Wow, 10 years as a church! It seems there is more to celebrate than ever before. Not only do we get to look back, remembering all that God has accomplished in and through Rock City Church in the past year, but we also get to reflect on His goodness throughout the past decade. When we launched this church in a movie theater on April 3, 2011, we had no idea what that first year might look like—let alone 10 years! But we knew that we serve a BIG GOD who can do more than we could ever ask or imagine. And that’s exactly what He’s done. We never could have imagined this! The past year—our tenth year—has not been without its challenges. We continue to operate in a world wrestling with a global pandemic, as well as political and social unrest. And yet, despite these challenges, our church has remained strong. Rock City Church is thriving. And most importantly, each and every week, the message of Jesus is bringing hope, healing and peace to thousands of people in their most desperate time of need. We have chosen, in each of the past 10 years, to take time to put an annual report together for several reasons. First, we believe it is important for each person who gives to Rock City Church to see the result of their generosity and to have visibility as to how the gifts they have given are being used to make a real and lasting kingdom difference. Second, every page of these reports is a narrative of God’s faithfulness. These pages tell the story of the favor of God on our church, and we tell our story because we are grateful. Third, these annual reports symbolize the end of one season and the beginning of the next. What kind of impact will Rock City Church make in the next 10 years? Just as we prayerfully trusted God back in that movie theater on our very first day, we continue to lead with open hands, knowing that He will powerfully do so much more than we can even dream. As we step into this new decade of ministry together, one thing is certain—we are honored and grateful to be doing this kingdom-building work with you. Whether you’ve been a part of Rock City Church for 10 weeks or 10 years, you play a role in the story woven throughout these pages. And you are invited to stand in awe of God alongside us, celebrating His goodness, His faithfulness, His protection and His provision. Together, let’s keep on ... Making Heaven Full!

In 2019, I went through a divorce after being married 24 years. Over the next couple of years, I found myself feeling very lost. Something was just off. One of my best friends mentioned going to church, but I wasn’t sure. I was worried that I would be judged. My friend said that Rock City is not like that and invited me to check it out online. She said that the church had just completed a series called, “It’s Not That Complicated,” and thought I would enjoy it. I started watching the series. In fact, I binge-watched the entire series that day! Pastor Chad had an amazing message that spoke to me, and I understood everything he was saying. It was as if he was speaking directly to me. I was going to skip the message on marriage, because I thought, “How would that help me? I just ended mine.” But he kept saying you need to watch all of them no matter what season you are in. To be honest, that one was my favorite! I watched online for another week or two, and decided I needed to go in person. I went and met a greeter who made me feel at home while waiting for my friend. Being in the room and experiencing worship in person was amazing! I decided right there and then that I was home. I started Growth Track shortly after and decided to get plugged in. I jumped into volunteering, and now I get to help others get connected! I have joined a small group. I have gone through Financial Peace University and am working on becoming debt free and have started tithing. I am currently going through Freedom and am becoming freer each day! Besides this, I have also participated in Serve Day and a few other serve events. I thank Rock City Church, Pastors Chad and Katie, and everyone else for introducing me to Jesus. I have a real relationship with Him today, and He has changed my life.

Growing up in the local church and now being part of Rock City for the past three years, I have always heard the importance of community, plugging yourself into a church and joining a small group. This year, I learned how important it really is. In April 2020, my dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The ups and downs of going through his cancer with him were challenging. But God continued to show me through my family and friends how good He is. While my dad was fighting for his life, I joined a men’s Freedom small group with my guys from the Short North. We quickly grew close and watched each other grow in our relationships with Jesus, further developing our friendships and creating a bond that was incredibly strong. With a couple weeks left in the group, I received a call letting me know that my dad’s time left on this earth was almost up. I left Columbus to spend the last month of my father’s life with him. During what was undoubtedly the most difficult and saddening time of my life, I have never felt so loved and uplifted by my brothers from my small group and my Short North family. The texts, calls and prayers lifting me up, encouraging me and loving me helped me through that challenging month. It’s hard to put into words, but the peace and comfort that I experienced as my dad went home to Jesus can only be found through Jesus and His Church. God uses His people for our good and His glory, and I’m proud to say I’ve experienced this firsthand. Thank you, Jesus, and thank you Rock City for being His vessel.

