The Sunshine Camp program is hosted by the Rochester Rotary Club and provides two one-week camping sessions to families free of charge. Our campers have disabilities including Asthma, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy and many others. We provide the counseling staff, nursing staff, program staff and management staff who oversee the program. For so many of our campers, these experiences are ones they treasure year round until they can get back to Sunshine Camp with their friends. The Sunshine Campus is proud of our partners and the amazing programs they run as well as being a state of the art facility, Where Kids Have No Barriers To Fun.

Thank you Sunshine Campus Partners!

Rotary connects the world. Dear Friends, Providing a fully accessible camping experience for children and adults with disabilities — free of charge. Mentoring students at a school in the inner city. Providing college scholarships for students in need. These are a few of the major initiatives in which Rochester Rotary is actively involved. And we take on these efforts without the benefit of government funding. We rely heavily on donations from the community and from Rochester Rotary club members to make this work possible. In 2019, generous community support enabled the creation of new projects or the continuation of others, including: • More than 2,500 children and young adults with disabilities attended Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus, a summer camp in Rush, N.Y. where kids have no barriers to fun and parents get a much-needed respite. • The construction and dedication of Shirley’s Playland, a fully accessible playground at the Sunshine Camp. • Our 25th year of mentoring and providing college scholarships to children at Roberto Clemente School No. 8 in the city of Rochester. • The first annual Sunshine Camp Trail Mix 5K, which brought out 240 runners, walkers and rollers to support the camp – many of whom had never before seen the tremendous impact of this 157-acre camp. Rotary International’s 2019-2020 theme is “Rotary Connects the World.” Rochester Rotary strives to exemplify this theme locally. With your support, we can continue to make lasting connections for campers, their parents and families, and young people in greater Rochester. You have many choices to direct your charitable giving. We hope you will consider the long-lasting impact you can make with a gift to Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts, Inc. Please help us continue connecting to the many lives we touch by making a financial donation or a planned gift today. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely yours, Kathleen Pringle President Rochester Rotary Charitable Trusts, Inc.

Josh has so much fun and we see a new side of Josh since camp. He is being very independent and much more outgoing. It’s hard for a mother to step back and let their kids have that distance and I think it’s especially hard for mothers of special needs kiddos to step back and allow that freedom. Your camp and your amazing, loving staff made it possible for me to take that step back and have peace of mind and it allowed Josh some much overdue time to unfurl his wings. That is priceless. Thank you so much from all of us. Love and thanks, Sheila Phillips

Shirley’s Playland dedication and groundbreaking On July 17th Rochester Rotary held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially dedicate the fully accessible playground, Shirley’s Playland. Crews broke ground in April of this year. Shirley’s Playland is an accessible playground featuring an array of fun activities for campers, such as a slide and glider, a spinner, gravity cube, climbers, chin-up bars, ball toss, towers, a sign language panel and a sight and sound panel. The playground is named for Shirley Isaac, past Rochester Rotary President Jim Isaac’s wife, who passed away in 2016.

10th Annual Sunshine Kids Gala Rotarians and Rochester Auto Dealers Association (RADA) members rolled the dice at this year’s Sunshine Kids Gala. Guests enjoyed a terrific dinner program, including a live and silent auction as well as a story from a Sunshine Camper family. The Gala raised over $100,000 for the Sunshine Campus. This was the 10th year in partnership with RADA, and a portion of the funds raised benefitted three other RADA children’s charities. Join us for this year’s Sunshine Kids Gala on Saturday, February 8. Contact the Rotary Office for ticket information, or if you would like to donate an item into our silent auction.

How Can I Make a Planned Gift to Benefit the Sunshine Campus? Mark Armbruster, Past President of Rochester Rotary Planned giving is a general term that describes any major gift made during lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and estate planning. Planned gifts can serve a number of different goals. Examples include providing lifetime income to the donor, helping manage capital gains and estate taxes, leveraging the donor’s estate, and fulfilling charitable goals. There are three main categories of planned gifts: outright giving using appreciated securities, gifts that provide income to the donor, and gifts payable upon the donor’s death. Outright gifts usually involve appreciated assets, such as stocks, real estate, art, or other assets that would incur capital gains tax if sold. Donors usually receive a charitable deduction for the full value of the gift, and can also avoid paying tax on the capital gain. Outright gifting strategies can also help reduce the value of taxable estates. Planned giving strategies that pay lifetime income to the donor include charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Both involve an upfront donation in exchange for income over time. There are also other strategies that provide lifetime income or other financial benefits to the donor. Gifts payable upon death could include a charitable bequest, the purchase of a life insurance policy that pays to a charitable beneficiary, or naming a charity as the beneficiary of a retirement account. All of these strategies have tax benefits and implications. It is best to discuss them with your tax advisor before proceeding. If you think planned giving may be right for you and your family, we would be happy to discuss your goals and how they could be met with various planned giving strategies.
