BORACAY, PHILIPPINES

get to The new Thailand before the rest. by dean nelson DEAN NELSON PHOTOS

T

he quest to find the best beach getaway gets harder and harder as yesteryear’s go-to shorelines are developed, losing the untouched ambiance that was their initial draw. So listen: tell only the worthy about the long, laidback stretches of palm-lined, white sand beaches at Boracay in The Philippines. The modest island, a short fifty minute flight from Manila, has the feel Thailand’s popular Raleigh Beach had twenty years ago. Beach culture forms the fabric of island life, with bars, cafes and massage shacks found all along the waterfront. Boracay’s pristine beaches amble for miles along the island’s leeward side. The windward side is popular for surfing, kite boarding and windsurfing, and is where the Aussies and Germans congregate. Walking is for chumps, by the way: tool around on motorized tricycles and motorbikes instead. Boracay’s clear blue seas make for great sailing. Take an excursion, and head out to Crocodile Island for snorkeling among technicolour fish and coral. Bonus: loads of wicked dive sites for all levels. Accommodation ranges from $5 to $500+ per night. Expect everything from a simple dorm room to presidential style villas. Travel Planning boracay.com.ph myboracayguide.com

trending You started Spruce Body Lab in 2005. Since then, you’ve had a large percentage of men using the spa. Are you surprised by the outcome? Or, did you figure it was inevitable? No, not entirely. I knew that men would certainly utilize our massage therapy division and hair reduction service. I am pleasantly surprised by the number of men who come in regularly for skin care (facials, body scrubs, professional peels). To me it makes sense, and I suppose it was inevitable. Men desire a youthful healthy glow for both their professional and personal lives... putting their best face forward. Guys have rapidly changed their opinions on going to a spa. What changes have you noticed since you first opened Spruce? And, do geographic and demographic factors come into it? The biggest change I have noticed is more men coming to Spruce without their girlfriends. I suppose once they get a sense of a gender neutral spa, they begin to feel at ease and the emasculating spa stereotype melts away. Geography certainly factors in, as do demographics. Generally men living in Yaletown and downtown Vancouver have a deeper sense of self-aesthetic and style. It is important they look good and feel good. Spruce seems to attract men ages 20-65 who are mainly professionals. The workplace has become more competitive and it is more important than ever that mature men are managing stress and arriving to work looking healthy and well rested. Spruce definitely helps with this.

What are the most popular treatments that guys are opting for?

Inevitable Ryan Seitz, owner of Spruce Body Lab, talks men in spas

01.winter feb/ mar 2013

The most popular results-driven treatments for the body are massage therapy, of course, and hair reduction with either wax or IPL (intense pulsed light). For the face, botox and filler are king. A close second would be a facial, power-packed with active ingredients that leave you with a healthy glow and youthful appearance and refreshed and relaxed. What are the upcoming spa trends for men? Male botox and filler clients have risen dramatically over the past 18 months. Both give a dramatic, yet subtle result that lasts. They have a remarkable ability to refresh and restore. On the trending-now horizon, I see a move away from spa treatments that have a theme, or are enveloped in luxury and pampering. Results-driven treatments will continue to grow. Also, skin care products that blend natural ingredients with technology, and have a strong research and development division, will also increase in popularity with men.

The Pop-up shop is quickly becoming a popular venture for independent labels looking to break into the retail market. A pop-up is essentially a store that opens up for a short time to build an audience and capture the attention of the media and potential buyers. Most of the fashion capitals in the world, and I’ll include Vancouver in the mix, have a high operational cost based on leasing prices. It’s difficult as an emerging label to have the funds to lease a proper space right off the bat. Cotte D’Armes is the new kid on the block in the world of denim and in a short time it has garnered a load of media attention. The NY-based luxury line is rooted in military cuts and infused with a biker’s edge. For their SS12 collection they used detailing with leather, treatments like bleaching and elements of hardware for a “Navy Seal gone Rogue aesthetic. I sat down with Clarence Ruth, the creative director, to learn more about why they placed a pop-up in Vancouver.

The first and most obvious question was location. Finding a temporary space is not an easy feat in a city like Vancouver, so galleries and studios were rung up. Taking a leap of faith, a date for the pop-up shop was set before a space was secured. The universe delivered: Chinatown Experiment Space (434 Columbia St). For the next two months, you can check out their showroom in downtown Vancouver to learn more about the line. Currently they are exclusively carried at “TODAY, a new boutique in Gastown at 158 Powell St.

ASK A LAWYER PART 1

Q

My partner is planning on moving into the condo I own and I’m concerned about protecting my assets in the event we break up. My mortgage is paid off, I have a collection of valuable autographed footballs, and no debt. When do we become common-law, what does that mean, and how can I best protect my property?

