For the 5th consecutive season, ROCK NIGHTS will be held at the legendary Pikes Hotel, and 2018 sees the party celebrate its 13 th anniversary. This year ROCK NIGHTS will take place each Wednesday from the 13th June to 19th September.

La imagen de esta nueva campaña la hemos dedicado a las míticas portadas manteniendo la sensualidad de los 60 y la estética de los 70 y 80. Tendremos el Pinball original de Playboy! Tv antiguas con el Playboy channel, un altar dedicado a Hugh Hefner o una ruleta donde los invitados podrán obtener fichas con premios entregados por las Rock Nights Girls que para este verano se convierten en conejitas Playboy.

ROCK NIGHTS presents its tribute to the PLAYBOY MANSION in PIKES. This season, Rock Nights is inspired by the mythical Playboy Mansion parties. After the death of founder Hugh Hefner last September, we wanted to pay tribute to the Playboy universe, and what better place than Pikes Hotel, where Tony Pike is the authentic playboy. The image for this new campaign will be based on the magazine’s classic front covers, maintaining the sensuality of the 60s and the aesthetic of the 70s and 80s. There will be plenty of different areas to keep one entertained, including a original and fully functional Playboy pinball machine! There are also antique TVs showing the Playboy channel, an altar dedicated to Hugh Hefner and a roulette where the winners receive prizes from the Rock Nights Girls, who this year will be dressed as Playboy Bunnies.

Bienvenidos a la tercera edición de Rock Nights The News! Como amantes del papel mantenemos este formato inspirado en el clásico Melody Maker como principal canal de comunicación de las cosas que hacemos y que nos apasionan.

Welcome to the third edition of Rock Nights The News! As we like all things old school we have decided to maintain this format, inspired on the classic Melody Maker magazine, in order to communicate the latest goings-on at Rock Nights, and as well as s*** we like.

Al igual que en los números anteriores seguro que podrás encontrar alguna frase mal pronunciada o fotos en baja resolución pero nosotros damos más importancia al contenido que a la forma de expresarlo, al igual que preferimos una buena canción antes que una buena mezcla. Actitud rock and roll y punto.

Just as in previous editions, we’re sure there will be grammatical errors and low-res photos, but that’s just the way we like it, we think content is more important than the way tings are expressed, like a memorable song is way better than a great mix. Rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

Seguimos luchando con mucha ilusión para ofrecer a la isla una propuesta en la que suenen guitarras y que vaya totalmente a contracorriente en cuanto a sonidos y forma de entender la fiesta.

A Rock Nights solo se puede acceder mediante lista de invitados, no hay zonas VIP y no importa quien seas, simplemente queremos que la gente disfrute, se desabroche la camisa y alce el puño gritando “We Can Be Heroes”.

We’ll keep fighting to give the island a musical alternative and a place where guitars sound, even though this is complete against the grain on the island. It’s just our way of understanding the party. The only way to get into Rock Nights is on the guest list, there aren’t any VIP areas and it doesn’t matter who you are, we just want people to have a good time. Unbutton that shirt and put your fist in the air while shouting “We Can Be Heroes”.

Este año empezarán a las 21:00 en la zona de piscina de PIKES con una ambiente con estética Palm Springs setentero como el que se vivía en la zona de piscina de la mansión Playboy y en la que se podrá disfrutar de un ambiente fresco y veraniego, amenizado por sesiones ideales para un cocktail a primera hora. Habrá un menú para cenar y cargar pilas antes de empezar la noche.

ROCK NIGHTS será el after show oficial de los conciertos acústicos de Dorado Live Shows que se celebrarán cada dos semanas desde el día de la apertura y donde actuarán Iván Ferreiro, Dorian, Sidonie, Los Planetas, Arizona Baby, The Parrots, Russian Red y un invitado especial.

There will be a dinner menu available for those wanting to charge their batteries before the rock ‘n’ rolling commences.

ROCK NIGHTS will be the official after-show of the Dorado Live Shows acoustic concerts that will be held every two weeks from the 13 th June with: Iván Ferreiro, Dorian, Sidonie, Los Planetas, Arizona Baby, The Parrots, Russian Red and special guest.

50 YEARS BEING MUSIC ADDICT 50 años adicto a la música Interview by: Yuma Keith Sroka Angulo

Dieter Sroka es un publicista, diseñador gráfico y editor de la IbizArt Guide. Nacido en el pueblo de Hamelín (Alemania) en el 1957, tiene claro que sus dos grandes pasiones son el arte y la música. A lo largo de su vida, ha recorrido todo el mundo para ver a los mejores músicos y cuenta con una colección de más de 4.000 discos. Ahora, y desde hace 28 años, vive en Ibiza junto a su mujer y sus dos hijos, también amantes de la buena música.

1. Buenas tardes Dieter. Cuéntanos, ¿desde hace cuántos años llevas metido en el mundo de la música?

Bueno, ahora tengo 61 y empecé comprando mis primeros discos con 11 años, así que unos 50 años. Bastante tiempo y bastante dinero gastado en este ¡vicio! (risas).

2. ¿Recuerdas el primer disco que tuviste en tus manos?

Sí, creo que fue de The Equals - Viva Bobby Joe. Pero en las mismas semanas me compré varios más, como Bee Gees, The Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, The Kinks...hay bastantes. ¡Aquí empezó el vicio!

España tiene una buena historia en cuanto a música. Y he llegado a conocer aquí a muchos coleccionistas locos como yo, ¡sobretodo por los Rolling Stones! (risas) 4. Tienes vinilos, CD’s, LP’s, singles y DVD’s de prácticamente todos los grupos desde los años 60 hasta la actualidad. Algunos son auténticas joyas, ¿cuáles son tus preferidos?

Es una pregunta un poco difícil, ya que a mí me gustan todos los estilos que sean buena música, desde pop-rock de los años 60 hasta los americanos de los 70, todas las variaciones de rock, blues, soul, rythem & blues, jazz, singer song writer. Mi espectrum es muy grande...Lo que no me gusta es el rap.

3. Tú eres alemán, aunque ya llevas casi 30 años viviendo en España, ¿En qué país dirías que hay más interés por la musica y cómo crees que ha evolucionado estos años?

5. Y hablando más en concreto, ¿cuál es tu ránking del 10 al 1 de grupos preferidos?

Antes pensaba que Alemania, al tener el doble de habitantes que España y al haber muchos coleccionistas y bastantes conciertos, pero luego he visto que en España el mercado es bastante amplio teniendo también Latino América y muchos aficionados. Por lo que diría que ahora mismo España está igual o casi más que Alemania en cuanto a música. Además en España los grupos nacionales superan con creces a los alemanes. Por eso creo que

6. Los 10 mejores álbumes que te llevarías a una isla desierta son...?

Como solo pueden ser 10, seré listo y cogeré un montón de dobles, ¡para que así tenga casi 20!

La mayoría serían conciertos.

8. Creciste en la edad dorada de la música, por lo que tendrás mil anécdotas para contar. ¿Cuál es la que más cariño le tienes?.

Tengo varias de conciertos, pero me quedo en especial con una, que fue una Jack Daniels Backstage Party con Bon Jovi. Yo tuve mi agencia de publicidad en Hanóver y trabajé con Polygram y celebramos la fabricación del millón de CD’s. Y en los años 80 cuando muchos grupos iban a Hanóver para ellos era algo bonito visitar la fábrica donde se hacían las copias. Yo tenía una amiga que trabajaba en márqueting en la empresa y me invitó a un concierto esa misma noche de Bon Jovi en Hanóver, a ella no le gustaba mucho la música rock así que acepté sin dudarlo. Eran entradas con acceso al backstage y la fiesta de Jack Daniels, y he de decir que eso fue de verdad una auténtica fiesta de Rock and Roll, duró hasta el mediodía del día siguiente (risas). En aquel entonces Bon Jovi no era tan conocido como ahora. De los Rolling Stones también podría contar alguna que otra cosa!

7. ¿Y qué grupos no quieres ni regalado en tu colección?

Todos los que tienen en su lírica textos fascistas y racistas, como son en Alemania Die Böhse Onkelz. En Inglaterra existen por ejemplo Morrissey...Todo eso no lo quiero cerca, tampoco el rap ni el reggaetón, en los que denigran sexualmente a las mujeres. Aparte, tampoco tengo casi música heavy metal y sus derivados, no me va ese rollo.

9. Aparte, ¿coleccionas también otros objetos relacionados con la música?

Sí, sobre todo de los Rolling Stones tengo muchos fanzine, discos firmados por Bill Wyman y el resto de miembros, discos de oro como de David Bowie, John Lennon...ediciones limitadas, discos de promoción, discos pirata... algunos tienen un valor de más de 1.000€, un montón de revistas de música, libros, camisetas firmadas, guitarras firmadas...en general mucho merchandising, y es que esto es a día de hoy el negocio de muchos grupos. ¡Lo bueno es que no tengo más espacio en casa y así no tengo que gastar mucho más dinero! (risas).

muchos que son gimmix covers, que son muy especiales. Me gustaría recalcar el gran trabajo de los diseñadores gráficos que antiguamente creaban portadas increíbles, para mí es verdadero arte. Si todo sale bien, el año que viene podríamos continuar con esto. Además, el mismo día de la exposición pincharé unos temas rockeros, varios no tan conocidos, pero bastante buenos.

Born in Hamelin (Germany), in 1957, for him it’s clear that his two big passions are art and music. Throughout his life, he has travelled all around the world to meet the best musicians and has a collection of over 4.000 music discs. Currently, for the last 28 years, he lives in Ibiza with his wife and their two sons, also lovers of good music.

1. Good afternoon, Dieter. Tell us, how many years have you been in the music world?

Well, now I’m 61 and I began buying my first records when I was 11, so that’s 50 years now.

Quite a long time and much money being spent on this vice! (laughs).

2. Do you remember the first record you had?

Yes, I think it was one of The Equals - Viva Bobby Joe. But that same week I bought some other records, such as Bee Gees, The Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, The Kinks… many records. The vice began there!

3. You are German, though you’ve been almost 30 years living in Spain, where would you say there is more interest in music and how do you think this has evolved throughout these years?

Before I though it was Germany, because it has double the amount of citizens than Spain, and there are many collectors and quite a number of concerts, but then I’ve realized that in Spain the market is quite extensive, also considering Latin America and many fans.+ So I would say that right now Spain is equal or even beyond Germany in terms of music. Moreover, in Spain the national bands far exceed the German ones.

Thus I believe that Spain has a good history regarding music. And here I’ve even met many crazy collectors as me, above all fans of Rolling Stones! (laughs).

4. You have vinyl records, CD’s, albums, singles and DVDs by almost all the bands since the 60s to present. Some of them are true gems, which are your favourite ones?

This is somehow a difficult question, because I like all styles of good music, from pop-rock of the 60s to the American styles of the 70s, all variations of rock, blues, soul, rythm & blues, jazz, singer song writer. My spectrum is very big... What I don’t like is rap.

5. And speaking more specifically, which would be your ranking of favourite bands from 10 to 1?

Only ten? (laughs).

6. The 10 best records you would take to a desert island are…?

As they’re only 10, I’ll be clever and I’ll choose a lot of double records, so I’ll have almost 20! Most of them would be concerts.

7. And which bands wouldn’t you have even if they were a gift in your collection?

All the ones that have fascist and racist lyrics, as Die Böhse Onkelz in Germany. In United Kingdom for instance there is Morrissey… I don’t want all that close to me, neither rap nor reggaeton, which denigrate women in sexual terms. Besides, I barely have heavy metal and its variations; it’s not my kind of thing.

8. You grew up in the music golden era, so you’ll have thousands of anecdotes to tell.

Which is the one you’re especially fond of?

I have several anecdotes about concerts, but I’m especially fond of one at a Jack Daniels Backstage Party with Bon Jovi. I had my advertising agency in Hannover and worked with Polygram, and we celebrated the production of one million CDs. In the 80s when a lot of bands went to Hannover it was nice for them to visit the factory where copies were made. I had a friend who worked at the marketing department of the company and she invited me to a concert the night that Bon Jovi was in Hannover. She Rock and Roll party, which lasted till next day’s

didn’t like rock music very much so I accepted without hesitation. Those were tickets that allowed access to the backstage and the Jack Daniels party, and I have to say that was indeed a real Rock and Roll party, which lasted till next day’s noon (laughs). In those days Bon Jovi was not so famous as now. About Rolling Stones I would also be able to tell a few things!

9. Besides, do you also collect other objects related to music?

Yes, especially about Rolling Stones, I have many fanzines, records signed by Bill Wyman and the rest, golden discs such as by David Bowie, John Lennon… limited editions, promotion records, pirated records… some of them are worth more than 1.000€, a lot of music magazines, books, signed t-shirts, signed guitars… in general, a lot or merchandising things, because nowadays this is the business for many bands. Luckily I don’t have more room at home so I don’t have to spend much more money! (laughs).

10. I’ve been told that this summer you’ll do some exhibition at the Dorado Ibiza. Tell us something about this.

Yes, Diego Calvo offered me this chance and I liked the idea to exhibit mostly especial vinyl

records of my collection, so we’ll prepare a small selection of the coolest covers. I have many of them that are gimmix covers, and those are very special. I’d like to highlight the great work done by the graphic designers who in the past created incredible covers. For me that’s true art. If all goes well, next year we could go on with this.

Also, the same day of the exhibition I’ll deejay some rock songs, some of them not very wellknown but quite good.

HEY, ROCKSTAR, WATCH THE BIRDIE! HEY, ROCK STAR, MIRA AL PAJARITO! (Entrevista a Juan Fajardo)

Don Diego Calvo, Sheriff de esta santa revista e hijo del rock and roll, me preguntó hace un par de semanas si me apetecía escribir un artículo sobre Juan Pérez Fajardo. Rápidamente le respondí que sí, que Fajardo me parecía un personaje súper interesante y que estaba deseando llegar a mi casa y ponerme a ello. Pero mis palabras no debieron sonar muy convincentes, ya que nada más terminar de decirlas, Diego me miró fijamente a los ojos con sus Ray-Ban Wayfarer Classic del 52 y me dijo: “Di la verdad, no tienes ni puta idea de quién te estoy hablando”. Yo empecé a hacerme pequeño cual filete de pollo barato en la sartén y no tuve más remedio que reconocer mi ignorancia.

Pues resulta que el tal Fajardo ese, está considerado como uno de los fotógrafos musicales más importantes de nuestro país. En sus más de nosecuantos años detrás de la cámara ha disparado contra prácticamente todo bicho viviente del mundo del rock and roll mundial y sus trabajos son habituales en las páginas de Rolling Stone, Mondo Sonoro, Rockdeluxe, Esquire, El País… También es fotógrafo oficial de Gibson España y un montón de cosas molonguis más.

Y yo me pregunto (y sé que tú también lo estás haciendo): ¿Cómo es posible que un tío que se las da de melómano y moderno como yo, no conozca a un señor tan guay como este? Pues muy sencillo, porque el curro de fotógrafo musical es un trabajo más en la sombra que el de paje de los reyes magos.

Pero esto se va a acabar, porque le he pedido al propio Juan Pérez Fajardo que seleccione tres fotos suyas que quiera sacar del anonimato y que a modo de firma nos cuente esa pequeña historia/anécdota/LoQueSea que hay detrás de cada una de ellas.

Mr. Diego Calvo, Sheriff of this blessed magazine and son of Rock and Roll, asked me a couple of weeks ago if I felt like writing an article on Juan Pérez Fajardo. Quickly I told him that I did, that Fajardo seemed to me a very interesting character and that I was looking forward to getting home and start writing. But apparently my words didn’t sound very convincing, because right after speaking Diego looked straight in my eyes through his Ray-Ban Wayfarer Classic of 1952 and told me: “Tell me the truth, you have no fucking idea whom I’m talking about”. I started to decrease as if I was a cheap chicken steak on a frying pan, and I had no choice but to admit my ignorance.

Well, this Fajardo I mention is considered to be one of the most relevant music photographs in Spain. Through his more than I-don’t-know-how-many years behind the camera he has shot almost every living soul at the Rock and Roll world and his works are usually present on the pages of Rolling Stone, Mondo Sonoro, Rockdeluxe, Esquire, El País… Also, he’s the official photographer of Gibson Spain and a lot of many other cool things.

Juan Pérez Fajardo: Epiphone, marca de guitarras perteneciente a Gibson, acababa de fabricar una guitarra para Tommy Thayer (guitarrista de Kiss) y me llamaron para que les hiciese una sesión de fotos. Nunca he sido un gran fan de la banda pero estar con ellos en el camerino, ver como se maquillaban, como se vestían y como aquellos señores mayores se convertían en una especie de héroes galácticos del rock and roll fue una experiencia que nunca olvidaré.

