INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUITION Our Pre-GCSE and Pre-A Level Programmes offer an intensive English Language programme, with a focus on speaking, comprehension and understanding, writing, and grammar, with the Pre-A Level Programme leading to an English as a Second Language GCSE. Pupils spend 30 hours per week on their studies, and 10 hours are dedicated to EAL classes. Upon completion of the course, girls will have raised their written and spoken English to a suitable level that allows them to transfer seamlessly to their GCSE or A Level courses, ensuring that language is no longer a barrier to their learning.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BRITISH CURRICULUM Alongside English language tuition, the subjects on offer within the Roedean International Programmes are an effective introduction to the British curriculum, ensuring that girls are prepared to transition to the mainstream GCSE and A Level courses in a British school. Roedean International Pre-GCSE programme: The Pre-GCSE programme offers an academic foundation course in 4 curriculum subjects, Science, Mathematics, History & Geography, and Art, to ensure access to these subjects within the British curriculum. Roedean International Pre-A Level programme: This is an individually tailored programme and includes the study of up to 6 IGCSE subjects. There are 4 core examined GCSE subjects and a choice of three examined and/or non-examined subjects, designed to give students the background knowledge in preparation for A Level study.

TEACHING

‘I have been teaching the Pre-A Level course for 6 years now, and this last year was my first year teaching younger girls the Pre GCSE course. The Roedean International programme originated at Roedean, and we are delighted to have moved it across to Roedean’s sister school, Roedean Eastbourne. The smaller class sizes have allowed us to really focus on each girl’s individual needs and we are fortunate to be able to tailor each girl’s experience to prepare her for the subjects she wants to carry through into GCSE or A Levels. There are several factors of School life here that help our Roedean International girls to fully integrate into the community, such as the wealth of activities on offer and the weekend and evening programme (such as trips to London, ice-skating, shopping, theatre-trips and more) which are open to all girls, allowing plenty of opportunities for the girls to mix and practise their English.’ Karen Smillie, Head of International Programmes

PROFESSIONAL AND EXPERIENCED TEACHERS All 10 hours of English language tuition are provided by Mrs Smillie, formerly of Roedean Brighton, and mainstream lessons are taught by our first-class subject specialists. Teaching and learning at Roedean Eastbourne, under the Executive Headship of Oliver Blond and new Headmaster Andrew Wood, is effective and detailed, with a tailored approach. Two brand-new Science Labs complement a new and inspiring Science Department, with a range of subject options on offer such as A Level Photography, Psychology and Business taught by outstanding teachers.

OPPORTUNITIES

WHAT THE PUPILS SAY...

‘There are many fun places in our school. For example, the Sports Hall, the classrooms, Top Lawn for football and the Science Labs, but my favourite place is the school’s library, which is big and bright. After class, you can go inside and pick out one of your favourite books to read. We have lots of activities at weekends, such as ice-skating, shopping and cycling.’ Cici, Pre-A

RICHNESS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR GIRLS TO EXCEL Recent significant investment into our facilities have included two brand new Science Labs, refurbished Boarding at Boston House, and investment into many of our learning spaces to ensure an inspiring environment within which to learn and excel. A breadth of co-curricular choices at Roedean Eastbourne allow the girls to excel and grow in confidence within a variety of fields. In Sport, the girls can take part in team games, such as basketball and volleyball, or individual sports, such as badminton, table tennis, and martial arts. The girls can take private lessons on a wide variety of musical instruments, different styles of dance, and public speaking; these may lead to qualifications through ABRSM, RAD, and LAMDA. As part of Roedean International Programmes, girls will be immersed in British culture by taking part in a range of cultural trips and activities. There is a programme of cultural visits to famous UK sights, including visits to Oxford Street and the West End Theatre. In addition, there will be visits organised to top UK universities, such as Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, and the LSE, designed to motivate students to work hard to fulfil their full potential and perhaps one day study at a high-ranking UK university. BOARDING

THE LOCAL GIRLS’ SCHOOL WITH AN INTERNATIONAL EDGE Roedean International girls board alongside Roedean Eastbourne mainstream curriculum students. Currently around 30% of girls at Roedean Eastbourne are Boarders, with Years 7 to 13 and Roedean International all accommodated in the beautifully refurbished rooms of Boston House. Girls of all nationalities are fully integrated in the boarding house and within the community as a whole. WHAT THE STAFF SAY...

‘Boston House Boarding has recently been renovated to an extremely high standard, with most rooms looking out towards the sea and the grass tennis courts just over the road, where the professionals come to practice during the AEGON Tennis Tournament. The Boarding staff alongside the girls themselves all help to create a positive and enthusiastic community, particularly in the buzzing Common Room every evening. A full and varied Weekend Programme on Friday evening, Saturdays and Sundays caters to the interest of every girl, with trips to museums and theatres in London, sporting activities such as ice-skating, canoeing and Urban Jump, and of course several shopping trips and visits to the beach!’ Head of Boarding WHAT THE PUPILS SAY...

‘I am Elsie, from Shanghai. I came to this school in September to study at the Pre-A Level Programme at Roedean International. Due to the delay of the plane, when I first arrived at the school, it was already 9 o’clock in the evening, but two school sisters helped me with my luggage, took me to the boarding house and helped me feel welcome. I like my roommate and room very much and the safe atmosphere of the boarding house. On weekends, we attend school activities for boarders, go shopping in the surrounding cities, or visit the local sites. The school restaurant offers us a lot of different foods every day, and lunches and dinners are also available on weekends. I really like the desserts.’ Elsie, Pre-A 7

‘I have been at Roedean International for 3 months. The boarding house where I live is very comfortable and feels like home. The boarding staff and teachers are friendly and approachable; if you are feeling homesick or have any issues or concerns, they will help you to find a solution quickly. The common room where everyone gathers is always decorated when we have events or parties. There are lots of boarding activities at the weekends; I am looking forward to going skating next term. I was worried about the food options before I came to the UK, but mealtime is one of my favourite parts of the day – thanks to the chefs, we alway have a balanced meal. At Roedean Eastbourne, we are surrounded by nurturing teachers and friendly classmates who ensure that my days here are very fulfilling.
