effect, and remedy. 1) I learned to suppress my strong motor memory tendency to both bend my left wrist and to cock my right wrist. The cocked right wrist was, in part, responsible for a divergent swing path through impact. 2) I measured my strong motor memory tendency to lift my head vertically after swing ignition by observing my hat bill. The slightest vertical lift any time after swing ignition sets in motion a divergent swing path. Indeed, my hat bill provides an available method to monitor any lift of my head. 3) I was perplexed and annoyed observing divots that slanted decidedly left of the target line. The release of the cocked right wrist was, in part, to blame but, a stored strong motor memory tendency to open my shoulders to the target at impact was, also, responsible. My hat bill is utilized to visually center my shoulders to the target line during release at impact. Suitably shaped, my backyard practice golf swing through thick blade grass provides a means to monitor any residual discordant motor memory as evidenced by impact torque accelerated sound, ball strike release visualization, and target sight line perception.

Tetrahedron

Time and time again I have experienced a feel sensation communication process in action. During the time I was contemplating a feeling of success relating to pre-swing form a feel sensation information bundle surged into conscious awareness. In a flash the information bundle was transcribed into word form. The word was /triangle/. The triangle, in time, evolved into a tetrahedron. More feel than visual the tetrahedron enveloped the pre-swing stance. The four vertices are in place at the address position: (1) One vertex anchored the clubhead at address. (2) One vertex anchored the projected rotational swing arc at the top of the backswing. (3) The two vertices on the ground behind me anchored the target line. The line from the clubhead vertex to the top vertex above and behind my head served to shape a proficient body rotation. The triangular side faces promoted a feeling of balance while the triangular back face stabilized my back. The triangular bottom face produced a 90-degree target line. Pleased and delighted I became immersed in the process of constructing the tetrahedron from the original triangle. However, now, the tetrahedron resides deep within the confines of my subconscious mind only to be resurrected by feel awareness alone.

Often, a sudden flash of insight emerges in word form, a product of parallel processing, no doubt. Time and time again, I have experienced a feel sensation communication process in action.

Pendulum As I addressed the ball, a subconscious superimposed feel awareness image of a free-swinging weighted steel pendulum bubbled up into my conscious mind. I was amazed. Time and time again, I have experienced a feel sensation communication in action. That day, a feel sensation bundle surged into my word descriptive conscious mind. The word was /pendulum/. A swinging pendulum exhibits a measure of tempo, rhythm and timing that is precise and free-flowing. I visualized and applied the movement characteristics of the weighted pendulum to the anticipated swing of the golf club. It was a revelation. I became immersed in the process of constructing the pendulum rationale. Now, the pendulum rationale resides deep within the confines of my subconscious mind only to be resurrected by feel awareness alone.

Fixing On The Run The laboriously detailed process learning golf game fundamentals triggered a perplexing plethora of swing correction thoughts. Touring the golf course I was checking down an ever-expanding list of well-known swing mechanic corrections endeavoring to improve my game. In essence, I was fixing-on-the-run. Seeking salvation, I decided to learn the basic swing components one swing component at a time. Guideline: In sequential order, (1) the first step involved the mechanics of the swing component assimilated into the swing package. (2) The second step monitored the physical aspects of the swing component: activated muscles, tendons, and ligaments stretched. However, that stretched feeling quickly faded, extending to retain that stretched feel proved to be a recurring problem, consequently, steps three and four. (3) The third step involved replacing the stretched feel with an awareness motor feel that accompanied the performance of the swing component. (4) The fourth step necessitated executing the swing element by feel awareness alone with only a cursory visual verification. Learning a basic swing component seemed paramount at the time but, down the line, the swing component slipped into the background, therefore, displaying its true value as a small part of the whole.

34

The “Flying” Elbow (1) I am standing more upright at address. (2) I am reducing my hip rotation on the backswing. (3) I am extending my right elbow away from my body on the backswing while stretching upward with my left arm. (4) I am maintaining a firm left wrist throughout the length of the backswing. (5) I am bending my wrists and hands down at address effectively stretching the wrist muscles to elongate down. (6) I am positioning the golf shaft perpendicular to the target at address. (7) I am engaging an up and out lift to the clubhead following address. Over the winter, spontaneous, self-imposed lessons provided swing component changes that reconstructed my backswing. Consequently, my flat backswing became an upright backswing. The main swing component responsible was the resurrection of the “flying” right elbow. I was born-again. On a warm summer day, I arrived on the first tee on the local nine-hole golf course. An experienced teacher was there to supervise a lesson. I was fourteen. In short order, he proclaimed that I needed to correct my “flying” right elbow. I complied placing a handkerchief under my right arm to correct the right elbow swing fault. It felt strange. I followed orders until the par-three eighth. On impulse, I quietly decided to extend my right elbow. My teacher immediately admonished my efforts. I have executed the right elbow correction lesson until now. The resurrection of the “flying” elbow caused a ripple effect on the structure and execution of my golf swing. The results are amazing. Guideline: I engage a slight timing pause at the top of the upright backswing with a flared flying elbow /set/. On re-entry, the right elbow transitions straight down to my right side pulling the left arm slightly back as my left wrist rotates passively clockwise. The laid-off golf shaft creates an inside the target line downswing /set/ with a square impact /release/ as I shift my weight forward down the target line. Guideline: The elongated down hands and wrists at address respond with a free and fluid motion from the address /set/ throughout the re-entry /set/ that positions the hands and wrists for the optimum re-route /release/ through the impact area down the target line. Guideline: The perpendicular shaft at address allows the hands to rotate forward following forward press ignition. Guideline: Advantageous right leg load and release positioning provide needed structure, balance, and stability. Guideline: The upward lift of the clubhead following swing ignition positions the clubhead at the top of the backswing to sweep through the impact area on the downswing.

35

I have developed a quirky move that fills a final role before swing ignition. Guideline: Before swing ignition, I engage an upward body lift that involves lifting the shoulders up, arching the small of my back, and straightening the legs. Consequently, the clubhead lifts up and out. The weight of the club elongates my arms and wrists downward into an ideal pre-swing position. This pre-swing position /set-up/ facilitates a downswing re-focus impact zone eye sweep. This game changer move provides advantageous body positioning, relaxed feel, and enhanced ball strike release. In programming, a keyword has a special meaning. Keywords can be a command to activate or to recall the parameters of the athletic movement. The keyword phrases drive distant straight, drive distant control, and timeline drive distant loss provides a quick memory aid. Guideline: I have adopted a drive distant straight discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight pattern. Guideline: I have locked myself into a drive distant control discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance. Guideline: I have embraced a progressive timeline drive distant loss discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance. Keywords trigger memory retrieval as does sound and image. Guideline: Approaching the tee box or fairway lie (1), I practice a self-made inflected accelerated air pitched sound and (2); I visualize a free spinning wheel. The sound and the image help me feel the tempo, timing, and rhythm of the clubhead acceleration through the impact area. I have studied the art of mental discipline to achieve performance. However, to produce the desired results, my swing mechanics must be in order. Guideline: Swing mechanics lessons can only provide approximations of proper swing form. Consequently, swing mechanics approximations learned need to be adapted to golf course conditions shaping strategic swing adjustments and producing precise swing alignment. I have endeavored to perform any technique that I possess within the limits of my talent both mentally and physically throughout the game involved. On the golf course, my primary interest is to perform well-executed golf shots. Guideline: I trust the stimulus of competition delivers a rush of sustained adrenaline, intense focus, and heightened agile awareness that generates a deep state dynamic feeling of competitive vitality and composure.

