Coconut water for a hot day
Why we started, how we developed and what we can offer ….
Coconut water is naturally isotonic, helps remove toxins and has anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-microbial properties to help cure diseases. It also helps in flushing kidney stones and in reducing risk of cancer. Try our Blue Monkey and Zico brands
The reasons why we started the business in the late 70’s were to allow seniors and students to buy only what they needed, to save lots of money and to make a positive impact on the environment by saving on the amount of packaging going to the landfill. We found over time that we were able to do those things plus, by finetuning our store and our supplier list we were able to provide very fresh and high quality items. Our bins are personally designed by me and are small and air tight,. The scoops are on a holder inside the bins to alleviate any holes in the bin lids. Our storage is cold and we do not warehouse as we buy directly from over 210 manufacturers and importers. We know of no other bulk stores that have the same commitment to freshness. Many of the local chefs shop at our stores for that very reason. We love to find items that are hard to find. We began with just over 100 products and now have over 5,000. Many of those were brought in by customer request. We have the greatest customers with many telling us that they were in our store in our first week of business over a ¼ of a century ago. We are now serving a 3rd generation and those young people are here for the same reasons their parents came: to buy only what they need, save lots of money over packaged products, buy fresh, buy the highest grade possible, lesson the impact on landfills by minimizing waste (our bags are recyclable, twist ties and containers reusable) We also have the best staff who care for our customers and will show the old fashioned service that has been lost in many stores.

Health benefits of Sprouted Flax It is well known that flaxseed is an outstanding nutritional food source. However, whole flaxseeds are difficult to digest and its nutrients are poorly absorbed. Flaxseed has natural enzyme inhibitors (phytic acid) to prevent digestion. Grinding flaxseed does not necessarily decrease the natural enzyme inhibitors. Only sprouting can decrease the natural inhibitors that cause flaxseed's poor absorption. Sprouted flax has many advantages such as: * Increased enzymes, amino acids, and vitamins allowing for better absorption * A rich source of lignans – which are considered to help in preventing cancers of the breast, endometrium and prostate. * Contains both soluble and insoluble fiber that can help lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar levels, aid in digestion by reducing the time that waste remains in the body and preventing constipation. * Contains both an essential fatty acid and an omega-3 fatty acid, thereby helping lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. * Does not require refrigeration and you can use it in baking. We recommend that you add 1 tablespoon per day to your cereal. Also sprinkle on your salad. It has a nutty pleasant flavour.
What is Buckwheat Kasha? Energizing and nutritious, it is not a grain but a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb and sorrel making it a suitable substitute for people who are sensitive to grains that contain protein glutens. It can be served as an alternative to rice or made into porridge. Kasha is closer to being a complete protein than other plant sources (including soybeans) because it contains all eight essential amino acids in good proportion. It is full of B vitamins and is rich in phosphorous, potassium, iron and calcium. One cup of buckwheat kasha kernels contains more than 20% of the recommended daily intake of fibre.

HONEY CATEGORIES—KNOW YOUR HONEY Comb Honey (honeycomb)
Our customers always ask “where does your honey come from?” We like to answer, “bees”, but apparently they want a more spec ific answer. OtonaBEE Apiary is situated in Indian River, east of Peterborough on a dairy farm. They supply us with clover and buckwheat honey. Astrid Manske and Dave Moffat run this family business along with their three children. Their daughter Ryssa (17) sells the honey at Peterborough Farmer’s Market. Keiton (15) who has a passion for business from the age of 7 owns 18 hives. He also runs the sale of honeycombs. Skye (14) has just started making honey sticks. Honey in a straw can be portable in your lunchbox. Their honeybees like to travel. 420 hives were sent to New Brunswick to pollinate the blueberry crop. They spent three weeks pollinating before the hives were transported home on a transport truck.
Direct from the hive honey-filled beeswax comb as stored naturally by the bees. It is high in pollen which means, our customers tell us, a spoonful a day will keep allergies away.
Liquid Honey (extracted) Prepared by cutting off the wax capping and whirling the comb in a honey extractor, where centrifugal force moves the honey out of the cells. Our honey is local and hence contains the local pollens essential to be an immune system booster. Our honey is not pasteurized.
Creamed Honey (granulated) Made by blending one part finely granulated honey with nine parts liquid honey. The mixture is stored at about 57 degrees until it becomes firm. Our creamed honey is not pasteurized. Creamed honey can be spread thick on toast, yummm! Buckwheat Often known as “black” honey because it looks black unless the light shines through it, it is coppery in colour. It has a pleasant hay-like, earthy smell, and an unforgettable malty, rich, molasses flavour and not too sweet. It is good for use in pancakes or honey cake where you want the honey taste to come up through the other ingredients. According to a study that tested a range of honeys for antioxidant properties, reported in the Journal of Wound Care in 2008, buckwheat honey was up to 30 times as effective as an antioxidant (which promotes wound healing) than the least-effective honey used in the study. Manuka Primarily produced in New Zealand, this honey is used as a natural product both internally and topically on the skin. The bees gather nectar from the flowers of the Manuka bush, which is indigenous only to New Zealand. The honey making process is enriched by the pollution free environment of New Zealand.
