Introduction to the DMACK Tyres Carlisle Stages

W

elcome to the DMACK Carlisle Stages, a brand new event for 2013 running over challenging forest stages in the Kershope and Newcastleton region on Saturday 22 June.

This rally was originally scheduled to be the fifth round of the newly established WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship. But due to the vagaries of the British Winter, the Rally North Wales has had to be cancelled and the Red Kite Rally has had to be postponed until later September after suffering from some of the worst winter conditions for many years. This means therefore that this new rally has been promoted to the third round of the Championship, which has been put together for 2013. The WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship has been constructed by Colin Heppenstall the Roger Albert Clark Rally Manager. Late in 2012 he was approached asked to come up with a new format of championship. Initially due to the pressure of work he declined the offer but following increased requests from many of the regular historic rallying crews from the existing BHRC, he agreed to come up with a format, which would open up the classes of competing vehicles and put the fun back into rallying at a more affordable cost So far this year the events taking part in the championship have seen full entries, something which in recent years has been difficult to achieve for the majority of organisers. Organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club1, the new gravel event will start and finish in Longtown near Carlisle and take in 45 stage miles across eight stages in some of the region’s best-loved forests.

Carlisle based Tyre Company DMACK Tyres is the title sponsor for this new event. DMACK is an independent tyre manufacturer, privately owned and with a business commitment that is totally focused on providing their customers with high quality and exceptional value tyres.

Based in Cumbria, North West England, DMACK is now firmly established as an FIA approved supplier to the World Rally Championship and the motorsport range has already taken victories in Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand and Spain. Alongside supplying tyres for the FIA World Rally Championship, the team at DMACK is keen to support local motor sport and so the inaugural Carlisle Stages is an ideal platform for the Carlisle-based company. One of the company’s founding principles is to deliver affordable motorsport through a range of cost-effective tyres. Speaking ahead of the launch of this new rally, Nicola Heppenstall Clerk of the Course said of the event,

“I am delighted to welcome DMACK as title sponsor for our new event; it is great to have such a prominent local company backing this new rally, which runs on classic stages in Cumbria and the Scottish Borders. I have also decided to make the rally freely available to all spectators, therefore we will not be charging for access to any of the special stages” We would ask that you respect the forests and take home any litter which you may have and that you respect the requests of the rally marshals, thereby making their job so much more enjoyable and take care at all times. Remember above everything else, Motorsport is Dangerous and that you attend at your own risk. We just want to wish you a great day’s sport and that the weather is kind to us.

Affordable Performance

DMACK has been created to give competitors premium brand performance at a budget brand price. The DMACK philosophy is to give every motorsport competitor the opportunity to buy a product that is high quality and delivers top performance at a very competitive price.

Page

6

DMACK tyres are affordable for every level of competitor. They have been designed with performance, puncture resistance and durability in mind and are therefore suited to all levels of motorsport from club rallying to world rallying.

Welcome from Dick Cormack Managing Director DMACK Tyres

A

s managing director of DMACK, I would like to welcome you to this inaugural DMACK Carlisle Stages, organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club.

DMACK is one of just two authorised suppliers to the FIA World Rally Championship and has grown rapidly as a global motorsport brand. But our roots are firmly fixed in Carlisle where the company was born and currently operates from. The strategy behind DMACK is to manufacturer and supply high performance motorsport tyres at an affordable price – making them accessible to all levels of competitor. This principle of quality at an affordable price is one of the main ingredients of this rally and the newly established West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship. It is for this reason that I have decided to give my backing to the organising team for 2013. As well as the WRC campaign, DMACK is heavily involved in all forms of grass roots motorsport. We supported Mark Higgins on the Roger Albert Clark Rally back in 2005 when he won the event. However, the company has grown extensively since then and we now offer a full range of car, truck and industrial tyres. I am excited to be lending support to this new rally and I hope to be there on the day as long as my other commitments allow, so I hope to meet many of you, the spectators who keep this sport alive. All that remains is for me to say that I hope everyone stays safe and all the participating crews make it back to the finish relatively unscathed. Have a great days rallying.

The DMACK Carlisle Stages Rally will be based at R J Murray & Sons Haulage Company in Longtown, Carlisle: just five minutes from junction 44 of the M6. The facility is the Northern Hub of Pall-Ex, established in March 2012, allowing the palletised freight network to provide an increased service offering for its members and customers.

Page

8

The 40,000 sq ft facility is based on a 30-acre site and allows Pall-Ex to offer a full service logistic solution across northern England and Scotland.

Steve Murray – Director R. J. Murray & Sons Ltd

W

hen I was asked to help with this new rally I was only too pleased to say yes.

My Father Robin Murray is well known in the area for his exploits in rallying during the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. He still has an early Mini Cooper and an Austin Healey 3000, both of which he uses regularly. So I was delighted to renew this family link with the sport. Our premises at Longtown are the Northern Hub of Pall-Ex, set up by Dragons Den’s Hilary Devey. The 40,000 sq. ft. facility is based on a 30-acre site and will allow the organisers to have a first class start finish and service venue. It is great that the organisers have chosen to be involved with local business, which can only be of benefit to all involved and I am happy to be able to help grassroots motorsport in the Carlisle area. I am looking forward to being here on the day and watching the cars leave the start ramp and come back safe to the finish. I would like to say that I hope that everyone has a great day and want to thank you for supporting everyone involved.

Nicola Heppenstall – Clerk of the Course

W

elcome to this the inaugural DMACK Tyres Carlisle Stages Rally 2013. This brand new event comes to you from the organising team behind the Roger Albert Clark Rally.

I am so pleased to be welcoming Local tyre company DMACK Tyres as our principal sponsor for this rally. They are a high profile local employer with many years expertise in the design and supply of motorsport tyres and I believe that they we can all benefit from this association. The DMACK Carlisle Stages has been designed to be a great days sport in some classic forests with a very compact route based around and a first class rally HQ in Longtown. As the Clerk of the Course for this rally I am indebted to the owners of R.J. Murray & Son in Longtown, for the use of their premises for a couple of days. This allows us to have a superb start and finish venue and central service area within a short distance of all the competitive mileage. This reduces the cost for everyone involved. As well as catering for contenders in the WWRS R.A.C Rally Championship, the DMACK Carlisle Stages will be open to all other cars and is ideal preparation for anyone planning to enter the Roger Albert Clark Rally 2013, which runs across similar forest stages. The route will take in six stages in some of the region’s best-loved forests. Since the original draft of this spectator guide the Special Stage at Chamot Hill has had to be withdrawn due to unforeseen circumstances. However no overall mileage has been lost as the Chamot Hill distance has been added to SS3&6 Kershope so the overall stage mileage remains as was originally planned. The action starts with a four-mile stage in Arthur’s Seat followed by seven miles in Newcastleton and a stage of ten miles in Kershope. After service back at Longtown, the three stages will be repeated. Arthur’s Seat has not been used for around five years. Before I close I want to pass on my thanks for all the help which I have received from all sponsors, business partners, supporters and everyone who have made this rally possible at such short notice.

11

To you, our spectators, I want you all to have a fantastic time watching, I am sure that we will all witness a great day’s sport.
