MESSAGE FROM EDITOR’S DESK

This issue comprises of activities of the clubs, spotlight on members as well as some insightful articles from our members. We’ve had some enthusiatic members join us and you will get to know more about them. This edition’s member spotlight is on our VP

Rodney Araujo VP - Public Relations It is an absolute honour and a great privilege to launch the first edition of the newsletter of Burj Toastmasters for the term 2015-16. Burj Toastmasters has come a long way since the club launched in 2004 and through up & downs has managed to be stand tall, just like our name suggests. It is a matter of great pride for us that this year the Area Director & Division Director originate from our club. We have also achieved the President’s Distinguished Club status for the last term, and the endevour is to keep up to the same high standards that have been set by previous leaders. When we started planning the newsletter, we thought of various names & threw it open to the members to suggest names. However, in the end we decided to keep the old legacy and stick to the old name Bottom Line.

Needless to say, there would not have been a newsletter without the content provide by our members. Hope you all enjoy reading the newsletter as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Looking ahead, we are confident that this year shall also be one of the most memorable years. This confidence is gathered by our ever growing member strength and quality the club has attained. The core to our

Jyothika Shetty President (2015-16) Dear Toastmasters, Burj Toastmasters is in its 12th year of successful Toastmastering and it gives me immense pleasure to convey my message for the first edition of the “comeback” newsletter of the club. Yes, the first newsletter of the club was released way back in 2005 and thanks to our dynamic VP Public Relations, TM Rodney Araujo, who took up the challenge to revive old traditions. This is just the beginning as the club is discovering lot of talents, opportunities and recognition. Last year was very successful for the club as we attained the President Distinguished status and this is a testimony to the hard work and efforts of the members, mentors and the executive committee. This also reinstates the confidence that the club has done all things right by upholding the spirit of its alma mater. Our members have performed well in their education goal and have learnt a lot in terms of relationship building together with leadership and public speaking skills.

success is attributed to the 3 T’s i.e., Teamwork, Time management and Trust. I believe when these three aspects are well integrated we can achieve our goals right on time. In a leadership role, the first step to being a leader is understanding what our members want and not what a leader thinks they need. This means reaching out to the members and gaining feedback and this is the reason we have strengthened our membership and guest feedback policy. Our contributions or achievements will be recognized only if we function as a team to benefit our members. As we are often reminded, there is no “I” in “TEAM.” Finally, deliver your responsibilities with utmost dedication and commitment no matter what the outcome. Do your best and enjoy the journey! Be proud, but be humble. In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity

to

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MENTOR Burj Toastmasters until mid of 2012, when then President Cyril Sukare pulled me in and within a month he relocated to Cananda. Velu Arumugam Club Mentor First of all I would like to thank & convey my admiration to our VP Public Relations, TM Rodney Araujo for bringing this newsletter. Members may come and members may go, but the club must move on, which solely depends on its leadership and the Excom. Burj Toastmasters’ current president, TM Jyothika Shetty is a fantastic leader emerged out of the club with her continuous involvement in Excom for last 3 years. Stay strong, stay committed, ever striving for excellence, do good for others, etc are few of such many qualities she is born with. So she stands out to be an exceptionally fabulous, brilliant and dynamic leader. Being in Toastmasters fraternity for 11 years & for 4 years with Burj Toastmasters, one learning out of many that I would like to convey to every reader, is that if everything is good, everything is fabulous, everything is excellent, then there we have nothing to do and so the real we that’s inside us may still stay dormant. In true sense we learn nothing but become mere copy paste of others. I strongly believe in doing than preaching and thus Burj Toastmasters had become my greatest play school of learning, where I had discovered most important skills and learned few great values of leadership which I otherwise would never had have learned. So don’t look for great place, don’t look for great people, don’t look for great things. Instead make your place great where you are, you become the great person that you expect others to be and keep striving for excellence continuously that will make everything great that you do. Being a member of Dubai Toastmaster since 2005, I had never visited

importantly stop changing people, rather allow them to evolve to become better. If we look back the history of Burj Toastmasters, it has come a long way since chartering the club in 2004. I have seen the club go through ups & downs to a point where even the club was almost about to close down. Today I am really very proud to see that the club has risen so high as its name in terms of quality meetings and membership in this region. Burj Toastmasters has created many champion speakers and kept consistently producing many leaders, who went on to take up higher positions in the Area & Division level which is an exceptional feature of Burj Toastmasters. I for sure otherwise would not have had become Area Governor. With a healthy membership of vibrant & active members, led by a dynamic President TM Jyothika Shetty and her team of committed club officers working truly as servant leaders, the club is a testament of the dedication that is required for any organization to stay strong, dynamic and vibrant. History is created only by those who had will to accomplish and went on identifying opportunities that satisfies their soul. But in Toastmasters opportunity is provided for every member the moment they become part of Toastmasters fraternity. I appeal to every Toastmaster who reads this article to just pause for a while and reflect, how beautiful this world will be…. If every one of us get grounded on the core values of Toastmasters International, RISE and practice them… That’s the essence, the nectar of life not just talking and preaching about it. If anyone has any comment, please feel free to drop a mail to velu@vatmc.com

How have you grown as a communicator & leader after joining Toastmasters? Of course, I have gained tremendous insight and benefitted from the Communication and Leadership track that Toastmasters has to offer. I joined to enhance my Communication skills, but soon realized that Toastmasters has much more to offer. For me, learning is a continuous process and I endeavour to learn as much as I can from anyone and everyone. What do you Toastmasters?

There are so many takeaways from each meeting and I believe it entirely depends on you as an individual as to much you want to learn and grow as an effective communicator and leader. I am proud to be a part to this club. What advice would you give to friends & family regarding Toastmasters Initially, I thought that Toastmasters was for a certain category of people and it wasn’t long after till I realized that it wasn’t.