Epiphone, a guitar brand that belongs to Gibson, had just made a guitar for Tommy Thayer (Kiss guitarist) and they called me for a photo session. I’ve never been a great fan of the band but to be with them at the dressing room, watch how they put on makeup, how they got dressed and how those mature men became a sort of Rock and Roll galactic heroes was an experience I’ll never forget.

And I ask myself (and I know you’re also doing it): How is it possible that I, a guy who claims to be modern and a music lover, don’t know such a cool gentleman as this one? Well, it’s very simple: because to work as a music photographer means to be more invisible than the pageboy of the Three Wise Men. But this is going to come to an end, because I’ve asked Juan Pérez Fajardo himself to choose three of his pictures, three pictures that he would like to get out from anonymity and that, as a sort of signature, he tells us the little story/anecdote/whatever that lies behind each of them.

Juan Pérez Fajardo: Iggy Pop es sin duda alguna el artista que marcó mi juventud y gracias a él (o por su culpa) compré mi primera guitarra y soñé durante años con ser una Rock Star. Tal vez por eso, cada vez que he tenido la oportunidad de fotografiarlo he sentido una sensación muy extraña, algo que no me ha pasado con ningún otro artista. Una voz interior me pedía a gritos que dejara de hacer fotos, me subiera al escenario y diera un abrazo a aquel tipo. Como es lógico nunca me atreví a hacerlo, pero estando trabajando en el festival SXSW de Austin (Texas) pasó algo mágico... Nada más disparar esta foto, Iggy tiró el micrófono al suelo y se lanzó al público aterrizando encima de mí. Tocarle y encima hacerlo de aquella manera fue algo increíble.

Estas fotografías y muchas más están expuestas de manera permanente en el lobby del Hotel Dorado en Ibiza. Así que puedes pasarte a verlas cuando quieras.

Juan Pérez Fajardo: A pesar de llevar tantísimos años sobre los escenarios y ser una de las estrellas de rock and roll más grandes de este país, a Loquillo le quedaba una espinita clavada: reventar la mítica plaza de la ventas de Madrid. Aquella noche del 24 de Septiembre de 2016 lo consiguió y por un instante el gigantesco personaje no pudo ocultar a la persona que hay debajo. Fue entonces cuando, con una sonrisa en los labios y un gesto de victoria, José María Sanz se giró hacia atrás del escenario, justo hacia el lugar donde yo estaba.

Este año Loquillo cumplirá 40 años de carrera y espero tener la oportunidad de poder volver a trabajar junto a él.

In spite of having been so many years onstage and being one of the biggest Rock and Roll stars in Spain, Loquillo had a thorn in his side: to shatter the mythical Plaza de las Ventas in Madrid. He did it that night on 24th September 2016 and, for a moment, the huge celebrity couldn’t hide the person who is inside. It was then when, with a smile on his lips and a triumph gesture, José María Sanz turned back on the stage, right towards where I was. This year, Loquillo will celebrate 40 years of career and I hope to have the chance of being able to work with him again.

Iggy Pop is undoubtedly the artist that marked my youth and thanks to him (or by his fault) I bought my first guitar and for years I dreamt about being a Rock Star. Maybe because of this, each time I’ve had the chance of shooting him I’ve had a very odd feeling, which I’ve never felt with any other artist. An inner voice cried out asking me to stop making photographs, get onstage and hug that guy. Naturally I never dared to do it but, working at the SXSW festival in Austin (Texas), something magical happened… Right after taking this picture, Iggy threw the microphone on the floor and pounced on the audience, landing on me. To be able to touch him, and, what’s more, in such a way, was really incredible.

These pictures and many others are exhibited permanently in the lobby of Hotel Dorado in Ibiza. So, you can come over and have a look at them whenever you like.

¿Qué fue antes, el vasco o la exageración?. A pesar de encontrarnos ante una pregunta tan antigua como los dientes de leche de Jordi Hurtado, la comunidad científica nunca ha sido capaz de ponerse de acuerdo en este asunto. Sin embargo, sí que parece existir un cuórum total a la hora de establecer el kilómetro cero del hiperbolismo euskaldun, y ese lugar no es otro que Bilbao.

Existen innumerables datos empíricos que avalan esta teoría, como por ejemplo el archiconocido suceso que tuvo lugar en una administración de lotería situada en los aledaños del estadio de San Mamés. Hasta allí acudió un señor con la noble intención de comprobar un boleto que había comprado el fin de semana anterior en Castro Urdiales (un pequeño pueblo a las afueras de Bilbo). La amable dependienta metió el décimo en la máquina y entre gritos y aplausos comunicó al caballero que su número estaba premiado con la friolera de 837 millones de euros. Lejos de alegrarse, el aguerrido bilbaino se encogió de hombros y dijo: “Bahhh, lo jugado”.

Pues bien, la última gran demostración del superlativo ADN vasco se llama Bilbao BBK Live, una auténtica bestialidad de festival de música al pil-pil por el que ya han desfilado algunas de las bandas más importantes de la historia del rock (lo que traducido al vasco sería “unos txavales que están empezando oye”): Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Muse, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Iron Maiden, The Police, The black Crows, Jane’s Addiction, R.E.M., Arcade Fire, Depeche Mode, The Black Keys, The Killers... Vamos, que los únicos grandes que aún no han tocado en este festi son Elvis y Jimi Hendrix. Pero que no cunda el pánico, la organización ya está trabajando en ello.

Con semejante historial a sus espaldas, Alfonso Santiago (director del BBK LIVE) cada año lo tiene más jodido para encontrar un cabeza de cartel que sorprenda a su público. Para lograrlo, en esta edición se pusieron sobre la mesa dos opciones la mar de sencillitas. La opción “A” era juntar sobre el mismo escenario y el mismo día a Damon Albarn (Blur) y a Noel Gallagher (Oasis). La opción “B”, bastante menos salvaje y más razonable, consistía en organizar una batalla de Air-Guitar en el barro entre Chuck Norris y Kim Jong-un. Esta segunda opción se vino abajo tras comprobar que el líder supremo norcoreano está de comunión el fin de semana del festival, así pues no hubo más remedio que optar por la primera opción.

Bilbao, situated in the north of Spain, is one of the bastions of the Spanish festival scene, precisely for the Bilbao BBK festival held each July on the outskirts of the city. This famous place is renowned for its “pintxos”, the Bilbao to Portsmouth ferry, the Guggenheim museum (the one with the mega gigantic dog made of flowers and the Butcher of Bilbao (football fans of a certain age know who I’m talking about, and he wasn’t a real butcher…)

Some of the most important bands in rock ‘n’ roll history have played at BBK including: Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Muse, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Iron Maiden, The Police, The black Crows, Jane’s Addiction, R.E.M., Arcade Fire, Depeche Mode, The Black Keys, The Killers... Let’s be honest, the biggest artists that haven’t played here are Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix.

However, don’t worry, the event organisers are working on these last two.

With such a history of rock’n’roll royalty playing at his festival, Alfonso Santiago (BBK Live director) has the mother of all annual ball aches trying to find a headliner that will surprise his audience. For this year’s festival he had two options. Option A: get Damon Albarn from Blur and Noel Gallagher from Oasis together on stage. Option B: (a lot less crazy and a hell of a lot more reasonable) organise an air guitar battle between Chuck Norris and Kim Jong-un while wrestling in the mud. The second option fell apart after the North Korean supreme leader phoned to say he was getting baptised on the same weekend as the festival, so there was nothing to do but go for Option A. So my little muckers, get yer tickets before they run out as you wouldn’t wanna miss this century’s most awaited rock-off: Gorillaz vs Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (think of King Kong vs the planes on the Empire State, will the ape win out this time?). As a bonus treat there are also some other bands you may have heard of: The Chemical Brothers, Florence + The Machine, Alt-J, The XX…

CINERAMA Menos festivales y más Cinerama

Señoras y señores, damas y damos, caballeros y caballeras: todos en pie porque ya está aquí la 2ª edición del festival de cine Cinerama. Bueno, en realidad no se trata de un festival de cine ya que aquí no hay premios feos, ni hay que ir vestido de esmoquin, ni tampoco hay películas de esas raras que no hay Dios que entienda. Aquí somos más de peliculón de culto, pantalla gigante al aire libre, tumbona frente al mar, un buen cubo de palomitas en una mano y un Gin Tonic Larios Rosé en la otra. Y toooooodo ello por tan solo 20€.

Y es que habiendo No-festivales así, ¿quién demonios quiere festivales?.

Las proyecciones tendrán lugar de junio a septiembre (los viernes en la terraza de Dorado y los martes en la terraza de Paradiso Art Hotel) y cada uno de los meses estará dedicado a un tema:

Junio: In Love With The Soundtrack

La cinta de casete que más trituré en mi pubertad fue el Nevermind de Nirvana. Le metí tanta caña que, al igual que Kurt Cobain, la cinta murió joven y dejó una bonita carcasa. Pero para entonces el grunge ya corría por mis venas nena, así que no tardé en pillarme de nuevo el disco en CD y años más tarde en vinilo.

Sin embargo, los riffs y alaridos de Mr. Cobaya nunca más volvieron a sonar igual de sucios, macarras y cojonudos que en mi pobre casete que en paz descanse. Y es que hay discos que vinieron al mundo para ser escuchados en un soporte en concreto y hacerlo en cualquier otro es como beber cerveza sin alcohol, que parece que sí pero es que no. Dicho esto, el mes de junio proyectaremos 3 discazos que nacieron para ser película: 24H Party People, Studio 54 y Streets of Fire.

Julio: American Attitude

¿Como hacen estos cabrones de americanos para que incluso las cosas más aburridas y anodinas de su cultura molen tanto?. Sus furgonetas de helados molan, sus chaquetas universitarias molan, sus buzones molan, sus entierros molan, sus carreteras secundarias molan, su presidente mola… Bueno el de ahora no mucho, pero el anterior no podía molar más y lo sabes. Así que haciendo honor a la frase “si algo gusta para qué cambiarlo”, este mes lo dedicaremos a dar un paseo por el American Way of Life: Almost Famous, From Dusk Till Down, Black Mirror: Special San Junipero, American Graffity, Drive y Cocktail.

Agosto: Young & Rebels

No digan Agosto, digan “A gusto”, porque el tema elegido para este mes será Sex, Drugs & Rock´n´Roll: The Lost Boys, The Outsiders, Risky Business y True romance. A buen entendedor pocas palabras bastan (y no me pongas cara de bueno que no cuela).

Septiembre: Best Actress Award

Y del mismo modo que hicimos en la ceremonia de apertura de este este artículo, pongámonos todos en pie para recibir a las encargadas de llevar a cabo la ceremonia de clausura del No-Festival de cine Cinerama 2018. Un fuerte aplauso para Michelle Pfeiffer, Carmen Maura, Rossy de Palma y Chus Lampreave, o lo que es lo mismo: Grease 2 y Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios.

OK, it’s not really a film festival because there aren’t any prizes, you don’t have to wear a tuxedo, and there aren’t any of those strange movies that no one understands. Here we just got cult movies, a giant outdoor screen, beach chairs, a big bucket of popcorn in one hand, and a Larios Rose gin tonic in the other. All for just € 20.

The screenings will take place from June to September (Fridays on the Dorado terrace and Tuesdays on the Paradiso terrace) and each month will be dedicated to a theme:

June: In Love With The Soundtrack

The cassette tape I most played to death in my youth was Nirvana – Nevermind. Man I caned that tape so much that, like Kurt Cobain, it died young and left a nice corpse. But by then the grunge was already running through my veins, so I bagged the album again on CD, and years later on vinyl. However, the riffs and shouts of Mr. Cobain never sounded as dirty, scary and fucked up as on my poor cassette, R.I.P. There are records that are born be heard on certain audio equipment, and listening to them on anything else is like drinking nonalcoholic beer; it tastes like beer but isn’t. That said, in June we’ll screen three albums that were born to be movies: 24 Hour Party People, Studio 54 and Streets of Fire.

July: American Attitude

How do these American bastards do it? Even the most boring and mundane parts of their culture are cool.

Their ice-cream vans are cool, their college jackets are cool, their mailboxes are cool, their funerals are cool, their secondary roads are cool, their president is cool ... Well, not the present one, but the previous one was supercool and you know it. So in honour of the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it”, this month we’ll take a walk along the American Way of Life with the following movies: Almost Famous, From Dusk Till Dawn, Black Mirror Special: San Junipero, American Graffiti, Drive and Cocktail.

August: Young & Rebels

This month’s film theme will be Sex, Drugs & Rock’n’Roll. I’ll leave you to think about that while I reel off the names of the films that feature plenty of all three: The Lost Boys, The Outsiders, Risky Business and True Romance. Sounds good, huh?

September: Best Actress Awarded

And just as we did in the Opening Ceremony of this article, let us all stand and welcome the women in charge of carrying out the Closing Ceremony of the Cinerama Non-Film Festival 1018. LOQUILLO’S SUITE

The Spanish rock ‘n’ roll artist has recently had a room dedicated to his career at Dorado Hotel in Ibiza, and he flew to Ibiza to perform at a private concert to close the successful second season of Dorado Live Shows and Rock Nights.

El artista estrenó una habitación dedicada a su carrera en el hotel Dorado de Ibiza y ofreció un concierto privado para cerrar la exitosa temporada de Dorado Live Shows y Rock Nights.

Su altísima figura – metro noventa y cinco – salió al escenario del hotel Santos. Enfundado en un traje azabache observó al público a través de sus gafas de sol. La noche era fresa pero no fría y el mar se mecía a pocos metros de distancia, muriendo en la orilla de Platja d’en Bossa. Quizás como homenaje al lugar donde se vivió este exclusivo concierto (solamente entraron 200 invitados, casi todos ibicencos relacionados de alguna manera con el show business musical de la isla: bandas locales, promotores, productores o fieles del rock and roll en directo), las guitarras de Josu García e Igor Paskual comenzaron a desgranar los primeros compases de El rompeolas. “Empieza fuerte”, se escuchó decir a alguien entre el público y, entre caladas y sonrisas, la voz ronca del cantante, que no era otro que Loquillo, empezó a cantar: “Lunes, martes, miércoles, mirando hacia el mar…”

La vida de varias generaciones de españoles puede explicarse a través de los versos que ha entonado o recitado la voz ronca de José María Sanz, orgulloso charnego de Barcelona que a mediados de los setenta, en plena adolescencia y en plena transición, decidió desafiar al mundo levantándose el flequillo. Cuarenta años después, Loquillo, el nombre de guerra con el que ha entrado en la historia contemporánea de la música española, sigue derrochando actitud, ahora desde su cuartel general de San Sebastián, la ciudad en la que vive desde hace años. En estas cuatro décadas lo ha sido todo: rockero de chupa de cuero, crooner de elegancia nocturna, rescatador de poetas olvidados…Liderando bandas o en solitario, el Loco se ha dejado el alma en miles de escenarios y nunca se ha mordido la lengua. ¿Pero qué le trajo hacia Ibiza? El exclusivo recital (que se vivió el pasado 6 de octubre y sirvió para cerrar la temporada de los Dorado Live Shows, rematando la fiesta con una fiesta de Rock Nights que el propio Loquillo no se quiso perder y que se prolongó hasta el amanecer) fue la guinda de su visita.

El Loco, realmente, aterrizó en la isla para recibir un homenaje en forma de suite. El hotel Dorado (perteneciente a Concept Hotel Group) decidió hace meses prepararle una sorpresa: personalizaría una de sus catorce habitaciones – la suite 408, concretamente – con memorabilia de este rockero híbrido que dentro de poco celebrará cuarenta años de carrera. “Los días que compartió con nosotros en Ibiza han sido inolvidables y él, que es un tío cultísimo, ha demostrado el gran carisma que tiene como artista y como persona”, explica Diego Calvo, propietario de Concept Hotel Group, la cadena que posee Dorado, Tropicana y Santos. Loquillo se paseó por una estancia a la que no le faltó ningún detalle. La inauguró poco antes de su actuación en acústico, donde no faltaron temas como El hombre de negro, Fuerte, feo y formal o Cruzando el paraíso, y que acabó con el público cantando a coro Cadillac solitario. Calvo es un gran admirador de Loquillo y, gracias a su buen amigo Javier Ajenjo, director del Sonorama, pudo llevar a cabo el sueño de invitar a Loquillo a la inauguración de su suite. De hecho, como señala Calvo, la parada ibicenca, fue un alto en el camino, una especie de respiro en medio de esta gira de dos años en la que se ha embarcado el músico y que culminó el próximo 15 de diciembre actuando en el WiZink Center de Madrid, la misma ciudad donde hace algo más de un año reventaba Las Ventas en un histórico concierto.