GROWING UP AT ROCK CITY I was 24 weeks pregnant with our first child when we first attended Rock City on April 3, 2011—Launch Day! At the time, C.J. and I had been attending a few different churches in the area, having a hard time finding one that felt right. The Rock City mailer we received that spring was a welcome surprise, and we couldn’t wait to check it out. We hadn’t yet landed on a name for our daughter, and we had tossed around “Macey” as a possibility. When Pastor Chad introduced himself at that very first church service, he told us about his wife Katie and two girls, Morgan and Macy. We knew the name Macey was sounding better and better, and it also felt like an immediate connection to a church we had just walked into. Rock City gave us a brand new feeling about church. We loved the worship experience, found the messages to be captivating and incredibly applicable, and felt confident it would be a great place to raise a family. Macey was born on July 20, 2011, and dedicated a few months later. She has attended Rock City Kids at the Lennox, the Fawcett Center, Upper Arlington High School, Short North and the campus we now call home, Hilliard. Rock City hasn’t just made an impact on C.J. and I; it’s making an eternal impact on Macey and her three younger siblings, Crosby, Deacon and Nellie. We feel incredibly blessed to have found Rock City at the perfect time. It has offered our family a secure foundation on which to build our individual faiths, while simultaneously growing together as a family. We look forward to when our children can take advantage of the amazing Rock City Youth program in just a few short years! Rock City is a special place, one that can feel like home to someone from any walk of life, at any stage of life and at any point in their faith journey. We are immeasurably thankful for Chad and Katie and the entire Rock City staff for creating such a place that has blessed, for the past ten years and will continue to bless, Macey and our entire family.

“All the miracles I’ve seen, too good to not believe” are lyrics from one of my favorite worship songs at Rock City. It tells the story of what has happened in my life, and how I believed in Jesus Christ. Last year, my dad contracted COVID and that led to pneumonia, which triggered something in his immune system to attack his nerve cells. The neurologist declared that my dad had Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition that left him fully paralyzed from the head down. Our whole family’s life got turned upside down. All we could do was pray. He was in the ICU for several weeks, and during that time, I surrendered all to God and put my faith and trust in Him, praying relentlessly. We cried on our knees and prayed multiple times a day until one day he was cleared by the neurologist to go home. I saw firsthand that God is a miracle worker, and I began wanting to know more about my God who made this happen. After walking through this experience with my dad, I made the decision to make God a priority in my life and to know Him more. I started attending Rock City, and my relationship with God really took off. I suddenly had a new life purpose to tell others of how amazing God’s love is and help make heaven full. Today, I am a Rock City Youth Leader and get to help high schoolers learn how to build their relationship with God. These kids are amazing and such an inspiration to me. They encourage me to live out my faith and be a good example for them. My whole spiritual journey all started with a healing miracle and “after everything I have seen, God is just too good to not believe!”

Before I came to Rock City, four years ago, my husband and I were on the brink of divorce. We were struggling and dealing with past issues that were hurting us daily. We had already decided that divorce was the only option. Since we had only been in the U.S. for a few months, we had no support system. I didn’t know the language, and I felt so alone and broken. A friend told me about a bilingual small group at Rock City where the Word of God was changing his life. As a last attempt, we decided to go. When we got plugged into that group, we immediately felt at home. Recently, we both went through the Freedom program in Spanish where Jesus set us free from our past and bondage. We started serving together at Rock City, and shortly after, my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Jesus surrounded us with mentors and people who prayed over our marriage and over his cancer. Through this church community, we experienced the restorative and healing power of Jesus. He not only restored our marriage but also healed my husband. He is now cancer free! He took our brokenness and made us new again. We are now anchored to God’s promise in Isaiah 41:10: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.” I thank Rock City for being a place where we get to experience the presence of Jesus and where our lives are being transformed. We continue to serve through the “Rock City en Español” group at Rock City Polaris. Praise the Lord!