36

Swing Plane In the past, I manipulated /•bending • cocking •rolling •rotating/ my wrists to achieve results. Golf is different. In time, I progressively suppressed wrist manipulation /•bending •cocking •rolling/ to achieve a more consistent /rotating wrists only/ golf swing.

My mind-body ability to make solid contact with a moving ball was an advantageous skill set. Golf is different. My moving ball contact skill set is not needed or is it? At the address position, I decided to raise the clubhead up and out creating a moving ball /mind-thought/ motor memory visual illusion.

In time, I transformed my single plane /straight back and straight through/ swing into a far more natural and a far more efficient two-plane swing. STEP (1) I engaged a very upright backswing plane to lengthen my swing path. STEP (2) The /retroactive/ “flying elbow” serves to aid backswing length and provides a power position to aid downswing release. STEP (3) An initial downswing power move /right elbow to side/ triggers a natural motor memory /re-entry/ response that alters swing plane release path to impact /two-plane swing/. STEP (4) Real or imagined my moving ball /re-focus/ visual to impact is a natural motor memory response that boosts power /rhythm/ to the swing path release.

37

STEP (5) A grandfather clock resided in the hall next to my bedroom. I like grandfather clocks. I was fascinated with the rhythm and timing of the pendulum as a child. The pendulum serves as a motor memory visualization aid: (1) •anchor |to| shoulders (2) •suspension |to| arms (3) •shaft |to| rod (4) • hands |to| couplings (5) •clubhead |to| bob.

The up and out clubhead position at address allows a forward and back movement of the clubhead /bob/ during swing ignition. I feel the rhythm and timing of the pendulum in motion. It is a revelation.

38

Mindset Indeed, my self-imposed long-running golf developmental process produced a complete golf swing unit. That was step one, now step two: to transition from an analytical mindset to a spatial awareness mindset. I performed countless self-tossed practice sessions displaying progressive spatial awareness swing approximations that efficiently produced consistent center hit softballs or baseballs blissfully devoid of cognitive manipulation. Consequently, the blueprint mental discipline that I seek exists within me. Implementing a feel awareness mindset blueprint was the second step, now, the third step: to sustain a mindset awareness shot after shot.

I learned to pitch a ball flight pattern that arched high with a right to left curve: a suburb blend of ball flight control and distance for strikes. One day the umpire clearly marked the batter’s boxes with chalk while I was waiting to pitch. This pre-game bit of activity outlined the parameters that targeted a strike behind the plate. I promptly walked the first two batters. That day and that day forward the ball flight pattern became my point of focus rather than the small target behind the plate. Indeed, the ball flight’s spatial complexities provided the ball action visual display mindset discipline I needed to throw strikes. Once again, the blueprint mental discipline that I seek exists within me.

From my position as a pitcher, I fielded a slow roller between home plate and first base. I was set to perform an effective sidearm wrist-forearm throw to first base as the runner was speeding up the line. I was shocked. My right hand locked into a fast freeze-grip. I released a weak lob to the first baseman. I was in trouble. Both alarmed and exasperated, I engaged cause, effect, and remedy. I employed conscious self-talk as a remedy, but no progress was noted. I did not consider deep subconscious performance trauma or performance repetitive movement breakdown as cause and effect. In the end, I decided to substitute a dart throw technique instead of the sidearm wrist-forearm throw technique. It worked.

39

Indeed, the dart throw created new neural pathways needed to complete the play. Did I bypass existing mental blocks that remain in my subconscious or did I eliminate motor memory existing mental blocks from my subconscious mind? I do not know. However, I do know that athletic mental blueprint disciplines exist within me. I have the tools to succeed.

Formula

((F….F) + (A….A) + (E….E)) > CONFIDENCE (HARMONY) (F) FUNDAMENTAL, (A) ANTICIPATION, AND (E) EXECUTION

My athletic performance formula of words and symbols describe a complex set of athletic interactions. In brief, the left side represents the concept that every fundamental has a corresponding anticipation (mental image planning) of that fundamental plus a corresponding physical execution of that mental image plan (anticipation). Furthermore, the right side represents confidence multiplied by the level of harmony one feels on the field of play. The yield sign indicates a progressive direction that connects the left side to the right side. Guideline: Simply stated, a proper blend of fundamentals, anticipation, and execution produces a precise athletic movement that shapes a corresponding level of confidence and harmony on the playing field.

Keys My intelligence through visual perception selectively attends the best processes to interact with neural networks of information, experiences, and abilities sorted, cataloged, and stored creating knowledge that is readily activated, and athletically action coordinated. 1) Guideline: My athletic intelligence employs a wide angle sweeping visual scan, anticipating movements, triggered or spontaneous, before or during, creating a feel anticipation snapshot: the key to everything athletic. 2) Guideline: My mind through visual, motor imagery regulates the intended movements by dialing through the various movement processes forming a mental blueprint: the key to engaging swing speed max. 3) Guideline: Crossover information flows through a conduit between descriptive language and motor awareness. Interpolative, this conduit provides a gateway buffering the translating and understanding of crisscrossing information. The result is my intellect accommodates both the impression and descriptive interpretations of athletic movements enabling direct neural memory access: the key to flawless execution. Therefore, I can construct internal representations by encoding verbal instructions into a visual-spatial format that is in a constant state of calibration and re-calibration until perception matches reality.

Deep Learning (1) Deep learning acquires information without conscious awareness of knowledge base or process of acquisition. The imagination I possess radiates enlightenment. It is a natural process without conscious thought or interference. Deep memory is complex, multilayered and instantly activated. It affects conscious thoughts and athletic actions on the field of play. This complex but natural process is efficient, precise, and consistent.

(2) Parallel processing analyzes, compares and combines multiple layered images to produce a perception depth multilayered neural network that is instantly activated and athletically action coordinated.

(3) Deep learning links |environmental cues |stored images| appropriate responses| establishes a procedural multilayered memory structure that resides below the level of conscious awareness. Deep learning is a natural and automatic process that follows a trial and error learning pattern to build, structure, and engage procedural memory to interact inside environmental athletic action parameters.

A procedural /deep state/ memory blueprint structure exists within me. It is a natural and automatic response to preparation and performance. To perform at the highest level, I must access stored procedural /deep state/ memory without conscious thought or interference.

COMMON GATEWAY INTERFACE

SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

This visualization memory aid infographic represents the idea that action word descriptions intermix with spatial feel sensations. Indeed, the blueprint to produce athletic movements are choreographed, intermixed, and mapped inside a common gateway interface that buffers the conscious and the subconscious level of feel awareness.

47

Spatial feel awareness language bubbles up from the subconscious level database that permeates through a crossover region into a common gateway interface. This interface provides a conduit that enables the subconscious information to permeate through a second crossover region at the conscious level. Sporadically, spatial language communication transcribes into a word or phrase inside the interface that reaches the conscious level in the form of descriptive language. Guideline: The conscious mind must be disciplined to send useful predetermined descriptive information through the interface that does not interfere with the subconscious level thought processes that are crisscrossing within the common gateway interface. This crisscrossing information from the conscious level and the subconscious level in the interface must be in a pure, disciplined form to avoid confusion, conflict, and ineffectiveness. Simply stated, the common gateway interface allows the athletic, mental state of operation “in the zone to form, expand and flourish.