A la suite del Loco no le falta ningún detalle gracias a los diseños que ha hecho el artista gráfico Marcos Torres para la ocasión. Al abrir la puerta el single Rock and Roll Star recibe a los huéspedes girando en el tocadiscos.

Ese trabajo, el primero que grabó la voz de Loquillo, ha sido el elegido por la dirección artística de Concept para incluirlo, en calidad de disco honorífico, al resto de discos de oro que bautizan el resto de suites, donde no faltan los trabajos más memorables de Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles o The Doors. La música de este tema inolvidable ambienta un espacio en el que no falta una taza serigrafiada con un motivo diseñado exclusivamente para el padrino de la suite o los versos iniciales, precisamente, de su primer himno (has tenido suerte de llegarme a conocer / creo que a nadie le gusta el nacer para perder) adornando una de las paredes.

En el espejo del baño aparece desafiante la imagen del pájaro que acompaña al alter ego del artista desde que Epi, su amigo de viejas andanzas baloncestísticas, le bautizara con su conocido sobrenombre. En otro espejo, situado en el cabecero de la cama, aparece la serigrafía que perfila la silueta de Loquillo, que no dudó en dejarse fotografiar por Juan Pérez-Fajardo sentado en el inmenso lecho de la suite.

La memorabilia la completan tres piezas muy especiales: una camiseta conmemorativa del celebrado concierto que dio Loquillo en la sala Zeleste de Barcelona (la actual Razzmatazz) allá por 1988, una fotografía original del cantante en el concierto de Las Ventas del año pasado realizada por Juan Fajardo, espectáculo que ha supuesto un hito en su carrera, y una chaqueta cedida por el propio artista, una de las cuatro que lució en su gran show madrileño, enclavado en la gira Salud y Rock and Roll. Sus fans que se alojen en esta exclusiva habitación del Dorado (www.doradoibiza.com) podrán brindar por su ídolo con una botella de Neo, el tinto de Ribera del Duero que ha ideado Loquillo para estas bodegas burgalesas.

There are 200 guests, almost all of them Ibicencos related in some way to the island’s musical show business: local bands, promoters, producers or live rock ‘n’ roll fans. Perhaps as a tribute to the place where this exclusive concert is being held, the guitars of Josu García and Igor Paskual begin with the first chords of El Rompeolas (The Wavebreaker). “He’s going in hard” remarks some as the rough voice of Loquillo sings “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, looking towards the sea…”

When he was an adolescence in the middle of the 70s, during the midst of the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy, decided to challenge the world by growing a quiff. Forty years later, Loquillo, the nom de guerra with which he has entered the history of Spanish contemporary music, is still full of attitude, now based in his San Sebastian headquarters, where he has lived for many years. These four decades have seen him become a biker jacket rock ‘n’ roller, nocturnal crooner, rescuer of forgotten poets, band leader and a solo artist. El Loco has done it all on thousands of stages. But what brought him to Ibiza? The answer is his exclusive concert which closed the Dorado Live Shows season on the 6th October, finishing the evening with a party at Rock Nights that Loquillo himself attended and which continued until the early morn.

El Loco, has also arrived in Ibiza to receive a tribute in the form of a suite. Dorado Hotel decided some months ago to prepare a special surprise; personalising one of its fourteen rooms, Suite 408 specifically, with memorabilia from this rock ‘n’ roll star, who will soon celebrate his 40th anniversary on the road. “The time he shared with us in Ibiza was unforgettable, and as a cult figure, he demonstrated the great charisma that he has as an artist and as a person, “explained Diego Calvo, owner of Concept Hotel Group, the chain which owns Dorado, Tropicana and Santos Hotels. Loquillo’s stay didn’t lack any details. He inaugurated the room shortly before his acoustic concert, where there was no shortage of classics such as El Hombre de negro (The Man In Black), Feo, Fuerte y Formal (Ugly, Strong & Formal) or Cruzando el paraiso (Crossing Paradise), ending with the crowd singing acapella to Cadillac solitario (Solitary Cadillac). Diego is a great admirer of Loquillo and, thanks to his good friend Javier Ajenjo, director of the Sonorama Festival, was able to achieve his dream of inviting Loquillo to the inauguration of his suite. In fact, as Diego points out, this visit to Ibiza is a mini break and a kind of respite from the middle of Loquillo’s two-year tour on which the musician has embarked, culminating on the 15th December in the WiZink Center in Madrid, the same city where a little over a year ago he performed a historic concert in Las Ventas Bullring.

El Loco’s was designed by the graphic artist Marcos Torres and is full of interesting details. When you open the suite’s door, the single ‘Rock and Roll Star’ welcomes guests into the room as it automatically drops on the turntable. This single, the first one that Loquillo recorded, was chosen by Concept as the honorary record that will join the rest of gold records that baptise the other suites in the hotel, including classics from Bowie, The Stones, The Beatles and The Doors. There is a silkscreened cup and a motif designed exclusively for Loquillo with the opening verses of his song (you’ve been lucky to get to know me / I think nobody likes to be born to lose) decorating one of the walls. In the bathroom mirror, the image of the bird which accompanies the alter ego of the artist features, since Epi, his friend of old basketball adventures, baptised him with his well-known stage name. In another mirror, situated above the bed’s headboard, there is a huge silkscreen image of the artist’s silhouette from a famous Juan Pérez Fajardo photo.

The room’s memorabilia is completed with three very special pieces. A commemorative t-shirt from Loquillo’s epic concert in the Zeleste Club in Barcelona (now the Razzmatazz club) in 1988, an original photo by Juan Fajardo of the singer in the Las Ventas concert last year, which was one of the high points of his career, and a jacket lent by the artist himself, one of four that he wore in that legendary Madrid concert, from his Salud y Rock and Roll tour. HAWAIIAN & WESTERN SHIRT COLLECTOR ENCUENTA LO QUE AMAS Y DEJA QUE TE MATE / FIND WHAT YOU LOVE AND LET IT KILL YOU

Un griego solo puede ser dos cosas en esta vida: yogur o filósofo. Diógenes de Sinope nació en Grecia en el año 412 a. C. y nada más abrir un ojo se decantó por la filosofía (aunque se desconoce si lo hizo por vocación o porque el muchacho era alérgico a la lactosa). Su planteamiento teórico-vital defendía que no se puede alcanzar la sabiduría sin antes desprenderse de todas las pertenencias materiales y para predicar con el ejemplo, el tipo se lanzó a las calles y vivió el resto de sus días como un mendigo.

Como reconocimiento a toda una vida en mangas de harapo, la comunidad científica decidió inmortalizar a este personaje poniendo su nombre a una patología. Así nació el síndrome de Diógenes, un trastorno de la personalidad que se caracteriza por la acumulación desmedida de todo tipo de objetos inútiles e inservibles, como mecheros gastados, chupetes, ex novios o tarjeta de puntos de Iberia.

Pues bien amigas, hoy os vengo a hablar de un filósofo ibicenco contemporáneo que, a diferencia de Diógenes, jura por los clavos de Elvis que el único camino que puede llevar al ser humano a mejorar como especie no es la austeridad, si no el rock and roll. Su nombre es Diego Calvo y con tan solo 37 primaveras ya tiene el honor de dar nombre a una nuevo síndrome: el de Diegógenes.

Los afectados por esta rara mutación genética poseen un olfato hiper-super-mega desarrollado que-te-cagas que utilizan principalmente para dos cosas: para los negocios hoteleros y para encontrar las camisas más jodidamente cool del planeta.

Desoyendo a sus padres, quienes desde niño advirtieron a Diego de que se empieza por los hoteles y las camisas y se acaba en la droga, este se entregó por completo a su enfermedad/pasión y a día de hoy es presidente y socio fundador de Concept Hotel Group en Ibiza (Dorado, Santos, Cubanito, Tropicana y Paradiso), responsable de Rock Nights y posee una impresionante colección de más de 200 camisas hawaianas y western que son la envidiada del mundo camisil internacional. ¿Cómo?, ¿crees que exagero?, ¿crees que sus camisas no pueden ser para tanto? A Greek person can only be two things in this life: a yogurt or a philosopher. Diogenes of Sinope was born in Greece in 412, and as soon as he opened his eyes he became a philosopher (what is not known is whether he had a strong calling for philosophy or if he was allergic to lactose). His theoretical approach argued that wisdom can’t be achieved without first getting rid of all your material belongings and then preaching by example, so the guy took to the streets and lived the rest of his days as a beggar.

Diogenes made a virtue of poverty, and in honour of his devotion to his cause, the scientific community decided to immortalise his character by using his name to describe a pathogenesis, and so the Diogenes syndrome was born, a personality disorder characterised by the excessive accumulation of all kinds of useless objects, such as spent lighters, dummies, ex-boyfriends or British Airways frequent flyer points.

So, my friends I’ve come to talk about a contemporary Ibizan philosopher who, unlike Diogenes, swears that the only way that the human being can improve as a species is not by austerity, but through rock ‘n’ roll. His name is Diego Calvo, and at just 37 years old, has the honour of new syndrome being named after him: Diegógenes.

Those affected by this rare genetic mutation have a hyper-super-mega developed sense of smell that they use primarily for two things: the hotel business and for finding the coolest fucking shirts on the planet.

Even though he was discouraged by his parents, who when he was a child warned Diego that if he started with hotels, music and shirts he would end up ruined, he fully embraced his illness / passion and today is president and founding partner of Concept Hotel Group in Ibiza (Dorado, Santos, Cubanito, Tropicana and Paradiso Hotels), director of Rock Nights and has an impressive collection of more than 200 Hawaiian and Western shirts that are the envy of the international vintage shirt world.

MELENAS

Melenas han pasado en poco más de un año de tocar en los sótanos de sus bares favoritos de Pamplona a dar más de 10 conciertos en menos de una semana en el SXSW, uno de los festivales más prestigiosos del mundo. La razón de este ascenso meteórico se basa en un repertorio de garaje-pop brillante y lleno de ideas que tiene tanto de la escena Paisley Underground como de los grupos más zarrapastrosos del C-86. Elegancia, juego y un directo achispado y solidísimo para uno de los nombres con mayor proyección internacional de la escena garagera patria.

RUNA

Falta muy poco para que Runa se convierta en el grupo de punk-rock en castellano favorito de todos. En sus filas militan miembros de Los Tiki Phantoms o Vórtice, y su cantante es nada más y nada menos que El Carlo, uno de los mejores tatuadores de la ciudad condal. Pero el pedigrí no es nada sin la música, y el primer disco de Runa para el sello Bcore tiene grandes canciones a patadas. Si os gustan Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, los primeros Killing Joke y los himnos para cantar a gritos abrazando a tus colegas, apuntad su nombre.

Runa will soon become Spanish surf rock’s favourite band. The group is made up of 2 ex-members of Los Tiki Phantoms and Vórtice and the singer is El Carlo, one of the best tattoo artists in Barcelona. However pedigree is nothing without music and Runa’s new album on Bcore doesn’t disappoint. If you like Hüsker Du, The Replacements and Killing Joke, you’ll love Runa.

YAWNERS

Acordaos de la primera vez que escuchasteis a Green Bay o a Blink 182 en vuestra habitación. ¿Tuvisteis que coger una raqueta o un paraguas, o la escoba porque no podíais resistir dar cuatro guitarrazos al aire? Pues Yawners suenan un poco parecido a esa sensación. Dan ganas de tener 15 años otra vez y no nos pasa sólo a nosotros. Con apenas un par de singles y un EP ya han sonado en la BBC, sido finalistas del Proyecto Demo de Radio 3 y FIB, y tocado en festivales de pequeño formato por todo el estado.

Do you remember the first time that you heard Green Bay or Blink 182 in your bedroom? Did you grab a broom or a mop because you could resist an air guitar moment behind closed doors? Well Yawners has the same effect on people, making you feel like you are 15 years old again, and we aren’t the only ones to say that. With just a handful of singles they have already had their music played on BBC Radio, as well as being finalists on the Radio 3 (Spain) and FIB Demo Project.

They are already well-known name on small festival circuit in Spain and are definitely a name to look out for.

Melanas have, in a little over a year, gone from playing in the basements of their favourite bars in Pamplona to playing 10 concerts in less than week at SXSW, one of the world’s most prestigious music festivals. The reason for their meteoric rise is based on their brilliantly vigorous garage pop sound, reminiscent of C-86. Their hard-hitting concerts have made them one of the names to look out for on the international garage scene.

1. Encantado de conocerte, cuando yo era un joven de 20 años en Londres durante los años 90, tu nombre era omnipresente en toda la escena electrónica londinense. Luego te fuiste a Hawái y te quedaste más de 10 años. Cuando pienso en Hawái, me vienen a la cabeza los estereotipos habituales: pienso en Magnum PI, Hawái 5-0 (el programa original), Aloha, chicas con flores en el pelo, es como decir que los británicos simplemente comen pescado y patatas fritas y se emborrachan cuando están en el extranjero?

4. Teniendo esta variedad de influencias, ¿dirías que se reflejan en tus sesiones de Dj?

Hasta cierto punto, sí, los estereotipos están ahí; cuando llegas te dan la bienvenida con el “lei”. Que es un collar, una guirnalda de flores autóctonas. La gente se pone las flores detrás de las orejas, en el lado izquierdo si tienes novi@ y en el derecho si no. Es un lugar muy musical donde encuentras cosas como la guitarra hawaiana de slack key, y donde las mujeres usan los vestidos típicos hawaianos (mu mu´s) y la gente come lau lau, hay mucho de la cultura hawaiana estereotipada que todavía está viva y en buena forma, pero al mismo tiempo es muy moderna y actual con respecto a todas las cosas que encontrarías en una ciudad estadounidense. ¡incluso con todas las cosas que viste en Hawái 5-0 o Magnum!

5. Volviendo a Hawái, en el periódico Rock Nights, somos muy aficionados a coleccionar camisas hawaianas y de bowling, como un tipo que viste bien, coleccionabas también algunas piezas?

6. Cuando pensamos en Hawai, también pensamos en el surf, ¿te aficionaste?

Hawai siempre tuvo una cultura del entretenimiento, pero en lo que se refiere probablemente a la cultura hipster, fuimos uno de los primeros defensores de la música de baile progresiva. El espacio donde se llevó a cabo se describió como un espacio multimedia orientado a la comunidad y allí ocurrieron todo tipo de cosas: exposiciones de arte, fiestas, seminarios, proyecciones de películas ... Probablemente fuimos pioneros porque nos mudamos a un lugar llamado Hotel Street, de ahí el nombre The 39 Hotel. Nunca fue realmente un hotel, era solo un lugar, pero la gente solía llamar para reservar una habitación y teníamos que explicar que no era en realidad un hotel. Hotel Street en ese momento era un barrio chungo, muy deteriorado, al principio la gente decía: “oye, vamos a tu fiesta” y decíamos: “está en la calle del hotel”, y decían: “oh yo no bajo allí “. Han pasado 15 años y ahora está completamente aburguesado, con muebles bonitos, agradables cafés y restaurantes, etc. Pero definitivamente fuimos nosotros los que nos adelantamos al movimiento cultural moderno en ese aspecto.

3. Tus influencias musicales abarcan el acid house, los comienzos del hip-hop y la metamorfosis de la música disco hacia lo que hoy conocemos como música electrónica. En este éste periódico estamos particularmente interesados en tu época como baterista en una banda de punk rock de los 70, ¡cuéntenos más!

En lo que se refiere a la influencia del rock, mi primer contacto con la música fue la colección de discos de mi madre.

Tenía una gran selección de rock n roll original de los 50 como Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley y The Comets, Johnny Cash. Lo primero que me gustó personalmente fue la psicodelia tradicional basada en el blues, como Jimmy Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple, etc. Luego vino el punk rock y, en muchos aspectos, estaba más con la actitud que con la música. Si viste a Hendrix aplastar una guitarra o a Keith Moon rompiendo una batería, eso era una actitud punk, esos tipos sabían tocar. Mi banda favorita de punk era The Damned.

Lemmy de Motorhead tocaba con Hawkwind y durante un tiempo con The Damned, asi que seguí a Motorhead por el Reino Unido en el Bomber Tour, fue muy divertido hacer autostop. Había una banda llamada Eater que tenía un niño como batería, creo que tenía 11 años, era genial tener a un crío baterista, y yo también lo era. Iba a los pubs, con las novias de los otros miembros de la banda rellenando zumo de naranja con vodka para darme un poco de coraje.