In 2011, we received a Rock City mailer that arrived at our downtown condo. It asked something like, “Are you spiritually restless?” The answer was, “Yes, absolutely!” We were recovering from fresh wounds in our marriage and struggling to separate ourselves from a lifestyle that had become toxic. Our faith was not active, and we were searching. But God was at work. We felt a pull towards checking out this new church at the Lennox movie theater. From that first Sunday, we knew Rock City was home. We didn’t have to wonder for very long where we could serve—we owned a truck and lived downtown. So, when we learned this mobile church needed help pulling trailers and tearing down, we knew we had what it took to make a difference. Fast forward several years, we moved from downtown to Delaware, and God blessed us with two children. When Rock City Westerville opened in 2017, we knew that’s where God wanted us to be. Our children’s excitement for church came as soon as we saw the parking team. A few years later, we were eager to plug into Rock City Polaris when it launched and began serving, as a family, on the Polaris Beyond Our Walls team. At both Westerville and Polaris, Pastor Inde’s excitement for Jesus impacted our children in a real way. In February 2021, our son accepted Jesus and was baptized by Inde at Rock City Polaris. This church has had an eternal impact on our family, and we are so grateful for that. Ten years, two kids and three moves later, God has never stopped pursuing us.

Television Impact

In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Rock City began broadcasting worship experiences on television, allowing individuals and families across Columbus to continue “attending” church even when stay-at-home orders were in place. Because of the life-changing impact this type of access had on many in and beyond our city, we not only continued television programming once restrictions were lifted, but we also expanded our reach to Dayton, Ohio. We are blessed to hear from television viewers each week. This year, 280 viewers let us know that they made a decision for Christ through watching our broadcast.

Our introduction to Rock City Church occurred in August 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic. We weren’t Christians, and we grew up without ever going to church. Our only reference to Christianity was through culture and society. We believed ourselves to be spiritual, but we did not know Jesus Christ. We’d been searching for purpose and understanding for decades, and we looked for it everywhere except for church. One Sunday morning, we sat down with our coffee to watch the news like we usually did on the weekends. Only this time, when we turned on the tv, Pastor Chad was there teaching about the Sermon on the Mount. Something compelled us to leave the channel there. The way the Lord used Pastor Chad to articulate the teachings of Jesus was eye-opening. He spoke about, “blessed are the empathetic.” The message was about how to be more like Jesus, to live like Him and to love like Him. And Pastor Chad spoke the scripture, Philippians 4:6-7, which says, “Worry about nothing, instead pray about everything. Thank Him for what He’s done and ask Him for what you need. Then you will experience God’s peace.” At this time in our lives, that sounded pretty good. We were tired of worrying. We were tired of turmoil and anxiety. We longed for peace. We were longing for Jesus and didn’t even know it. A few weeks later, from our couch, we said the salvation prayer with Pastor Chad as he said it on tv. The difference it made was instant. Accepting Jesus into our lives made Satan release the hold he had on our family. It saved our marriage and our souls. It brought our family back to life. We quickly decided to go all in. We completed Growth Track and started volunteering. We started leading a greeting team and are currently in the Freedom small group. We’ve brought not only our daughter to Rock City, but our parents, grandparents and countless friends. In February, we were baptized, and in June our daughter chose to be baptized as well. All of this happened because we missed the morning news one random Sunday. But Jesus was always with us. We were blind, but now we see. We were deaf, but now we hear. We were crippled by Satan, but now we will walk with Jesus in heaven. And we are saying “Yes” to making heaven full!

Prison Locations THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Despite many prison facilities keeping their doors closed to visitors throughout much of 2020 and early 2021, Rock City’s outreach to prisoners and prison staff continues to grow. Slowly but surely, the prisons are opening back up to allow us to hold in-person worship experiences and offer small groups, prayer and other spiritual resources to inmates.