Flashpoint I am in the flow. I can feel it. Massive cognitive brain neural network amplification has triggered a sudden burst of electrically charged energy •flashpoint• creating a high-level conscious perception awareness. Short-term or long-term, real or imagined, I am in the zone. The conscious mind broadcasts detailed instructions to a multitude of unconscious cognitive processors operating in parallel to form an impressive amalgamation that facilitates the transmission of complex information to achieve the desired outcome. The conscious mind may understand and may send descriptive instructions to the subconscious mind, but flow immersion is a feel awareness operation. The conscious mind is immersed in a flow to mobilize the many unconscious specialized neural networks. Specialized unconscious processors respond to the incoming conscious messages. Flexible unconscious information flows into a high-level conscious perception level. The unconscious processors provide action dynamic elements (1) memory recall (2) visualization rehearsal communique (3) directional spatial map instructions (4) visual imagery anticipation scenarios (5) consensus outcomes. This autonomous high-level conscious perception awareness is full of loops, and bi-directional projections as messages propagate downward as much as upwards. The exchange of messages is selected to support a consensus interpretation by suppressing alternate interpretations that do not fit. Consensus interpretations are calibrated and re-calibrated to achieve the desired outcome.

So, am I able to manually turn on the switch? No, I am not. So, how do I cross-over into a high-level conscious perception state? I can speculate. It is a mindset issue. So, again, how do I cross-over? I trust the natural process to self-actuate.

Resistance The visualization image below represents the bypass of inner core tension or resistance that is the primary cause of power loss and inefficiency. Indeed, the blueprint to produce athletic movements are choreographed, intermixed, and mapped inside a common gateway interface that buffers the conscious and the subconscious level of feel awareness. This diagram serves as a visualization communication spatial description that appeals to the mathematical subconscious level of spatial feel awareness. Rationale: Pockets of tension or resistance encountered interfere with the direct neural memory access that permits the flawless execution of athletic movements. Resistance may be in the form of mismatched motor memory dynamics, past failures, or spatial feel awareness uncertainties. The shape of the blue oval represents resistance. The lines represent neural memory access pathways. The idea is to eliminate the deleterious effects caused by pockets of resistance that result in power loss and inefficiency. Image A represents the mental effort to push through the resistance. Partially successful, the result is a slowed and contaminated product. The image listed as B represents the mental effort to bypass the pockets of resistance that allows for an uninhibited flow of direct neural memory communication.

The above visualization exercise is a positive step. I endeavor to perform athletic movements free from the crippling effects of tension. The resistance image above is a visualization tool of value.

Spin Wheel Spin Hand spinning a bicycle tire captivates the imagination. Rotary metal hub focus, rotating spokes depth perception and accelerating tire peripheral vision is a spatial fascination. The visual display is charismatic. The bicycle tire observation intuitively connected a spinning bicycle tire and a rotary athletic movement. My athletic intelligence through selective motor memory information, experiences, and abilities produced a visualization training aid that linked (1) the smooth acceleration of a bicycle tire and (2) the smooth acceleration of a rotary athletic movement. It is a revelation. I needed to create a visualization aid to replace the spinning tire. I researched images of spinning wheels: picture and graphic, simple and complex, single and multiple. A single visual cog-wheel produced the desired response.

[SPIN-WHEEL-SPIN]

The cog-wheel color and bevel provide a depth perception that I value. The circle within a circle provides a center of focus. The peripheral cogs display an orderly functional use. I visualize the cog-wheel spinning as I engage in rotary athletic movements replicating the tempo, timing, and acceleration of the spinning bicycle tire. Keywords /spin wheel spin/provide a quick memory aid. I have responded well to this image that serves as visualization spatial description aid that appeals to the mathematical subconscious level of spatial feel awareness. It works for me.

Flow Cycle Perpetual motion machines, once in motion, stay in motion. It is a thought-provoking concept. My observations inspired a visualization rationale that transforms a time lag sequence of events into a continuous flow of events. My observations inspired a visualization rationale that transforms a time lag sequence of events into a continuous flow of events. Rationale: On the playing field there is a time gap between the end of an individual action event and the beginning of the next individual action event. I aim to narrow that gap to a minimum. Consequently, I am immersed in a continuous flow cycle sequence, performing one individual event followed closely by another. Continuous motion flow thought processes engage a constant flow of individual action events. Subsequently, the flow cycle sequence extends flow sequence /in-the-zone/ time frame immersion. Therefore, on the playing field, the influential gap in time between the ending of one individual action event and the beginning of the next individual action event is minimized. I feel that I am executing one individual action event in a flow cycle sequence time and time again. Pleased and delighted, I have constructed a flow cycle rationale from a perpetual motion idea that, now, resides within the confines of my subconscious mind only to be resurrected by feel awareness alone.

I like it. It reaches deep into my subconscious mind. I can feel it. The infographic zone (bubble) image above represents a subconscious management process that activates a time frame, zone conversion operation. Zone (bubble) spacing represents the elusive but attainable in the zone performance(s). The zone (bubble) merger is an intermediate step to narrow the spacing to achieve immersion. The goal is to remain in the zone (bubble) to sustain optimum performance. The struggle I experience in athletic endeavors emanates from entering in and out of the zone (bubble) immersion. Re-enter strategies activated, de-activated, and re-activated vary in time duration and intensity. The scheme is that I manage a time frame, zone conversion operation through subconscious imagery. I have constructed infographic images in the form of conscious descriptive language: Nevertheless, the infographic images I have constructed are understood and activated by subconscious communication. Simply stated, the conscious mind explains in descriptive language the play action movements, and the subconscious mind performs the task in feel awareness alone.

I relate well to the infographic images that I have constructed. I relate to this one. It is a fit. It looks right. It feels right.

55

Biorhythms

The idea is that random biorhythm cycles and random pattern mind-body relationships coordinate to influence athletic performance. Biorhythm cycles and random mind-body patterns synchronize to engage information, perception and memory to enable readily activated athletic action coordinated movements. In theory, biorhythm cycles amplitude and duration measurements are random. Simply stated, random biorhythmic cycles converge to form random pattern peaks and valleys that support random pattern /sharp |flat| sharp/ athletic mind-body relationships.

56

In The Zone Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable. It is a paradox. I divided the process into ten distinct /in the zone/components. Some components are assets. Other components are a work in progress. Also, there are various mind-body cycles and various random on, off, and refresh buttons to consider. It is a puzzle.

ABSORPTION I am absorbed in the game. I like it. I feel that nothing outside exists. It is a comfort. Furthermore, once there, I feel I have always been there. Total absorption I can do. It is a skill and a natural asset.

AUTOTELIC I am a process person. Autotelic is a descriptive word that fits. The activity is its own reward. I like solitary play. Solitary play is an autotelic means of expression that I embrace. It is a blessing. Autotelic I can do. It is a skill and an asset.

ANTICIPATION I am a thoughtful /problem-solving/ perceptive person. My spatial feel awareness skills are polished to a high level. Yes, I know. Still waters run deep. Moment to moment anticipation whether real or imagined, triggered or spontaneous creates a feel anticipation blueprint to follow. Knowing what to do before it transpires is a comfort. Anticipation I can do. It is a skill and an asset.

57

BALANCE To be considered is a balance on the scale between intensity and tranquility in day-to-day game action. There are also random biorhythmic mind-body balance cycles to be considered. It is a work in progress.

CONTROL As communication and understanding permeate across fluid boundaries, the information flow process, fluctuating in strength and influence, is shaped. At times I have engaged an efficient subconscious kinetic energy flow free from conscious control interference. Other times conscious control interferes with the information process. It is a work in progress.