Todo eso me marcó a una edad muy temprana a llevar un estilo de vida rock ‘n’ roll. Era cuando las chicas querían parecerse a Cher y los chicos a Keith Richards o a David Bowie, eran buenos tiempos.

La gente no se da cuenta de cuán cerca están del punk, del hip hop y del reggae, los punks y los rastas se consideraban marginados, así que salimos juntos y esa fue mi introducción al dub reggae, The Clash trajo al artista de graffiti Futura a Londres a principios de los 80 y los conectó al hip hop, donde tambiénahabía bandas de graffiti Futura a Londres principios decomo los 80Blondie y los haciendo discos de rap. conectó al hip hop, donde también había bandas como Blondie haciendo discos de rap.

Hasta cierto punto… no me gustaría ser considerado DJ de disco, DJ de música house o un DJ de techno, soy un DJ de personalidad, cuando pincho, entrego mi personalidad y trato de ofrecer lo que considero que es la mejor música para ese momento, pincho para la multitud y trato de mantener a la mayoría de la gente entretenida cuando pincho.

Lo creas o no Hawai no es el mejor lugar para comprar camisas hawaianas, Camden Lock en Londres lo es! ¡Los mejores bares de Tiki del mundo están en Texas! Cuanto más lejos te encuentres de Hawai, las cosas tienden a ser más “Tiki”. Una de las marcas de ropa más underground es Iolani Beach Wear, no tanto por las camisas Aloha, ya que son casi más estilo safari. Tienen algunas cosas interesantes y me gusta coleccionarlas.

Siempre hacía skateboard cuando era un niño en los años 70, tenía una tía que vivía en California y mi abuela siempre me traía patinetes cuando iba a visitar a mi tía! Siempre he sido un aficionado de California y de E.E.U.U, y muchas de las cosas que me gustan son de esa parte del mundo. Cuando me mudé a Hawai pasé mucho tiempo en el agua aprendiendo a surfear, y acabo de regresar de Bali, donde pasé 2 semanas navegando antes de pinchar en el Vice Weekender. Me encanta el surf, me da mucho equilibrio en mi vida, especialmente porque paso mucho tiempo en los clubes nocturnos y en los estudios, así que sentarme sobre el océano y montar sobre las olas cósmicas del sol es algo muy especial.

7. ¿Cómo estuvo el Vice Weekender?

Súper, alocado, muy divertido, buenos momentos en general, jugando en el Potato Head Beach Club en Bali y pasando un par de semanas navegando en Uluwatu y Chengdu, para cualquiera que haga surf reconocerá esos nombres. Bali tiene buenas olas durante todo el año, mientras que en Hawai, las grandes olas vienen en el invierno y en California en el verano.

8. Creo que compartimos la misma aversión de ir a Ibiza al principio y luego enamorarnos de ella cuando finalmente llegamos. Has tenido un gran impacto en la escena de Ibiza a tu regreso con sesiones regulares en Amnesia, Space y tu residencia en Pikes. ¿Esperabas que tu sonido fuera tan popular, especialmente en los clubes más grandes?

Pincho para el público, la gente dice: “eres muy afortunado de poder hacer lo que quieres”, pero eso no es verdad, pincho lo que la gente quiere, es posible que no sepan que eso es lo que quieren, pero es eso lo que quieren. Desde Hostal La Torre hasta Pikes o Pacha, me adapto a la situación, obtienen mi personaje en la música, disfruto la melodía y la pasión. No tiene que ser un género, no llevo un concepto preconcebido de lo popular que puede ser o no y felizmente la gente ha subido a bordo, especialmente en Pikes, que se ha convertido en mi residencia de verano emblemática y es absolutamente fantástico.

9. Tus sets son, digamos, a prueba de Shazam, ¿crees que es importante que los DJs reserven una cierta mística?

Un poco, hay algunos discos que me llevan tiempo encontrar, recabar y ofrecer a la gente, no soy demasiado reservado con esto. Me hace sonreír cuando veo a una persona bañada en esa luz azul y luego la frustración en su cara, porque en realidad deberían haber estado bailando en lugar de estar buscando el tema, y luego subir y preguntarme qué era. Deberían ser un poco más pacientes y disfrutar el momento. ¡Si me preguntan, vale.

Seguramente les diré q era.

10. Si no fueras un DJ y productor con personalidad, ¿qué habrías hecho?

Probablemente estaría saludando a la gente en Sainsbury’s, (Mercadona para un español) no estoy cualificado para hacer otra cosa que no sea ser un artista. Cuando estaba en la escuela me preguntaban: “Harvey, ¿qué quieres hacer cuando seas mayor? y yo decía que quería ser batería en una banda de rock ‘n’ roll, uno de esos chicos geniales que andan por Soho, de los que parecen que no hacen nada en todo el día. ¡Gracias a Dios que funcionó para mí! Pero en aquellos momentos decían: “esa no es una opción, tendrás que unirte a la Fuerza Aérea o trabajar en una fábrica de salchichas o algo así”. Hice algunos trabajos de mierda antes de convertirme en DJ profesional, así que estaría encantado de saludar a la gente en Sainsbury’s o de reponer en Blockbuster, y pasar el fin de semana tocando en una banda de tributo a Cream. ¡Mientras paguen la renta y puedan reírse el fin de semana, estaría feliz!

1. Please to make your acquaintance, as a young 20 something in London during the 90s your name was ubiquitous across the London dance scene. Then you went to Hawaii and stayed for more than 10 years.

When I think of Hawaii the usual stereotypes come to mind: think of Magnum P.I, Hawaii 5-0 (the original show), Aloha, girls with flowers in their hair, is this like saying that British people just eat fish and chips and get very drunk when abroad?

To a certain extent yes, the stereotypes are there; when you arrive if you’re lucky you get “leid”. Which is a flower lei, a garland made of indigenous flowers. People wear flowers behind their ears, on the left-hand side if you have a partner and on the right if not. It’s a very musical place with things liken the Hawaiian slack key guitar, and where ladies wear mu mu’s and people eat lau lau’s. There’s so much of the stereotypical Hawaiian culture that is still alive and well, but at the same time it is very modern and up to date with all the things that you would find in an American city, along with all the things you’d see on Hawaii 5-0 or Magnum!

2. While in Hawaii you created a club and radio show, The 39 Hotel, was it fertile ground to create something new and fresh there?

Hawaii’s always had an entertainment culture but as far as what’s probably thought of as hipster culture, we were one of the first advocates for progressive dance music. The space where it was held was described as a communityoriented multimedia space and all kinds of things happened there: art shows, parties, seminars, film shows… we were probably groundbreaking because we moved into a place called Hotel Street, hence the name The 39 Hotel. It was never actually a hotel, it was just a venue, but people would often call to reserve a room and we would have to explain that it wasn’t actually a hotel! Hotel Street at that time was a dodgy area, very “cracked” out, at first people would say “hey we’re coming to your party” and we would say “it’s in Hotel Street” and they’d say “ooh I’m not coming down there”. Fast forward 15 years and it’s now completely gentrified with soft furnishings, nice cafes and restaurants etc. but we were definitely the pioneers of modern cultural entertainment in that area 3. Your musical influences cover acid house, the beginnings of hip-hop and the metamorphosis of disco into what we know today as electronic music. For this newspaper we are particularly interested in your time as a drummer in a punk rock band in the 70s, tell us more!

As far as the rock influence is concerned the first music that I got into was my mum’s record collection, she had a great collection of original rock n roll from the 50s like Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and The Comets, Johnny Cash. The first music I liked on my own was blues based traditional psych like Jimmy Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple etc., then punk rock came along and in many respects I was more into the attitude than the music. If you watched Hendrix smash up a guitar or Keith Moon smash up a drum kit, it was a punk attitude, but those guys could actually play. My fave punk band was The Damned. Lemmy from Motorhead, who also played for Hawkwind, also played for The Damned a little while, I followed Motorhead around the UK on the Bomber Tour, that was a lot of fun hitchhiking around. There was a band called Eater who had a baby drummer I think he was 11 years old, it was hip to have a baby drummer, and I was a baby drummer as well! I was going to pubs, with the girlfriends of the older band members topping up my orange juice with vodka to give me a bit of Dutch courage. This instilled the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle from a very young age, at a time when girls wanted to look like Cher and boys wanted to look like Keith Richards or David Bowie, cool times.

People don’t realize how close punk, hip hop and reggae are, the punks and the rastas were considered outcasts so we hung out together and that was my introduction to dub reggae, The Clash brought graffiti artist Futura to London in the early 80s and that connected me to hip hop, where you also had bands like Blondie making rap records.

I find that categories are only useful for journalists, to be honest there are only 2 kinds of music, country and western.

I’ve been into this for a long time and whatever new comes along I’m interested in. Back in 1975 / 1976 punk was the new movement.

4. Having these different types of influences, would you say they are reflected in your DJ sets?

To a certain extent, I wouldn’t like to be considered as a disco DJ or a house DJ or a techno DJ, I’m a personality DJ, when I DJ you get my personality and I try and play whatever I think is the best music for that moment, I play to the crowd and try to keep the majority of the people entertained when I play.

5. Coming back to Hawaii, at Rock Nights Newspaper we are keen collectors of Hawaiian and bowling alley shirts, as a sharp dresser yourself did you collect some choice pieces?

underground clothing labels is Iolani Beach Wear, not so much Aloha shirts, it’s almost like safari wear. They have some cool stuff and I like to collect those.

6. When we think of Hawaii we also think of surf, did you indulge?

I always skateboarded as a kid in the 70s, I had an aunt who lived in California and my grandmother would always bring me back skateboards when she went to visit my auntie, I’d always have the hot ride! I’ve always been a Californiaphile and an Americophile and a lot of stuff I’m into is from that part of the world. When I moved to Hawaii I spent a lot of time in the water learning how to surf, and I’ve just got back from Bali where I spent 2 weeks surfing before DJing at the Vice Weekender there. I love surfing it puts a lot of balance in my life, especially because I spend a lot of time in nightclubs and studios, so to sit in the ocean and ride the cosmic waves of the sun is a very special thing indeed.

7. How was the Vice Weekender?

Super, messy, a lot of fun, good times all round, playing at the Potato Head Beach Club in Bali and hanging out for a couple weeks surfing beforehand in Uluwatu and Chengdu, for anyone who surfs they will recognize those names.

Bali has good surf all year round whereas in Hawaii the big surf comes in the winter and in California it comes in the summer.

8. I think we shared the same aversion of going to Ibiza at first and then falling in love with it when we finally arrived. You’ve made a huge impact on the Ibiza scene on your return with regular sets in Amnesia, Space and your residency at Pikes. Did you expect your sound would be so popular, especially in the bigger clubs?

I play to the crowd, people say “you’re so lucky you get to play whatever you want”, but that’s not true, I play what the people want, they may not know that’s what they want, but it is what they want. From Hostal La Torre to Pikes or Pacha, I adapt to the situation, you get my character in the music, I enjoy melody and passion in the music. It doesn’t have to be one genre, I had no preconceived concept as to how popular it may or may not be and happily people have come on board, especially at Pikes, which has become my flagship summer residency and its absolutely fantastic.

9. Your sets are shall we say Shazam proof, do you think it is important for DJs to retain a certain mystique?

A little bit, there are some records I take time to find and dig out and present them to the people, I’m not overly precious about the information. It does make me smile when I see a person bathed in that blue light and then the frustration on their face, because really they should have been dancing to the damn thing and then come up and ask me what it was. They should be a little more patient and actually enjoy the moment. If they ask me nicely I’ll be sure to tell them!

10. If you weren’t a personality DJ and producer, what would you have done?

I would probably be greeting people at Sainsbury’s, I’m completely unqualified to do anything else but be an entertainer. When I was at school they would ask me “Harvey what do you want to do when you grow up and I’d say I want to be a drummer in a rock ‘n’ roll band, one of those cool kids that hang around Soho all day looking like they don’t do anything. Thank god it worked out for me! But back in those days they were like “that’s not an option, you’ll have to join the air force or work in a sausage factory or something like that. I did do some crappy jobs before I managed to turn pro DJ, so I’d be happy to greet the people at Sainsbury’s or stacking shelves at Blockbuster, and at the weekend playing in a Cream tribute band. As long as your rent’s paid and you can have a laugh at the weekend I’d be happy with that!

Believe it or not Hawaii is not the best place to buy Hawaiian shirts, Camden Lock is! The best Tiki bars in the world are in Texas! The further away you get from Hawaii the more “Tikied” out things tend to be. One of the more

Pues bien, Curro Coronel actualmente reside en Londres. El showroom de la marca y su estudio se encuentran en el conocido barrio de Notting Hill y vive a caballo entre su tienda “ La Sombrerería Clandestina” en el barcelonés Barrio de Gràcia y las ferias de moda a las que puede asistir.

Well, Curro Coronel currently resides in London. The showroom of the brand and its studio are located in the well-known neighborhood of Notting Hill where he resides, but splits his time between Fabrica Lab “La Sombrerería Clandestina” store in Barcelona’s Barrio de Gràcia and the fashion fairs he can attend.

Su trabajo es íntegramente artesanal, empieza y termina con sus manos y él se define así, cómo un artesano con alma de artista. De familia le viene lo de artista, su abuelo y su padre cantaban flamenco, pero su padre eligió la familia por encima de la dedicación que necesita el arte.

His work is entirely handmade, he starts and ends with his hands and he defines himself as such: a craftsman with the soul of an artist. His artistic vein runs in the family. His grandfather and father sang flamenco, but his father chose the family over the dedication that art needs.

A él no le ha ocurrido, corren otros tiempos a favor del arte, en pro de los artistas y reconoce, que aunque actualmente el sombrero es un producto duro en este mercado, él está mas que convencido de que tiene un lugar en la moda, un lugar que se le arrebató hace tiempo y que Curro quiere devolver a golpe de trabajo y dedicación.

I BET YOU DON’T HAVE THE BALLS TO... GO TO

SONORAMA No hay huevos a... ir al Sonorama

Hay un comienzo de frase que es la responsable principal de los mayores avances de la humanidad, así como de los cagadones más recordados de la historia moderna. Y esta no es otra que la mítica y laureada: “No hay huevos a…”. Estas a priori inocentes e inofensivas cuatro palabras han hecho caer imperios, han llevado al hombre a la luna y en su día empujaron a Michael Jackson a ponerse zapatos con calcetines blancos.

Pues bien, esa misma composición lingüística es la culpable de que un intrépido grupo de jovenzuelos de Aranda de Duero, hartos de gastarse los cuartos recorriendo España para ver en concierto a sus artistas preferidos, dijeran: “No hay huevos a... montar un festivalaco aquí en el pueblo y que así sean las bandas las que vengan a vernos a nosotros”. Todos sabían que aquella idea era una auténtica locura, pero aun así sacaron pecho, tragaron saliva y gritaron al unísono la única respuesta que un español decente puede dar ante semejante pregunta: “¡Pues claro que hay y bien gordos!”.

La primera edición del Sonorama tuvo lugar en 1998 en la plaza de toros de la ciudad y el éxito del evento puede clasificarse como “discretito”, ya que asistieron más bandas (3) que público.

Sin embargo, estos aguerridos arandinos, gente optimista y curtida a golpe de lechazo, morcilla y vino, no tiraron la toalla y al año siguiente decidieron hacer una segunda edición. Hoy, 21 años después, el festival cuenta con más 60.000 espectadores, 150 artistas nacionales e internacionales, 10 escenarios repartidos entre el recinto principal y las calles de la ciudad y un sinfín de actividades paralelas.

Todo esto y mucho más ha convertido a Aranda de Duero en el hábitat natural de un animal en peligro de expansión: el popero ibérico.

Hace unos días me encargaron hacer este artículo que supuestamente tenía que incluir una entrevista a Javier Ajenjo, director del Sonorama.

Estuve horas recopilando información sobre las diferentes ediciones y redacté un interminable y aburrido email con las típicas preguntas rollo: ¿como fueron los comienzos?, ¿qué anécdota recuerdas con más cariño?, ¿lo de Raphael es pelo natural o peluquín?... Pero justo cuando estaba a punto de apretar el botón “enviar” descubrí que en las redes sociales se estaba extendiendo un rumor que lo cambió todo.

