About Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) In its purest form, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes essentially that community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and rewards of food production. Members of the farm purchase a share in advance—usually in Spring—committing to the farm for the season, which helps to cover the initial annual costs of the farm operation at a time when farmers have very little farming income. In return, members receive boxes of the farm’s produce or other products throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and knowing where their food comes from. Typically, once harvesting begins, members receive a weekly box of food— generally vegetables, but some may include or offer separately fruits, cheeses, eggs, meats, poultry, flowers, or herbs. Pickup sites are often located at a member’s house, local businesses or churches, at a farmers’ market, or at the farm; some farms offer home delivery to some areas. Most farms create a newsletter that accompanies each delivery with notes about farm activities, descriptions of what’s in the box, cooking tips and recipes. Many farms also create opportunities for their members and families to visit the farm and participate in farm events. The usual CSA season in the greater Chicago area runs from June through mid-October, but some CSAs operate nearly year-round. Farms offer a diversity of share
options including extended season shares, multiple share types and sizes, and payment plans to accommodate households on a tight budget. CSA farmers tend to be small scale farms that use farming methods that produce high quality while reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment. Your CSA box will change with the seasons. In late spring and early summer, a vegetable CSA will feature cool-weather crops such as kale, Asian greens, lettuce, asparagus, and radishes. As it warms up, the summer veggies come in, such as tomatoes, beans, bell peppers, zucchini, potatoes, and cucumbers. Cooler fall temperatures bring the roots and winter storage veggies such as onions, butternut squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes, as well as broccoli, greens, and more. Many farms list what they grow on their websites.
Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food
For the Band of Farmers CSA growers and producers, CSA is much more than just a weekly delivery of food; it is a mutually beneficial relationship. They are the growers or producers of all or the vast majority of their box contents. While they might collaborate with other local farmers to add value to their shares by offering occasional specialty items, Band of Farmers members are the primary producers of their CSA members’ food. It means that as a member of a Band of Farmers CSA farm you truly know your farmer. Your dollars are going directly to your farmer for their farm products. Your box is not amassed from throughout the region or country, but rather a delicious box containing the bounty of your farm, picked, washed and prepared by your farmer, for you.
About Band of Farmers Band of Farmers: The Chicagoland CSA Coalition is a coalition of CSA farms serving the greater Chicago area. Begun in 2014 and borrowing heavily from the groundbreaking work of FairShare CSA Coalition in Madison, WI, Band of Farmers joined forces primarily to collaborate on educating consumers about local foods in general and the CSA model in particular.
That creativity translated into the first annual Farmer Talent Show in 2013 with Julia McDonald of Peasants’ Plot (now Julia On The Farm) and Jody Osmund of Cedar Valley Sustainable Farm, at the helm. Together with a dozen or so farms who had met at farmers’ markets or in beginning farmer classes dubbed “Band of Farmers,” they set out with the mission to spread the word about supporting small farms through CSA. This collaboration led to plans for a CSA coalition. Working with FamilyFarmed, they created a CSA Pavilion at the 2014 Good Food Festival held in March at the UIC Forum. The participating farms capped off a long day by performing that night in the second annual Band of Farmers Talent Show at The Hideout in Chicago.
As the local foods movement has gained momentum over the last decade, the number of farms serving the Chicago area has grown, and more of them have chosen to market directly to consumers through the CSA model. That’s all to the good, and there are plenty of potential shareholders for CSAs in the region; Band of Farmers is created to collectively reach out to them.
With the realization that these labor-intensive events were too difficult for even a dedicated troupe of farmers, it was decided to formalize a relationship with Illinois Stewardship Alliance to create a coalition of CSA farms that serve the greater Chicago area. That coalition—which retains the Band of Farmers name—became operational just in time for marketing the 2015 season.
What’s in a name?
Those operating within the CSA model are small-scale farmers and tend to be both creative and collaborative.

Our produce is grown on a beautiful farm that has been in our family since 1873 using non-GMO seeds, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers because we like the fact that our son can eat veggies straight off the vine. We utilize sustainable techniques such as crop rotation and soil enrichment via natural fertilizers (thank you, chickens). We are also proud to be Animal Welfare Approved!

We are focused on growing blooms and foliage, including native perennials and herbs, and using sustainable growing methods. We are a 10-acre, family-run vegetable farm approximately 65 miles Southwest of Chicago. Our guiding principles at Bray Grove Farm are to live and work in ways that allow nature to inform our decisionmaking and to educate others on the benefits of smallscale, equine-based agriculture in the modern world. We utilize organic methods and alternative tillage techniques, which preserve soil fertility through a carefully scheduled rotation of produce and cover crops. Hand labor using simple agricultural tools and a team of gentle and loving draft mules provides all our farm's motive power needs, from the planting through cultivation and harvesting.

