Liberated Learning

Vision Our approach to education is based upon • a philosophy which advocates individual empowerment and liberation; • a recognition of the need to provide a ‘futureready’ education; • research into effective learning; • highly successful models of education from around the world; and • our collective experiences of teaching and leading International and London State schools and our academic work in the field of educational research, practice and leadership. We believe that all students, no matter their starting point, gender, ethnicity or circumstance, have a right to an outstanding education built upon solid principles of personalisation, authenticity and equity and upon foundations derived from international research into education systems and into the learning sciences. Through this we strive to develop students who are independent, able to successfully move through the phases of their education, possessing the skills and self-efficacy to navigate this complex world and question their role as a global citizen, in essence Liberated Learners.

Mission Our core mission is to achieve our vision for the education of each and every learner in our care. We are committed to raising the aspirations of Waltham Forest's learners and providing them with the means to develop the skills needed to enter the world of further study and work. To achieve our goals • Infinity School will offer a learning environment designed to maximise positive collaboration between individuals, betweens groups and between members of an ever broader community. • Infinity School will offer a curriculum, developed with University College London, which is authentic and immersive, enabling students to participate in cross-subject enquiries which provide opportunities to engage deeply with the knowledge, attitudes and skills of a wide range of academic disciplines. • Infinity School will create a culture of openness and transparency where parents and families will be encouraged to become actively involved in the development of the school and in the learning experiences of their child. • Infinity School will have high expectations for all the learners in our care.Through challenge and close support all students will come to know, to do and to achieve more than they thought possible. • Infinity School will provide the means for all learners to develop complex ‘soft’ skills such as self-efficacy, collaboration and resilience, so that they can successfully navigating our complex world.

Design Principles We have applied a refined model of “design thinking” to the design of Infinity, articulated as four distinctive Design Principles; 1.Personalisation; 2.Authenticity; 3.Educator as designer; and 4.A common intellectual mission for all.

Liberated Learning Principle 1: Personalisation By being acutely sensitive to individual differences, including prior knowledge, we will promote voice, choice and ownership over all aspects of a learner’s development. The curriculum will be highly attuned to learners’ motivations and the importance of emotions and wellbeing. Personal relationships between educators, learners and the wider community are fundamental to learning. An Infinity education is one which is owned and shaped by learners, not a thing done to them with no consideration of their needs, wants, passions, hopes or dreams.

Authenticity also recognises the need to become exam ready as well as world ready. As such the curriculum will be underpinned by a lattice of subject specific knowledge, concepts and skills to ensure a rigorous academic Core is present throughout all learning experiences. Authenticity also extends to assessment. The model of assessment within Infinity is authentic as it observes, recognises and rewards that which is authentically valuable to educators, learners and to the wider community. This is articulated throughout our Infinity Baccalaureate.

Principle 2: Authenticity To fully enable Personalisation an education must possess Authenticity. The purpose, process and products of learning will be authentic, real and of benefit to an ever wider community, beginning with the individual learner. The curriculum will replicate the real world, its concepts and its problems. Learners will tackle the problems they see in the world and tackle these in meaningful and beneficial ways. Principle 3: Educator as designer Authenticity and true Personalisation are only realised when the professional expertise of educators is fully activated. Off the peg, generic and annually repeated curriculum can not offer true personalisation or authentic experiences. Dynamism requires the freedom and agency of educators. Working within interdisciplinary teams, educators will have the creative freedom to lead the development and delivery of the curriculum. Their own interests and passions will be shared with learners as they take learners on a journey, learning together as equals.