El cabeza de cartel de todos los años es un secreto férreamente guardado por la organización y su nombre nunca se desvela hasta el último momento. Pero en el mundo del indie se empezó a rumorear que el artista top de esta edición 2018 no era otro que el inigualable, el genuino, el único: Julio Iglesias. ¡Joder qué grande!. Me pareció que aquella noticia eclipsaba y dejaba sin valor periodístico todo el cuestionario que había elaborado. Así que me dije a mi mismo: “No hay huevos a… mandar al director del festival un email con tan solo una pregunta: ¿Qué hay de lo de Julio?”. Así lo hice, imaginando que el tipo no soltaría prenda. Pero lo que no me esperaba ni muerta es que su respuesta fuera tan jodidamente genial: “Pues sigue todo en pie, la segunda quincena las niñas se van de campamento a Briviesca y mi mujer y yo aprovecharemos para ir a casa de mis padres unos días. Gracias Pablo por tu interés y espero que tú también tengas un maravilloso y placentero verano”.

This classic phrase, used to dare people to do something “loco” is the same reason why an intrepid group of youngsters from Aranda de Duero, tired of spending their money touring the length and breadth of Spain to see their favourite artists in concert, said: “I bet we don’t have the balls ... to start a big festival right here in our town, so that our favourite bands have to come and see us? “ Everyone knew that this idea was crazy, but even so they stuck their chests out, swallowed hard and shouted, in unison, the only answer that a decent Spaniard could give to such a question: “We’ve got huge balls!”.

The first edition of Sonorama took place in 1998 in the Aranda de Duero bullring, and the event can best be described as a discreet success as there were more bands (3) than people. However, these brave Arandinos, optimistic and hardened people raised on lamb, blood sausage and wine, didn’t throw in the towel and the following year they decided to do a second edition. Today, 21 years later, the festival has more than 60,000 attendees, with 150 national and international artists, 10 stages scattered between the main venue and the city’s streets along with a host of parallel activities. All of this and much more has turned Aranda de Duero into the natural habitat of an animal who was in danger of extinction: the Iberian pop lover.

A few days ago I was commissioned to write this article that supposedly had to include an interview with Javier Ajenjo, director of Sonorama. I spent hours upon hours collecting information on the

different editions of the festival, as well as writing an endless and boring email with the typical questions: How did Sonorama start? What is your favourite anecdote? Is Raphael’s hair real or does he wear a toupee? But just as I was about to press send I discovered a rumour that was doing the rounds on the social networks that changed everything.

The headliner of each year’s Sonorama is a closely guarded secret that is revealed by the event’s organisation at the very last moment.

On the indie scene however, rumour has it that the festival’s main artist is none other than the incomparable, genuine and only Julio Iglesias.

OMG! WTF! If this is true then it totally eclipses any other music news this year! So I said to myself: “You don’t have the balls to send an email with just one question to the festival’s director: “What happening with Julio?” So that’s what I did, imagining that the guy wouldn’t say a peep. What I didn’t expect was his fucking cool answer: “Well, everything is still happening, my girls are going camping in a fortnight’s time in Briviesca, and me and my wife will take time off to go and visit my parents for a few days. Thank you Pablo for your interest and I hope that you also have a wonderful and pleasant summer. “

THERE’S MORE OUT THERE THAN TECHNO IBIZA: HAY VIDA MÁS ALLÁ DEL TECHNO

No amigas, no es cierto lo que dicen por ahí de que solo de electrónica vive el Homo Ibicencus. Y como muestra de ello os voy a hablar del festival de música no chiquitán-chiquiti-tán-tán-tán más mejor de Ibiza y alrededores: el Sueños de Libertad. Se trata de un festival muy resultón por cuyas tablas ya han pasado las bandas más “tía, son lo más” de la escena musical patria: León Benavente, Amaral, Quique González, Ángel Stanich, Fuel Fandango, Corizonas, Leiva, Zahara, Iván Ferreiro…

* Licencia “All the orejas you can eat” de 365 días posteriores al festival. Durante este periodo de tiempo el comprador tiene el derecho (y la obligación moral) de restregar por la cara a todos sus amigos y/o enemigos, que el verano pasado estuvo de fiestón en Ibiza. Oferta válida para redes sociales, conversaciones telefónicas, grupos de WhatsApp, cenas de empresa, bodas, funerales y cualquier otro acto en el que participen 2 o más personas incluyendo al comprador.

Ya, ya sé lo que estás pensando: “Hay tropecientos y pico mil festivales veraniegos en este país y en todos actúan prácticamente los mismos señores/as. Pues voy a darte un par de razones de peso que demuestran que el Sueños de Libertad es un evento único e inmejorable dentro de la escena ibérico-festivalera: No actúan Vetusta Morla y el abono cuesta tan solo 40 Eurípides.

Por cierto, se me olvidaba comentarte que la edición de este año tendrá lugar los días 17, 18 y 19 de mayo y contará con las actuaciones en directo de Orishas, The Original Wailers, Juanito Makandé, Loquillo, Los Bengala, Guadalupe Plata, Fantastic Negrito, Él mató a un policía motorizado y muchos más artistas por confirmar (esto último es literal, no se trata del nombre de ninguna banda de modernos).

Además, el precio incluye: * 3 días de sol del bueno, de ese rico que te pone rubias las pestañas. * 3 noches de calor sabrosón, de ese que te da un nosequé-quéseyo que te hace venirte muy, pero que muy arriba. * Entrada libre e ilimitada a las más de 50 calas de agua cristalina como Vichy Catalan con las que cuenta la isla (algunas de ellas a menos de 5 min. a pie del escenario central). * Acceso a más de 22 conciertos al aire libre. Por si resulta que eres de ese tipo de gentuza rara que va a los festivales a escuchar música.

Así pues, gritad todos conmigo: ¡Rockeros, poperos, raperos, músicasdelmunderos, flamenqueros y demás “-eros” (a excepción de Eros Ramazzotti), este año no tenéis excusa ninguna para no pillaros un Ryanair y venirsus todos a Ibiza a mover al unísono vuestras greñas, flequillos, gorras, rastas y mulés!

No, my friends, it’s not true when they say that Homo Ibicencus only listens to electronica. To make my case I’m going to talk about an Ibiza music festival that isn’t based on BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! CHK! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! and it’s called Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom). This festival has gone from strength to strength, featuring some of Spain’s best bands including: León Benavente, Amaral, Quique González, Ángel Stanich, Fuel Fandango, Corizonas, Leiva, Zahara and Iván Ferreiro.

* Access to more than 22 open-air concerts. In case you’re that type of weirdo who likes to going to festivals to hear music. * Licence to brag for 365 days after the concert. INTERVIEW WITH IZZY FROM BLACK HONEY Entrevista con Izzy de Black Honey

1. How was it like touring with Royal Blood last year?

Fucking amazing we had the best time playing arenas and concert halls every night.

2. You long-awaited first album is due out at the end of summer 2018, can you give us the lowdown on how it will sound?

It’s a bad-ass record with loads of heartbreak and cinema.

3. Where can we see you guys performing live this year? I guess with the album you’ll be hitting the road hard.

Yeah we will be at Latitude, 2000 trees, Truck and many more! We hope to be back on the island soon though as we loved playing Ibiza Rocks last year.

4. Is the long and winding road to fame and glory a smooth ride or have there been pitfalls on the way?

Music is pretty up and down, it’s quite intense to base your career on something that is solely dependant on your headspace. Sometimes my head doesn’t wanna play ball and I can’t write, where as other times I feel so on fire the rest of the world can’t keep up.

5. With all that has been happening lately with men being rightly called out for sexual harassment and sexism, do you think things will start to get easier for women in the industry?

Yeah, I think the music industry is just a reflection of the culture we live in, and as we see those changes in music hopefully we’ll see them in the world around us too.

6. Your video for Dig was one of my favourites of the year, total Tarantino style! As well as Mr T what other influences do you draw on in your videos?

I love all kinds of cinema, for Dig we took a lot of inspiration from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliette. I also love Andy Warhol and the whole factory scene and love reading poems.

8. Will you be back to Ibiza for more rock and roll mayhem in 2018?

All I can say is watch this space!

3. ¿Dónde podemos veros tocar en directo este año? Supongo que con el álbum saldréis a la carretera dándole duro.

4. ¿El camino largo y serpenteante hacia la fama y la gloria es un viaje suave o han surgido trampas en el camino?

La música es como una montaña rusa, es bastante intensa para basar tu carrera en algo que depende únicamente de tu cabeza. A veces no está preparada y no puedo escribir, como en otros momentos en los que me siento tan en racha que nadie puede conmigo.

5. Qué opinas sobre todo lo que ha estado sucediendo últimamente con los hombres que con razón han sido tachados por el acoso sexual y el sexismo, ¿cree que las cosas comenzarán a ser más fáciles para las mujeres en la industria?

Sí, creo que la industria de la música es solo un reflejo de la cultura en la que vivimos y, a medida que veamos esos cambios en la música, con suerte los veremos también en el mundo que nos rodea.

6. ¡Tu video para Dig fue uno de mis favoritos del año, el estilo total de Tarantino! Además del Sr. T, ¿qué otras influencias usas en tus videos?

Adoro todo tipo de películas, de Dig nos inspiramos mucho en Romeo y Julieta de Baz Luhrmann.

También amo a Andy Warhol y toda la escena de la Factory y me encanta leer poemas.

7. ¿Cómo fue tu sesión de fotos en Tropicana Ibiza Suites el año pasado?

Fue increíble. He sido bastante reservada acerca de enseñárselas a la gente porque quiero venir y hacer más cosas increíbles allí. Es mi hotel favorito en el que he estado y cuando vinimos todo el mundo estaba como “oh Dios mío! Has diseñado tú este este hotel?”

8. ¿Volverás a Ibiza para tener más caos de rock and roll en 2018? ¡Todo lo que puedo decir es que estéis atentos a nuestras novedades!

DORADO IBIZA SUITES SE CONVIERTE EN UNA GALERÍA DE ARTE GRACIAS A MONDO GALERIA El pasado 27 de junio de 2017 se inauguró una exposición que recoge catorce fotografías originales de los cantantes y bandas que dan nombre a las habitaciones del hotel con sus discos de oro más recordados.

La cámara de fotos y la guitarra eléctrica han estado hermanadas desde los inicios del rock and roll. No se puede entender la historia de la cultura que revolucionó el siglo XX sin las inolvidables fotografías que se tomaron de los Beatles, Bon Dylan, Elvis Presley o los Rolling Stones. Esta relación cobra fuerza con la propuesta que prepararon Dorado Ibiza Suites y Mondo Galeria para el verano de 2017. El hotel ibicenco, un templo consagrado al rock, se convirtió en una galería de arte al colgar en cada una de sus suites una imagen original de las catorce leyendas de la música que grabaron los discos de oro que dan nombre a las inimitables suites del Dorado. El pasado 27 de junio fue el día elegido para inaugurar una exposición fotográfica que condensa el sonido legendario de trabajos como el ‘‘We are the champions”, de Queen, o “Light my fire”, de los Doors.

Diego Alonso, director de Mondo Galeria, un espacio artístico referente en la ciudad de Madrid, ha sido el encargado de escoger las icónicas instantáneas, obras maestras captadas por la mirada de siete fotógrafos entre los que se encuentran Terry O´Neill, Alfred Wertheimer o Juan PérezFajardo. Los clientes que se alojen en Dorado Ibiza Suites podrán disfrutar de la compañía silenciosa de David Bowie, los Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, Blondie o Loquillo a través de las fotografías que añadirán un atractivo más a la cuidada decoración creada por el estudio Ilmiodesign. Tampoco faltó a la cita Julio Iglesias, quien tiene una suite dedicada en el hotel ibicenco gracias a “Soy un truhán, soy un señor”, uno de los LP’s más coreados de la historia musical. Además, los amantes del rock que duerman en el establecimiento de Platja d’en Bossa podrán comprar también las fotografías y llevarse a casa un pedacito de la historia de la música.

“Esta nueva experiencia surgió de un encuentro con Diego Calvo, socio de Dorado Ibiza Suites.

Pensamos que la imagen de los músicos homenajeados en cada suite podría añadir a la experiencia que se ofrece en cada habitación con sus vinilos en 45rpm, sus neveras Marshall o sus duchas en las que puedes cantar sintiéndote Elvis… Para ello era necesario hacerlo con estilo, invitando a fotógrafos que en sí mismos son iconos tan importantes como los mismos músicos…”, explica Diego Alonso.

A la inauguración acudieron algunos de los autores de las fotos que se expusieron en el hotel.

Juan Pérez-Fajardo, referencia fotográfica indiscutible en el rock español e internacional, estuvo presente. “Para mí es un honor ver dos de mis fotografías expuestas en un hotel como Dorado, que homenajea de una forma tan brillante a los artistas que siempre me han apasionado. Mi sueño de chaval era tener mi propia banda y emular a mis ídolos, pero con el tiempo descubrí que realmente tenía talento para la fotografía y no para la música. Con mi cámara he podido vivir el día a día de muchísimas giras. Es una gran responsabilidad y una alegría al mismo tiempo que muchas bandas confíen en mí para que cree su imagen. Yo trato que las fotografías que les hago suenen, y transmitan a quien las vea la música que ellos componen”, explica Fajardo.

El fotógrafo madrileño colgó de las paredes del establecimiento de Concept Hotel Group dos imágenes de Kiss e Iggy Pop, que decoraron las suites consagradas a dos álbumes que arrasaron en su momento: “I was made for lovin’ you” y “Lust for Life”. Charlar con él mientras se bebe un cocktail o una copa en la terraza o la piscina del hotel Dorado ya es posible desde el pasado 27 de junio, una noche donde el rock se convirtió en imagen a la orilla del Mediterráneo.

Tributo fotográfico a las estrellas del rock

The 27th June sees the inauguration of an exposition with 14 original photographs of the singers and bands whose names are on the doors of each room, along with their most famous gold certified records.

Photos and the electric guitar have been linked since the beginnings of Rock ‘n’ roll. It would be impossible to understand the history of the music that revolutionised the 20th century without the unforgettable photos of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones. This link will be come even stronger with the exhibition that Dorado Ibiza Suites and Mondo Galeria are preparing for summer 2017. The Ibicencan hotel, a consecrated temple of rock, will become an art gallery when an original photo of 14 musical legends is hung up in each fabulous suite of Dorado. These photos will match the name of the artist on the door. The 27th June is the chosen day to inaugurate this photographic exposition, amplifying even further the sound of “We Are The Champions” by Queen or “Light My Fire” by The Doors.

Diego Alonso, director of Mondo Galeria, one of the most important artistic spaces in Madrid, is the person responsible for choosing the iconic pictures, masterpieces captured by the eye of seven photographers including: Terry o’Neill, Alfred Wertheimer and Juan Pérez-Fajardo. The clients who stay at Dorado Ibiza Suites will enjoy the silent company of David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, Blondie and Loquillo among others, with photographs that will make the superbly decorated suites, by Ilmiodesign, even more attractive. Julio Iglesias won’t be missing this party either, with a suite dedicated to the Spanish master in Dorado. His famous “Soy un truhan, soy un señor” is one of the most popular albums in music history. Rock ‘n’ roll lovers who get some shuteye in this Playa d’en Bossa establishment will also be able to buy the photographs on show and take a little bit of Rock ‘n’ roll history back home.

This new experience came to fruition through a chance meeting with Diego Calvo, one of the partners of Dorado Ibiza Suites. Diego Alonso explained “We thought that each suite would be even cooler with photographs of each person in the room, taken by photographers who are as iconic as the artists in the photos. The photos add to the experience of each room which have: turntables, Marshall fridges and showerheads in the form of vintage microphones where you can pretend to be Elvis” Some of the photographers whose works will be on show will also be present at the inauguration.

Juan Pérez-Fajardo, one of the leading photographers in Spanish and international rock for example. He said “For me, it’s an honour to have two of my photos shown in a hotel such as Dorado, that pays homage in such a brilliant way to artists that I have always loved. When I was a kid my dream was to have my own band and emulate my idols. However, over time I realised that what I really had talent for was photography, not music. With my camera I have shot the day to day of many tours. It’s a huge responsibility as well as a joy that so many bands have confided in me to take pictures. I want my photos to make you dream and transmit the music that is being played”.

This photographer from Madrid will hang up two photos of Kiss and Iggy Pop on the walls of Dorado, decorating the suites named after two blockbusting albums: “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” and “Lust For Life”. You’ll be able to chat with him over a cocktail on the terrace of Dorado Hotel, on the 27th June, a night where rock will become a photo on the shores of the Mediterranean.