FLOW The conscious mind may understand and may send descriptive instructions to the subconscious mind, but flow immersion is a feel awareness operation. Being dialed-in time and time again is an amazing experience. However, flow interruptions, peaks, and valleys boggle my mind. Could biorhythms, mind-body relationships, and energy flow cycles be the answer? Where is the on, off, or refresh button? I think I know, but I am not sure. It is a work in progress.

FOCUS One’s skilled performance is paramount to one’s well-being. I like to concentrate on the task at hand. To be free from outside disturbances is wonderful. Focus I can do. It is a skill and an asset.

58

IMMERSION On the field of play I am totally immersed within the framework of the game. I am pleased and delighted. The game itself is the center of attention, not I. Immersion I can do. It is a skill and an asset.

TEMPO At times I feel that mind-body movements are seamless and effortless without tension or resistance. Maximum efficiency and speed of movement are enabled. Other times there is a resistance or tension dilemma that impedes smooth tempo. It is a work in progress.

TIME Time transformation is a universal effect of flow. In one sense time passes quickly but in another sense time slows down. This transformation of time is a natural occurrence.

59

In The Zone

Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable.

60

Proprioception (1) Proprioception is a subconscious level direct neural access to a movement or position sense that originates in the muscles, tendons, and joints.

In preparation and performance, I am alert and open to feel awareness perception. Energy and information flow provide clarity/depth/detail. My decision-making adjustments and adaptions are short-term and long-term without judgment or expectations. Mind-body movements exhibit control and balance. Efficient tempo and movement speed are enabled. Kinetic energy and information flow free from conscious interference. I am in-the-zone.

(2) Self-organization is a natural subconscious integration process that produces intricate athletic movements. Is there a built-in blueprint to moderate the process? Is there an on-off switch? Is there a set of instructions to shape self-organization? In theory, implicit memory experiences interconnect in the performance of a task without conscious awareness of these experiences. Subconscious implicit memory activates and links various memory neural networks. The on-off switch I have experienced many times. It is a subconscious spontaneous occurrence. Peaks and valleys are the results. I trust the natural process to self-actuate. A procedural blend /•knowledge

process achieves a self-organizing/self-regulating turn-key blueprint that monitors/modulates the mind-body continuum.

61

(3) I have a sense that experience repeats itself. Time maps embodied and embedded in neural network layers intertwine past present and future. Prior experience imagery recall interconnects awareness anticipation scenarios to shape and re-shape complex athletic movements in real-time performance. I am impressed.

62

Information Graphic Visualization Information visualization involves selection, representation and transformation in a form /•color •balance •depth/ that facilitates conscious as well as subconscious communication and interaction. Computer-generated images reinforce (1) stored memory unit recall (2) multiple image viewpoint information detail and (3) image response feel right approval. Information visualization graphics serve as conscious and subconscious interactive mnemonics that support memory communication.

My computer-generated images provide an excellent memory visualization aid that strengthens subconscious flow communication.

•THIRD PERSON (VISUAL IMMERSION) IN THE ZONE

Time and time again I have encountered the ultimate immersion experience on the field of play. In the first person, I am aware of the action as I am the one in action. In the third person, I am unaware of the action as I am the one in observation. The ultimate experience is a deep state subconscious immersion in the zone phenomena that embodies a first and third person experience. The conscious mind relinquishes direct control of action movements. I am both aware and unaware. Is it an out of body experience? No, but it feels that way.

Parallel Processing

Multiple memory coding systems integrate complex patterns of sensory and motor input information into visual representations and computations that form an intricate pattern of action directives. Kinetic depth, mobile agents, and peripheral approximations combine time sequence scenes into a visual-spatial information map. Speed and accuracy to detect, localize, and process relevant information facilitates performance. The computation process integrates multiple sensory and motor details at each phase of operation. Sensory and motor input information update the computation process. Navigational parameters, temporal intervals, and rule-based interactions guide integrated decision-making options. The computation process compiles all possible outcomes to formulate effective movement actions. My position in space, movement actions, and internal sensory spatial map complete the memory model computation process. My attention shifts across modalities to quickly evaluate complex spatial patterns. Swift and flexible actions mesh together to engage movement action directives. The perception process applies various updated probabilistic memory models to organize incoming sensory and motor information into a real-time spatial multidimensional blueprint. Frame by frame real-time spatial-temporal information is shaped and re-shaped through anticipated scenario interactions. Visual attention computation delays movement action execution. Action-reaction time intervals are present. Anticipated sequential spatial-temporal action frames circumvent computation delay time intervals. Calibrated and re-calibrated anticipated action directives support reaction-time reduction. Quick reaction time experiences to action stimuli indicate reduced action-reaction time intervals. Quick decision-making action movements on a performance level are vital. Moment by moment anticipation is a bridge that streamlines the delay period.

Crisscross Two fundamental processing systems control mind-body action movements. The conscious mind is intentional, analytic, slow, and quickly changed. The subconscious mind is automatic, holistic, fast and resistant to change. The interactions between the two parallel systems are bi-directional. Reactions to environmental stimuli are conscious controlled or subconscious controlled or a mixture of both. Conscious and subconscious processing systems are parallel and interactive. One or the other may play a dominant role. Information crisscrosses throughout both systems to solve operational mind-body action movements. The conscious mind solves problems in a logical descriptive manner. The subconscious mind engages automated motor movement control. The conscious mind operates through verbal abstract symbols and words to map strategies, scenarios, and techniques. The subconscious mind through experience identifies, interprets and stores environmental cues outside conscious awareness.

The subconscious mind engages nonverbal images to formulate a blueprint to follow. The subconscious process system applies the right combination of automated abilities to a high degree of precision. Conscious and subconscious processes operate in concert and/or work in opposition. The dual-system speed combination exhibit upside or downside consequences depending on use. On the upside, the conscious mind responds, analyzes and coordinates decisions to boost automated subconscious performance levels. On the downside, the opposing speeds in combination cause a mindset conflict that produces slow actions and reactions even a fast freeze. The battle for control elicits emotional responses that interfere with performance.

69

Interlinked

The idea is that communication is interlinked regardless of distance, motion or location is puzzling, provocative, and appealing. Incoming sensory information, instant memory retrieval, and virtual anticipation projections are cross-correlated to produce moment by moment action coordinated movements. Incoming sensory signals interlink internal cognitive cellular communication systems to produce internal virtual images that are identical to the observed real images in the external environment. The external images in space and the internal virtual images flow at the same moment in time. Encoded and decoded memories are interlinked and cross-correlated to form energy patterns that crisscross throughout the brain regardless of distance and location. Moment by moment external real-time motion and internal virtual image motion coexist in perceptual feel awareness. Virtual anticipation projections are instant knowledge of the next moment in time. Moment by moment projections provides action movement scenarios. Sensory information, memory retrieval, and virtual anticipation projections are instantly coordinated to produce moment by moment action movement responses.

FLOW

LEVEL I Self-motivated purpose and resolution to perform well during high-action and high-skill activities is a natural flow immersion response. Goals that match abilities and interests are essential to the flow experience. Immersion flow experiences are present at a functional level to produce positive results. All flow immersion experiences are integrated into a unified flow [autotelic] life experience.

LEVEL II There are definite on the field [incidents] that boost the flow experience to a higher state of immersion awareness. It is true. Outside stimulus events effects performance in a positive direction. I will attest to that. The effect is short-term in duration. In time, the boosted flow immersion experience will settle down to a lower level.

LEVEL III The optimal flow immersion experience is a [self-actuated] subconscious flow surge that transforms performance into an art form. It is wonderful. The effect is long-term in duration, locked-in, and effortless in execution. In time, the transformation flow experience will subside.

