Degrees of emotions The making of a flying stone stair.

It has been always the fantasy to build light, harmonic structures leading us higher and higher in style. https://www.storehouse.co/stories/n0MYFxJ739bS?s=e

And what else than a picture of Jacob's Ladder from William Blake to illustrate this.

The brief from our client was simple, make a stone staircase self supported coming back on itself, to reach the next floor !

For this project, we really wanted to out do our previous challenges in stone staircases. But we would need to work even more closely with our colleagues at Webb and Yates engineers. Most of the stone staircases you see have a supporting wall taking the torsional moment. It is easy to build and fast.

This time we will need to use steel strands, fed through the stone steps and tightly tensioned. Could stone take these tensions ? How could we build it ? Can a 320 ยบ staircase be built ?

Following our traditional process of development, we realised 3/4 mock up, and checked all the different stages of the fitting off site. It worked. Load testing went well too.

Testing bench and mock up.

The Workshop. As always, all manufacturing is done by hand in our workshop using handheld electric tools and human knowledge.

Patiently, all lines are drawn on the big blocks and material carefully removed. Plastic templates are used to draw the shapes of the steps on the stone.

On site. Once all stones are cut, they are shipped to site ready to be lifted in place.

The site is luckily very spacious and our gantry fitted well into the central space. The reinforced concrete landings are ready to get our metal plates in place soon.

But first, we need to set up the base plate and the "formwork " or lost work that will be used as the support structure for the steps.

Once all the lost work is done we can start to lay the first stone and feed the metal cables though each stones.

When all steps are neatly laid, the guns for the tensioning are put in place and 15 tons on each strand applied !

We remove a course of the concrete supporting wall to load test the structure and it is a Success !!

Now we can start building the next lost work on to the flight we have just fitted.