¿Alguna vez has pedido gazpacho y paella en un restaurante libanés?. ¿Viajaste a Nepal para asistir a una misa Gospel?. ¿Fuiste a comprar un Kimono a Burundi?. Si has respondido afirmativamente a alguna de estas preguntas, podemos afirmar que eres un claro ejemplo de lo que en medicina moderna se denomina como: un puto tarao. En ese caso, te aconsejo encarecidamente que dejes de leer esto, anules tu suscripción a la Asociación Nacional del Rifle y busques urgentemente ayuda psiquiátrica.

Y es que, por mucho que la globalización trate de convencernos de que hoy en día es posible hacer cualquier cosa desde cualquier parte del mundo, todos sabemos que no es así y que un Jamón Ibérico “made in Bangladesh” tiene menos futuro y glamour que el Dalai Lama como stripper.

Dicho esto y centrándonos en la industria musical, no podemos negar que los reyes del mambo son los británicos. No sé si porque desayunan alubias con kétchup o porque toman té como si lo fueran a prohibir, pero lo cierto es que tienen un paladar especialmente entrenado para detectar al instante todo lo que sepa, huela o suene a “pepinazos rompe pistas”. Y ya que hemos llegado a este punto, voy a hablarte de uno de estos sabuesos musicales ingleses llamado Colin Peters.

Mr Peters lleva más de 20 años pinchando en las mejores discotecas y festivales de Europa: desde Manumission (Privilege), Pacha o Space en Ibiza, al FIB de Benicassim o el Reading Festival.

También ha sido durante varias temporadas dj residente de Ibiza Rocks y Mallorca Rocks y desde 2005 lo es de Rock Nights. Vamos que el tipo está metido en todo fregao que lleve la palabra Rock, a excepción de Rocky VI. Pero a pesar de su impresionante curriculum vitae, más que “pincha discos” yo definiría al señor Peters como un auténtico minero de la música. Su auténtica pasión es sumergirse en las profundas e insondables minas del pop, rock, Indie Dance y la electrónica de ayer y hoy en busca de las pepitas de oro musicales más brillantes. Y para que todos los tesoros sonoros que va encontrando lleguen hasta tus orejas, desde hace seis años Colin presenta Rock Nights Radio, un espacio radiofónico semanal lleno de canciones, reportajes y originales entrevistas a dj y artistas como Dorian, David Kano, Nasty Mondays, Mystery Jets, Monarchy, Jeff Automatic…

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then we can affirm that you are a clear example of what in modern medicine is called: a fucking lunatic. In which case, I strongly advise you to stop reading this, cancel your subscription to the National Rifle Association and urgently seek psychiatric help.

As much as globalisation tries to convince us that nowadays it is possible to do anything, wherever you are, we all know that this isn’t true, and that an Iberian ham "made in Bangladesh" has less future and glamour than The Dalai Lama as a stripper.

After letting that thought sink in, we can’t deny that the Mambo Kings of music are the British. I do not know if it’s because they eat baked beans or drink tea as if it is about to be banned, but the truth is that they have a specially trained nose to detect instantly everything that smells like a “bloody big hit”. To prove my point I’m going to talk about one of these English music sleuths, whose name is Colin Peters.

Mr Peters has been playing for more than 20 years in the best clubs and festivals in Europe: from Manumission (Privilege), Pacha and Space in Ibiza, to FIB Beniscassim and Reading Festival. He was also resident DJ at Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks, and since 2005 is resident DJ at Rock Nights. Let's say that the guy is involved in everything that carries the word “rock”, with the exception of Rocky VI. But despite his impressive curriculum vitae, I would describe him more as a “musical miner” than a "disc jockey”. His real passion is to immerse himself in the deep and unfathomable mines of pop, rock, indie dance and electronica, from yesterday and today, in search of the brightest musical gold nuggets. These are polished off and presented each week on his weekly radio show, Rock Nights Radio.

On air since 2012, it has also featured interviews with the likes of Dorian, David Kano, Nasty Mondays, Mystery Jets, Monarchy and Jeff Automatic, among a host of national and international guests.

Four years before a Rolls Royce transported his lifeless body to the Harrow Road cementary, Freddie Mercury performed in KU discotheque one of the songs that was heard at his funeral. It was Barcelona, the song that came about as a result of the Queen singer’s obsession with the soprano Montserrat Caballé. Mercury loved opera, and he loved the voice of the diva from Barcelona the most. The song was used as the anthem of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 and the two singers began a brief but intense friendship. Before dying, the leader of Queen had time to promote the single in Ibiza, the island where the man from Zanzibar, visited regularly thanks to his friendship with Tony Pikes.

There are few stories more bizarre than the one that connects Nina Hagen with Ibiza. The German vocalist got married on the island in 1987. However it was by no means a normal wedding. It was a complete punk rock wedding and the groom was anything but ordinary. He was a 17-year old teenager called Iroquois and he was the son of hippies who had made the island their home. Nina Hagen was 14 years older than Iroquois but this was no impediment for them to go to the altar together, with Iroquois sporting a huge, red dyed, Mohican hairstyle. Cuatro años antes de que un Rolls Royce transportara su cuerpo sin vida al cementerio de Harrow Road, Freddy Mercury interpretó en la discoteca KU una de las canciones que precisamente sonó en su funeral. Fue Barcelona, el fruto de la obsesión del cantante de Queen hacia la soprano Montserrat Caballé. Mercury amaba el canto lírico y entre todas las divas de la ópera estaba encandilado con la voz de la barcelonesa. El tema que sirvió como himno para los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992 fue la excusa para que comenzaran una breve pero intensa amistad. Antes del morir el líder de Queen tuvo tiempo de promocionar un single que les uniría a Ibiza irremediablemente, una isla a la que el de Zanzíbar era asiduo gracias a su amistad con Tony Pikes.

Christa Pägen nació en Colonia en 1938. Cuando llegó a la veintena, aterrizó en Estados Unidos y se convirtió en la musa de toda una generación. Nico, como se la conocía artísticamente, fue modelo y cantautora. Poseía una arrebatadora belleza teutona y una voz que encandiló a la Velvet Underground. Con John Cale y Lou Reed grabó un disco lleno de mágicas y descarnadas canciones que, en aquel 1967, anunció lo que estaba por venir en el universo rockero durante los setenta. Nico desarrollaría después su carrera en solitario, trasladándose a vivir a Ibiza. Amante de la naturaleza, se inspiró en el ambiente ibicenco para componer y recorría el campo a lomos de una bicicleta. Era una paisana más. Hasta que en el verano de 1988 (curiosamente, solo cuatro días antes de que James Brown actuara en KU) sufrió un infarto mientras pedaleaba por los caminos de la isla. Al caer se golpeó la cabeza y el golpe provocó un derrame cerebral. Fue hospitalizada pero los médicos no pudieron hacer nada para salvar su vida.

Nico, as she was artistically known, was a model and singer-songwriter. She was a stunningly beautiful German woman, whose voice is forever linked with The Velvet Underground. With John Cale and Lou Reed, she recorded an album full of stark and controversial songs that was released in 1967. It was one of the most inuential albums of all time, and was a reference for the rock universe in the 1970s. Aer this album Nico developed her career as a solo artist and moved to Ibiza to live. A nature lover, she was inspired by Ibiza’s ambience both for composing or simply rider her bike through the countryside. She was just another person on the island. In summer 1988 (curiously just four days aer James Brown performed in KU) she suered a heart attack while she was ride her bicycle. She hit her head when she fell causing a brain haemorrhage. She was taken to hospital but the doctors couldn’t do anything to save her life.

Pocas historias existen tan estrambóticas como la que une a Nina Hagen con Ibiza. La vocalista alemana se casó en la isla en 1987. Pero no fue una boda al uso ni mucho menos. La estética de los invitados parecía sacada de un muestrario de moda punk y el novio era de todo menos ordinario. Iroqua se llamaba el chico que se casó con Nina. Era hijo de hippies establecidos en la isla y tenía en el momento de contraer matrimonio apenas 17 años. Nina Hagen le sacaba 14 años pero es no fue impedimento para que acudieran juntos al altar, él sin camiseta y con una cresta kilométrica, ella con el pelo teñido de rojo. El enlace terminó con una esta salvaje sobre la arena de Benirràs.

El salto a la fama de George Michael siempre estará vinculado con Ibiza. El divo del pop era apenas un postadolescente cuando formó Wham! junto a Andrew Ridgeley. Club Tropicana se tituló el primer hit de su carrera. Y el vídeoclip se rodó en Ibiza. La mayor parte de las escenas en las instalaciones hotel Pikes, vinculado desde entonces al star system musical al hacer como suyas las dos palabras más coreadas de Club Tropicana: “Fiesta. Forever”. La imagen de George Michael cantando sobre un otador en la piscina del hotel forma parte de la iconograa del pop.

George Michael’s rise to stardom will always be linked with Ibiza. The pop divo had barely le his teenage years behind when he formed Wham! together with Andrew Ridgeley. Club Tropicana was one of their rst big hits and the video for the song was recorded in Ibiza. A large part of the scenes were shot in Pikes Hotel, linking it forever with musical celebrities, and leaving pop’s most iconic images: George Michael oating about on a lilo in his Speedoes and shakes in the hotel’s pool.

1. Hola, Ben y Mike, ¿Qué tal? Supongo que os estaréis recuperando de vuestra gira por Europea y Americana. ¿Habéis podido hacer un descanso?

Hola, estamos muy bien, gracias por preguntar. Acabamos de regresar de nuestro primer viaje a Sudamérica, donde tocamos por primera vez. Siempre mola tocar. Tuvimos un poco de tiempo libre a principios de 2018 pero estamos tan entusiasmados con hacer directos y música nueva que volvemos otra vez al curro.

2. Después de haber visto a Royal Blood tocando en Ibiza Rocks y Barcelona el año pasado, todavía estoy sorprendido de cómo solo dos chicos pueden crear un muro de sonido tan potente. ¿Cómo lo hacéis?

Para crear ese sonido, primero tienes que aprender a construir. Necesitas las herramientas adecuadas y las ganas de desarrollarte y practicar tu oficio. El secreto es que tanto Mike como yo hemos aprendido a hacerlo juntos, y esta simbiosis, hace que el resultado suene más grande de lo que la gente pueda llegar a imaginar.

3. Con vuestro segundo álbum, How Did We Get We Dark, habéis acabado por completo con el temido Síndrome del Segundo Disco. ¿Fue una decisión consciente el cambiar algunas cosas con respecto al primer álbum?

Definitivamente, no queríamos hacer “Royal Blood 2”. Queremos expandirnos como compositores y músicos, para eso debíamos avanzar hacia lo desconocido. Aún así, todavía queríamos ser fieles a nosotros mismos y al sonido característico de nuestra banda, que proviene directamente de Rock n ‘Roll.

4. ¿Cómo fue vuestra experiencia en Ibiza el año pasado? ¿Fue la primera vez que estuvisteis aquí?

Nos divertimos mucho en Ibiza, una isla de fiesta sin dudas. (Ben) Regresé un par de meses después para un poco más de “festuki”.

5. Después de la siguiente etapa de vuestra gira mundial, ¿cuáles son los planes?

Más de todo, que siga la fiesta. Pues más giras, más discos, más cachondeo.

6. ¿Tener éxito es todo lo que imaginasteis?

(Ben) No te voy a mentir, el éxito es muy satisfactorio para cualquiera. Ser capaz de hacer algo que amas y creer en ello y tener el apoyo y el amor de tanta gente mientras hago mi trabajo es una buena sensación, supongo.

1. Hi Ben and Mike, how are you? I guess you are recovering from the exertions of your European and Americas Tour. Have you been able to take a break?

Hello, we’re very well, thank you for asking. We’ve just got back from our first trip to South America, where we played for the first time. It never gets old. We had a bit of time off at the beginning of 2018, but we’re so excited about playing shows and making new music that we love getting back to work.

2. Having seen Royal Blood perform at Ibiza Rocks and Barcelona last year, I’m still amazed at how just 2 guys can create such a massive wall of sound. How do you do it?

To build a wall of sound, you have to first learn how to build. You need the right tools to do the job, and the desire to develop and practice your trade. The secret is that both Mike & I have learnt to do this together, and the combination between us and our parts can make it sound bigger than people can imagine.

3. Your sophomore album, How Did We Get So Dark, you took the sword to the dreaded Second Album Syndrome and absolutely skewered it. Was it a conscious decision to change some things from your first album?

Definitely, we didn’t want to do “Royal Blood 2”. We want to expand as songwriters and musicians, so to do that you have to move forward into the unknown. Saying this we still wanted to stay true to ourselves and our bands core sound, which comes from straight up Rock n’ Roll.

4. How was your Ibiza experience last year? Was it the first time you’ve been here?

We had a lot of fun in Ibiza, a party island for sure. (Ben) I returned later in the year to create a little more carnage.

5. After the next leg of your World Tour what are your plans?

More of this, let’s keep this party rolling. More tours, more recording, more partying.

6. Is being successful all you imagined it to be?

(Ben) I’m not gonna lie, success is very satisfying for anyone. To be able to do something I love, believe in and have the support and love from so many other people while doing it is a good feeling I suppose.

Al igual que los grandes clubs de fútbol miman a su cantera, Rock Nights Magazine quiere echar un cable a las bandas locales ibicencas. Y qué mejor manera de hacerlo que entrevistando a seis de ellas: The Frigolos , Quin Delibat!, Uncle Sal, Ryser, Billy Flamingos y Windrose.

Pero la fama cuesta amigas, así que hemos decidido someter a estas jóvenes (y no tan jóvenes) promesas de la escena musical payesa a las cuestiones más temidas y odiadas por todo músico “amateur”. Esas cuatro preguntas a las que todo aspirante a Rock Star tiene que hacer frente en bodas, comuniones, nochebuenas y demás campos de batalla familiares:

It surprises me to be asked a question with so opposing terms as hippie and work, but I’ll try to be concentrated and don’t get nervous. We’ll never stop playing, nor even if we have no idea about how to behave like a hippie.

Like the big football clubs pamper their reserve of young players, Rock Nights Magazine wants to give the Ibiza local bands a helping hand. And what better way to do this than interviewing six of them: The Frigolos, Quin Delibat!, Uncle Sal, Ryser, Billy Flamingos and Windrose.

But fame has a price, my friends, so we have decided to ask these young (and not so young) promises of the payesa (peasant) musical scene the most feared and hated questions by any “amateur” musician. The four questions every candidate to be a Rock Star has to face in weddings, First Communions, Christmas Eve days and any other family battlegrounds: 1- But where have you found that strange name, my son?

2- And those long-haired friends of yours, where do they come from?

3- How do you call that strange music you play?

4- When are you going to stop behaving like hippies and will look for a real job?

THE FRIGOLOS

1. Queríamos caerle bien al robot de búsquedas de Google. Y que no lo entendiese casi ningún humano.

We wanted to be liked by Google searching engine. And that almost no human being could understand it.

2.¿Por qué lo preguntas? ¿Qué han hecho? Yo no los conozco de nada. De hecho, es la primera vez que los veo.

Why do you ask? What have they done? I don’t know them at all. Indeed, this is the first time I see them.

3. Hacemos brit-pop sin acento británico y cantamos sobre Tinder, sobre los viajes espaciales y sobre ligar con marcianos.

We play brit-pop without British accent and we sing about Tinder, about space travels and about pulling with Martians.

4. Uf, es que los trabajos de verdad están muy mal pagados…

Phew! Real jobs are really underpaid…

UNCLE SAL

1. Creo recordar que no estaba en plenitud de condiciones mentales, pero ahora mismo no quiero hurgar en el pasado. Puede que haya niños leyendo esto.

SHIT MONDAY, LEGENDARY MONDAY LUNES DE MIERDA, LUNES DE LEYENDA

Como bien dijo el famoso clarinetista neoyorkino Allan Stewart Königsberg (Woody Allen para sus enemigos): “El sexo solamente puede ser sucio si se hace bien”. Y es que por más que el mojigato siglo XXI se empeñe cada día en convertirnos en una sociedad cada vez más aséptica, predecible y pueril, todos sabemos que lo que de verdad mola es lo inmoral, lo salvaje, el sudor y el rock and roll. ¡Fuck yeah, coño!

Y si no que se lo pregunten a Sören Manzoni - Max Ochoa y Mauro Haller, tres descerebrados/ visionarios que en 2005 se sacaron de la manga una fiesta tan jodidamente obscena, sucia y maravillosa, que la policía en lugar de ir a cerrarles el garito fueron a hacerles la ola.