Brian and Karen Severson are the fifth generation on their small family farm, where they grow organic and nonGMO grains. Unhappy with the introduction of GMO's, Brian experimented with organic methods, producing their first Certified Organic sweet corn in 2007. They've since added oats, various food corns, wheat, popcorn, peas, soybeans, and buckwheat, often heirloom varieties, and they save their own seeds whenever possible. With the addition of a stone grist mill and other equipment, the Seversons not only grow but also clean and process these grains into various flours, rolled oats, and meals. Their unique Winter CSA provides a sampling of these grain products with plenty of recipes.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a CSA Farm All of the farms in the Band of Farmers follow the basic CSA model, grow a wide variety of sustainably grown or Certified Organic vegetables and/or humanely raised meats. Beyond these similarities, each CSA farm has characteristics which are uniquely their own. Consider which of those is important to you.
Farm Location. CSA farms serving the greater Chicago
area are located throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan. Consider how often you want to be involved in on-farm activities and how far you would be willing to drive.
Farm Size. Some CSA farms have small operations with
fewer than 10 families enrolled while others are large and feed more than 1,000. Within these size categories there are those farms that grow exclusively for their CSA members and other farms that do CSA along with selling at farmers' markets, stores, restaurants, etc.
Price of Share. Don’t select your CSA farm based solely on price; that’s like comparing apples to oranges (or carrots to cucumbers, if you will). Each farm has different season lengths, crops, share sizes, etc. Becoming a CSA member can save you money on high quality, organically grown food, but consider the wider CSA experience of community, connectedness and education rather than just a commodity—priceless!
Length of Season. A typical Midwest CSA produce
ON CN CS NS NW WE FW
farm delivers its CSA shares from June to October, but our members’ seasons for produce range from 12 weeks to 42 weeks—and everything in between. Some farms use season-extending devices such as hoop houses and focus in the cooler months on winter storage crops and farmprocessed products such as canned tomatoes, frozen squash, etc. Farms that offer meat CSAs typically deliver their shares year-round.
11 Pick-Up/Delivery Options. Most CSA farms have pick-
up sites in the greater Chicago area where their shares are dropped off, while some offer home delivery or shipping. Consider how important it is to you to have a pick-up site located near your home, school, or work, or to have products arrive directly to your home. If there’s no pick-up site or delivery option where you live or work, consider starting one!
Delivery Day and Time. The days and times for obtaining your CSA varies. Some CSA members prefer getting their shares at the end of the week or the weekend so they can supplement their share at the farmers' market, others prefer to cook up a storm on all week long! Be sure to note the pickup time range; is it a time frame you can consistently meet? Types of Food. Most CSA farms offer a wide variety of
seasonal produce, while others offer meat, eggs, fruits, or a combination. Some offer specialty items—like flowers, cheese, syrup, etc.—either included in the share or available for purchase as add-ons.
Farming Practices. All the Band of Farmers farms are small-scale and/or family farms; some are Certified Organic, in transition to certification, or have received approval from another agency or organization. There is also a wide spectrum of mechanization levels between farms. View the farms’ profiles on our website to see how each farm engages with their environment. Opportunities for Involvement. Fresh for Life Organics
Richford, WI 715-228-3338 freshforlifeorganics.com
We are a Certified Organic produce farm. We use sustainable practices such as crop rotation, drip irrigation, green manures (cover crops, green mulch, etc.) and no animal by-products in any step of the process. We grow all of our own transplants from seed. We have beneficial habitat for all of our pest control, including milkweed to aid in monarch butterfly recovery, and every seventh row on our field includes flowers to attract bees. In addition to our bi-weekly CSA, we host an informal "picnic in the field" on Thursdays from late May through September, with a seasonal, plant-based menu featuring our farm vegetables.

North Judson, IN 219-730-5017 greenacresindiana.com
We are entering our ninth year of production, and are proud to continue organic crop production and stewardship of our Illinois soils. My family has farmed this ground for decades, allowing us to leverage advice from experienced farmers (parents, friends, neighbors) to produce high quality bounties of vegetables grown with dedication. We recycle old machinery (our potato digger is converted from a horse-drawn implement); while a new machine is often required to do the job, sometimes we can use a torch and welder to create interesting, functional tools. We serve a community of customers through our CSA, farmers’ market, wholesale, and Winter ordering programs, providing Chicagoland with the best our fields can produce.
Green Acres Farm was established by Beth's grandparents in 1933. As Japanese immigrants, they grew Asian specialty vegetables to sell to restaurant and grocery businesses in Chicago. In 1996, following her parents' retirement, Beth and her husband Brent took over ownership and transitioned Green Acres to a direct marketing operation. Expanding on the Asian vegetable niche, they now grow more than 500 varieties of Certified Naturally Grown heirloom vegetables and fruits and strive to provide nutrient dense, great tasting food that is safe to eat and promotes biodiversity. A typical box contains between 8 to 12 items from these bountiful crops.

Our motto is We Grow Healthy! This year we are celebrating our 15th anniversary.
Harrison Market Gardens has been family run for over ten years. We are Certified Naturally Grown, using the same growing protocols as “organic.” In addition to our more traditional CSA we also offer a subscription U-pick plan for those in the Rockford area. Our rich black soil needs little enhancement but maintaining and increasing its fertility has become an ongoing focus. Our farm has never had chemical inputs. We protect our fields with windbreaks and fence rows, and have learned to choose appropriate cover crops so we seldom have bare land. In 2016, our tenth year, we grew for over 100 families, many of them weekly U-pick subscribers.
