LISTINGS AND ACCESS GUIDE INSIDE

How to use Access Scoƫsh Theatre Welcome to the Access Scottish Theatre guide, which contains useful information about accessible performances and venues across Scotland. We think that it is important that you have all the information you need to make bookings, get to the venue and enjoy yourself when you are there. “The printed access guide is a fantastic thing for someone who doesn’t use the internet but would travel a long way to see good theatre” - Audience member requesting to join mailing list August 2011

How to use the guide The guide is split in to three main sections - at-a-glance; listings of accessible performances; and venues & touring companies. The listings and venue pages are ordered by city. On page 26 you can find out how to use the venue pages. We have tried to include useful information as simply as possible, but we have used some abbreviations.

About Accessible Performances

Audio Described performances support people who are blind or partially sighted to access live performance. An audio describer meets audience members to introduce set and characters by providing verbal description which continues during the performance via a headset. Sometimes there is a Touch Tour of the set and costumes before.

BSL interpreted performances allow people who are Deaf or for whom British Sign Language is their first or preferred language access to live performance. BSL interpreters provide a linguistic and artistic interpretation. The interpreter mostly stands to one side of the stage but sometimes interpreters are involved in the staging or the performance.

Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performances. A captioner carefully prepares and cues text that appears in real time on units placed to the side of the stage, centrally or within the set. Hearing assistance systems tend to be used alongside captioning.

The accessible performances on the at-a-glance pages are colour coded as above.

Laura and Jake just want sex. Late Friday night drunken sex. Nothing more. No strings attached. But getting your leg over is sometimes more difficult than you think. The production contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.

To book please contact individual theatres - see venue pages in guide. For full touring details www.birdsofparadisetheatre.co.uk

Relaxed Performances Lights tend to be kept on at a low level and sudden noises, such as explosions, or flashing lights may be removed from productions. People are free to come and go and this can be helpful if someone cannot manage a full performance. There is also a relaxed attitude towards noise made by audience members and there tends to be more theatre staff on hand to offer support. There are currently no confirmed relaxed performances for January to August 2014. For more information about particular services and approaches in each theatre please contact the them directly. His Majesty's Theatre, Eden Court Theatre, Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Playhouse and the National Theatre of Scotland have all undertaken relaxed performances over the last year.

RELAXED

Relaxed performances are for audience members with sensory or learning impairments or anyone who may benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere.