Pero volvamos a citar al gran Woody: “Si quieres hacer reír a Dios, cuéntale tus planes”. Ese fue precisamente el gran acierto de estos tiparracos, no contarle nada a Dios. Y no porque ellos tuvieran algo en contra de este simpático señor con barba y un cartabón sobre su cabeza, sino porque simplemente el plan era que no había plan... Todo comenzó como empiezan los grandes imperios, sin querer, cuando un día de esos tontos el responsable de la discoteca Fonfone en Barcelona les ofreció montar allí una pequeña fiesta los lunes por la noche. Sören - Max y Mauro, unos señores con más tiempo libre que el librero de Paris Hilton, decidieron aceptar la oferta y así nacieron los Nasty Mondays.

Sus aspiraciones iniciales eran igual de básicas e insignificantes que las de cualquier homo erectus que monta una barbacoa: que vengan tus cuatro colegas de siempre a gorronear birras y a ver si con un poco de suerte se dejan caer un par de rubias despistadas. Pues bien, no sé si finalmente fueron sus amigos, lo que sí sé es que en pocas semanas habían cuatriplicado la tasa de suecas bailando por metro cuadrado permitida por la ONU y tuvieron que mudarse a un local mayor. Hoy, 13 años después, el desmadre continúa en la mítica sala Apolo de Barcelona, donde cada fucking lunes del año (sin excepción) acuden sus cuatro amigos y más de 2.000 desmelenados seres humanos más.

Venga Woody arráncate con otra de tus frasecitas para terminar: “No conozco la clave del éxito, pero la clave del fracaso es tratar de complacer a todo el mundo”. Pues eso, que haciendo lo que les ha dado la real gana y pinchando rock and roll, los Nasty Mondays se han convertido en unas putas estrellas de rock. Ya, ya sé que nunca han sacado ni sacaran un disco, pero se merecen una estrella bien gorda en el paseo de la fama por haber convertido mierda en leyenda, o lo que es lo mismo, transformar los jodidos y aburridos lunes barceloneses en la día más legendario, macarra y divertido de la semana.

And it’s not because they have anything against this nice gentleman with a beard, but simply because the plan was that there was no plan. It started as all the great empires begin, i.e unintentionally, when the manager of the Fonfone nightclub in Barcelona offered them to host a small party there on Monday nights. Soren - Max y Mauro, took him up on his offer and Nasty Mondays was born.

Their initial aspirations were just as basic and insignificant as those of any Homo erectus who builds a barbecue: hope that a couple of mates pop down to scrounge beers, and to see if they can get off with a couple of clueless blondes. Well, I do not know if their friends went, but what I do know is that in a few weeks they had quadrupled the rate of Swedish lady dancing per square metre allowed by the UN, and eventually had to move to a larger venue. Today, 13 years later, the chaos continues in the mythical Apolo club in Barcelona, ​​where every fucking Monday of the year (without exception) their four friends and 2,000 other human beings come.

By doing whatever they want and playing rock and roll, Nasty Mondays have become fucking rock stars. Lo siento mucho amigas, pero hay cosas de esta sociedad moderna que por mucho que me las expliquen, yo no alcanzo a entenderlas. Por ejemplo: ¿cómo es posible que alguien en Albacete le mande un WhastsApp a otro alguien de Sidney y este lo reciba tan solo una milésima de segundo después de haberlo enviado?. Pero ojo, que la cosa no acaba ahí, porque alguna vez mi madre me ha respondido a un mensaje incluso antes de que yo lo hubiese escrito.

Si, ya sé que la ciencia tiene una respuesta para todo (menos para lo de mi madre), pero para un señor de pueblo como yo, estas cosas son y siempre serán magia negra.

Otro gran enigma de la humanidad que me desvela por las noches es: “el misterioso caso de las fiestas de aniversario del Fabuloso”. Me explico: el Fabuloso es un bar que, los no menos fabulosos Silvia Superstar y Edu por las Noches abrieron en noviembre de 2009 en el madrileño barrio de Malasaña. Entonces, ¿alguien me puede explicar por qué demonios el cumpleaños del local se celebra en agosto, en vez de en noviembre y en Ibiza, en lugar de en Madrid?.

Para llegar hasta el fondo del asunto, hace unas semanas decidí reunirme con carácter de urgencia con Silvia Superstar. La cita tuvo lugar en la piscina del hotel Dorado en Ibiza y duró exactamente 2,26 segundos, el tiempo que Silvia necesitó para dar una maravillosa, sencilla y aplastante respuesta a mi pregunta: “¡Pues porque sí!”. Y es que, al igual que un vasco nace donde le da la gana, la gente fabulosa celebra sus aniversarios donde y cuando les parece.

Este año la fecha elegida será el 17 de agosto y el sarao (con pool party included, baby) tendrá lugar a partir de las 17h. en el mítico hotel Pikes, un auténtico santuario del rock and roll donde gente como Freddie Mercury, George Michael o el mismísimo Julio Iglesias perpetraron sus más célebres desmadres erótico-festivos.

Alaska y Mario, Carlos Areces, Vinila Von Bismark, Lola Von Dage, Colin Peters o el mismísimo Tony Pikes (el Hugh Hefner de Ibiza), son solo alguno de los personajes abonados a esta fiesta, considerada para muchos como las más divertida, buenrrollera e irreverente de la Ibiza… Y decir esto en la isla de las fiestas te aseguro que no es moco de pavo.

Así que ya estás agarrando tu Smartphone y mandando un WhatsApp a tus amigos de Albacete, Sidney y más allá, con la fecha y hora del 8º aniversario del Fabuloso. Ah, y no olvides recordarles la única norma protocolaria para poder asistir a la fiesta: “haz lo que te salga del culo, siempre y cuando sea jodidamente divertido”.

Sorry guys / gals but there are certain things in our so called modern society that no matter how many times they explain it to me, I still don’t get. For example, how is it possible that someone from StokeOn-Trent can send a WhatsApp to someone in Sydney, and this second person receives it a millisecond after it has been sent? Let me explain, El Fabuloso is a bar by the no less fabulous Silvia Superstar and Edu por las Noches, which opened November 2010 in the Madrid neighbourhood of Malasaña. So, can someone explain to me why the hell the bar’s anniversary party is held each August in Ibiza instead of Madrid in November?

To get to the bottom of this conundrum I decided to hold an urgent meeting with Silvia Superstar by the Dorado Ibiza Hotel pool. The meeting lasted exactly 2 and a half seconds, the time Silvia needed to say “Just because!” And in the end, just as a cat does what it wants, the Fabuloso gang celebrate their anniversaries whenever and wherever they please.

This year’s Fabuloso anniversary will be held on the…… August (with pool party included baby) from 5 p.m. in the legendary Pikes Hotel, an authentic rock ‘n’ roll sanctuary where people like Freddie Mercury, George Michael and Julio Iglesias partied hard… very hard.

Alaska and Mario, Carlos Areces, Vinila Von Bismark, Lola Von Dage, Colin Peters and Mr Tony Pikes (the Hugh Hefner of Ibiza) are just some of the characters you’ll find at this party, considered by many to be the funniest, coolest and silliest in Ibiza. Vamos a hablar claro de una vez por todas, lo que mola del mundo del rock and roll es ser un Rolling Stone y lo demás son mierdas (madre mía, qué radical estoy hoy. Tal vez no fue tan buena idea desayunar churros con Thunder Bitch). La putada es que los cuatro puestos de trabajo existentes en Sus Satánicas Majestades S.A. están ya ocupados y además son vitalicios. Así pues, sabiendo que tienes más posibilidades de ser hijo de Julio Iglesias que un Stone, lo máximo a lo que puedes aspirar como rockero es a conseguir un contrato por horas en Sus Satánicos Teloneros S.L. Pues bien, los últimos afortunados en conseguir el puesto fueron Los Zigarros, quienes el 27 de septiembre de 2017 abrieron el show de Mick Jagger and company en Barcelona. Por esto y porque su música me gusta más que a un tonto una gorra de lado, he decidido entrevistar a Ovidi Tormo, cantante de la banda.

Pero ojo, no lo voy a hacer solo, ya que para no ser menos que los Rolling yo también me he traído a unos colegas míos de teloneros: Diego Armando Maradona: Pibes, el último long-play de ustedes se llama A todo que sí y está producido por Carlos Raya… ¿Qué hay de lo mío?

Ovidi: Hola Pablo, entiendo tu curiosidad y sin duda yo preguntaría lo mismo, pero conocer a los Stones fue algo difícil de ubicar y de entender. Nos colocaron en un photocall y nos dijeron que en cualquier momento aparecerían los cuatro y así fue. De repente veo venir a Charlie Watts para estrecharme la mano, después Mick, después Ronnie y por ultimo Keith. Fueron muy amables y nos preguntaron por nuestro concierto. Se comportaron con naturalidad y elegancia. Ron dijo “Zigarroussss!!!!” y se fueron...

Let’s speak frankly for once and for all, what’s really cool about the rock and roll world is to be a Rolling Stone and the rest is a shit (good heavens, today I’m quite radical! Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to have churros (long fritters made with flour and water) with Thunder Bitch for breakfast). The real bugger is that the four posts existing in Their Satanic Majesties P.L.C. are already covered and moreover they’re for life. Thus, knowing that you have more chances to be another son of Julio Iglesias than being a Stone, the most you can aspire to as a rock musician is to get a time-work in Their Satanic Support Band P.L.C. Well, the last lucky ones to get the job were Los Zigarros (in English: The Cigarettes) who, on 27th September 2017, opened the show of Mick Jagger and company in Barcelona. For this, and because I’m very keen on their music, I’ve decided to interview Ovidi Tormo, the lead singer.

Pablo Burgués: How was the moment of meeting the Stones in person? (Take your time to reply, this is the last question and we have all night ahead).

Ovidi: Hi Pablo, I understand your curiosity and undoubtedly I would ask the same, but to meet the Stones was something difficult to locate and understand. We were placed at a photocall and were told that at any time the four of them would appear, and it was so. Estilo…Rockanrolla por supuesto! En cuanto a tattooar, no me gusta encasillarme en ninguno en concreto. Creo que en un tatuador es importante tocar todos los palos para cubrir al máximo las necesidades de los clientes.

3. ¿Qué te parece el montar un estudio de tatuajes en un hotel en Ibiza, que también tiene una galería de arte y la piscina más rosa de la isla? ¿Estos de Concept no están un poco zumbados?

Me parece la bomba! Ya que es algo que aquí aún no se ve demasiado, además con mucho rollo y buen gusto.

Si ellos están un poco zumbados, yo soy uno más 4. ¿Te veremos también en Rock Nights y Dorado Live Shows?

Claro ¿qué mejor forma de tatuar que con musicón de fondo?

My style is... Rockanrolla of course! As for tattooing, I do not like to classify myself in any in particular. I think for every tattoo artist it is important to deal with different styles to cover the needs of the clients as much as possible.

3. What do you think about setting up a tattoo studio in a hotel in Ibiza, which also has an art gallery and the pinkest pool on the island? Are not those guys of Concept a bit nuts?

I think they are fuckin cool! Is something original, done with a very good taste.

THE MAN WHO WAS THERE ´ ´´ ´ JEROME FERRIERE, EL HOMBRE QUE ESTUVO ALLÍ

Once upon a time two crazy professors called Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle created an entertainment behemoth called Ibiza Rocks, and the rest as they say is history.

Even though Andy and Dawn’s creation (half hotel, half music festival) complied with all the island’s noise regulations, when new and unrealistic sound limits for shows and concerts came into force, Ibiza Rocks was forced into a tough decision, i.e. stop doing concerts or closing the hotel. Logically they chose the first option and 2018 sees Ibiza Rocks become the home of pool parties with huge artists such as Rudimental and Craig David, however there will be NO MORE ROCK AND ROLL BABY! Conclusion: Even though San Antonio seems the same, it will be different without that weekly dose of live concerts. (I’m a Drama Queen when I wanna be.)

Stepping back into time, Ibiza Rocks converted San Antonio into the fucking Mediterranean mecca of rock for over a decade. Its stage hosted the crème de la crème, a veritable indie lovers wet dream including: New Order, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, LCD Soundsystem, The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Ed Sheeran, Primal Scream, Franz Ferdinand and The Vaccines.

Érase una vez una pareja de profesores chiflados llamados Andy McKay y Dawn Hindle, quienes en 2005 crearon una especie de Transformer del ocio llamado Ibiza Rocks Hotel. Y todo lo que vino después ya es historia…

Si amigas, porque a pesar de que Andy y Dawn aseguran que su extraña criatura (mitad hotel, mitad festival de música) cumple con todas las normativas de ruidos habidas y por haber en el primer mundo y Portugal, lo cierto es que la nueva y poco realista normativa de espectáculos de las islas baleares ha obligado a Ibiza Rocks a elegir entre susto o muerte. O lo que es lo mismo: dejar de hacer grandes conciertos de rock o cerrar el garito. La opción elegida ha sido la primera, así que a partir de ahora podremos seguir disfrutando de las divertidísimas pool parties que organiza el hotel y donde este año actuarán grandes artistas como Rudimental o Craig David, pero eso si, NO MORE ROCK AND ROLL BABY! Conclusión: Que a partir de hoy, Sant Antoni de Portmany puede que siga pareciendo la misma ciudad de siempre, pero ya nunca volverá a ser igual (válgame Dios, qué Drama Queen me pongo cuando quiero).

Pero es que es verdad, porque durante más de una década Ibiza Rocks convirtió a Sant Antoni en la fucking meca mediterránea del pop-rock… Bueno, sí, ya sé que el Mediterráneo es un mar muy grande y que en sus costas se celebran festivales mucho más importantes (como el FIB de Benicassim o el Primavera Sound de Barcelona), pero tampoco te tomes todo lo que digo al pie de la letra coño… En fin, meca o no meca, lo cierto es que por aquí pasaron bandas muuuuuuy gordas como: New Order, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, LCD Soundsystem, The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Ed Sheeran, Primal Scream, Franz Ferdinand o The Vaccines entre muchos, muchos otros. ¿Y qué les quedará a nuestros nietos de todo aquello? Pues mil y una batallitas contadas por su abuelo “el rockero” y un libro de fotografía bien grande y gordo: Ibiza Rocks, by Jérôme Ferrière.

Jérôme, un fotógrafo y ser humano francés afincado en Ibiza, es el responsable de publicaciones tan míticas como Ibiza Portraits, el libro de retratos donde aparecen los rostros más influyentes de la vida social ibicenca y que tiene el honor de ser la 2ª publicación más vista de la isla de todos los tiempos (tan solo superada por el chat de WhatsApp que avisa de los controles de alcoholemia).

Su nuevo trabajo es una retrospectiva con la que el fotógrafo pretende inmortalizar los doce años de conciertos vividos en Ibiza Rocks. Y para conseguir atrapar toda la fuerza y energía de los shows, la mayoría de las fotografías fueron tomados en el backstage, minutos antes o después de que los artistas pisaran el escenario. El resultado es un impresionante libro de más de cien instantáneas en blanco y negro, imágenes llenas de adrenalina, sudor y rock and roll de artistas (y no tan artistas) como Liam Gallagher, Kylie Minogue, Mr. Nice, Lily Allen, Happy Mondays, Boy George o Marky Ramone.

Ah y además el libro cumple con las normativas de ruidos más exigentes conocidas hasta la fecha.

Así que incluso en las islas baleares puedes ojearlo sin miedo a que te lo cierren.

This Frenchman is a renowned photographer and long time resident in Ibiza, where another of his books, Ibiza Portraits, shows Ibiza’s most influential characters, and has the honour of being Ibiza’s 2nd most seen publication of all time (only beaten by the WhatsApp group that warns about police traffic stops for drink driving around the island).

This new book is a retrospective, where the photographer captures 12 years of live concerts in Ibiza Rocks. In order to capture the raw energy of the shows, the majority of the photos were taken in the backstage areas, minutes before or after the artists hit the stage. The result is an impressive book filled with more than 100 black and white photos, images full of adrenaline, sweat and rock ‘n’ roll. It is a loving look back at artists who not only played live but who also enjoyed hanging out at Ibiza Rocks including: Liam Gallagher, Kylie Minogue, Mr Nice, Lily Allen, Happy Mondays, Boy George and Marky Ramone.