Routine (1) Age-related play limitations diminished my opportunities to generate deep breathing. I needed a deep breathing routine. It was a blessing. Today, I am the pilot of a well-developed, tension dampening, deep breathing routine that I refresh throughout the day. (2) I follow a set routine on a lush practice green located next to the tenth hole on the back nine. I start putting a few balls at various distances from the practice hole concentrating on feedback feel. Yes, I do take aim. Next, I have three different chipping techniques I practice. Again it is the feel of the ball on the clubface that is important. Yes, I dial-in distance. Next, I half-swing, then, full-swing through dense grass. One or two practice swings suffice. My focus is the feel of the swing. The thick blade grass provides a means to monitor impact torque acceleration sound, ball strike release visualization and target sight line perception. (4) Upon arrival at the first tee, l stand ready, waiting for that sudden expeditiously direct flow of anticipated impact that sends a golf ball to its destination. Guideline: My athletic intelligence employs a wide angle sweeping visual scan, anticipating movements, triggered or spontaneous, before or during, creating a feel anticipation snapshot: the key to everything athletic. A motion or the anticipation of motion is the key to feeling the body athletic. Consequently; I stay in motion, first, swinging the club back and forth with an oily wrist action motion, then, second, performing a half-swing or two through dense grass noting sound and feel. I am ready. Guideline: My mind through visual, motor imagery regulates the intended movements by dialing through the various movement processes forming a mental blueprint: the key to engaging swing speed max. Guideline: Approaching the tee box (1), I practice a self-made inflected accelerated air pitched sound and (2); I visualize a free spinning wheel. The sound and the image help me feel the tempo, timing, and rhythm of the clubhead acceleration through the impact area. Guideline: Simply stated, a proper blend of fundamentals, anticipation, and execution produces a precise athletic movement that shapes a corresponding degree of confidence and harmony on the playing field.

75

Guideline: Advantageous right leg load and release positioning provide needed structure, balance, and stability. The drop step is a variation of the square stance set depending on the level of a lie, ball location and comfort. Selectively, I drop the flared right foot back promoting a left leg load and release, or I drop the flared left foot back supporting a right leg load and release. The drop step positioning compensates left knee and lower back issues. As I finish framing my left foot drop step over the ball, my wide angle visual eye scan anticipates the swing path of the clubhead through the impact area. (5) Once set; my alignment procedure completed; my internal visual, motor shield switched on; the target line fixed framed and the target distance internally processed; I forward press to engage swing ignition. (6) Due to major surgery and diminishing body elasticity I have suffered a drastic loss of distance. In cold weather play, I have endured an additional loss of distance. Guideline: I embraced a progressive timeline drive distant progressive discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance. A well-executed shot off the first tee that travels so far and no farther I accept.

Impact! Deep-state energy waves resonate throughout one’s mind-body continuum. Complex cognitive neurophysiological operations produce implicit reactions. The shot-making process in action I value best.

76

Swing Path Swing path execution takes a bit of work and needs to be repeated for every shot. Patience is its own reward. There is much to be done before swing ignition.

Within the “on-deck circle area I practice a half-swing sweep. I observe the accelerated swing path through the impact area as the clubhead brushes the grass. Simultaneously, I hear the brushing of the grass that produces the sound of the accelerated swing path through the impact area. This sight and sound repetitive action visualization aid is an excellent feel awareness primer that anticipates impact zone dynamics.

77

My “on-deck circle” practice is complete. Next, I approach the ball. (1) I view the target from a position behind the ball. I visualize the sight line. As I walk to the address area, I finger-draw the sight line to the ball noting a distinguishing spot 1 to 3 inches distance in front of the ball. (2) I bend my body forward breathing deep, then, forcefully exhale. The difference in the flow of my swing is dramatic. Deep breathing dampens inner tension that can slow or fast freeze my downswing release. (3) Next, I walk to the address position sighting an object in the distance 90° to the target line. I set my feet accordingly. A quick look at the object affirms my stance. (4) I execute my 20° alignment procedure by placing my right hand down the shaft line with the index finger pointing 90° to the target line. I rotate my hand counterclockwise so that the little finger points 90 degrees to the target line. I feel myself rotating slightly to the left. (5) Next, I lift my body upward. Concurrently, shoulders rise, lower back arches inward, clubhead rises and wrists elongate down. It seems a bit complicated in written form, but practice makes perfect.

My recently constructed pre-shot routine component, body lift, creates a pre-set kinesthesis foundation that supports a free-flowing swing release performance. The lifting of my shoulders sets in motion a corresponding lift of the grounded clubhead. The driver is lifted 4 inches up and 3 inches out. The lift measurements are progressively less throughout the club set. My eyes re-focus from the ball position in front of the grounded club to the lifted clubface above the ground. I feel the weight of the clubhead as my wrists and forearms slightly elongate down. A rotational forward press ignites swing ignition. Backswing to downswing transition enables my hands and wrists to rotate clockwise re-routing the swing path. I have re-focused my eyes to the ball position on the ground. Yes, the operative word is natural. The body lift is a feel natural technique. The re-routed swing path and the re-focused impact zone eye sweep is a revelation.

Could a re-routed swing path and a re-focused eye sweep be a motor memory key to swing speed max? Indeed, it could. Simply stated, the body-lift pre-shot component provides advantageous body positioning, relaxed feel, and enhanced ball strike release.

Octogenarian (1) I quietly experienced a milestone birth date that was both seamless and profound. A super senior time passage crossover that signaled the beginning of a lifelong final fit. Indeed, the super senior permissive shift to the forward tees proved an excellent drive distant option.

I am pleased. My compulsion to hit distant drives is suppressed. The harmful effects of superfluous wrist manipulation, excessive backswing extension, and swing speed intensification have diminsihed. I am delighted. (2) Mental discipline allows the athletic state of operation /in the zone/ to form, expand and flourish. To produce the desired results, my swing mechanics must be in order. Guideline: Swing mechanics lessons can only provide approximations of proper swing form. Consequently, swing mechanics approximations learned need to be adapted to the golf course conditions shaping strategic swing adjustments and producing precise swing alignment. My alignment 90-degree rule remediated the sun shadow problem and proved a useful remedial tool for other glitches including random lines, angles, and sight lines. Nevertheless, to be swing ready, the alignment I feel in my mind must correspond to what I see on the ground. (3) One summer day, by chance occurrence, my playing partner was a man nineteen years my senior who played the golf game straight to the hole. We played the back nine together on that hot July afternoon demonstrating characteristic focus and steady speed of play. (4) The winding well-manicured fairways of the back nine offer topographically high and low views of many impressive houses beautifully landscaped lawns and distant cattle farmland hills and valleys. Tall wild grass, wooded areas, and grassy mounds surround the fairways. The isolated most distant fairways feature an open meadow bordered by a meandering creek. (5) The midsummer heat registered 95°. That was fine with me. I have always thrived in the heat of the day. Remarkably, my octogenarian playing partner was reasonably comfortable with the heat. Touring the back nine that July afternoon, there was on display a form of competitive vitality that was natural, harmonious and therapeutic.

However, time and time again, I have reconstructed the various components of my newly constructed upright swing to proper form by following a set of sequential steps. Guideline: In sequential order, (1) the first step involved the mechanics of the swing component. (2) The second step monitored the physical aspects of the swing component; activated muscles, tendons, and ligaments stretched.

81

(3) Keyword phrases provide a quick reference memory aid to activate or recall athletic movement parameters.