BYRON Growing up, I never knew my dad. My mother raised me for the first 13 months of my life and then decided that she didn’t want me anymore. My grandma stepped in, so I wouldn’t have to go into the foster system. When she got me, the doctors diagnosed me with “failure to thrive,” due to lack of engagement when I was little. My mother’s abandonment, along with this diagnosis, resulted in all kinds of problems with anger and bitterness. Frustrated and hopeless, my grandma did everything she could to get me the help I needed, investing in countless hours of counseling and therapy. Nothing worked. Finally, feeling like she had gotten to the end of the line, she picked up a phone book and called a local youth pastor in town. My first meeting with him at a local Burger King changed my life forever. Over a burger and fries, I was given a clear presentation of the Gospel. He told me about a God who loved me and of my need for the Savior. I cried out to God in that Burger King parking lot and asked Him to save me. From that day on, I knew something was different in my heart, even though my surroundings didn’t get easier. As I look back at my childhood, I can see that God’s hand and call never left. Even though things got harder, God kept leading me back to Him. Eventually, at the age of 16, I was given up by my grandmother and placed into foster care. It felt like my world was ending, but it was in this time that God blessed me with the sweetest family, The Geralds, as my foster parents. It was my first time in a family with a mom, dad, brothers and sisters who were actively involved in my life. Their love helped me make the decision to go to Bible College in Southern California where, after hearing a message preached about the Macedonian call from Paul in Acts, I made the decision that I would serve Jesus with my whole life no matter what. Today, I am proud to say that unwavering decision to serve Jesus has led me to be a part of Rock City’s Residency Program, where I am learning what it looks like to be in full-time ministry. Together, with three other residents, I am growing as a leader, Christ-follower, husband and father. Having the opportunity to love and invest in others—just like others invested in me—is a dream come true. I truly believe for my life, my wife, my three children and this amazing church, the best is yet to come.

Global Outreach Rock City’s global focus is targeted on reaching people who have neither heard nor had access to the Gospel message. We work to share Jesus with those who don’t know Him by translating the Bible into languages that have not yet been translated. We are also planting and funding pastors and churches in areas where no Christian church exists (the 10/40 window).

Rock City has funded brand-new translations of the Gospel into two languages, giving hundreds of thousands of people access to the hope of Jesus for the first time in history. In these same regions, through our partnership with RUN Ministries, we have established networks where no Christian church previously existed. We celebrate the miraculous work that is occurring in these two regions because of the generosity of the people of Rock City Church. * For the safety of the pastors and new believers in these regions, we are unable to share their exact locations.

AFGHANISTAN RESCUE & RELIEF Shortly after the Taliban forcibly took control of Afghanistan, our partners made us aware of local efforts to provide safety for Christians under attack. We challenged our church to take action and respond quickly to this urgent need. In 24 hours, we raised $702,774 to fund evacuations and to provide support for the men, women and children who are choosing to stay, risking their lives to follow Jesus in a nation now dominated by terrorism.

COVID RELIEF IN INDIA Because of our existing strong partnership with Alpha Ministries in India and the dozens of pastors we have on the ground there, we were able to respond quickly and provide food relief kits to those in India most affected by the economic and physical strain of this year.

Emily The Lord used the pandemic to position me to be able to participate in the Learning Extension Centers as a Site Leader. Prior to the COVID outbreak, I was on the mission field partnering with local churches and long-term missionaries to bring the Gospel to those who don’t know Jesus. Ultimately, the decision was made to send my team home in March 2020. Suddenly, I was back in Ohio after three years away. Shortly after, I received a forwarded email from the Columbus Dream Center. In response to school closures, the Dream Center quickly established 15+ sites all around the city to give Columbus City School students access to meals, homework help, and the love and truth of Jesus. This email inspired me to partner with the steadfast and faith-filled organization to serve the Lord and my community by signing on to be a Site Leader. Over my year as an LEC Site Leader, the Lord strengthened my dependency on Him. I studied finance in school, and though I’ve always loved children, prior to this experience, I would not have said that leading or teaching kids was one of my skillsets. In order to serve my students with excellence, I relied on the Lord daily. The Dream Center equipped me to depend on the Holy Spirit moment by moment and to view all circumstances with a kingdom mindset. This experience paved the way for me to walk into the authority and leadership that the Lord set before me. The Lord has shown me that my mission field is wherever my feet are. Praise the Lord that place is Columbus, Ohio, where His people are partnering with Him to make heaven full!