Liberated Learning We at infinity recognise that for this to be realised a high degree of support is required. As such our approach to Continuous Professional Learning, the provision of daily planning and reflection time and significant opportunities to engage with enquiry, research and innovation will provide educators with the capacity to create the curriculum. We will enable all the opportunity to lead learning, ensuring high degrees of accountability, responsibility and creativity through the systems and structures woven through Infinity as a learning organisation. We will achieve this through • An application of Collaborative Leadership • A real-world application of interdisciplinarity • An application of a CPL model which establishes a sustainable culture of research engaged and informed practice • Daily collaborative planning, teaching and reflection opportunities Our Innovative Pedagogical Core:  The key elements of an effective pedagogical core is the relationship between learners, content, educators, and resources. In many cases these areas are taken for granted with little prior consideration of the nature, structure and relationship of each. We at Infinity have studied examples of best practice from around the globe using the evidence base concerning education and the learning sciences to shape these four symbiotic elements of schooling and with that our four Principles of an Infinity education.

Principle 4: A Common Intellectual Mission For the above to be realised, a system of education, and all those within it, must be guided by a Common Intellectual Mission. A culture of affective and effective education must be founded upon a firm foundation of robust philosophical principles, upon evidence derived from the learning sciences, upon recognised systems of global best practice within education and upon a boundless passion for impactful, inclusive learning for all individuals. From such a Common Intellectual Mission can be derived, articulated and lived by all that are part of the community. Learning will be central, encourage engagement, and will be where learners come to understand themselves as active self-regulated learners, individuals and members of a community.  Learning is to be demanding for each learner but without excessive overload, as this is how one can makes progress as an individual. By ensuring that learning is social in nature learners will engage predominantly in collaborative problem design and problem solving. All learners will have opportunities to develop the skills, attributes and capacities to master their own learning, lifelong-lifewide. In short our learners will become ‘future-ready’ and with that liberated learners. Liberated Learning Infinity School will be a non-selective, 11-16 community school, offering all families of Waltham Forest access to an education focused upon ensuring that every learner is prepared for the complex realities of life within the 21st Century. • Our approach to education is based upon research into effective learning, inspired by highly successful models of education from around the world and shaped by our collective experiences of working in International and London State schools.  • Our approach does not segregate children by social class or academic ability and through our carefully created teaching groups, called Infinity Teams, difference becomes a driving force for authentic, personalised and collaborative learning.  • Our approach will enable all learners to master a range of cognitive, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, and with this become independent and liberated learners.

We at Infinity believe that it is the duty of an education to, • enable all learners to know enough about themselves, others and the world to find out more; • enable all learners to build the cognitive and social means to master a lifetime of learning; • enable all learners to develop and practise a range of cognitive, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills which they can develop, hone and synthesise across subject and context specific boundaries throughout their lives; and • enable all learners to question, to be self motivated, self regulated and to be aware of how they, others and the world ‘works’.

Liberated Learning Infinity School will have high expectations for all learners in our care.Through challenge and close support all students will come to know, to do and to achieve more than they thought possible. • Our students will master academic content, produce high quality work and will be provided with opportunities to benefit the wider community through the products of their learning.  • In addition to developing a broad range of skills and capacities which will enable each and every learner to engage with the world positively we expect all to achieve at least 5 A*-C GCSE grades including English and Maths, to obtain the Extended Project Qualification and to maintain a positive Progress measure throughout their time at Infinity.  • Our approach to highly personalised and authentic learning with a relentless focus upon the purpose, process and products of that learning will help all students develop the academic skills and work ethic that prepares them for life beyond school.  • Our holistic and integrated approach to pastoral support, learning, teaching, and assessment, when coupled with our extremely high expectations, will provide the perfect foundation for achievement and success for all.

Infinity School will create a culture of openness and transparency where parents and families will be encouraged to become actively involved in the development of the school and in the learning experiences of their child. • Parents, local experts and the wider community will be invited to attend Celebrations of Learning, to be panel members at Student Led Conferences and to run Exploratory learning sessions.  • This enhanced relationship between school, home and the community is designed to ensure that Infinity School will be a true community school, to be a hub for local families and local enterprise and above all to create ever more meaningful learning experiences for our learners.