[90°RULE] Guideline: As I walk up to the ball, I observe an object in the distance that aligns 90 degrees to the target line. Then, I extend the clubhead at the object with the shaft serving as a right angle to the intended line of flight; next, I set my feet accordingly. I maintain this visual-motor memory image of 90-degree orientation from the address position to the top of the backswing to the downswing release through impact. My alignment procedure works well on golf course fairways constructed to allow a target line fairway flow straight to pin placement. My ball flight drive pattern is a fade. I target the center of the fairway. Consequently, my fairway lie tends to be center or center-right. Pin placement on the green side left disrupts the fairway flow target line. Harmony and confidence are course management factors: (1) Follow the fairway flow to the right side of the green away from pin placement or (2) follow the more difficult fairway flow target line to the left side of the green close to pin placement.

[20°OFFSET] Guideline: I use my right hand as an alignment reminder at the address position by spreading my fingers out in front of me down the shaft line with the index finger pointing 90 degrees to the target line. My little finger indicates my natural offset ball flight pattern. I rotate my hand counterclockwise so that the little finger points 90 degrees to the target line. I feel myself rotating slightly to the left. The offset alignment procedure has provided a means to remedy the pin placement on the green side left that disrupts the fairway flow target line to the right side of the green. It is a unique remedial tool, but it works for me.

[SET-SET-RELEASE] Guideline: I engage a slight timing pause at the top of the upright backswing with a flared flying elbow /set/. On re-entry, the right elbow transitions straight down to my right side pulling the left arm slightly back as my left wrist rotates passively clockwise. The laid-off shaft creates an inside the target line downswing /set/ with a square impact /release/ as I shift my weight forward down the target line. The top of my backswing features the right elbow position up and out. The right elbow quickly transitions to my right side at the beginning of the downswing directing a laid-off shaft slot for entry into the impact zone. Timing is critical. It is a bit of a complex move, but it works.

82

[DRIVE DISTANT STRAIGHT] Guideline: I have adopted a drive distant straight discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight pattern. My membership golf course provides a memory record of my tee shot straight long drives. I observe from the tee box visual spots on the fairway that locate my best straight or nearly straight tee shots. It is detrimental to my swing tempo timing and rhythm to attempt to hit the ball a straight distance length to match my best past efforts. I recognize the limits of my ability to hit the ball a straight length max. A well-executed driver shot from the tee box that travels so far and no farther, I accept.

[DRIVE DISTANT CONTROL] Guideline: I have locked myself into a drive distant control discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance. Membership par three pin placements provide a memory record of my scattered shot dispersal pattern. It is detrimental to my swing tempo, timing, and rhythm to demand a dialed-in length and a dialed-in ball flight pattern. A well-executed shot regardless of moderate differences in distance and ball flight pattern, I accept.

[SWING SPEED MAX] Guideline: My mind through visual, motor imagery regulates the intended movements by dialing through the various movement processes forming a mental blueprint: the key to engaging swing speed max. Time and time again, I struggle to scale down inner core tension that impedes my blueprint mental execution to engage swing speed max. Consequently, as a routine, I complete an extreme deep breathing procedure that encompasses bending over, filling my lungs with air, then, forcefully exhaling to dampen inner core tension. Also, I tense and relax my hands/shoulders.

I have encountered lapses in swing mechanics comprised of swing components already learned and incorporated into my complete swing unit that need a reminder remedy or quick fix. Right leg lock and load come to mind. There are more. It’s a short list. All I need is a quick fix.

83

Keyword phrases are an index entry that identifies specific memory record information from database memory retrieval systems.

Guideline: Crossover information flows through a conduit between descriptive language and motor awareness. Interpolative, this conduit provides a gateway buffering the translating and understanding of crisscrossing information. The result is that my intellect accommodates both the impression and descriptive interpretations of athletic movements enabling direct neural memory access: the key to flawless execution. Guideline: The conscious mind must be disciplined to send useful predetermined descriptive information through the interface that does not interfere with the subconscious level thought processes that are crisscrossing within the common gateway interface. This crisscrossing information from the conscious level and the subconscious level in the interface must be in a pure, disciplined form to avoid confusion.

(4) My member four hundred and thirty-acre tear-shaped island golf course is geographically set apart from the surrounding community by a river controlled by a nearby dam. Wild turkeys, ducks, geese and deer roam at will day and night. Touring the front nine one may view the wake made by outboard motor boats cruising on the water, picturesque houses on a distant high cliff, and a long time abandoned road tunnel visually framed below a rust-colored truss bridge spanning across the broad river. (5) On the number 13 hole, I joined a husband and wife team who were middle age, trail card, capable players. A brief observation produced a favorable impression. I had a good feeling about their competitive playing relationship on the golf course. The golfing couple standing on the green watched as I prepared for a long bunker shot. My pitching wedge sand shot soared high in the air landing on the small upper tier of the green rolling to within five feet from the hole. “Just like watching on TV,’’ she said. “Thank you,” I said.

MIND-BODY Thought processes choreographed, intermixed, and mapped within a complex mind-body mechanism coordinate movements in a seamless sequence to complete a task. Mind-body components process crisscross information to achieve equilibrium and harmony. In theory, mind-body component boundaries serve to buffer, intermix, overlap, or layer information at various levels. As communication and understanding permeate across fluid boundaries, the information flow process, fluctuating in strength and influence, is shaped. In essence, the overlapping components dominate in the zone action that produces the desired results. Rationale: My mind is continuously engaging individual mind-body components and overlapping components in a complex flow of action to achieve balance and harmony.

Mindset Flow

Day-to-day mindset flow endeavors to achieve balance and harmony.

IN THE ZONE A spontaneous in-the-zone transition event is a perplexing but pleasing experience. Before the number 6 hole, conscious control interference had become a tension cause and effect problem. Maybe high tension was the cause of the interference, or maybe the interference was the effect of high tension or maybe a combination of both. The five par number six hole does not set up well for my natural fade. The tee box is on the right side. Since I do not hook or draw; I am forced to align myself to target the left side of the fairway. It is a tough driving hole for me. As I approached the number 6 tee box, a change occurred. Inside the tee box, I proceeded to perform my alignment and set-up routine free from conscious control interference. I executed my drive landing on the left side of the fairway. Pleased and delighted, I proceeded to launch a straight flight wood number 3 close to the green. I was on a roll. On the next hole, I produced a well-executed drive followed by a 9 iron on a line to the pin from the left side of the fairway. Rationale: At that moment on the five par number six hole tee I had instantly (1) transitioned a high mind-body tension into a low mind-body tension state, (2) engaged an efficient subconscious in the zone kinetic energy flow, and (3) mobilized a high-level mind-body performance skill-set. Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable.

My functional golf swing is a comfort. I have the tools to succeed. So, tally ho.

MEMORY VISUALIZATION AID My computer-generated images provide an excellent memory visualization aid that strengthens subconscious flow communication. Indeed, personal experience information is worked and reworked to achieve a perceptual image that looks right and feels right. The result is a subconscious communication image presented in a spatial mathematical form. (1) Image repetition is used to form a stronger memory unit. (2) Memory packets often trigger a complete memory unit recall. (3) Multiple images provide an information resource that adds detail to the memory unit. (4) Image response stimulation is sufficient to construct a proficient memory unit. Computer-generated images provide a means to boost the level of conscious and subconscious descriptive flow communication to create a useful and productive in the zone cohesive unit process that facilitates the execution of swing speed max.

