A FAMILY-FEEL SCHOOL WITH THE FREEDOM TO GROW With easy access to London and its airports, Roedean Moira House is in an ideal location and enjoys a magnificent setting in the seaside town of Eastbourne. We offer short stay courses to international students throughout the academic year. Most girls will stay for one to three terms, although it is possible to arrange a shorter programme, a minimum of two weeks. Roedean Moira House is a school that has been rooted in the local community and landscape of Eastbourne since 1888 (established 1875), providing a foundation and a richness of opportunity for girls to develop their confidence. Girls with all interests and abilities from our local and internationally-diverse community thrive as a result of an all-round education model in which we believe that, with effort and motivation, anything is possible. As part of the Roedean Moira House family, girls from Nursery to Year 13 experience small class sizes, a nurturing approach, and teaching that gives detailed and tailored support. Being surrounded by female role models results in learning without compromise, whilst allowing girls to be themselves. ‘I am proud to have grown up in Eastbourne and have extensive experience in Teaching and Leadership within schools both locally and abroad. I am passionate about and understand the importance of giving girls access to an excellent education, a wealth of opportunities and confidence, and all within an affordable fee structure. Roedean Moira House is an all-round school for all-round girls; a characteristic I am familiar with, being both sporty and a scientist. At the end of their short stay experience, girls will leave us having greatly improved their English whilst also having enjoyed a wealth of challenging and exciting opportunities both in and out of the classroom.’ Andrew Wood, Headmaster 3

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BRITISH CURRICULUM The short stay programme for international students aims to: • • • •

Improve spoken and written English language Offer an introduction to the British curriculum Develop independence and resilience Build social and cultural awareness

Girls follow a programme tailored to their individual needs. They learn alongside British students, and are placed in a small class appropriate to their age group and level of English. Students will practise English during lessons, at meal times with classmates and boarders and in the boarding house during the evenings and weekends. English is always the lanugage used in public or common spaces, so that everyone can be included in conversations and develop their language skills. Upon arrival, girls are assessed to see whether they will require extra EAL tuition which is provided on a small group basis. Girls will also experience a range of learning styles across different curriculum areas. Girls joining us have the opportunity to enjoy cultural trips and outings, take part in sporting activities and learn new skills in the wide and varied extra-curricular programme. There is seldom time to feel homesick and at the end of their course, our short stay girls are sad to say goodbye and many of them make plans to return to Roedean Moira House to continue their education as full time boarders.

BOARDING

THE LOCAL GIRLS’ SCHOOL WITH AN INTERNATIONAL EDGE Short stay boarders board alongside Roedean Moira House mainstream curriculum students and are usually placed in shared rooms. Currently around 30% of girls at Roedean Moira House are Boarders, with Years 7 to 13 all accommodated in the beautifully refurbished rooms of Boston House. Girls of all nationalities are fully integrated in the boarding house and within the community as a whole and most of their evenings and weekends will be spent in communal areas or out enjoying activities. WHAT THE STAFF SAY...

‘Boston House Boarding has recently been renovated to an extremely high standard, with most rooms looking out towards the sea and the grass tennis courts just over the road, where the professionals come to practice during the AEGON Tennis Tournament. The Boarding staff alongside the girls themselves all help to create a positive and enthusiastic community, particularly in the buzzing Common Room every evening. A full and varied Weekend Programme on Friday evening, Saturdays and Sundays caters to the interest of every girl, with trips to museums and theatres in London, sporting activities such as ice-skating, canoeing and Urban Jump, and of course several shopping trips and visits to the beach!’ Elodie Vallantine, Head of School

WHAT THE BOARDERS SAY...

‘When my parents told me that I would be coming to Roedean Moira House I was a little afraid, as I was coming alone to a country that I didn’t know... but it has simply been incredible. I really like being a boarder here; the boarding staff are the best. They are super friendly and kind and they take care of you as if they were your parents. It took me a little while to settle into my classes, but my new friends made it much easier. The girls in Year 9 are really great and have made sure to look out for me and check that I am okay. I have a lot of friends, which makes the weekends super fun! The best activities that I took part in were Aqua Challenge and Urban Jump. I have absolutely loved being and living here for the year – I am never going to forget this experience.’ Claudia, Short Stay student from Spain 5

OPPORTUNITIES

WHAT THE PUPILS SAY...

‘One of my favourite activities so far was Urban Jump; I had great fun with my friends, but I also enjoy Bluewater Shopping Centre and the Aqua Challenge. I like PE, but I’m really starting to love Swimming. Before I came to Roedean Moira House, I didn’t really like any Sports. The extra-curricular activities that I take part in are Tennis, Archery, Trampoline and Fun Swim. Ines, Short Stay student from Spain