A

The beginning of cohabitation is often one of the most exciting stages of a relationship. Two people are preparing to build a life together and the most appropriate visual is that iconic scene with the green hills from The Sound of Music. However, the end of cohabitation can turn ugly very quickly, especially when disputes about money and property get raised, and that peaceful scene more closely resembles a clip from Apocalypse Now. When two partners decide to live together and there’s a significant economic disparity between them, it is not unusual for one partner to be concerned. As of March 18, 2013, the new Family Law Act comes into force and it will bring sweeping changes to the rules governing separation and divorce between married and unmarried couples. The Family Law Act (FLA) replaces the ancient Family Relations Act, and for the sake of simplicity and answering your question, let’s consider unmarried couples exclusively. The FLA makes common-law spouses subject to the same rules respecting property division as married spouses. Common-law status is achieved, under this legislation, when you and your partner have been living in a marriage-like relationship for two years. The FLA will create a category of excluded property to help protect the assets that people bring into relationships. Certain property that you bring into your relationship, including real estate and other assets like that Tom Brady autographed football, will be protected and not considered to be “family property”. However, your partner will still be entitled to any increase in value of the property from the date of cohabitation to the date of separation. What this means is that if your condo is valued at $400,000 at the date of cohabitation and $600,000 at the date of separation, your soon-to-be ex will be entitled to fifty percent of that gain. Some other examples of excluded property will include inheritance or settlement funds from insurance claims or lawsuits compensating you for injury or loss. However, the FLA also brings an additional level of protection to those couples that want to try to ensure that they have extra security by greatly strengthening the enforceability of cohabitation agreements. A cohabitation agreement is similar to a pre-nuptial agreement, except it is made when people start living together without necessarily contemplating marriage. These agreements will usually withstand a court challenge unless one spouse failed to disclose significant property or debts, or other information relevant to the negotiation of the agreement, or if one spouse took advantage of the other spouse’s vulnerability, including ignorance, need or distress. Full and forthright disclosure is critical when a cohabitation agreement is being drafted. The short answer to your question is that a properly drafted cohabitation agreement will provide you with the most protection possible and protect the assets that you bring into your relationship. A strong cohabitation agreement can potentially protect you from a difficult and costly legal battle and ensure that your Brady balls come with you into your next relationship, even if your current partner does not. LARS KUSHNER Family Law and Civil Litigation lars.kushner@gmail.com

Ball Slam Start with the ball on the ground, bend down to pick it up with your eyes looking straight forward and spine in a neutral position. Keeping your core tight, rapidly drive the ball up overhead and back into the ground, trying to catch it as it bounces so that you can go straight into your next rep. Form tip: make sure your back never rounds and your eyes are looking straight in front of you.

next issue Goblet Squat Holding the ball at the top of your chest, keep your elbows tucked in and proceed to lower yourself into a full squat. Come back up to a standing tall position. Form tip: make sure that your weight is on your heels and your knees are tracking out over your feet - not buckling in.

spring training

Ball Push-up If you’re already confident with regular push-ups try a push-up on the ball; place both hands on the ball, keeping your elbow tucked in tight to your sides, lower yourself down so that your chest touches the ball, and drive yourself up out to a fully extended position. This requires a lot more strength and stability. Form tip: keep you elbows in tight to your sides and your body in a rigid plank position. Weighted Sit Up Place the ball on your chest and perform a sit up where your shoulders touch the ground and come back up to almost vertical. Beginner/Intermediate: Try 2-4 sets of each of these movements, performing 510 reps per exercise. Rest as required between movements but try to work through at a good pace—maintaining solid technique throughout. Ball Run If you are already confident that you can do a few laps of your block without passing out, try running with the ball; guaranteed to make a 400m run that much harder.

Advanced: If you’re confident in your current strength/conditioning levels and have done high intensity training before, try this little workout for size – set a 15minute clock and see how many rounds of the following sequence you can do before the buzzer, keeping your rest to a minimum: 10 Ball Pushups, 15 Ball Slams, 200m Ball Run.

“Vancouver is a city of many seasons and great locations, but that’s not the only reason American productions come to Vancouver. Do Canadians make amazing movies? Absolutely.”

arleo dordar Age Range: 25-30 Height: 6’

On production in Vancouver Vancouver-based actors often provide better value for money. This is due to the fact that our contracts usually include a buyout fee rather than a residual structure that would continue to pay us in the years following a production’s release. Unfortunately, many of our most talented artists inevitably feel the need to move to Los Angeles to compete in a larger market. On acting in Vancouver Although I’m interested in working internationally, Vancouver will always be my home. This is great city not only to work in, but also to live in. One of the greatest things about the industry here is that it is constantly expanding. We now have two fantastic sitcoms here (Mr. Young and Package Deal), both of which are shot in front of a live studio audience. This format has traditionally been the domain of American and British productions. It’s great to see Canada expanding into this area as well as into more animation, commercials, web series and groundbreaking television like SyFy’s Sanctuary, which was shot almost entirely on green screen.