The Elite Player (1) At a young age, I studied elite player golf swing fundamentals. The first-rate actions of the elite player became implicitly implanted in my mind. Not an elite athlete myself, I was frustrated and disheartened. However, I did possess athletic intelligence and the will to play the game. In time, I learned that self-determination through self-imposed innovative lessons produced the feeling of well-being and fulfillment that I seek. (2) My hands and wrists throughout swing action communicate information that is internally processed creating knowledge that is readily activated. At times, I visually monitor the movement of the shaft forward. Guideline: The upward lift of the clubhead following swing ignition positions the clubhead at the top of the backswing to sweep through the impact area on the downswing. (3) The hilly terrain, multilevel greens, and winding creek dominate the 98.6-acre landscape. This excellent par three golf course resides on a former long-standing school site. The site features a historically preserved red 2-story brick building and a white classroom brick building that is now the clubhouse. On a personal note, I worked as a programmer in the final days of the school’s educational history. (4) On the number 11 hole, I joined a single player. I noticed the logo on his golf bag. “Are you a college player?” I asked. “Yes sir,” he said. I observed the power, full extension and smooth rhythm of an elite player. Unaffected, I proceeded to engage my self-determined swing efforts with confidence and harmony. (5) On the 17th hole, I faced a problematic pitch several yards off the elevated green in spongy rough that can snag an iron. I played a runner with my 7-wood out of the rough, up the slope, rolling to within 4 feet of the hole. I holed the putt for a 3. “Nice up and down,” he said, “thank you,” I said.

91

Homeslice (1) Playing with a family member, friend or acquaintance often becomes a struggle to win the prize as opponents. Immersed in home slice competition, I thought better of individual medal stroke play. I proposed best ball. The best ball position is the ball in play. One or the other playing partner places his ball next to the best ball no nearer the hole. The idea was accepted, then, as it is today. We work together as a team to score against par. I like a team player approach. Guideline: I trust the stimulus of competition effectuates a rush of sustained adrenaline, intense focus, and heightened agile awareness that generates a deep state dynamic feeling of competitive vitality and composure. (2) I like this golf course. Rolling fairways are nestled within dense towering hardwoods spawning a feeling of privacy. A winding river adjoins the long five par two hole. Ponds, marshes, and creeks engender a tranquil journey through nature. It is a personal fit. (3) My partner stroked an excellent shot to the right of the pin 15 feet from the three par five hole. I stroked a superb shot over the pin 8 feet from the hole. I was pleased that we hit good shots. My partner was disappointed I had hit the better shot. Individual rivalry overshadows team effort, at least, momentarily.

92

(4) I am in the midst of training myself to be immersed in feel awareness only. Rationale: Indeed, my self-imposed long-running golf developmental process produced a complete golf swing unit. That was step one, now step two: to transition from a cognitive mindset to a spatial awareness mindset. Implementing a feel awareness mindset blueprint was the second step, now, the third step: to sustain a mindset awareness shot after shot. Swing preservation or swing integrity is a fundamental tool. Accordingly, I devised a self-imposed grading system that evaluates my ability to sustain an awareness mindset on the golf course. Level B is a good grade. In the main I fluctuate between a C⁺ and a B⁺. Incidents often trigger an adrenaline flow spike that instantly sharpens concentration and spatial movement coordination. Incident (1) I had caught up with a foursome on the four par number 15 hole. I wanted to continue my round at the next hole. The smiling faces I encountered had other ideas. Immediately, an adrenaline spike increased my grade level from a C⁺ to a B⁺. In response, I drilled a straight drive down the fairway. My B⁺ mindset level continued the rest of the round. Incident (2) A friendly golf course neighbor engaged me in superfluous conversation as I walked up to the number 14 tee box. My spatial awareness mindset concentration leaped from a C⁺ to a B⁺ in a flash. I maintained this level of in the zone mindset the rest of the round.

(5) I had practiced through thick blade grass before noting impact torque accelerated sound, ball strike release visualization, and target sight line perception. Later I established that thick blade wet grass is best. I swing through wet long grass/swoosh/. The sound is similar to the self-made inflected accelerator air pitched sound I create to simulate clubhead acceleration through the impact area. The wet grass/swoosh/sound helps to feel the tempo, timing, and rhythm of the clubhead acceleration through the impact area.

93

Final Fade SUMMER LEAGUE My summer league games are a competitive lifelong timeline fit. Day-to-day games actuate competitive mindset adaptions. Schedules are posted, scores are recorded, and trophies are awarded.

RATIONALE Do I play to win the game or do I play to win the play within the game? To be honest, I trust that one facilitates the other. Anyway, someone will keep score. Do I like team play or do I like individual play? A combination of both, that is, individual play within a team concept. Do I respond to individual competitors or do I respond to the game itself? It does not matter: The boiler inside me heats up once I step on the field of play. The struggle to succeed encountered in human athletic endeavors elicits thought processes embracing performance creating ways to excel competing with artistry and intellect crystallizing into a feeling of well-being and fulfillment.

FLASHBACK “Hey, nice drive,” He said. My superb tee shot drive bounced again and again down the tree line fairway triggering a pleasing retroactive memory response channel-linked to my neighborhood elementary school playground player days. Presently, I stepped forward with my right foot delivering an uppercut swing that powered the softball in the direction of left-center field. I ran to first base visually aware of the ball bouncing in the distance chased by the playground players. Pleased and delighted, I became totally immersed navigating within the framework of the game. “Thank you,” I said.

I have a sense that experience repeats itself. Time maps embodied and embedded in neural network layers intertwine past present and future. Prior experience imagery recall interconnects awareness anticipation scenarios to shape and re-shape complex athletic movements in real-time performance.

94

FIREWALL I am standing on the tee as I view the number 3 hole. The fairway is straight. It does not flow to the green. A straight drive and a straight 3-wood/5-wood places the ball in excellent position for a pitch shot over the creek to the pin. The fairway target is right of the green on my second shot. However, I am aware of the green in peripheral vision. It becomes the second target. The green sighted in my peripheral vision has created a false orientation dual target sight line. As a consequence: (1) Swing path is off-line. (2) Ball flight pattern is misdirected. (3) Swing integrity is impaired. I have developed an internal visual motor imagery /firewall/ to neutralize interfering dual target directionality and false orientation perceptions. I block-out the green as the peripheral target. Consequently, the peripheral target is eliminated or is it. A momentary lapse in concentration sends discordant messages to my spatial awareness subconscious spawning dual target directionality and false orientations. I am standing over a short putt right to left break. However, I am aware of the hole in peripheral vision. It becomes the second target. My left-hand rotates left sending the ball left of the hole. The peripheral target has pulled my attention away from the breaking putt line.

MINDSET My resource tools have served me well. Indeed, I have remediated my sun shadow, sight line, alignment, spasmodic grip, and motor memory glitches. My developmental golf swing is complete. Fixing-on-the-run is a dead issue. I have progressed from dysfunctional to functional. Yes, I have constructed a functional golf swing that yields confidence and harmony on the golf course. My golf swing performance is super senior meritorious. Guideline: Simply stated, a proper blend of fundamentals, anticipation, and execution produces a precise athletic movement that shapes a corresponding level of confidence and harmony on the playing field. Rule changes empower a game-changing mindset. It is a final fit.

95

Guideline: Crossover information flows through a conduit between descriptive language and motor awareness. Interpolative, this conduit provides a gateway buffering the translating and understanding of crisscrossing information. The result is my intellect accommodates both the impression and descriptive interpretations of athletic movements enabling direct neural memory access: the key to flawless execution. Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable. That is the nature of the beast. There is no need to be stressed or upset. My functional golf swing is a comfort. I have the tools to succeed. So, tally ho.