THE STORY BEHIND THE IBIZA LEGEND / LA HISTORIA DETRÁS DE LA LEYENDA DE IBIZA 1. Hola Tony, el libro sobre su increíble vida, Mr Pikes, ya está a la venta. Como sabemos, su nombre está vinculado para siempre con el legendario Hotel Pikes. ¿Cómo se topó con esta ‘finca’ abandonada? ¡Estaba buscando un lugar con aire fresco en los 70! Todos los apartamentos que se estaban construyendo no tenían sol, el agente inmobiliario dijo: “Mire Sr. Pike si se sienta en esta terraza de 2 a 4 de la tarde tendrá sol”. Eso no era lo que buscaba, quería sol todo el tiempo. Estaba en Santa Eulalia y vi una oficina inmobiliaria improvisada, y en el mitad de la ventana había una oferta especial de una finca abandonada. Un chico de la oficina me llevó y allí estaba, un edificio de 500 años de antigüedad. Nadie había vivido allí desde hacía 15 años y yo quería hacer un trato al respecto, a pesar de que necesitaba gran cantidad de trabajo para ponerla al día, así que conseguí que el agente inmobiliario volviera con el propietario y descubriera cual era su precio mas bajo. Hice una oferta, menos mal que la aceptó, y me puse a trabajar. La cantidad de trabajo que necesitaba este sitio era inmenso.

2. La 40ª fiesta de cumpleaños de Freddie Mercury celebrada en Pikes el 5 de septiembre de 1987 ha sido descrita como “el ejemplo más increíble de exceso que la isla mediterránea haya visto jamás”. Es la fiesta a la que todos desearían haber asistido. ¿Cuán excesivo fue?

Fue verdaderamente una fiesta de excesos, había de todo, teníamos bandas, gente guapa y música selecta gracias a Freddie. Le dije que no le defraudaría y que no le quería de una manera sexual, pero que como individuo era el hombre más fascinante y con más talento que conocí jamás, y haría todo lo que estuviera en mi mano para que fuera la mejor fiesta. Lo hice, fue la mejor y todavía se recuerda así.

Como dije, fueron muchos años de trabajo duro para construir Pikes, y cuando finalmente se puso en marcha, apareció un hombre preguntando por el jefe. Dije: “Yo soy el jefe” y él dijo: “¿quién es el verdadero jefe?”, Le respondí, “¿a quién estás buscando?” Y él dijo, “a Tony Pikes”, y yo respondí “soy Tony Pikes”. ¿qué esperabas que llevase puesto un maldito smoking con pajarita? ¿Quién eres tú? ¿Qué es lo que quieres?

“Me dijo, “que soy Freddie Mercury.” Le dije: “Nunca he oído hablar de Freddie Mercury.” Él me dijo, “¡eres un tipo bastante extraño!”. Y dije, “¡tú aparentemente tienes la misma reputación que yo!”’ Y así fue como comenzó una bonita amistad.

Cuando llegó el momento de organizar su 40 cumpleaños en Pikes, Freddie quería una réplica de la catedral de la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona, hecha en la misma ciudad y traída en jet privado el día de su cumpleaños.

Sin embargo, recibí una llamada de alguien que decía “¡Tony hay una emergencia, el pastel está jodido!” El avión hizo un mal aterrizaje y cuando abrieron la puerta de carga la tarta se cayó a pedazos. Le dije: “la fiesta tiene que suceder sin problemas, así que hablé con mi chef y le dije que tenía que hacer el pastel”. Él dijo, “¿qué tipo de tarta?” Y yo dije, “un puto gran pastel, hay 300 invitados”, así que él comenzó a fabricar un enorme bizcocho. Cuando estuvo listo, cuatro hombres la llevaron a la terraza, con las letras de la canción de Freddie y Montserrat Caballé: “Barcelona” en letras de chocolate por encima. No se permitieron cámaras en la fiesta, pero logré colar una en mi bolsillo una e hice una foto. ¡Entonces los cuatro hombres agarraron a mi secretaria Penny y la lanzaron por el aire y ella aterrizó en el medio del pastel con su vestido nuevo de seda! ¡Todos se echaron a reír,fue una anécdota muy divertida de la fiesta! ¡No estoy seguro de dónde está la foto, pero fue jodidamente graciosa!

Le prometí a Freddie que sería la fiesta más memorable de la historia, que permanecería en la memoria mucho después de que hubiera pasado. Entonces aún no sabía que tenía SIDA. 3. Como la mayoría de la gente sabe, la canción de Wham!, Club Tropicana fue grabada allí, se llevó tan bien con la banda que le pidieron que interpretara un pequeño papel en el video, una vez más demostrando lo encantador que es usted, ¿siempre ha sido así?

Desafortunadamente sí! No me criaron encantador, ¡pero sí amo a las mujeres! ¡Amo y respeto a las mujeres!

Hay ciertas adicciones en el mundo, puedes ser un drogadicto o un adicto al alcohol, no quiero ser nada de eso, soy una adicto a las mujeres, siempre pongo mis brazos alrededor de una chica guapa y digo: Soy amable contigo, pero no estoy siendo amable contigo como persona, lo estoy siendo porque quiero quitarte las bragas y hacerte el amor.

Con Club Tropicana, no había nada planificado, estaba trabajando como un esclavo en Pikes y un tipo vino y me dijo “soy Simon Napier Bell, y trabajo con una agencia publicitaria que busca locales para rodar videos para las próximas estrellas del rock y el pop, ¡estoy llevando a un nuevo dúo llamado Wham! Han tenido un éxito llamado Bad Boys, que les a hecho famosos, necesitan un lugar para hacer un video llamado Club Tropicana y pensé en Pikes. Y dijo: “Hay una parte de la canción que dice que las bebidas son gratis, ¡aunque eres famoso por tus altos precios!”. Le dije,” eso es una chorrada, no son altos, la gente paga por pasar un buen rato aquí y están dispuestos a pagar “.

4. Uno de mis lugares favoritos en el Hotel Pikes es la recepción, me encanta ver sus fotos con las celebridades que han pasado por estas puertas. El hotel sigue siendo uno de los sitios favoritos en Ibiza para los famosos, que es lo que tiene en comparación con otros lugares de Ibiza?

La razón es que está construida con mi propio amor, reparto paz e igualdad, no soy un racista o un político, estoy dejando claro mi desacuerdo con la manera que el mundo da la bienvenida a cualquiera. A mí no me importa el dinero, ni la orientación sexual ni nada. ¡Es la gente que se queda en Pikes la que hace único a Pikes!

1. Hi Tony, the book about your incredible life, Mr Pikes, is out now on sale. As we know your name is forever linked with the legendary Pikes Hotel How did you come across the abandoned ‘finca’?

In the 70’s I was looking for a place with fresh air! All the apartments that were being built didn’t have any sun, the estate agent said, “Look Mr Pike if you sit on this terrace from 2 – 4 in the afternoon you’ll get sun”.

That’s not what I was after, I wanted complete sun all the time. I was in Santa Eulalia and I saw an impromptu real estate office, and in the middle of the window was a special offer for an abandoned finca, A guy from the office drove me up there and there it was, a 500-year old building. In Spain a ‘finca’ is a farm estate with all the surrounding land. Nobody had lived in it for 15 years and I wanted to do a deal on it even though it needed an enormous amount of work doing to it, so I got the estate agent to go back to the owner and find out what his bottom price was. I made an offer which was happily accepted, and I got to work. You would not believe the amount of work it took to get that place into shape, it was immense.

2. Freddie Mercury’s 40th birthday party held at Pikes on 5th September 1987 has been described as “the most incredible example of excess the Mediterranean island has ever seen”. It’s THE party that everyone wishes they had attended. Just how excessive was it?

It was truly excessive, it had everything: bands, beautiful people and excellent music, all because of Freddie. I told Freddie I wouldn’t let him down and that I love him, not in a sexual way but as an individual, I said “you’re the most fascinating, talented man I’ve ever met in my life and I’ll do everything in my power to make it the best”. I did that, it was the best and it is still remembered as the best.

As I said it took me many years of slogging away to build Pikes, and when it was finally up and running a man turns up asking for the boss. I said, “I’m the boss” and he said, “ who’s the real boss?” I replied, “who are you looking for’” and he said, “Tony Pikes”, and I replied “I’m Tony Pikes, what do you expect that I’d be in a fucking lounge suit with a bow tie! Who are you, what do you want?” He said I’m Freddie Mercury” I said, “I’ve never heard of Freddie Mercury” He said, “you’re quite a strange fellow!” And I said, “you’ve apparently got the same kind of reputation yourself!” And that’s how a beautiful friendship started.

When it came round to organising his 40th birthday at Pikes, Freddie wanted a replica cake of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, made in the same city and brought over by private jet the day of his birthday, However I got a call from someone say, “Tony there’s been an emergency, the cake is fucked!” The jet made a bad landing and when they opened the cargo door a huge pile of cake goo fell out. I said, “the party can’t go without a hitch, so I met my chef and said that you have to make the cake”. He said, “what kind of cake?” and I said, “a big fucking one, there are 300 guests”, so he got on with making a huge sponge cake. When it was ready four men carried it up to the terrace, with the lyrics of Freddie and Montserrat Caballe’s song “Barcelona” on top in chocolate piping. No cameras were allowed at the party, but I managed to sneak one in my pocket and took a photo of it. Then the four men grabbed my secretary Penny and threw her up in the air and she landed in the middle of the cake with her new silk dress! Everyone burst out laughing, a very amusing anecdote of the party! Not sure where the photo is but it was bloody funny!

I promised Freddie that it would be the most memorable party ever, one that will live on in the memory long after you’ve gone. Little did I know he had AIDS. 3. As most people know, Wham’s song, Club Tropicana was filmed there, you got on so well with the band that they asked you to play a small part in the video, once again showing how charming you are, have you always been this way?

Unfortunately yes! I wasn’t brought up charming, but I do love the ladies! I do love and respect women! There are certain addictions in the world, you can be a drug addict or and alcohol addict, I don’t want to be anything of those things, I’m a woman addict, I always put my arms around a pretty girl and say I’m being nice to you but I’m not being nice to you as person, but I’m being nice because I want to get in your knickers and make love to you.

Anyway, with Club Tropicana, I didn’t plan it, I was slaving away at Pikes and this guy came and said “I’m Simon Napier Bell, I’m a location scout and I work for a publicity company and we work with upcoming rock and pop stars, I’m handling a new duo called Wham! They’ve had one hit called Bad Boys that’s made them famous, they need a place to make a video called Club Tropicana and I thought of Pikes”. He continued “There’s a line in the song which says that drinks are free. even though you are renowned for your high prices!” I told him, “that’s bollocks they aren’t high, people pay for having a good time here and are prepared to pay”.

4. One of my favourite places in Pikes Hotel is the reception, I love looking at the photos of yourself with the celebrities that have passed through the doors. The hotel is still one of the top Ibiza haunts for the famous to hangout, what makes it so special in comparison to other Ibiza venues?

The reason is it’s built with my own love, I’m selling peace and equality I’m not a racist or a politician, I’m stating my disapproval at the way the world is by making everyone welcome. I don’t care about money, sexual orientation or anything. Pikes is unique because of the people who stay there!

Zero Suite Residencies As promotion for young and avant-garde creation, Art Paradiso will start its Zero Suite Residencies, a programme of short artistic residences that will bring outstanding international artists and creators to the island.

Dirigido por el artista y comisario Iñaki Domingo y la realizadora Diana Kunst, presentará propuestas de arte urbano, performances, una galería de arte instalada dentro del propio hotel y un programa de microrresidencias artísticas.

Los huéspedes podrán dejarse envolver por el arte en un ambiente único con las creaciones de artistas contemporáneos que decorarán cada una de las Art Rooms. Asimismo tendrán oportunidad de profundizar en las tendencias de vanguardia gracias a la biblioteca Art Library especializada en arte contemporáneo, que estará a su disposición permanente para deleitarse en las salas del hotel.

Art Rooms.

Como parte del programa artístico del hotel, se establecerá una colaboración con varios creadores contemporáneos que podrán exponer su obra en las habitaciones del hotel, convirtiéndolas así en un lugar único para los huéspedes.

Entre los creadores que se han sumado al proyecto se encuentran artistas nacionales como Marcos Torres, Pau Sanz i Vila y Thani Mara, e internacionales como Yoko Honda y Marylou Faure, seleccionados en función de la calidad de sus trabajos gracias al minucioso trabajo de un equipo curatorial. De esta forma, PARADISO IBIZA ART HOTEL se convertirá en un referente de la escena artística de la isla.

Zero Suite Residencies.

En esta línea de fomento de la creación joven y de vanguardia Art Paradiso pondrá en marcha Zero Suite Residencies un programa de residencias artísticas breves que traerá a la isla a destacados creadores internacionales.

Esta propuesta tendrá lugar durante un fin de semana al mes en la Zero Suite, la habitación más especial del hotel.

Ubicada en el propio lobby, se trata de un cubo transparente en el que se ofrecerán estancias gratuitas a todo aquel quien no le importe ser visto desde todos los ángulos. Los artistas invitados a estas microrresidencias habitarán estas paredes de cristal y realizarán sus intervenciones en la Zero Suite, al tiempo que se dejan empapar en su trabajo por la experiencia de PARADISO IBIZA ART HOTEL y el ambiente de la isla.

Algunos de los artistas participantes en las distintas propuestas del programa Art Paradiso serán invitados también a hacer realizar Take Overs de las redes sociales del hotel. El arte digital, la interacción y el dinamismo serán algunas de las señas de identidad imprescindibles del proyecto.

Además, durante toda la temporada se celebrarán Arty Parties donde el arte, la música y la moda encontrarán su lugar en común.

Art Gallery Uno de los puntos fuertes de la programación será Art Gallery, una galería de arte ubicada en las dependencias del hotel programará, durante los meses de temporada alta, tres exposiciones relacionadas con el concepto del hotel.

Cada muestra contará con actividades paralelas protagonizadas por los artistas.

La galería será accesible tanto desde dentro del hotel como desde el exterior, abriéndose de esta forma no sólo a los huéspedes sino al público general e integrándose plenamente en la escena artística de la isla.

Ibiza a través del arte.

Este nuevo establecimiento hotelero se enmarca en una apuesta por transformar y fortalecer la oferta turística de la isla, ofreciendo para ello exposiciones y actividades en línea con las últimas corrientes artísticas.

Todo el programa de Art Paradiso está abierto no solo a los huéspedes del hotel sino también al resto de población y visitantes de la isla. Así, Art Paradiso pretende activar el tejido cultural de Ibiza y que éste siga creciendo en calidad, riqueza y contemporaneidad ofreciendo una propuesta turística diferente.

Guests will be enveloped by art in a unique atmosphere where the works of contemporary artists will decorate each of the Art Rooms. They will also have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of avant-garde trends thanks to the Art Library, specialised in contemporary art, which will be permanently available for guests to peruse.

Art Rooms As part of the hotel’s artistic program, collaboration will be established with several contemporary artists and creators who will be able to exhibit their work in the hotel rooms, converting them into a unique place for guests.

Among the creators who have joined this project are national artists such as Marcos Torres, Pau Sanz i Vila and Thani Mara and international artists including Yoko Honda and Marylou Faure, selected based on the quality of

This proposal will take place once a month at the weekend in the Zero Suite, the hotel’s most unique room. Located in the hotel’s lobby itself, it is a transparent cube, which will offer free stays to anyone who does not mind being seen from all angles. The artists invited to these micro-residences will inhabit these glass walls and perform their art interventions in the Zero Suite, while immersing themselves in their work, the experience in PARADISO IBIZA ART HOTEL and the island’s atmosphere.

Some of the participating artists in the different Art Paradiso programmes will be invited to hold ‘Take Overs’ on the hotel’s social networks. Digital art, Interaction and dynamism will be some of the hallmarks of the project.

In addition, Arty Parties will be held throughout the season where art, music and fashion will find common ground.

Art Gallery One of the programme’s strong points will be its Art Gallery, located on the hotel premises, which will organise, during the peak seasons, three exhibitions related to the hotel’s concept. Each exhibition will have parallel activities led by the artists.

The gallery will be accessible from both inside and outside the hotel, this way opening it not only to the guests but to the general public and integrating fully into the island’s artistic scene.

Ibiza through art This new hotel establishment is part of a commitment to transform and strengthen the tourist offer on the island, offering exhibitions and activities in line with the latest artistic trends.

The entire Art Paradiso program is open not only to hotel guests but also to island residents and visitors. Thus, Art Paradiso aims to activate the cultural fabric of Ibiza, enabling it to grow in quality, wealth and contemporaneity, while offering a different tourist proposal.

El diseño y la producción de dichos collares ha sido posible por la empresa MAEKAVERA, y la colaboración de UNICEF que se encargará de destinar el 100 % de los beneficios a ayudas para los países más necesitados.

La intención de CONCEPT HOTEL GROUP no es sólo mover esta iniciativa en sus hoteles, sino que también quiere proponerlo a otros hoteleros y empresarios de la isla para ponerlo en marcha en sus negocios y conseguir así que las aportaciones de la isla sean las máximas posibles a través de IBIZA HELPS THE WORLD.