NOTEBOOK My deep breathing pre-shot routine is, now, set in stone. (1) I hold the length of my club with both hands extending the shaft away from my body. (2) I tense my hands, arms, and shoulders. (3) I bend my upper body forward simultaneously breathing in until my upper body reaches a parallel position. (4) I forcefully exhale and relax my hands, arms, and shoulders. This unusual and visible maneuver is both a sound physical therapy practice to stretch my surgically repaired back and an excellent neurophysiological technique to temper inner core tension. If probed I prefer the physical therapy practice explanation.

My re-focused impact zone eye sweep is a significant upgrade. (1) My eyes follow the clubhead as it lifts. (2) Throughout the backswing, my eyes remain focused on the address lifted clubhead /pre-swing/ location. (3) I re-focus my eye sweep upon downswing impact area re-entry. The results are amazing.

96

At address, my right foot is square to the target position. Indeed, my right foot square position at address helped to maintain right leg integrity, ensure proper body coil and prevent extraneous body movement. Unfortunately, a severely strained right leg, slow to heal, disabled my golf swing. I needed to adjust. The adjustment was to flair the right foot. My flared right foot at address helps temper the adverse effects of rotational coil pressure. Although my right leg has healed, I continue to flare my right foot at address.

Long-term analytical conscious processing emboldens a self-conscious mindset that interferes with subconscious immersion action movements. What to do? The automatic subconscious system needs to be in control: However, the conscious mind refuses to stand aside. Flow immersion countermeasures are useful tools.

Yes, I know, I am chasing a motor awareness feel that is both elusive and attainable. It is a paradox. I divided the process into ten distinct /in the zone/ components. Some components are assets. Other components are a work in progress. Also, there are various mind-body cycles and various random on, off, and refresh buttons. It is a puzzle.   

Assets: absorption autotelic anticipation focus immersion Neutral: time Progress: balance control flow tempo

I am relaxed and patient. I am attuned to spontaneous subconscious feel awareness images that trigger a sense of empowerment to enable a performance level immersed in balance, control, flow, and tempo. A procedural blend /•knowledge •experience •confidence •harmony/ subconscious memory process achieves a self-organizing/self-regulating turn-key blueprint that monitors/modulates the mind-body continuum. I trust the natural process to self-actuate.

97

Inner core tension slows swing speed. Do I consciously control tension during the golf swing? No, I do not. Consequently, I accept a ball flight pattern that is a bit short but online. Mindset tension reduction components:       

I affirm. Commonplace levels of personal competitive participation are considered subordinate to the quintessential professional level that is experienced by so few and vicariously viewed by so many. It’s a pity. One’s performance is paramount to one’s well-being. Indeed, one’s mind is an information processing unit that is controlled by a set of physical, social, and cognitive drives that downlinks to an autonomous cognitive deep state neural network system that is empowered to pursue desired outcomes in an open environment. I affirm. Every interactive performance event provides personal interest, meaning and value to one and all in both time and place.

The imagination I possess safeguards the words I write. Engaging one’s imagination to express and embrace one’s mental and physical processes is a blessing. I trust the process implicitly.

GUIDELINES

GOLF GLITCHES

1) As I walk up to the ball, I observe an object in the distance that aligns 90 degrees to the target line. Then, I extend the clubhead at the object with the shaft serving as a right angle to the intended line of flight; next, I set my feet accordingly. I maintain this visualmotor memory image of 90-degree orientation from the address position to the top of the backswing to the downswing release through impact.

2) As a supplemental remedial scheme to my 90-degree alignment rule, I created within myself, an internal visual, motor imagery system to shield myself from external disturbances. In time, I developed an inner sense of feel awareness direction that serves as a /firewall/ shield to neutralize interfering visual disturbances, target directionality, and false orientation perceptions.

3) I use my right hand as an alignment reminder at the address position by spreading my fingers out in front of me down the shaft line with the index finger pointing 90 degrees to the target line. My little finger indicates my natural offset ball flight pattern. I rotate my hand counterclockwise so that the little finger points 90 degrees to the target line. I feel myself rotating slightly to the left.

4) Sedulously seeking relief, I perceptually suppressed neural memory access to my disruptive spasmodic fingers. Furthermore, I enabled a mental discipline idea to induce the cells in my arms and shoulders to swell. Real or imagined, I proceeded to stimulate fluids within each cell to flow outward in all directions generating, within me, a supple, relaxed feel.

109

KINESTHESIS

1) In sequential order, (1) the first step involved the mechanics of the swing component assimilated into the swing package. (2) The second step monitored the physical aspects of the swing component; activated muscles, tendons, and ligaments stretched.

2) I engage a slight timing pause at the top of the upright backswing with a flared flying elbow /set/. On re-entry, the right elbow transitions straight down to my right side pulling the left arm slightly back as my left wrist rotates passively clockwise. The laid-off golf shaft creates an inside the target line downswing /set/ with a square impact /release/as I shift my weight forward down the target line.

3) The elongated down hands and wrists at address respond with a free and fluid motion from the address /set/ throughout the re-entry /set/ that positions the hands and wrists for the optimum re-route /release/ through the impact area down the target line.

4) The perpendicular shaft at address allows the hands to rotate forward following forward press ignition.

5) Advantageous right leg load and release positioning provide needed structure, balance, and stability.

6) The upward lift of the clubhead following swing ignition positions the clubhead at the top of the backswing to sweep through the impact area on the downswing.

7) Before swing ignition, I engage an upward body lift that involves lifting the shoulders up, arching the small of my back, and straightening the legs. Consequently, the clubhead lifts up and out. The weight of the club elongates my arms and wrists downward into an ideal pre-swing position. This pre-swing position /set-up/ facilitates a downswing re-focus impact zone eye sweep.

8) I have adopted a drive distant straight discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight pattern. 9) I have locked myself into a drive distant control discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance. 10) I have embraced a progressive timeline drive distant loss discipline that affirms my true limits of ball flight distance.

11) Approaching the tee box or fairway lie (1), I practice a self-made inflected accelerated air pitched sound and (2); I visualize a free spinning wheel. The sound and the image help me feel the tempo, timing, and rhythm of the clubhead acceleration through the impact area.

12) Swing mechanics lessons can only provide approximations of proper swing form. Consequently, swing mechanics approximations learned need to be adapted to the golf course conditions shaping strategic swing adjustments and producing precise swing alignment.

13) I trust the stimulus of competition delivers a rush of sustained adrenaline, intense focus, and heightened agile awareness that generates within me a feeling of competitive vitality and composure.

SOMESTHESIS

1) Simply stated, a proper blend of fundamentals, anticipation, and execution produces a precise athletic movement that shapes a corresponding level of confidence and harmony.

2) The conscious mind must be disciplined to send useful predetermined descriptive information through the interface that does not interfere with the subconscious level thought processes that are crisscrossing within the common gateway interface. This crisscrossing information from the conscious level and the subconscious level in the interface must be in a pure, disciplined form to avoid confusion, conflict, and ineffectiveness.

3) My athletic intelligence employs a wide angle sweeping visual scan, anticipating movements, triggered or spontaneous, before or during, creating a feel anticipation snapshot: the key to everything athletic.

4) My mind through visual, motor imagery regulates the intended movements by dialing through the various movement processes forming a mental blueprint: the key to engaging swing speed max.

5) Crossover information flows through a conduit between descriptive language and motor awareness. Interpolative, this conduit provides a gateway buffering the translating and understanding of crisscrossing information. The result is my intellect accommodates both the impression and descriptive interpretations of athletic movements enabling direct neural memory access: the key to flawless execution.
